Am I Looking Or Lusting?

This article is my response to an email I received. This one article will contain the entire conversation I had with a man who struggles with lust. If you personally struggle with lust, may this article help you overcome your struggle and find freedom in Christ. Amen.

“Hey Pastor Trent!

You have been SO helpful in answering a lot of my hardest questions towards God or my own faith and walk with Him, and I would love for you to give me Biblical but also personal perspective and experience on this one:

Lust. I feel like I’ve been set up to fail.

See, before coming to Christ, I was HEAVILY addicted to pornography, masturbation, fornication, and lusting after women. BUT, on the day I gave my life to our Lord, I COMPLETELY STOPPED masturbating, watching pornography, fornicating (or attempting to). PRAISE GOD! Boom, in a snap, POOF! Gone.

BUT…
The struggle to still look unto women remains. Outside of the most brought-up reason as to why it’s a struggle for me, like “lust and fornication are extremely advertised and encouraged in today’s society” (which is true), there’s an internal battle and question in me:

“How do I know when I’m lusting, or just looking at a woman who I find attractive?”

See, I’ve heard that lusting is when you look at a woman and imagine her sexually in some way in your mind. Others say it’s looking at her body, and so on. So I feel tossed and turned on this subject and it torments me day and night. It’s gotten so bad, that I have to flee visionally or physically away from a woman or a place where women are (which is basically anywhere) just because I fear lusting.

I guess what I’m trying to say is, what is allowed and isn’t? Can I be attracted to a woman and her physique? Her face? I know being attracted to women isn’t the sin. Quite the opposite, I think if I wasn’t attracted to them, THAT would be a problem HAHA! But ugh, I just don’t understand. And as for the title of this very email, it just makes me feel set up.

Sometimes, in frustration and disappointment, I tell Jesus “Lord, why did you have to set the bar even higher…?” Because it’s like, MAN! How can a young man who’s single NOT want to look at pretty girls? I don’t know. It just feels so complicated and impossible this one commandment. Especially, in again, a time where life revolves around it so much for the young man.

I know the beautiful, wholesome, and loving reason as to why Jesus doesn’t want us to lust. Because how can a loving God ever want us to objectify and sexualize another human being? And so, I feel like a jerk. And it’s not necessarily that I want to be like “this is an object of my sexual pleasure, not a woman” I just want to be able to find a woman attractive and not feel like I murdered someone in my heart. Some days, I come home and I just feel so dirty, and like a traitor and it just leaves me burned out and numb.

Any advice, biblical and personal, would be appreciated. God bless you pastor. This email program you have so graciously provided for your brothers and sisters is a blessing to me. Praise God!”
–Kevin

Kevin! Thank you for the email!

First and foremost, I want to thank you for being transparent and vulnerable with me. Transparency allows me to see within, but your vulnerability allows me to come inside and communicate with you about what I see. It takes courage for you to do that and so I thank you for granting me access into this private area of your life. Second, I want to tell you that I completely understand where you’re coming from. Personally. I’m 38 years of age and I’m still single. My sex drive is less than when I was in my 20’s and so it is a little easier for me now than it had been in the past to battle against my sexual desires, but the struggle is still real nonetheless. And third, I want to level the playing field by humbling myself. For this response, I am not writing to you as a pastor to a parishioner, but as a brother to a brother. I am not greater than you in this area of struggle. So, it is my hope that this conversation between us can be helpful and healing for both of us. It is because of your question that I will be able to confess my sin and constant struggle. But through all of this, may GOD help us to grow and walk in righteousness.

Many scholars would agree that a sinful lust can be defined as a desire for something that GOD has forbidden. So, in this sense, it doesn’t even necessarily have to be our physical attraction to women. After all, greed is lust for money and/or power. Eve lusted after the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden. But this is why many people now relate private parts and sexual pleasure with “forbidden fruit.” And because the topic you desire to discuss is lust in relation to women, I’ll keep my response to that specific area of lust.

GOD gave us the hardwired brain which enables us to find women attractive and desirable. This desire is good, right, and in alignment with GOD’s original design. GOD declared it was good for us to be fruitful and multiply (done in the right way, of course, within the confines of marriage). And of course, some brains are cross-wired (homosexuality) due to the fall. So, it’s not a bad thing that we find women attractive. In fact, it’s not even a bad thing that we recognize physical beauty when we look at women. The question we must ask ourselves is “at what point do I cross the line from recognizing and appreciating physical beauty to actively seeking after that which is forbidden or not mine to seek after?”

A perfect example of this, of course, can be seen with David and Bathsheba. Let’s briefly examine this documented event:

(2Samuel 11:1-5)
1 Then it happened in the spring, at the time when kings go out to battle, that David sent Joab and his servants with him and all Israel, and they destroyed the sons of Ammon and besieged Rabbah. But David stayed at Jerusalem. Now when evening came David arose from his bed and walked around on the roof of the king’s house, and from the roof he saw a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful in appearance. So David sent and inquired about the woman. And one said, “Is this not Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?” David sent messengers and took her, and when she came to him, he lay with her; and when she had purified herself from her uncleanness, she returned to her house. The woman conceived; and she sent and told David, and said, ‘I am pregnant.’ ”

I colored some key phrases in red in order to highlight specific talking points. Just in this short passage of a mere five verses, there is a lot to learn! GOD inspired this to be written in the Bible so that we may learn from David’s mistake and refrain from making this same mistake. This is what lust is and this is what lust does to those who pursue lustful thoughts. In those days, kings led their armies into battle; they did not stay at home while their armies went to war. Up to this point in the story, David had always led his armies in battle; however, on that day, David decided to abandon his duty and purpose by staying home. So, already, it is evident that David was not where he was supposed to have been. So when David decided to walk around on his rooftop, taking in the wonderful scenic view, some of his men were on their way to death. It is at this point in the story that David sees Bathsheba bathing. David saw this woman and he was attracted to her. However, it was at that point that he should have recognized that he was lusting after that which was not his to lust after. After all, David already had multiple wives. Did he need one more? No. In fact, David’s multiple wives caused him to be callous to sexual sin. David allowing himself to have multiple wives also caused him much grief throughout his lifetime. And as we later read, David’s sin with Bathsheba led to the death of his baby son and a host of other deadly occurrences such as rape and murder within his own family. In fact, 2Samuel 13 recounts the tragic story of lustful thoughts turning to wicked actions. King David’s son, Amnon, became obsessed with his half-sister, Tamar. Because he did not get rid of his lustful thoughts, they consumed him until he committed the horrific act of raping her. After his lustful appetite was satisfied, he no longer cared what happened to Tamar, and he discarded her like a piece of garbage (13:15). Lust causes a person to care only about satisfying his/her urges; the lust-filled individual cares nothing about the people who will be hurt by his/her actions. A lustful thought must be seen as the enemy it is before it takes over our lives.

When David saw Bathsheba, he lusted after her. He could have merely recognized and appreciated her physical beauty and then turned away in repentance in order to seek GOD’s will in the matter, but he pursued his lustful desires instead. This is the line. Pursuit. And because David pursued his lustful desire, he sent his messengers to inquire about Bathsheba. The messengers came back and informed David that she was Uriah’s wife. This was another checkpoint and another “do not cross” line that GOD set up. After all, it was clearly commanded by GOD in Exodus 20:14 that “You shall not commit adultery” as well as Exodus 20:17 that “you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife. But David again decided to pursue his lust, disregarded the fact that she was another man’s wife, and he had her brought to him. But even after she was brought to him, he had yet another “do not cross” line. Just because she was there in his presence did not mean he had to go through with his plan to fulfill his sinful sexual desire with her. It wasn’t too late. David could have repented right there and sought to come back into alignment with GOD’s will. But David broke through that final barrier and sinned. And so David was where he was never supposed to be, focused on his own desires, disregarded GOD’s “do not cross” lines, and chose not to flee from temptation. There’s two important Scriptures that help us understand this scenario better.

(James 1:13-15)
13 Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am being tempted by God’; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone. 14 But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. 15 Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.”

(1Corinthians 10:12-13)
12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall. 13 No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.”

So, first and foremost, we must ensure that we are not where we should not be. Obviously, this means we should not find ourselves in strip clubs or looking at pornography in private. Some situations will require discernment. For example, if you find yourself in a situation when another man’s wife invites you to have sex with her, it’s obvious we must flee from there just as Joseph had done (Genesis 39:11-12). But, you may find yourself in a situation where you end up alone with a women in her room or your room. At first, any scenario between you and another woman can begin innocent enough, but discernment will be required in order to know when the situation has lost its pure motives. There is always a line we should not cross. The difficulty is in recognizing that line while our fleshly bodies are being persuaded by emotions and sexual desires. Again, these desires are right— they’re not wrong. But these desires need to be fulfilled only with a spouse. But merely seeing and recognizing physical beauty isn’t wrong; rather, the problem comes when we cross the line of right/wrong and decide to pursue our lustful desires rather than flee from temptation.

