Identity Crisis

If you would rather read this message, I have provided the words below:

INTRODUCTION:

What do you do when you first meet someone? Let’s examine some examples from both teenage and adult perspectives:

(1)  Teen Friendship only:

  • Get his/her name?
  • Ask what he/she likes to do?
  • Find out where he/she typically hangs out?
  • Do you know any of the same people?
  • Find out what you have in common.
  • Discern who the person is and if you want that person to be in your life.

(2)  Teen Romantic interest:

  • Robot mode: Judge by appearance. Scan the subject.
  • Facial recognition: Approved. Does not need a bag over the head.
  • Body: mid-section: Approved.
  • Body: lower-section: there’s some junk in the trunk but that’s okay because I like big butts and I cannot lie—
  • We don’t even think about who they are! They could be the most attractive serial killer you’ve ever met.

(3)  Adult friendship only:  (we are worse than teens)

  • What’s your name? (I don’t really care and I probably won’t remember it)
  • What do you do for a living? (Do I have a better career than you? Do I make more money than you? Am I better than you?)

(4)  Adult romantic interest:

  • Adults basically do the same thing as teens.

(5)  Is it any wonder why so many friendships last a long time — even a lifetime? Is it any wonder why so many romantic relationships end in heartache, pain, and divorce?

  • When seeking friendships, we typically seek to find who the person is – we seek to discover that person’s identity.
  • When seeking romantic relationships, we typically seek to find what is physically attractive to look at and then try to force that person to become the best friend we’re hoping to find.

SCRIPTURE READING:

“When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say that the Son of Man is?’ ‘Well,’ they replied, ‘some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say Jeremiah or one of the other prophets.’ Then he asked them, ‘But who do you say I am?’ Simon Peter answered, ‘You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.’ Jesus replied, ‘You are blessed, Simon son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being.’ ”
(Matthew 16:13-17) -NLT

GAMESHOW:  GUESS WHO

How To Play:

Get out a piece of paper and a writing utensil. Write numbers 1-7, going down. I am going to describe to you seven different people, one at a time. As I am describing each person to you, I want you to try to imagine what each person looks like. First, imagine whether the person is male or female. Write it down — male or female. After you assume the gender of the person, I want you to imagine the age, height, and even the weight of the person. I want you to also imagine if the person has a lot of facial hair or if the person is clean shaven. Imagine the person’s skin tone, hair color and even the eye color. Does the person have freckles? Wrinkles? Does the person have scars? What clothing would the person be wearing? Be as specific as possible in your guess as to who this person is. If you know who the person is, simply write the name of the person.

IDENTITY #1

Description:

This person had a sister and a brother who both died at an early age. Not too much longer after the death of both siblings, this person’s mother also died. This person eventually became a part-owner of a store, but the business failed. This person studied law. This person eventually fell in love; however, this person’s love interest also eventually died. With only two saddlebags to hold all of this person’s possessions, this person moved to a new city to live in at the age of 28. This person eventually got into politics. This person ran for president year after year and got rejected year after year; however, this person finally got elected as the president of the United States at the age of 52.

Identity Revealed:

It was only after years of rejection and ‘failure’ that this man succeeded. That man was Abraham Lincoln.

IDENTITY #2

Description:

This person was born in 1929. This person lived in a confined space with many other people and felt as if the atmosphere was suffocating at times. At the age of only 15, this person got arrested. At the young age of 16, this person died from typhoid fever; in addition, all family members with the exception of the father ended up dying. But the father found this person’s diary and this diary became famous.

Identity Revealed:

The young girl named Anne Frank eventually went on to inspire millions of people despite the fact that she wasn’t even alive here on Earth. Her father — the only remaining family member — found Anne’s diary, was amazed by her maturity and character and then he got it published into a book. Anne provided wonderful insight into a dark moment of history inundated with Nazis and also showed the world that maturity can be found in youth and a hero can look like a female.

{She was 16! You are not too young to make a difference!}

IDENTITY #3

Description:

This person was born in Australia. As a child, this person struggled mentally, emotionally, and even physically. At one point, this person considered suicide. At the age of 21, this person graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce and with a double major in accountancy and financial planning. This person is now a Christian evangelist and motivational speaker.

Identity Revealed:

This person is Nick Vujicic; he was born with tetra-amelia syndrome, a rare disorder characterized by the absence of all four limbs. Nick has encouraged, motivated and inspired millions of people simply because he overcame and never quit. Though he lives a life without limbs, his heart propels him in the direction he needs to go.