To flee temptation, we need to ask GOD in earnest prayer to help us stay away from scenarios that would bring us into temptation, for the discernment to recognize the “do not cross” line, the wisdom to recognize the escape route, and the strength to take the escape route and flee when we should flee. Memorizing and meditating on GOD’s Word will help us to do all of this. The Holy Spirit will remind you of specific Scripture when you need it, but the Holy Spirit cannot remind you of what is not yet within you. So, it is of utmost importance that GOD’s Word fills us daily. This is why GOD’s Word is our Daily Bread. However, even when the Holy Spirit reminds us of specific words, we must be open to receiving the Holy Spirit’s conviction. It is much better to be convicted prior to sinning rather than being corrected after sinning. I speak from personal experience (which I will share with you soon enough).

At the root of most temptation is a real need or desire that GOD can fill, but we must trust in His timing. Too often we are seeking to fulfill right desires in the wrong ways. We sometimes fulfill natural needs in unnatural ways. And finally, we must have accountability. This is a must! It’s just a simple fact that we are stronger together. This very writing is an example of accountability and the wisdom of Proverbs 27:17 of how believers can sharpen each other. You confided in me about your struggle. In turn, I have provided you with some wisdom GOD has given to me, which is a much needed different perspective than you could do on your own. Likewise, I’m about to confess to you and it will be your brotherly love that will help me heal.

I want to preface this confession with the fact that I haven’t shared this with anyone since the day it happened. But as it is written in James 5:16, “Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.” Also, it is written in 1John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

In 2002, I dated a Christian girl when I had been an atheist. I was with her for one year exactly. I planned on marrying her, but she died on the very day of our anniversary date (11/03/03), which happened to be two days after my birthday (11/01). We were both 21 years of age when she died. It’s a long story that can be read in my testimony, but this devastating loss launched me on my quest for Truth and I ended up confessing Christ Jesus as Lord and Savior after He revealed Himself to me through five supernatural events spanned over a 12-month period of time. For a long time after her death, I never dated anyone because I could never get over her.

But eventually, about two years later (around 2005), I allowed myself to open up and not shut everyone out. It was at that time I met another girl. The problem was that she wasn’t Christian. This girl and I had a love/hate relationship with each other for many years but we never dated. After a lot of time spent with her, she eventually professed to being a Christian and even got baptized. But because of our weird relationship with each other (so close to each other yet never dating), we eventually went our own separate ways around 2010. A couple years went by without us talking. But after about two years, she came back into my life. She flew out from Oregon to see me where I lived in Alabama and we spent quite a few days together. Our feelings for each other rekindled. She somehow convinced me that she came to the conclusion that she should have always been with me and that she had always compared every guy to me. Over those days we spent together, we even talked about marriage. And at the end of 2012 (New Year’s Eve), which became New Year’s Day of 2013 (before I ever attended Bible College & Seminary), I sinned due to one mere moment of weakness. Things went too far for us that night and I gave my virginity to her that night/morning (technically on 1/01/13). Why? It was most likely because I had been single and lonely so long and I believed her when she talked about us getting married. Due to about seven years of tension and history between us, I gave her my virginity at the age of 31. It was quick, disappointing, and I felt regret. I had saved my virginity for my future wife all the way up until then. 31 years. I fought for my sexual purity for 31 years and then lost it due one moment of weakness. That’s all it took. But like David, I was not where I was supposed to have been or doing the things I should have been doing. I didn’t ask for accountability. I allowed her to sleep in my apartment. I said yes when she asked me to sleep in bed with her when I should have slept on the couch, etc. And afterwards, I knew it was wrong because she was not my wife. But I tried to justify my sin by telling myself that she was going to be my wife. It was a huge mistake.

After that girl got what she wanted, she told me she was flying back home and she was going to marry some other guy. I was completely devastated. Not only would we not be together, but I gave her my virginity (which belonged to my wife) and she was not going to be my wife. One moment of weakness brought me a couple years of pain in my heart because I had a hard time forgiving myself. I even felt like I didn’t deserve a wife after that because I gave that girl what belonged to my wife. But GOD eventually helped me heal. Two years later, in 2015, at the age of 33, I completely dedicated my entire life to serving the Lord in ministry and I started Bible College & Seminary. I’m currently 38 years of age and I have graduated Bible College & Seminary. But that one sinful experience will always be a part of my history. I had always been a slow learner, but I have now learned. I am happy to inform you that ever since 2015, I have conquered the pornography addiction, I’ve been celibate, and I have lived righteously to the best of my ability according the GOD’s Word.

However, I further confess that I still struggle with lustful thoughts and masturbation to this very day. For me, I am annoyed by my sex drive and I often vent my frustration in prayer to GOD. I have asked GOD why He had to take away the girl I truly wanted to marry the first time, and why I have always been met with rejection/denial from females ever since then. Why even give me this sex drive if I’m not to have a wife to fulfill this with? GOD has been silent regarding His specific answer to this question, but the Holy Spirit often reminds me of 2Corinthians 12:7-10
Because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, for this reason, to keep me from exalting myself, there was given me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me—to keep me from exalting myself! Concerning this I implored the Lord three times that it might leave me. And He has said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.’ Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. 10 Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong.”

However, it is my heart’s desire and my constant prayer that when I do have lustful thoughts, that GOD reveals the escape route to me and gives me courage to flee from temptation. But we must not pray for GOD to provide us with an escape if we are unwilling to take that escape. It is my desire to never pursue my lustful thoughts and allow it to transform into a sinful action. And this is why we must take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ (2Corinthians 10:5)! While we are not responsible for every thought that enters our heads, we are responsible for what we do with those thoughts. We can replace lustful thoughts if we abide by Philippians 4:8: “Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.”

Someone once helped me by telling me that if the lustful thoughts we are trying to get rid of involve another person, we can defuse the power of that lustful thought by turning that thought into a prayer for the other person’s well-being. By bringing that person before the Lord, we weaken the power of that lustful thought and we will be less likely to objectify him/her. We must recognize each person’s value as a creation of GOD and remember that GOD has higher plans for him/her that do not include us. When we bring our will into agreement with GOD’s will, we learn to see this person as GOD does, not as a lustful being would.

And finally, in Matthew 15:11-20, Jesus told us that what we allow within us affects what comes out from us. Jesus concluded in 15:19 by saying, “For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders.” Therefore, if we get our hearts and thoughts right, our actions should come into alignment with GOD’s will.

So, when you tell me that you feel like you’ve been set up to fail, I completely understand how you feel. But we both need to realize that feelings don’t determine facts and desires should never determine our direction. The Truth is that our innate sexual desire toward females is technically a good thing given to us by GOD. However, GOD was very clear in that these desires should only be fulfilled between husband and wife. And as Paul said in 1Corinthians 7:9, “But if they do not have self-control, let them marry; for it is better to marry than to burn with passion.” I cannot speak for you, but I believe GOD has called me to a life of singleness just as GOD called Jeremiah to a life of singleness (Jeremiah 16:1-2). Why? I don’t know. But I know GOD gives me the strength to do it. And as Paul said in 1Corinthians 7:17, “Only, as the Lord has assigned to each one, as God has called each, in this manner let him walk.” And the Holy Spirit keeps reminding me of what is written in 1Corinthians 7:32-34: “But I want you to be free from concern. One who is unmarried is concerned about the things of the Lord, how he may please the Lord; 33 but one who is married is concerned about the things of the world, how he may please his wife, 34 and his interests are divided.”

So, did GOD set us up to fail? In a way, yes— He did. But it’s not necessarily the bad thing many perceive it to be. Why not? It reveals our weakness and that we need GOD. Also, you need to understand that GOD also set us up for success. How so? Because we’re not saved by works, but by grace through faith. So, do we fail to live completely righteous lives all the time? Yes. But did GOD already provide a solution for this? Yes. Faith in Christ’s finished work and trusting Him for our salvation. When you think about it, GOD didn’t really set us up for failure; rather, GOD set us up for an opportunity to celebrate a future victory He gave to us as a gift. Will we struggle in this sinful fallen world? Yes. But is GOD’s grace sufficient for us? Yes. Will this struggle last forever? No. There will come a day when GOD restores everything to the way it should be. Until then, we do our best and allow GOD to do the rest. Amen.