IDENTITY #4

Description:

This person was one of eight siblings and was also the runt of the litter. Being the smallest, this person was sent to watch over sheep rather than being in war or hunting. On one occasion, a special visitor came to the father and desired to choose one of the siblings for a special task and rare position. But on this occasion, this person was excluded from the other siblings and wasn’t even presented as a choice to the special visitor. Neither the father nor the siblings thought very much of this person.

Identity Revealed:

This person is the great David of the Bible. Even Samuel — a prophet — admitted he wanted to choose David’s brother over David. But GOD’s response in 1Samuel 16:6-7 tells us that GOD does not look at appearance, but looks at the heart.

IDENTITY #5

Description:

This person dressed with clothing that proclaims importance and that is because this person possesses an important title or position. This person was one of the few who comprised the ruling class in the area. This person was a successful person by human standards. However, this person eventually caused an innocent and much loved man to receive a death sentence and was later despised because of it.

Identity Revealed:

This person is one of the many Pharisees whom Jesus opposed and often rebuked. These are the people who seemed like they had it all together and were doing everything right! Though the Pharisees had the appearance of importance and right character, they lacked heart. Examine the words of Jesus regarding the Pharisees:

“Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, ‘The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat, so do and observe whatever they tell you, but not the works they do. For they preach, but do not practice. They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger. They do all their deeds to be seen by others…. Woe to you, blind guides…. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness. So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness…. You serpents, you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to hell?”
(Matthew 23:1-5, 16, 27-28, 33) -ESV

IDENTITY #6

Description:

This person grew up agnostic and eventually became a performer in Hollywood for the entertainment industry and had been in dozens of television shows. This person became a nihilistic atheist whose only concern was experiencing fun. Sadly, this person’s nihilism brought this person to write out a suicide letter, considering everything in life to be worthless and meaningless — even life itself. After failing to commit suicide, this person eventually left the entertainment industry and ended up receiving unemployment checks until working such jobs as a janitor for an elementary school and as a groundskeeper for an apartment community. By the world’s standards, this person became a failure and an insignificant and invisible nobody.

Identity Revealed:

This person is me (Trenton Gill). Jesus saved me from myself. To see my entire testimony, please see my other article, “My Testimony: from Agnosticism, to Atheism, to Christianity“.

IDENTITY #7

Description:

As a baby, this person was born in a dirty place where animals typically go to eat. There never seemed to be anything remarkable about this person; in fact, this person worked an ordinary job as a typical carpenter. When this person was around 30 years of age, this person went above and beyond to love people. And yet despite of this person’s great love, this person was condemned to a death sentence on false accusations and died a horrible death. People mocked this person as this person died.

Identity Revealed:

This person is Christ Jesus. Jesus — fully GOD — became fully human in order to save us from ourselves. By His great sacrificial love, our bloodstained sinful selves have been whitewashed and cleansed and we will be able to live in His presence for all eternity.

SUMMARY

When I described each person, did the physical appearance ever make a difference as to who they ended up becoming? Did physical appearance have anything to do with the person’s identity?

(1)  Think:

  • Did age or gender make a difference?
  • Did all of their ‘current’ jobs, tasks, labels or titles ever define who they would end up becoming?
  • Did their history determine their future?

(2)  The heart is the start and most important part:

  • From examples in this game and everyone we read about in the Bible, what matters most is the heart.

CONCLUSION: GAME’S OVER; NOW WHAT? REAL LIFE STARTS.

(1)  Examine yourself:

  • If I were to write a description about you and share it with someone else, would that person picture you?
  • Is the current description of you the person you want to be in the future?
  • What do you care about most in life?
  • What are your short-term and long-term goals?
  • What are your dreams?
  • Who do you want to become?
  • You need to know your identity. Otherwise, people will tell you who you are and you just might believe them.

(2)  Examine others:

  • Are you judging someone by their appearance instead of looking at their heart?
  • Do you even know enough about someone to write a description about that person’s heart?
  • If you don’t know a person well enough to write a description about that person’s heart, then you don’t truly know who they are.