PS— I’d like to collect your thoughts about what I’ve written. And I’d also like to turn our email into an article I can post in order to help others who might be struggling with the same things. So, would you mind if I did this? Of course, I would keep your identity secret. But I think it might help some people. But I’d like to collect your thoughts on this before I do that.

Brother, I asked for a coin of wisdom, and you gave me a whole chest. I thank the Lord for you and the way you along with His wisdom, almost flawlessly always answer me and my questions and struggles. Thank you so much.

Before I get into my response, yes you may use it. Use it so that others may find hope and light in this matter through our experiences and they may glorify God.

I’m so sorry with what happened to you and the girl you held dearly. That, and what happened with the other. I hope the Lord gives you the ability to find forgiveness in your heart towards her if He hasn’t done so already.
A lot of times, things that we cannot understand are allowed to happen so as to grow in anything that will keep us close to Him, or to steer us in the right direction. And because we are finite, we cannot know the benefit of such trials until we reach the point in our lives (or deaths) where we will understand and see the value that the pain we carried had all along. I will keep you in my prayers. I am honored that you decided to confess to me such a heavy thing on your heart when all we have is a few emails from one another. But glory be to God because through Him, our bond is far beyond blood and relationship. And so, things like this are possible. I have faith you are forgiven by our gracious Father in Heaven brother. Do NOT let the devil walk you in shame and condemnation. It’s time to move forward with the Lord.

I know what it’s like … To be very honest, I don’t know why God even bothers to love me and help me with lust the way He has so far. If I may also confess, I was someone who left the faith when I was 15-16 (I am 25 now and returned to the faith not even a year ago) to follow sexual passions. There would be times where I would masturbate and feel such a tight grip on my chest as I felt the Lord give me the conviction to stop, and I would drown it out for the sake of my pleasure. How can this God take me back with open arms after doing that? After WHOLEHEARTEDLY choosing my sexual pleasure over Him? But He is righteous and merciful. Also, during those years, I relentlessly pursued sexual immorality. Glory to God, the day He took me back, in a SNAP, YEARS AND YEARS of masturbation and pornography addiction where gone. But a wicked root still remains. So there is still struggle. A times, when I fail I often just cry and say I deserve this thorn in my side. That I deserve to be tormented every single time a girl crosses my eyesight. That I deserve to be tormented by uncomfortable feelings just because I’m hanging around women or friends and family members that of the female gender. I let my perversion get the best of me all those years, and now here I am. I am afraid to look at women, I am afraid to find them attractive, so much so that I violently walk away from any or feel guilty and beat myself over having any sort of attraction to their looks.

The last question I would have that I hope you are so kind to re-explain or elaborate more on, is:

So it’s ok to look at women and their bodies and find them attractive? I just feel bad in doing so. Or is lust looking at one, finding them appealing, and doing something wicked in response to that? Because all I ever do is just look.”

–Kevin

First and foremost, praise GOD for your deliverance and your newfound freedom! May you always walk in this freedom!

But it seems you and I share in our struggle the battle between conviction and condemnation. But you and I both know that GOD convicts us of our sin but Satan tries to condemn us because of it. Satan is the accuser and Jesus is the Mediator on our behalf. Don’t listen to the lies of the devil. Who does GOD say you are? Let us walk in righteousness and be who GOD says we are!

Your main concern is as you have written: “So it’s ok to look at women and their bodies and find them attractive? I just feel bad in doing so. Or is lust looking at one, finding them appealing, and doing something wicked in response to that? Because all I ever do is just look.

I believe you and I both know and understand the difference and where the line of right/wrong exists. Are we merely looking? You will know when you go beyond merely looking at a girl and appreciating her physical beauty. Obviously, we cross the line if we begin to undress her with our eyes, picture her naked, or intentionally pursue sexual fantasies about her. Now those thoughts might begin to form in our minds while looking at them, but that doesn’t mean we have to pursue those thoughts and allow them to grow into a problem. Our natural attraction to those girls doesn’t need to turn into sinful actions such as masturbating while pursuing sexual fantasies about those girls. Neither do we need to pursue our lust and literally have sex with them even if they give us consent to do so. Until a woman is your wife, the concealed areas of her body is off limits; they are concealed for a reason.

However, this does not mean that you can’t pursue a girl for a potential relationship. This does not mean we shouldn’t be attracted to girls. We can find girls attractive. We can even pursue girls in order to date them. However, what we must always possess in the forefront of our minds is that if the woman is not going to be your wife, she is in fact your sister in Christ and she will probably be another man’s wife. The key in all of this is to recognize where the “do not cross” lines exist. And once we understand where our boundaries are, we should commit ourselves to staying within those boundaries. So, in conclusion, I believe that looking at females and appreciating their physical beauty is not wrong. I believe the sin starts when we pursue lust and allow our thoughts to transform into wrong actions. And so we do not need to avoid interaction with females. Instead, we need to practice self-control and commit ourselves to pursue pure thoughts about them while we bring them before the Lord in prayer. If we truly love their souls (not merely lust after their bodies), we will desire what is best and what is right for them. So, even while we are actively pursuing women of interest, it is in our best interest to pray for their best interest. And if you pursue a woman the right way and she becomes your wife, then you will have freedom to experience the beauty of a covenant relationship and the sexual pleasure which accompanies it. Stay strong. Remain in the Lord.

“Gotcha. Thanks again, Pastor Trent! This has been so helpful. I just double-make sure because I literally hate freaking JUST because a woman crosses into my eyesight. And you are right! Thanks for the wisdom, and glory be to God for you and your ministry. I’ll be praying for you brother. “

Superhero: Ability & Availability

If you would rather read this message, the words are provided below…

This is Part 7 of my Superhero series. In the introduction of this series, I provided the argument that heroes are real and then I distinguished between heroes and superheroes. I also provided a list of what defines a superhero. In Part 1, we learned that superheroes recognize the absolute standard of Good and realize that evil is a mere privation of what is good. In Part 2, we learned that superheroes recognize the absolute moral standard and realize that what is wrong can only be known by the standard of what is right. In Part 3, I defined and expounded upon love because all superheroes are full of love and are compelled to act out from love. In Part 4, I explained that superheroes desire to save people from all forms of danger and/or death and this desire comes from love. In Part 5, we learned that superheroes are solution seekers. In Part 6, we saw that solution seekers are willing to sacrifice if necessary.

In this message (Part 7), we will see that sacrificial love steps forward and offers service. But in order to do that, we must be available. If we are able, we should also be willing. Superheroes need to be able and available.

With television shows such as American Idol, The X Factor, So You Think You Can Dance, America’s Got Talent, The Voice, etc., it’s obvious that our nation is infatuated with talent and entertainment. Even when our country went through a recession back in 2008-2009, box office sales for the movie theaters still boomed. With that said, I’m going to use the entertainment industry in order to help you better understand this message.

Actors Tom Cruise and Rob Lowe were both slated to play the lead role in the classic movie, “Footloose” (1984). The casting directors were impressed with Tom Cruise because of the famous underwear dance sequence he performed in “Risky Business” (1983); however, Tom Cruise was unavailable for the part because he was filming “All the Right Moves” (1983). Rob Lowe auditioned three times and had dancing ability and the ‘neutral teen’ look that the director wanted, but he pulled his knee; consequently, the injury rendered him unavailable and prevented him from getting the part. Kevin Bacon was offered the leading role for the Stephen King movie, “Christine” (1983) at the same time that he was asked to do a screen test for “Footloose.” The producers from “Footloose” convinced Kevin Bacon that turning down a sure role in “Christine” for a part he might not even get in “Footloose” was the wiser choice by telling him that if he did get the part for “Footloose,” the role would make him an instant star. And in just 30 seconds into the screen test reading, Kevin Bacon was offered the lead role in “Footloose.” However, it was the director of “Footloose,” who only after watching “Diner” (1982), convinced the producers to go with Kevin Bacon. And Kevin Bacon almost didn’t get the part in “Diner” because he was sick on the day of his screen test reading for the role of Fenwick. But Kevin Bacon had previously decided that his character (Fenwick) would probably be half-drunk during the entire movie anyway, so he forged ahead, auditioned, and then got the part. And because of all this, there is now what Hollywood refers to as the “six degrees of Kevin Bacon”:

superhero-available-01

Here is the same information (as above), but put into a different perspective: Kevin Bacon only got the part in “Diner” because he made himself available for the audition even though he was sick. Because he made himself available and got the part in “Diner,” the director of “Footloose” saw him in “Diner” and then had reason to push Kevin Bacon to his producers; consequently, Kevin Bacon got the lead role in “Footloose.” However, the only reason Kevin Bacon got the lead role in “Footloose” was because he turned down “Christine” and made himself available for “Footloose.” However, Kevin Bacon was only chosen after Tom Cruise and Rob Lowe had both been unavailable.

Now, the only reason I chose to use this example was because Kevin Bacon played the evil villain, Sebastian Shaw, in the 2011 movie, X-Men: First Class. Kevin Bacon is now forever a part of superhero history and because of that, he is now in my book about superheroes. So, let’s use this message of ability and availability to see how it applies to our lives according to GOD’s Word:

One day as Jeroboam was leaving Jerusalem, the prophet Ahijah from Shiloh met him along the way. Ahijah was wearing a new cloak. The two of them were alone in a field, and Ahijah took hold of the new cloak he was wearing and tore it into twelve pieces. Then he said to Jeroboam, ‘Take ten of these pieces, for this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: “I am about to tear the kingdom from the hand of Solomon, and I will give ten of the tribes to you! But I will leave him one tribe for the sake of my servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel. For Solomon has abandoned me and worshiped Ashtoreth, the goddess of the Sidonians; Chemosh, the god of Moab; and Molech, the god of the Ammonites. He has not followed my ways and done what is pleasing in my sight. He has not obeyed my decrees and regulations as David his father did.”‘
(1Kings 11:29-33) -NLT

Solomon was David’s son. Solomon started out as an average man, became the wisest man (1Kings 3:5-12), but then ended up crashing and burning due to his sins. The irony is that Solomon was wise enough to foresee his downfall, but he blinded himself to Truth because he chose to set his focus on personal pleasure. Solomon’s story saddens me and not just because he was David’s son or that he had once been so wise, but because his story is like many Christians of today’s culture. So many Christians today have taken their focus off GOD’s will and have become distracted by the pleasures that our sinful society offers. Let’s examine what tripped Solomon up and how it relates to us today: GOD’s Word tells us that Solomon abandoned GOD and worshiped Ashtoreth, Chemosh, and Molech.

Ashtoreth (Astarte, Ashtarte, Ashtaroth, Ishtar, Attar):

This deity was a mother goddess linked with fertility, love, and war. This deity was associated with carved trees or nature, as being the female deity of the moon, and also associated with sexual immorality. Sex and nature. Or as the hippies claimed, “it’s love and peace, man!” But as we learned in chapter 3, sex and love are not one and the same: sex needs love to be relevant and meaningful; love does not need sex to be relevant and meaningful. Love can survive and even thrive without sex, but sex without love is pleasure without purpose. Solomon ruined his life because he allowed sex to become his love. Ashtoreth was essentially the same ‘god’ that the hippies of the 1960’s worshiped. The goal was satisfaction for self. And so many of those misguided hippies of the 1960’s ended up being the people who influenced our politics and society; consequently, many of the dangerous indoctrinations and misguided beliefs have carried over into the present day in which we live. Nowadays, worship of Ashtoreth can be compared with the people who call themselves “ecosexuals” because they essentially worship ‘Mother Nature’ and center their lives on the pleasure of sex. The scattered remains of Ashtoreth are still evident in the entertainment and advertisement industries. If you haven’t noticed, sex sells. If you haven’t noticed, the lure of lust is the rust that causes a person’s stainless steel character to corrode and crumble.

Chemosh:

According to the Moabite Stone (the Mesha Stele), Chemosh was associated with the goddess Ashteroth. This deity was [in general] of the same nature as Baal (Baal-Hadid). The word baal means “lord.” Baal was most often associated with being the god of weather, war, or fertility. So, Baal was a god who was believed to enable the earth to produce crops and people to produce children. Nowadays, our secular society who supports scientism essentially worships themselves as the only beings capable of ensuring the growth of crops and allowing/denying human fertility. The modern version of Chemosh or Baal is most likely celebrities and scientists. Many people idolize celebrities, viewing them as superhuman; many people essentially worship scientists, viewing them as our saviors.

Molech (Moloch, Molek, Melek, Malik):

Children were burned to death as a sacrifice while worshiping a false god. Nowadays, Molech can be compared to Planned Parenthood and the thousands of abortions (murders) that take place every day. As of 2018, it was estimated that Americans have aborted (murdered) about 60 million babies since our sinful society demanded the ‘right’ to do so in 1973. (Click here to read my logical argument against abortion.)

Ancient Sin Is Modern Sin:

There’s nothing new about sin; Satan is subtle, evil is deliberate, and the devil’s demons haven’t changed their tactics. Even today, people are still placing their focus on false gods and idols. And if a wise man such as Solomon was able to be beguiled by physical beauty and enticed and entranced by the temptations that surrounded him, you better believe that you are susceptible to falling as well. In fact, GOD’s Word tells us that we are not exempt from falling:

“These are all warning markers—danger!—in our history books, written down so that we don’t repeat their mistakes. Our positions in the story are parallel—they at the beginning, we at the end—and we are just as capable of messing it up as they were. Don’t be so naive and self-confident. You’re not exempt. You could fall flat on your face as easily as anyone else. Forget about self-confidence; it’s useless. Cultivate God-confidence. No test or temptation that comes your way is beyond the course of what others have had to face.”
(1Corinthians 10: 11-13) -MSG

“God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.”
(1Corinthians 10:13) -NLT

“Stay alert, be in prayer, so you don’t enter the danger zone without even knowing it. Don’t be naive. Part of you is eager, ready for anything in God; but another part is as lazy as an old dog sleeping by the fire.”
(Mark 14:38) -MSG

“So be on your guard, not asleep like the others. Stay alert and be clearheaded.”
(1Thessalonians 5:6) -NLT

But referring back to 1Kings 11:29-33, Ahijah the prophet tore his cloak into 12 pieces and announced that Jeroboam was to replace Solomon as king. Even if Ahijah had not told Jeroboam what the tearing of the cloak meant, the same thing was about to happen to Solomon and to Jeroboam regardless. Most of the time, we experience only signs and symbolism in our lives without any explanations. GOD doesn’t always tell us the ‘why.’ Therefore, we need to constantly and consistently keep our focus on GOD and the ways of GOD so that we can have our eyes open, alert, and ready to see the signs that GOD gives us when they arrive in our lives. We need to pay attention, be aware of where we are and if we’re living right before GOD. We need to keep ourselves in check at all times. Indeed — check yourself before you wreck yourself! We need to constantly self-examine ourselves to ensure we’re living the right way.

“But I have taken you in hand. Rule to your heart’s content! You are to be the king of Israel. If you listen to what I tell you and live the way I show you and do what pleases me, following directions and obeying orders as my servant David did, I’ll stick with you no matter what. I’ll build you a kingdom as solid as the one I built for David. Israel will be yours!”
(1Kings 11: 37-39) -MSG

GOD declared a promise to Jeroboam while pouring out His heart and love. GOD chose Jeroboam. However, let’s be honest — GOD only chooses and works with whomever is available. Why? Because we have the great gift of free will. And if someone isn’t willing, that person would not be available. This is why GOD always promises things, but inserts special stipulations into the contract agreement. GOD can only follow through with the promise or the miracle if we do our part. This is the reason why so many people have come and gone as leaders. If there is only one choice to work with, GOD will use that person until someone better is available to use, and so on and so forth. If we are chosen as someone of great significance, as an anointed one, it’s important that we always do our best and try to continually improve. There will always be a chance that someone coming out of the shop will be better than you. A lot of people will make themselves available yet they lack ability. A lot of people have ability, but who will make themselves available? There will always be a chance that you will injure your knee at the ‘audition’ and render yourself unavailable to be chosen for the part. We don’t want to be replaced by someone because we didn’t try our best. It would be even worse if GOD replaced us with inanimate and inarticulate items such as a blue cord. We need to show up to the ‘audition’ even if we don’t feel 100%! However, if we do get replaced by someone when we do try our best, then it was simply for the best and we need to move on. But we must try our best. However, to do that we must first make ourselves available. Ability is useless without availability; if you have the ability to act yet are unavailable to act, you won’t act and thus your ability is useless.

Ponder on this: there are more chances for your replacement the higher you get up the ladder. Look at it this way: if your job is to crawl into pipes/tunnels and clean out the sewage and waste that clogged the pipes/tunnels, how many people do you think will be after your job? Not many. But if you are a celebrity with fame and fortune, how many people would want your job then? Almost everyone. The better the position you are placed in, the greater expectation of your work, and the greater the risk of being replaced if you do not meet the expectation.