REAL LIFE APPLICATION

Pastor Steve Fender from Livingway Church of San Antonio, Texas once shared with me one of the most amazing testimonies I’ve ever heard. After an alter call at one of Steve’s services, a man by the name of Ernest had asked Steve to talk to him and pray with him. Eventually, Ernest confessed to being a Mexican mafia hitman and that he had killed a lot of people. Ernest asked if GOD would still accept him because of all the murders he had committed and pastor Steve told Ernest that no one is too far gone to be saved. Pastor Steve asked Ernest to lift up his hands in surrender to GOD; Ernest told Steve that he would, but only if Steve would hold his shirt down so that no one would see his gun while his arms were up. Ernest — a hitman with a loaded gun in church service — gave his life to Christ that day and eventually led many other people to Christ. One day, Ernest was shot while walking the streets. When pastor Steve arrived at the scene, Ernest was face down on the ground, already dead. In Ernest’s hand appeared to be a gun; however, it was a copy of the New Testament. The world labeled Ernest as a murderer; Ernest proclaimed himself to be a murderer at one point; however, Ernest was made new in Christ and was called to be a preacher. Ernest’s title of ‘hitman’ wasn’t his true identity. And once Ernest realized his real identity, he received his true calling and his true title. Repentance and faith bring salvation. Despite his past, Ernest was a preacher and that is how we should remember him.

CALL TO ACTION:

(1)  Perhaps you genuinely desire to have a relationship with GOD, but you are guilty of judging people by their appearances. If that’s you, repent and ask GOD to help you see people in the loving way He sees them. “GOD, remove the veil of lies from my eyes! Open my eyes to see Truth! Help me to see people as you see them!”

(2)  Perhaps you don’t judge people by their appearances and assume the worst of them, but you do distance yourself from people who seem questionable. If that’s you, ask GOD to cast out fear and to fill you with the love and courage necessary to go introduce yourself to those people. You just might introduce yourself to someone who needs love the most.

(3) Perhaps you view yourself as the person who has only been judged by his/her appearance. Is it possible that you’ve closed yourself off and have prevented people from establishing relationships with you because you’re afraid of getting hurt? If that’s you, open yourself up again and allow people to get to know who you truly are. If possible, link up with someone else and then together go introduce yourselves to someone else.

(4)  Perhaps you just found yourself here but you’re not a committed follower of Christ. If that’s you, perhaps it’s time to get to know the One who died for you. Perhaps it’s time to get to know the GOD who desires to have a relationship with the person He created. GOD created you for a purpose. If you want to discover that purpose and know more, let it be known to GOD. Seek and you will find.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit, please inundate our hearts and convict us of the truth. Please open our eyes and help us to see beyond the superficial surface and to dive deep into the depth of Truth. Open our minds and enable us to see true identity beyond the facade of the face or the build of the body. Help us to love people the way you love them. I proclaim in the name of Jesus, the person reading this will discover his/her true identity in You.

Superhero: Ability & Availability

If you would rather read this message, the words are provided below…

This is Part 7 of my Superhero series. In the introduction of this series, I provided the argument that heroes are real and then I distinguished between heroes and superheroes. I also provided a list of what defines a superhero. In Part 1, we learned that superheroes recognize the absolute standard of Good and realize that evil is a mere privation of what is good. In Part 2, we learned that superheroes recognize the absolute moral standard and realize that what is wrong can only be known by the standard of what is right. In Part 3, I defined and expounded upon love because all superheroes are full of love and are compelled to act out from love. In Part 4, I explained that superheroes desire to save people from all forms of danger and/or death and this desire comes from love. In Part 5, we learned that superheroes are solution seekers. In Part 6, we saw that solution seekers are willing to sacrifice if necessary.

In this message (Part 7), we will see that sacrificial love steps forward and offers service. But in order to do that, we must be available. If we are able, we should also be willing. Superheroes need to be able and available.

With television shows such as American Idol, The X Factor, So You Think You Can Dance, America’s Got Talent, The Voice, etc., it’s obvious that our nation is infatuated with talent and entertainment. Even when our country went through a recession back in 2008-2009, box office sales for the movie theaters still boomed. With that said, I’m going to use the entertainment industry in order to help you better understand this message.

Actors Tom Cruise and Rob Lowe were both slated to play the lead role in the classic movie, “Footloose” (1984). The casting directors were impressed with Tom Cruise because of the famous underwear dance sequence he performed in “Risky Business” (1983); however, Tom Cruise was unavailable for the part because he was filming “All the Right Moves” (1983). Rob Lowe auditioned three times and had dancing ability and the ‘neutral teen’ look that the director wanted, but he pulled his knee; consequently, the injury rendered him unavailable and prevented him from getting the part. Kevin Bacon was offered the leading role for the Stephen King movie, “Christine” (1983) at the same time that he was asked to do a screen test for “Footloose.” The producers from “Footloose” convinced Kevin Bacon that turning down a sure role in “Christine” for a part he might not even get in “Footloose” was the wiser choice by telling him that if he did get the part for “Footloose,” the role would make him an instant star. And in just 30 seconds into the screen test reading, Kevin Bacon was offered the lead role in “Footloose.” However, it was the director of “Footloose,” who only after watching “Diner” (1982), convinced the producers to go with Kevin Bacon. And Kevin Bacon almost didn’t get the part in “Diner” because he was sick on the day of his screen test reading for the role of Fenwick. But Kevin Bacon had previously decided that his character (Fenwick) would probably be half-drunk during the entire movie anyway, so he forged ahead, auditioned, and then got the part. And because of all this, there is now what Hollywood refers to as the “six degrees of Kevin Bacon”:

superhero-available-01

Here is the same information (as above), but put into a different perspective: Kevin Bacon only got the part in “Diner” because he made himself available for the audition even though he was sick. Because he made himself available and got the part in “Diner,” the director of “Footloose” saw him in “Diner” and then had reason to push Kevin Bacon to his producers; consequently, Kevin Bacon got the lead role in “Footloose.” However, the only reason Kevin Bacon got the lead role in “Footloose” was because he turned down “Christine” and made himself available for “Footloose.” However, Kevin Bacon was only chosen after Tom Cruise and Rob Lowe had both been unavailable.

Now, the only reason I chose to use this example was because Kevin Bacon played the evil villain, Sebastian Shaw, in the 2011 movie, X-Men: First Class. Kevin Bacon is now forever a part of superhero history and because of that, he is now in my book about superheroes. So, let’s use this message of ability and availability to see how it applies to our lives according to GOD’s Word:

One day as Jeroboam was leaving Jerusalem, the prophet Ahijah from Shiloh met him along the way. Ahijah was wearing a new cloak. The two of them were alone in a field, and Ahijah took hold of the new cloak he was wearing and tore it into twelve pieces. Then he said to Jeroboam, ‘Take ten of these pieces, for this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: “I am about to tear the kingdom from the hand of Solomon, and I will give ten of the tribes to you! But I will leave him one tribe for the sake of my servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel. For Solomon has abandoned me and worshiped Ashtoreth, the goddess of the Sidonians; Chemosh, the god of Moab; and Molech, the god of the Ammonites. He has not followed my ways and done what is pleasing in my sight. He has not obeyed my decrees and regulations as David his father did.”‘
(1Kings 11:29-33) -NLT

Solomon was David’s son. Solomon started out as an average man, became the wisest man (1Kings 3:5-12), but then ended up crashing and burning due to his sins. The irony is that Solomon was wise enough to foresee his downfall, but he blinded himself to Truth because he chose to set his focus on personal pleasure. Solomon’s story saddens me and not just because he was David’s son or that he had once been so wise, but because his story is like many Christians of today’s culture. So many Christians today have taken their focus off GOD’s will and have become distracted by the pleasures that our sinful society offers. Let’s examine what tripped Solomon up and how it relates to us today: GOD’s Word tells us that Solomon abandoned GOD and worshiped Ashtoreth, Chemosh, and Molech.

Ashtoreth (Astarte, Ashtarte, Ashtaroth, Ishtar, Attar):

This deity was a mother goddess linked with fertility, love, and war. This deity was associated with carved trees or nature, as being the female deity of the moon, and also associated with sexual immorality. Sex and nature. Or as the hippies claimed, “it’s love and peace, man!” But as we learned in chapter 3, sex and love are not one and the same: sex needs love to be relevant and meaningful; love does not need sex to be relevant and meaningful. Love can survive and even thrive without sex, but sex without love is pleasure without purpose. Solomon ruined his life because he allowed sex to become his love. Ashtoreth was essentially the same ‘god’ that the hippies of the 1960’s worshiped. The goal was satisfaction for self. And so many of those misguided hippies of the 1960’s ended up being the people who influenced our politics and society; consequently, many of the dangerous indoctrinations and misguided beliefs have carried over into the present day in which we live. Nowadays, worship of Ashtoreth can be compared with the people who call themselves “ecosexuals” because they essentially worship ‘Mother Nature’ and center their lives on the pleasure of sex. The scattered remains of Ashtoreth are still evident in the entertainment and advertisement industries. If you haven’t noticed, sex sells. If you haven’t noticed, the lure of lust is the rust that causes a person’s stainless steel character to corrode and crumble.

Chemosh:

According to the Moabite Stone (the Mesha Stele), Chemosh was associated with the goddess Ashteroth. This deity was [in general] of the same nature as Baal (Baal-Hadid). The word baal means “lord.” Baal was most often associated with being the god of weather, war, or fertility. So, Baal was a god who was believed to enable the earth to produce crops and people to produce children. Nowadays, our secular society who supports scientism essentially worships themselves as the only beings capable of ensuring the growth of crops and allowing/denying human fertility. The modern version of Chemosh or Baal is most likely celebrities and scientists. Many people idolize celebrities, viewing them as superhuman; many people essentially worship scientists, viewing them as our saviors.

superhero-available-04superhero-available-05

Molech (Moloch, Molek, Melek, Malik):

Children were burned to death as a sacrifice while worshiping a false god. Nowadays, Molech can be compared to Planned Parenthood and the thousands of abortions (murders) that take place every day. As of 2018, it was estimated that Americans have aborted (murdered) about 60 million babies since our sinful society demanded the ‘right’ to do so in 1973. (Click here to read my logical argument against abortion.)

Ancient Sin Is Modern Sin:

There’s nothing new about sin; Satan is subtle, evil is deliberate, and the devil’s demons haven’t changed their tactics. Even today, people are still placing their focus on false gods and idols. And if a wise man such as Solomon was able to be beguiled by physical beauty and enticed and entranced by the temptations that surrounded him, you better believe that you are susceptible to falling as well. In fact, GOD’s Word tells us that we are not exempt from falling:

“These are all warning markers—danger!—in our history books, written down so that we don’t repeat their mistakes. Our positions in the story are parallel—they at the beginning, we at the end—and we are just as capable of messing it up as they were. Don’t be so naive and self-confident. You’re not exempt. You could fall flat on your face as easily as anyone else. Forget about self-confidence; it’s useless. Cultivate God-confidence. No test or temptation that comes your way is beyond the course of what others have had to face.”
(1Corinthians 10: 11-13) -MSG

“God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.”
(1Corinthians 10:13) -NLT

“Stay alert, be in prayer, so you don’t enter the danger zone without even knowing it. Don’t be naive. Part of you is eager, ready for anything in God; but another part is as lazy as an old dog sleeping by the fire.”
(Mark 14:38) -MSG

“So be on your guard, not asleep like the others. Stay alert and be clearheaded.”
(1Thessalonians 5:6) -NLT

But referring back to 1Kings 11:29-33, Ahijah the prophet tore his cloak into 12 pieces and announced that Jeroboam was to replace Solomon as king. Even if Ahijah had not told Jeroboam what the tearing of the cloak meant, the same thing was about to happen to Solomon and to Jeroboam regardless. Most of the time, we experience only signs and symbolism in our lives without any explanations. GOD doesn’t always tell us the ‘why.’ Therefore, we need to constantly and consistently keep our focus on GOD and the ways of GOD so that we can have our eyes open, alert, and ready to see the signs that GOD gives us when they arrive in our lives. We need to pay attention, be aware of where we are and if we’re living right before GOD. We need to keep ourselves in check at all times. Indeed — check yourself before you wreck yourself! We need to constantly self-examine ourselves to ensure we’re living the right way.

“But I have taken you in hand. Rule to your heart’s content! You are to be the king of Israel. If you listen to what I tell you and live the way I show you and do what pleases me, following directions and obeying orders as my servant David did, I’ll stick with you no matter what. I’ll build you a kingdom as solid as the one I built for David. Israel will be yours!”
(1Kings 11: 37-39) -MSG

GOD declared a promise to Jeroboam while pouring out His heart and love. GOD chose Jeroboam. However, let’s be honest — GOD only chooses and works with whomever is available. Why? Because we have the great gift of free will. And if someone isn’t willing, that person would not be available. This is why GOD always promises things, but inserts special stipulations into the contract agreement. GOD can only follow through with the promise or the miracle if we do our part. This is the reason why so many people have come and gone as leaders. If there is only one choice to work with, GOD will use that person until someone better is available to use, and so on and so forth. If we are chosen as someone of great significance, as an anointed one, it’s important that we always do our best and try to continually improve. There will always be a chance that someone coming out of the shop will be better than you. A lot of people will make themselves available yet they lack ability. A lot of people have ability, but who will make themselves available? There will always be a chance that you will injure your knee at the ‘audition’ and render yourself unavailable to be chosen for the part. We don’t want to be replaced by someone because we didn’t try our best. It would be even worse if GOD replaced us with inanimate and inarticulate items such as a blue cord. We need to show up to the ‘audition’ even if we don’t feel 100%! However, if we do get replaced by someone when we do try our best, then it was simply for the best and we need to move on. But we must try our best. However, to do that we must first make ourselves available. Ability is useless without availability; if you have the ability to act yet are unavailable to act, you won’t act and thus your ability is useless.