“Much will be required of everyone who has been given much. And even more will be expected of the one who has been entrusted with more.”
(Luke 12:48) -HCSB

“But then Jeroboam thought, ‘It won’t be long before the kingdom is reunited under David. As soon as these people resume worship at The Temple of God in Jerusalem, they’ll start thinking of Rehoboam king of Judah as their ruler. They’ll then kill me and go back to King Rehoboam.’ So the king came up with a plan: He made two golden calves. Then he announced, ‘It’s too much trouble for you to go to Jerusalem to worship. Look at these—the gods who brought you out of Egypt!’ He put one calf in Bethel; the other he placed in Dan. This was blatant sin. Think of it—people traveling all the way to Dan to worship a calf!”
(1Kings 12:26-30) -MSG

Jeroboam replaced Solomon as king and then wrecked himself as soon as he started because he did not check himself. Jeroboam didn’t check his motives or align himself with GOD’s Word — his focus was on himself instead of doing GOD’s will. That’s why GOD needs to always be first. If we do GOD’s will, then we will be blessed in the process.

“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.”
(Matthew 6:33) -NLT

Unfortunately for GOD and everyone under Jeroboam’s rule, Jeroboam was the man that GOD had to work with for the time being. Can you believe that?! That guy was the best man for the job as king even though he was not suited for the position at all! (I can believe it. I can think of at least a couple presidents in our American history who weren’t suited to be president.) But out of all people who made themselves available, GOD selected Jeroboam because he was the closest thing to a leader who was available. That would be unbelievable if only it didn’t match so many other descriptions of world leaders throughout our history; Jeroboam’s story matches the accuracy of what we already know to be true throughout world history. That means that the entire lot of people GOD had to choose from were just a bunch of lukewarm, fence-sitting, selfish sinners or worse. They lost their edge. Their fire went out.

“So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.”
(Revelation 3:16) -ESV

In Revelation 3, the church of Laodicea receives no praise from the Lord. GOD states that because they are neither hot nor cold and merely lukewarm, GOD is going to spit them out of His mouth. The people claimed that they needed nothing because they were wealthy, but GOD called them wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, naked, and shameful (Revelation 3:17-18). GOD proclaims His love, advises they accept His discipline, and admonishes them to repent. The insipid are intolerable; their indecisiveness leads to indigestion. Indifference leads to idleness. Fence-sitting, couch-potato, comfort-Christianity receives no praise (Hebrews 10:38; 12:4-13; Proverbs 3:11-12)! In Revelation 3:20, Jesus tells us that He stands at the door and knocks, simply waiting for someone to respond and allow Him in. And when that person allows Jesus within, He will have dinner with that person. Why is this important? In Mark 2:15-17, we see that this is how Levi — a tax collector — became Matthew, the disciple. Once we allow Jesus within and we fellowship with Him, hearing His Word in itself would be the meal we would be eating; consequently, being filled with the Bread of Life, life would exude out of our very pores and we would be on fire for Christ, thus incapable of being lukewarm. This letter to the church of Laodicea concludes with a promise to the victor that he/she will have the right to sit with Him on His throne. This promise is to say that we will be part of the family and will share in His glory.

I don’t know about you, but both the stories of Jeroboam and the church of Laodicea motivates me to act righteously. If I’m not chosen as someone of great significance, that means that there must be someone out there who is a better person than I am and that he/she was chosen for the job. GOD seeks ability, but works with who is available; therefore, we need to make ourselves available!

Are you available? Have you allowed your heart to be available to GOD? Once you make yourself available, you then put yourself in the running. If you don’t get chosen for a specific job, don’t get discouraged — that just means there is someone better suited for that particular job. No big deal. That doesn’t mean that you should drop out of the running though! You are perfect for a particular job, it’s just a matter of patience to discover where GOD needs you to be. GOD knows what you are best at, what you’re good at, what you’re alright at, and even what you’re bad at. GOD wants to use the gifts, talents, and abilities that He gave to you for how they would be used in the best way. Therefore, make yourself available. You cannot go to auditions if you don’t make yourself available for the auditions. You cannot get the part if you don’t audition. And when you audition, you should not give a halfhearted audition — you should put forth 100% effort and do your best while auditioning even if you don’t feel 100%. Every single new ‘audition’ is a new opportunity for you to prove that you are the right one to be chosen.

There are many roles in acting just like there are many roles that we Christians play in the huge ‘movie’ called Life. GOD is the writer, producer, director, script supervisor, executive producer, camera operator, the sound guy, the editor, etc… GOD is also the casting director. GOD created this ‘movie’ called Life; in addition, He knows who is best suited for what role. We need to place our trust in GOD (Proverbs 3:5-6). GOD places His trust in us just as a director places his/her trust in an actor/actress. It’s a mutual trust. The movie can’t be great without the actors — and the Director knows that. GOD still needs ‘actors’ and ‘actresses’ to fill the roles in Life. Are you available? Don’t concern yourself about when you will get chosen — it will happen. Patience… GOD has a specific role that He wants you to play, but there is a specific time in which He needs you to fill that role. Practice your ability, but be available always. Always go to your ‘auditions.’ Always try your best. Never get discouraged. Understand that it’s just a matter of time. And in the meantime, constantly try to better yourself as a person. There’s always room for improvement.

Jeroboam got cast as the part of the king, but I guarantee you that the audience was unhappy with the selection and the movie bombed. But Jeroboam got the part because he was the best one for the role who was also available to be used as that role. There were better men than Jeroboam (no doubt), but perhaps they were too far away in the world to be cast as the king for that particular place. Or perhaps those better men were already playing a role in GOD’s movie somewhere else. GOD knew that the movie wasn’t great with Jeroboam as king, but GOD had someone else in mind for the role of King, and His name was Jesus. That’s part of the storyline in this movie we call Life – GOD allowed bad kings so that we would appreciate the Good King. But GOD’s planning and timing had to be precise. So, GOD worked with who was available for the time being. Are you available? Let’s learn a lesson from the prophet Isaiah on how we should respond in life:

Then I said, ‘It’s all over! I am doomed, for I am a sinful man. I have filthy lips, and I live among a people with filthy lips. Yet I have seen the King, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.’ Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a burning coal he had taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. He touched my lips with it and said, ‘See, this coal has touched your lips. Now your guilt is removed, and your sins are forgiven.’ Then I heard the Lord asking, ‘Whom should I send as a messenger to this people? Who will go for us?’ I said, ‘Here I am. Send me.’ ”
(Isaiah 6:5-8) -NLT

Isaiah’s humility helped him realize he was a sinful man. Isaiah’s recognition of his sinful nature enabled him to repent of his sins and receive forgiveness. Isaiah’s willingness to do GOD’s will made him available to be chosen for anointed and appointed ability.

I challenge you to make yourself available! Be the most righteous person you can possibly be, be patient, and be persistent. GOD has a plan for you. To insure your availability, ensure that you are living in alignment with GOD’s Word. Live as righteous as possible. What happens when the right people aren’t available? GOD has to choose a Jeroboam or a blue cord. Be available. Don’t make GOD choose a Jeroboam because you weren’t available. Are you available? Can GOD depend on you to be chosen as the superhero who feeds that homeless person on the street? Or are you going to be in the strip club thereby rendering yourself unavailable? Can GOD depend on you to be chosen as the superhero who tells the truth when everyone else is too afraid to speak up? Or are you going to be hiding your head in the sand thereby rendering yourself unavailable? Can GOD depend on you to be chosen as the superhero to speak a miracle over someone’s life and help heal someone? Or are you going to be intoxicated at a party thereby rendering yourself unavailable? If you choose to love, desire to do GOD’s will, seek solutions, and are willing to sacrifice, you have the ability. But are you available? And will you help others be ready and available for when Christ returns?

“Always be ready! You don’t know when the Son of Man will come.”
(Matthew 24:44) -CEV

If you’re not ready and available when GOD calls you, how are you going to help others be ready and available when Christ comes? If you are able, you should also be willing. Be able. Be available.

Are You A Blue Cord Bum?

If you would rather read this message, the words are provided below:

“GOD spoke to Moses and Aaron: ‘How long is this going to go on, all this grumbling against me by this evil-infested community? I’ve had my fill of complaints from these grumbling Israelites’ ”
(Numbers 14:26-27) -MSG

In other translations of the Bible, GOD called the grumbling Israelites “sinful” or “wicked,” but in The Message translation, they were called “evil-infested.” I believe that is a good paraphrase for a sinful or wicked people. But why did GOD call the Israelites evil-infested? Well, GOD had performed many miracles and signs of wonders in order to free them from Pharaoh’s captivity in Egypt. GOD freed them from slavery and yet they complained about being free! GOD eventually brought the Israelites to a land of which evil people inhabited. GOD simply told the Israelites to take over the land. Moses sent 12 people to spy out the land and to see what it looked like. When the 12 people returned, they all agreed that it was indeed the good land GOD had said it was and that it flowed with milk and honey; however, 10 out of the 12 who investigated the land lamented and said that the mission was impossible because the people there were big and frightening. An astonishing 83% of the scouting crew said that GOD’s request couldn’t be done! Only Joshua and Caleb were solution seekers and said that it could be done. And then the Israelites wanted to stone Joshua and Caleb to death because of their optimism and faith. (What?!) So, let’s dig deeper and define what the community looked like to GOD and why they appeared to be evil-infested.

Infested: To inhabit or overrun in numbers or quantities large enough to be harmful, threatening, or obnoxious.

A definition of infested says, “large enough to be harmful, threatening.” Wait – threatening? Why would the community be of a threat to GOD? They weren’t – the community of people were a threat to themselves! They chose to allow evil to corrupt their lives. Their decisions. Their choices. Their free will. And their choices were infecting others throughout the community. Negativity spreads like wildfire; fear and doubt spreads like a plague. And when GOD asked Moses and Aaron, “How long is this going to go on,” GOD wasn’t actually expecting an estimated time of the approximate expiration date of their evil ways. GOD basically said, “Moses. Aaron. The people in your community increase in wickedness as time goes on; the evil grows greater every day.” And when GOD said, “I’ve had my fill of complaints,” He basically said, “I can no longer accept anymore of their evil and ungratefulness and lack of faith. Due to their rebellion and lack of repentance, they have brought judgment upon themselves.”

“Not one of you will enter the land and make your home there, the firmly and solemnly promised land, except for Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.”
(Numbers 14:30) -MSG

The only people GOD said He would allow to enter into the promised land were the two solution seekers. That’s how important it is to be a solution seeker.

“The Lord said to Moses, ‘Speak to the people of Israel, and tell them to make tassels on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and to put a cord of blue on the tassel of each corner. And it shall be a tassel for you to look at and remember all the commandments of the Lord, to do them, not to follow after your own heart and your own eyes, which you are inclined to whore after. So you shall remember and do all my commandments, and be holy to your God.’ ”
(Numbers 15:37-40) -ESV

People often concern themselves with things that simply don’t matter. They worry, have anxiety, and stress. For those people, they need to have constant reminders as to what truly matters. Some people don’t live the right way; some people refuse to abide by GOD’s absolute moral standard. Those people need constant reminders as to how to live the right way.  GOD was to the Israelites like a parent is to a child who constantly reminds the child, “No. Don’t do that. Don’t touch that. Don’t put that in your mouth! I know that’s what you want, but it’s not what you need. Stop it! Keep your hands to yourself! Put that back! If you don’t listen to me, you’re going to get in trouble!”

“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”
(Proverbs 27:17) -NIRV

First and foremost, GOD’s Word is supposed to keep us in alignment with GOD’s will. If you’re not reading GOD’s Word, how would you know GOD’s will? It is of utmost importance that we read GOD’s Word. But apart from GOD’s Word, people are supposed to be our constant reminders; we are supposed to help each other out. Refer back to Numbers 15:37-40. The community was never meant to rely on a blue cord to remind them of how to live – they were supposed to set their hearts on GOD’s will and then continually remind each other so that they wouldn’t become the evil-infested community that they became.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.”
(Proverbs 3:5-6) -NLT

How is one able to trust the Lord with all of his/her heart unless the Lord is already within that person’s heart? The grumbling Israelites – who witnessed many miracles! – simply did not have GOD within their hearts; otherwise, their faith would have cast out the doubt and their love would have expelled the fear that had stowed away within them. Perhaps they had GOD in their hearts when the Red Sea was parted and then closed up again on the Egyptians who had been pursuing them. But by this point in their journey, GOD was out of their hearts and fear and doubt was dwelling within them instead.

Unlike qualified U.S. Army infantrymen who receive a blue cord as an honor of completing their advanced individual training, GOD basically demoted the Israelites and put blue cords in charge instead of them. For the Israelites, receiving the blue cord was not an honor – it was a dishonorable discharge. That’s how lukewarm and mediocre the community’s faith had become. Ponder on that for a moment. How sad is that? Can you imagine getting fired from your job and your boss telling you that he was hiring a blue cord as your replacement? But that’s what happens when you become lukewarm because GOD detests lukewarm faith (Revelation 3:16). What I’m about to say obviously isn’t in the Bible, but imagine if the following conversation between GOD and the Israelites had existed:

GOD: “Grumbling Israelite, you’re fired! Blue cord, you’re hired!”

Israelite: “Wait! What?! The blue cord is taking my place? But it can’t even think! It doesn’t talk! It doesn’t do anything! How can a blue cord be my replacement?!”

GOD: “Truly, I tell you – that blue cord has more faith than you! The only thing that blue cord proclaims is my Holiness! That blue cord will proclaim that I am Holy, I am righteous, and I am faithful. Because every time you look at that blue cord, your very own mind will be reminded of how great and loving I am.”

In this present time in which we live, we have created our own versions of the ‘blue cord’ and they have become religious mediocre reminders of who a true Christian is supposed to be. We’ve created bumper stickers for our cars, book markers with scripture verses on them, bracelets, rings, picture frames, cross necklaces, and even t-shirts. These are all modern-day versions of the ‘blue cord’ – mediocre reminders as to how we should live. Now, I’m not saying that any of those items are bad. I am merely saying that we need to be the ‘Blue Cord Clan,’ not inanimate and inarticulate items! Items work as a reminder only for a short time and then they become camouflaged with the rest of the world because people become accustomed to seeing them. It’s called desensitization. It’s like the wacky waving inflatable arm-flailing tube man that became popular in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s that is now completely ineffective in 2019. In fact, the shape of that item even resembles the cross; conversely, to many atheists, an image of Jesus on the cross might as well be the inflatable tube man. It’s sad, but true. Once people are so used to seeing these items on a daily basis, people tend to forget the meaning behind the items and they no longer serve as an effective reminder. We – the people – need to be personal reminders for other people.

I want to give you an example of a ‘blue cord.’ Back when I was a property manager of an apartment community, my regional manager told me that I had to put out balloons at the front of the property every single day in order to attract prospective residents. The balloons worked, but only at first. After a certain amount of time had passed, the balloons just became a part of the landscape and no one seemed to notice anymore. Why not? Because the balloons were always there and they never changed. They weren’t personal, engaging, or otherwise inviting. They simply existed. In addition, many of the other apartment communities in that city did the exact same thing. People became accustomed to them being there and no longer paid them any attention. In the same regard, our ‘blue cord’ items such as cross necklaces have lost the ability to gain attention and effectively remind people of GOD’s love. In fact, I have seen sinners wear the cross necklace simply because it was made of gold or filled with diamonds. Many people use these ‘blue cord’ items to enhance their sense of fashion, but the message of the Gospel has been lost in the sinful society who has accepted superficial icons yet rejected repentance and real relationship.

Rihanna, for example, though depicted wearing a cross in these images, is a self-proclaimed “good girl gone bad” and she promotes promiscuity proudly. In the pseudo-feminism ideology of today, behaving in such a degrading way is viewed as liberating; however, sexual sin is not GOD’s will (1Corinthians 6:15-20). To be fair, I acknowledge that only Rihanna knows if she has truly accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior; however, by her actions she is not an accurate reflection of Christ. Like it or not, Rihanna is a role model for all girls everywhere who have access to magazines, television, or the internet because Rihanna is a current celebrity. The truth is that the oversexualization of her songs and performances will cause girls to believe that girls should flaunt their bodies, use their bodies to get what they want, and that casual sexual intercourse is ‘normal’ and acceptable. But the truth is that sex matters. The truth is that sex is for marriage and marriage needs to be defended. The truth is that the oversexualization of our society produces the pervasive plague known as pornography and also contributes to the abhorrent act of abortion. The truth is that representatives of Christ are never to cause someone else to stumble into sin (Romans 14; 1Corinthians 8). And if you don’t believe me that we have a problem of oversexualization, then perform a Google image search for “oversexualization” and examine the multiple pages that showcase our problem.