Ponder on this: there are more chances for your replacement the higher you get up the ladder. Look at it this way: if your job is to crawl into pipes/tunnels and clean out the sewage and waste that clogged the pipes/tunnels, how many people do you think will be after your job? Not many. But if you are a celebrity with fame and fortune, how many people would want your job then? Almost everyone. The better the position you are placed in, the greater expectation of your work, and the greater the risk of being replaced if you do not meet the expectation.

“Much will be required of everyone who has been given much. And even more will be expected of the one who has been entrusted with more.”
(Luke 12:48) -HCSB

“But then Jeroboam thought, ‘It won’t be long before the kingdom is reunited under David. As soon as these people resume worship at The Temple of God in Jerusalem, they’ll start thinking of Rehoboam king of Judah as their ruler. They’ll then kill me and go back to King Rehoboam.’ So the king came up with a plan: He made two golden calves. Then he announced, ‘It’s too much trouble for you to go to Jerusalem to worship. Look at these—the gods who brought you out of Egypt!’ He put one calf in Bethel; the other he placed in Dan. This was blatant sin. Think of it—people traveling all the way to Dan to worship a calf!”
(1Kings 12:26-30) -MSG

Jeroboam replaced Solomon as king and then wrecked himself as soon as he started because he did not check himself. Jeroboam didn’t check his motives or align himself with GOD’s Word — his focus was on himself instead of doing GOD’s will. That’s why GOD needs to always be first. If we do GOD’s will, then we will be blessed in the process.

“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.”
(Matthew 6:33) -NLT

Unfortunately for GOD and everyone under Jeroboam’s rule, Jeroboam was the man that GOD had to work with for the time being. Can you believe that?! That guy was the best man for the job as king even though he was not suited for the position at all! (I can believe it. I can think of at least a couple presidents in our American history who weren’t suited to be president.) But out of all people who made themselves available, GOD selected Jeroboam because he was the closest thing to a leader who was available. That would be unbelievable if only it didn’t match so many other descriptions of world leaders throughout our history; Jeroboam’s story matches the accuracy of what we already know to be true throughout world history. That means that the entire lot of people GOD had to choose from were just a bunch of lukewarm, fence-sitting, selfish sinners or worse. They lost their edge. Their fire went out.

“So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.”
(Revelation 3:16) -ESV

In Revelation 3, the church of Laodicea receives no praise from the Lord. GOD states that because they are neither hot nor cold and merely lukewarm, GOD is going to spit them out of His mouth. The people claimed that they needed nothing because they were wealthy, but GOD called them wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, naked, and shameful (Revelation 3:17-18). GOD proclaims His love, advises they accept His discipline, and admonishes them to repent. The insipid are intolerable; their indecisiveness leads to indigestion. Indifference leads to idleness. Fence-sitting, couch-potato, comfort-Christianity receives no praise (Hebrews 10:38; 12:4-13; Proverbs 3:11-12)! In Revelation 3:20, Jesus tells us that He stands at the door and knocks, simply waiting for someone to respond and allow Him in. And when that person allows Jesus within, He will have dinner with that person. Why is this important? In Mark 2:15-17, we see that this is how Levi — a tax collector — became Matthew, the disciple. Once we allow Jesus within and we fellowship with Him, hearing His Word in itself would be the meal we would be eating; consequently, being filled with the Bread of Life, life would exude out of our very pores and we would be on fire for Christ, thus incapable of being lukewarm. This letter to the church of Laodicea concludes with a promise to the victor that he/she will have the right to sit with Him on His throne. This promise is to say that we will be part of the family and will share in His glory.

I don’t know about you, but both the stories of Jeroboam and the church of Laodicea motivates me to act righteously. If I’m not chosen as someone of great significance, that means that there must be someone out there who is a better person than I am and that he/she was chosen for the job. GOD seeks ability, but works with who is available; therefore, we need to make ourselves available!

Are you available? Have you allowed your heart to be available to GOD? Once you make yourself available, you then put yourself in the running. If you don’t get chosen for a specific job, don’t get discouraged — that just means there is someone better suited for that particular job. No big deal. That doesn’t mean that you should drop out of the running though! You are perfect for a particular job, it’s just a matter of patience to discover where GOD needs you to be. GOD knows what you are best at, what you’re good at, what you’re alright at, and even what you’re bad at. GOD wants to use the gifts, talents, and abilities that He gave to you for how they would be used in the best way. Therefore, make yourself available. You cannot go to auditions if you don’t make yourself available for the auditions. You cannot get the part if you don’t audition. And when you audition, you should not give a halfhearted audition — you should put forth 100% effort and do your best while auditioning even if you don’t feel 100%. Every single new ‘audition’ is a new opportunity for you to prove that you are the right one to be chosen.