Is this the same woman depicted wearing the cross (above)? Sadly, yes.

If Rihanna claims to be a Christian, then I’m going to call her out: she is not in alignment with GOD’s will and she is not an accurate reflection/representative of Christ and needs to repent. If, on the other hand, Rihanna denies being a Christian, she has only affirmed through her actions what I previously stated in regards to unbelievers accepting superficial icons yet rejecting repentance and real relationship.

“My brothers and sisters, you were chosen to be free. But don’t use your freedom as an excuse to live under the power of sin. Instead, serve one another in love.”
(Galatians 5:13) -NIRV

Who are you? Are you a personal reminder to people about how to live for GOD? When people see you and the decisions you make, are they reminded that Christians are awesome and loving people? Or are you a ‘blue cord’ to be ignored? After all, the ‘blue cord’ is limited in its ability to call attention to GOD’s greatness. The ‘blue cord’ was only meant to be a reminder so that the people would wake up and start a revival. So, who are you? Are you someone who walks around with a cross necklace, hoping your fashion sense will remind people of how we should live, yet you pass by a homeless person without offering a meal? Are you someone who needs a personal reminder to remind you how to live the right way? If you’re a Christian, then act like it! You need to be an example to others, be a constant reminder, help them stay on track, and keep focused. We are to discern GOD’s will and not conform to the patterns of this world (Romans 12:2).

Unlike a ‘blue cord,’ we are versatile and innovative and are not limited to our ability to be a reminder or reflection of Jesus. I don’t want to be a ‘blue cord’ that has lost all meaning to the world. Think about it! If you were to see an actual blue cord hanging from a shirt in this present time in which we live, would you be reminded of GOD? Probably not. You might be reminded of GOD now that I’ve told you this message, but I’m fairly certain that most of you wouldn’t think of GOD when seeing an actual blue cord. Not unless you’re super spiritual and are giving thanks to GOD for the materials that have been made available to us so that the blue cord you see could be there at the moment you see that cord. However, let’s be honest: how often do we give thanks to GOD while we’re out and about living the daily routines of our lives? (Your answer should be, “Not enough.”)

The ‘blue cord’ has lost its meaning to this world; it only serves as a reminder to those who know that it is supposed to actually be a reminder. If an audience were to be seated in an auditorium and a blue cord was dangling in front of a microphone, what would an audience get out of that? It is more than likely that the audience would not be reminded of GOD’s love, they would not understand the significance, and they would leave. A blue cord by itself says nothing. The meaning behind that blue cord has been lost in time. And how much more time is needed before the meaning of our fish symbol <>< gets lost in time? Maybe it will, maybe it won’t. But it’s just the same to unbelievers. The ‘blue cords’ have no power to change hearts of the unbelievers. I should know – I was once one of them! So, how did I get saved? By personal relationship. (See my other article, “Why I Am A Christian” for my testimony and defense of the Christian faith.)

The ‘blue cord’ items that we have created as Christians do not possess the power of reminding people of GOD’s love in the same capacity that we humans possess. We can speak and be heard. We can actually listen to people and help address their concerns. We are able to alter our approach in order to effectively convey the message to the listener. A ‘blue cord’ is limited in what it can do. We need to be the personal representatives of the Truth of GOD’s love.

I want to be a personal reminder, just as Joshua and Caleb were personal reminders to their community. And every single time someone sees me, I want them to think of Jesus and what they should be doing and how they should be living. If people see us and think of Christ, yet think horrible of Christ due to our horrible actions, we have failed to accurately reflect Christ. It is extremely important that we live out a life of love so that we will accurately reflect Christ. If people see us and think of Christ, and think good thoughts about Christ due to our good deeds, we can help those who are lost and lead them to Jesus.

The idea of this ‘Blue Cord Clan’ is so that people are reminded of GOD’s love, mercy, and grace every time they look at you! The only reason why the blue cord works as a reminder is because it stands out from the rest of the attire. I challenge you to stand out, speak out, reach out, and invite others in. Be the reflection and the reminder of Christ’s love. And if you do happen to wear the modern-day ‘blue cord’ items such as shirts, bumper stickers, hats, etc., you need to make sure that you’re not giving GOD a bad name! Don’t give love a bad name. If you’re representing GOD, do so the right way! Our symbols mean nothing to unbelievers. What matters is the way we live. If we do wrong while representing GOD’s name, the unbelievers will be quick to blame and proclaim that GOD does not have a good name thereby putting us to shame. We need to be the accurate reflection of Christ’s love in all that we do. Don’t allow a ‘blue cord’ to take your job! So, right now, I challenge you to find the nearest ‘blue cord’ item and to tell it, “You’re not taking my job!” And just for clarification, Jesus told us what we’re supposed to be doing:

Jesus came and told his disciples, ‘I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’ ”
(Matthew 28:18-20) -NLT

We have a duty we are called to do. Not our bumper stickers; not our t-shirts. You. Me. Us. As Christians, we need to accept our call of duty and “go and make disciples.”

Church History (Introduction)

What does church history look like? When reading and studying the entire history of the church, we must keep our focus on the bigger picture and compare what GOD’s Word actually teaches to what GOD’s people actually did or did not do. There has always been and will always be deviation from Truth and lights that get extinguished from the church, leaving only darkness in some areas and at some times. This all is from the Fall. From Cain murdering his brother, Abel, to the Day of Christ’s return and the battle of Armageddon, GOD’s people and the church will always be forced to shine light through the darkness of this world. Sadly, when evil infiltrates and contaminates GOD’s people, the world is left with doubt about GOD and His Word. And when they look at the stained glass in the church window, they are uncertain if the color red should represent the claim of Christ’s sacrificial blood or the notorious fame of a blood-thirsty mass of supercilious saints who masquerade about with malicious motives and pious performances. GOD’s people must live out a delicate balance of love and Truth. Even the slightest ‘one-degree’ deviation demonstrates demonic deeds that make the world believe blood-saturated saints to be devils in disguise and Christ a mere guise.

This is what church history looks like — it is one long war with many battles of GOD’s people trying to keep the faith, defend Truth, yet all the while correct the mistakes that have tarnished the perfect name of GOD. As representatives of GOD, Christians, with wrong actions, are capable of driving people away from right belief. I recently encountered the trending hashtag on Twitter, “ChurchToo”, which essentially was used for people to share their horrible stories of how church members or church leaders abused their position and power in order to sexually assault people, or mentally or physically abuse people. Are all the accusations true? Probably not. This hashtag popped up only after sexual allegations against celebrities became popular news headlines and Hollywood started devouring itself like a king snake swallowing another snake. Many unbelievers probably took advantage of the situation in order to throw mud on the church. However, many of the “ChurchToo” accusations are undoubtedly true, coming from victims who had once been afraid to speak up but now emboldened to do so because of what’s happening in Hollywood. It is all a sobering reminder of the real problem of sin in this world and humanity’s inability to save themselves. While reading and studying church history, it is important to keep in mind the bigger picture of the Creator’s original design and intent, the Fall, and the purpose of Christ to reunite the creation with Creator. Keep these following points in mind while reading and studying church history:

  • Humanity’s inability and often refusal to abide by the absolute moral standard does not prove GOD’s standard to be wrong, it only reveals that the Law is good and necessary (read Romans 7).
  • Purity is good & commendable, which is highlighted by the uproar against immorality. The Law is good and necessary, which is highlighted by the uproar against injustice.
  • The church is not a country club for saints but a hospital for sinners (read Matthew 9:11-13). The church is not a place for perfect people, but for finite and fallible fallen people who need a perfect GOD.
  • Everyone makes mistakes. Everyone needs Jesus, all the time, even those in the church — especially those in the church.
  • The church is not above correction; in fact, all Christians should be held to a higher standard because they should know better (read James 3:1; 4:17).
  • We should not confuse the problem of sin with the only solution of Jesus and the absolute moral standard as being the problem. The mistakes of humanity are not accurate reflections of the character quality of the perfect GOD.
  • To purge the church of sin is to restore the church to righteousness; restored churches will help victims heal from pseudo-saints.
  • Sin is the problem, not the church, unless sin is in the church, then the church becomes a problem, but not the problem.