There are many roles in acting just like there are many roles that we Christians play in the huge ‘movie’ called Life. GOD is the writer, producer, director, script supervisor, executive producer, camera operator, the sound guy, the editor, etc… GOD is also the casting director. GOD created this ‘movie’ called Life; in addition, He knows who is best suited for what role. We need to place our trust in GOD (Proverbs 3:5-6). GOD places His trust in us just as a director places his/her trust in an actor/actress. It’s a mutual trust. The movie can’t be great without the actors — and the Director knows that. GOD still needs ‘actors’ and ‘actresses’ to fill the roles in Life. Are you available? Don’t concern yourself about when you will get chosen — it will happen. Patience… GOD has a specific role that He wants you to play, but there is a specific time in which He needs you to fill that role. Practice your ability, but be available always. Always go to your ‘auditions.’ Always try your best. Never get discouraged. Understand that it’s just a matter of time. And in the meantime, constantly try to better yourself as a person. There’s always room for improvement.

Jeroboam got cast as the part of the king, but I guarantee you that the audience was unhappy with the selection and the movie bombed. But Jeroboam got the part because he was the best one for the role who was also available to be used as that role. There were better men than Jeroboam (no doubt), but perhaps they were too far away in the world to be cast as the king for that particular place. Or perhaps those better men were already playing a role in GOD’s movie somewhere else. GOD knew that the movie wasn’t great with Jeroboam as king, but GOD had someone else in mind for the role of King, and His name was Jesus. That’s part of the storyline in this movie we call Life – GOD allowed bad kings so that we would appreciate the Good King. But GOD’s planning and timing had to be precise. So, GOD worked with who was available for the time being. Are you available? Let’s learn a lesson from the prophet Isaiah on how we should respond in life:

Then I said, ‘It’s all over! I am doomed, for I am a sinful man. I have filthy lips, and I live among a people with filthy lips. Yet I have seen the King, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.’ Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a burning coal he had taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. He touched my lips with it and said, ‘See, this coal has touched your lips. Now your guilt is removed, and your sins are forgiven.’ Then I heard the Lord asking, ‘Whom should I send as a messenger to this people? Who will go for us?’ I said, ‘Here I am. Send me.’ ”
(Isaiah 6:5-8) -NLT

Isaiah’s humility helped him realize he was a sinful man. Isaiah’s recognition of his sinful nature enabled him to repent of his sins and receive forgiveness. Isaiah’s willingness to do GOD’s will made him available to be chosen for anointed and appointed ability.

I challenge you to make yourself available! Be the most righteous person you can possibly be, be patient, and be persistent. GOD has a plan for you. To insure your availability, ensure that you are living in alignment with GOD’s Word. Live as righteous as possible. What happens when the right people aren’t available? GOD has to choose a Jeroboam or a blue cord. Be available. Don’t make GOD choose a Jeroboam because you weren’t available. Are you available? Can GOD depend on you to be chosen as the superhero who feeds that homeless person on the street? Or are you going to be in the strip club thereby rendering yourself unavailable? Can GOD depend on you to be chosen as the superhero who tells the truth when everyone else is too afraid to speak up? Or are you going to be hiding your head in the sand thereby rendering yourself unavailable? Can GOD depend on you to be chosen as the superhero to speak a miracle over someone’s life and help heal someone? Or are you going to be intoxicated at a party thereby rendering yourself unavailable? If you choose to love, desire to do GOD’s will, seek solutions, and are willing to sacrifice, you have the ability. But are you available? And will you help others be ready and available for when Christ returns?

“Always be ready! You don’t know when the Son of Man will come.”
(Matthew 24:44) -CEV

If you’re not ready and available when GOD calls you, how are you going to help others be ready and available when Christ comes? If you are able, you should also be willing. Be able. Be available.

From Caveman To Conqueror

FROM CAVEMAN TO CONQUEROR

What’s up everybody! My name’s Trenton. I’m going to share a little bit about myself, but before I do that, I want to show you a clip from a television show. Does anybody like the television show Grey’s Anatomy? Real quick, watch this clip and then I’ll continue…

[Clip from Grey’s Anatomy]

Ew! That guy was bloody! Bloody good, right?! I’m not sure if you noticed or not, but that scrawny pale dead guy was me! Yes! I died, I came back, I’m here, it’s strange — I know! I used to be an actor in Hollywood. I’ve been in over 20 television shows, a couple movies and a few commercials. (see my acting resume here!)