It all leads back to the beginning and we must keep our focus on the bigger picture and compare what GOD’s Word actually teaches to what GOD’s people actually did or did not do. For it is GOD’s Word and only GOD’s Word that should define how the church is to be both operated and viewed. And with that said, may GOD’s light of Truth shine as you read and study even the darkest periods of the church and remember that the church is the purified Bride of Christ at the end of days. View the church as a total makeover transformation, much like we have seen on reality television shows. The church is to be viewed as a whole and seen as Christ will see her at the end of days — she’s beautiful! Just as individual humans have had bad pasts before becoming good later in life, the church is the same. Just as individual humans have seemed ugly prior to receiving a total makeover transformation and then looking marvelous, the church is the same. Don’t judge the church by her past, judge the church by who she strives to become and who Jesus tells us she will be. Church history reveals the growth of the church. Just as Abraham’s descendants are beyond counting (Genesis 15:5), the church started out with a dozen disciples and it will end with a countless number (Revelation 7:9). Don’t judge a sequoia tree by the sprout or seed — only in its final stage will you know what its glorious state will be.

before-after-2

before-after-1

If you are already a Christian, then church history is your family history. Studying church history is like opening a photo album with commentary and exploring family heritage. If you are a Christian and do not know church history, it is imperative that you take the journey to learn the past. Our past history will help mature us for the future by rooting us in reality, replacing ignorance with Truth, and opening us up to understanding of what actually happened rather than us assuming what might have happened or what we wished would have happened. The beauty of church history is that it enables us to learn from past mistakes, which will help us to grow in righteousness and help us to stay in alignment. Church history provides us with perspective and helps us plan for our purpose. As you learn church history, may you be in awe of GOD’s faithfulness despite humanity’s unfaithfulness. Though church history is the study of the works of men and women, it is ultimately the study of the work of GOD.

Purity

(Matthew 5:8) –GW
“Blessed are those whose thoughts are pure. They will see God.”

(Proverbs 25:4) –MSG
“Remove impurities from the silver and the silversmith can craft a fine chalice.”

Purity is commendable. What person commends another for his/her lack of purity? What element is desired to be impure? It should be our goal to remove impurities. Silver (or gold or diamonds for that matter), would not be as valuable or desirable as they are without the process that removes impurities. Why? Purity is beautiful. Is a diamond desired unless it meets the four C’s during inspection? The inspector examines the diamond for Cut, Clarity, Color, and Carat. The purity determines the quality.

Ponder on this: pure silver has the highest electrical and thermal conductivity of all metals. That means that the conductivity is reliable. People desire to use pure silver on circuit boards when they need the circuit board to work right the first time and every time. Remove impurities from your life so you can be conducive to GOD’s will for your life and the lives of others. To be as pure as possible, we need only to be in alignment with GOD’s will, which can be discerned by knowing GOD’s Word. The better you are aligned with GOD’s will, the more pure you become; therefore, your conductivity grows greater and greater. Those who follow GOD’s Word are better equipped to receive GOD’s directions; those who are better equipped to receive GOD’s directions are less likely to get lost.

(Ecclesiastes 10:1) –MSG
“Dead flies in perfume make it stink, and a little foolishness decomposes much wisdom.”

The bad contaminates what is good. A person desires his/her drinking water to be pure, right? Would you purchase purified water and then pour dirt in it right before you drink it? Would you put moldy bread in with fresh baked bread? Would you put your kitty cat in a coyote’s den? Good and bad don’t belong together. Good that is surrounded by bad stands a great chance of becoming bad. Picture purified water as the good in your life. Now picture just a single drop of food coloring as something that is bad. If you were to drip food coloring into purified water, that food coloring would spread and soon the water would no longer be clear. The bad contaminates the good. Did you know that GOD calls your sex life to be pure as well? Are you filling your body with contaminates? Are you filling your mind with impure thoughts? Is your house infested with mold? What impurities do you need to remove from your life today?  May the following Scriptures help guide you with your future decisions:

(Philippians 4:8) –NLT
“And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.”

(Leviticus 20:7-8) –NLT
“So set yourselves apart to be holy, for I am the Lord your God. Keep all my decrees by putting them into practice, for I am the Lord who makes you holy.”

(Ezekiel 44:23) –AMP
“The priests shall teach My people the difference between the holy and the common or profane, and cause them to distinguish between the unclean and the clean.”

(Matthew 5:28) –NIV
“But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

(Matthew 5:28) –MSG
“Your heart can be corrupted by lust even quicker than your body. Those leering looks you think nobody notices—they also corrupt.”

(John 8:34) –NLT
“Jesus replied, ‘I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave of sin.’ ”

(1Corinthians 6:18-19) –GW
Stay away from sexual sins. Other sins that people commit don’t affect their bodies the same way sexual sins do. People who sin sexually sin against their own bodies. Don’t you know that your body is a temple that belongs to the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit, whom you received from God, lives in you. You don’t belong to yourselves.”

(1Corinthians 6:16-20) –MSG
“There’s more to sex than mere skin on skin. Sex is as much spiritual mystery as physical fact. As written in Scripture, “The two become one.” Since we want to become spiritually one with the Master, we must not pursue the kind of sex that avoids commitment and intimacy, leaving us more lonely than ever—the kind of sex that can never “become one.” There is a sense in which sexual sins are different from all others. In sexual sin we violate the sacredness of our own bodies, these bodies that were made for God-given and God-modeled love, for “becoming one” with another. Or didn’t you realize that your body is a sacred place, the place of the Holy Spirit? Don’t you see that you can’t live however you please, squandering what God paid such a high price for? The physical part of you is not some piece of property belonging to the spiritual part of you. God owns the whole works. So let people see God in and through your body.”

(1Thessalonians 4:3-7) –GW
“It is God’s will that you keep away from sexual sin as a mark of your devotion to him. Each of you should know that finding a husband or wife for yourself is to be done in a holy and honorable way, not in the passionate, lustful way of people who don’t know God. No one should take advantage of or exploit other believers that way. The Lord is the one who punishes people for all these things. We’ve already told you and warned you about this. God didn’t call us to be sexually immoral but to be holy.”

(2Corinthians 6:14-16) –GW
“Stop forming inappropriate relationships with unbelievers. Can right and wrong be partners? Can light have anything in common with darkness? Can Christ agree with the devil? Can a believer share life with an unbeliever? Can God’s temple contain false gods? Clearly, we are the temple of the living God. As God said, ‘I will live and walk among them. I will be their God, and they will be my people.’ ” —[Leviticus 26:12; Jeremiah 32:38; Ezekiel 37:27]

(2Timothy 2:21) –NLT
“If you keep yourself pure, you will be a special utensil for honorable use. Your life will be clean, and you will be ready for the Master to use you for every good work.”

(Matthew 15:11) –NLT
“It’s not what goes into your mouth that defiles you; you are defiled by the words that come out of your mouth.”

(Proverbs 20:1) –GW
“Wine makes people mock, liquor makes them noisy, and everyone under their influence is unwise.”

(Proverbs 31:4) –NLT
“It is not for kings, O Lemuel, to guzzle wine. Rulers should not crave alcohol.”

(Hosea 4:11) –ERV
“Sexual sins, strong drink, and new wine ruin a person’s ability to think straight.”

(Micah 2:11) –CEV
“The only prophet you want is a liar who will say, ‘Drink and get drunk!’ ”

(Habakkuk 2:15) –AMP
“Woe to him who gives his neighbors drink, who pours out your bottle to them and adds to it your poisonous and blighting wrath and also makes them drunk, that you may look on their stripped condition and pour out foul shame [on their glory]!”

(Amos 2:12) –NLT
“But you caused the Nazirites to sin by making them drink wine, and you commanded the prophets, ‘Shut up!’”

In Genesis 9:20-25, Noah lost control and made a big mistake due to alcohol.

In Genesis 19:31-36, Lot was deceived and impregnated his  own daughters because he was drunk and unable to think clearly.

(Numbers 6:2-3) –NLT
“If any of the people, either men or women, take the special vow of a Nazirite, setting themselves apart to the Lord in a special way, they must give up wine and other alcoholic drinks.”

(Luke 1:14-16) –GW
“He [John the Baptist] will be your pride and joy, and many people will be glad that he was born. As far as the Lord is concerned, he will be a great man. He will never drink wine or any other liquor. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born. He will bring many people in Israel back to the Lord their God.”

(Judges 13:3-4) –GW
“The Messenger of the Lord appeared to her [Manoah] and said, ‘You’ve never been able to have a child, but now you will become pregnant and have a son [Samson]. Now you must be careful. Don’t drink any wine or liquor or eat any unclean food.’ ”

(Isaiah 28:7) –GW
“Priests and prophets stagger from wine and wobble from too much liquor. They stagger from too much liquor and become confused from too much wine. They wobble because of their liquor. They stagger when they see visions. They swerve as they judge.”