That scene where I got zipped up in the body bag was not fun to film. The cast and crew actually played a practical joke on me and left me in the body bag even after they had finished filming.

That scene of me being inside the body bag is actually a very fitting description of what my life was like back then. By the world’s standards, I had made it. I had made money from acting jobs and I had accomplished what many people can never say they’ve done. But there was one problem: I was an atheist and I didn’t believe in GOD. I also suffered from severe depression, thoughts of suicide, and felt dead inside even though I was very much alive.

I was alive while I had been filming that scene, but I was trapped in darkness. I knew that life was going on all around me, but I wasn’t able to comprehend the truth of what was going on. All I knew was darkness.

Now imagine this: when the joke was over and they unzipped the body bag, I was not only able to see, but I was able to comprehend the truth of what I saw.

I want to share a message with you about what it’s like to come out of the darkness and into the Light of Truth.

“I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness.”
(John 12:46) -ESV

[Prayer]

(If you have a Bible, turn to 1Samuel 22 and leave it open there.)

The people of Israel demanded that they receive a king like other nations had. GOD warned them against it, but they demanded it anyway. GOD gave them what they wanted. And the type of king they wanted was a guy named Saul. But Saul wasn’t a good king. Eventually, GOD had Samuel the prophet go anoint David as the new future king to replace Saul. Instead of having a king who reflected the people’s desires, GOD chose a man after His own heart. (Tag! You’re it!)

When David got anointed, the Holy Spirit filled David and left Saul. Saul had darkness within him, was bitter, envious, paranoid, etc. A lot of things happened after that, but David ended up working in the palace under Saul. So, David wasn’t king yet, but he was going to be. To make a long story shorter, Saul kept trying to kill David until David went on the run. And that’s where we are at in this story.

In 1Samuel 22, it is written that David escaped and hid in the cave of Adullam. Everything seemed to be working against David. Saul wanted to kill him and he wasn’t even safe in his own home — Saul sent thugs to David’s house to try to kill him. So, David ran somewhere else. But that didn’t work either — he had more enemies there than where he came from. Let me ask you this: Do you run from your problems, going from this to that, here to there?

David eventually escaped and hid in a cave. How many times in life do we all ‘escape’ and hide in a ‘cave’? You may not escape to a literal cave, but perhaps you escape to your bedroom or a bathroom. Maybe you don’t have a physical location where you can go to feel safe, but you shut your mind down and you hide within yourself. Where is your cave? Why do you go there? When you get discouraged? Distressed? Depressed? Deflated? Defeated? When you don’t see the results you wanted? When people are talking bad about you? When you see your parents fighting? When you feel like a failure? Some people even go to the extremes and hide in the caves of alcohol, drugs, or sexual relations outside of marriage because they think they’re safe there. I hope and pray that’s not you, but if it is, I have Good News to share with you.

Yeah — David found himself in the cave, but while David was in the cave, he did something that would forever change his seemingly hopeless situation — he wrote Psalm 34! (I want you to find in your Bible where 1Samuel 21 ends and 1Samuel 22 begins and write, “Psalm 34” between them.) David was being hunted like wild game. Meanwhile, he was hiding in a cave, praising GOD in the darkness of the den and declaring deliverance from all his fears! The faith of David! And why not? Look at the faithfulness of GOD! Listen — GOD has a plan! When we call out to GOD in loving trust and praise like David did, we will find that GOD will find us in whatever bad situation we’re in and use it to take us to where He wants us to go.

Psalm 34 — like many other psalms — is an excellent example of trusting in the Lord. In Psalm 34:8, David said: Taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the person who takes refuge in GOD! He was basically saying, “Try it for yourself — you’re going to like it! You’re going to love it!”

David was down, but he was not out! It was there in the darkness of that den that the light of the Lord shined on David! Why? David had placed his focus on the Lord!

“You, Lord, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light.”
(Psalm 18:28)-NIV

His physical body may have been in the darkness of that cave, but his thoughts were on the Lord and His ways! David invited the light of the Lord to come into the cave so that he would not cave into temptation to collapse in his current situation. Where the Light is, darkness simply cannot be!

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.”
(John 1:5)-NLT

Are you complaining about your current cave while dying in your darkness? Or are you inviting the Lord into your situation so He can bring light to your life? With the Lord leading the way as the Lamp who guides our path, we will walk out of the darkness and into the Light. And that’s exactly what David does!

In 1Samuel 22:1-2, it is written that first, his family found out he was there and came to him. But then all the outcasts of society joined him. They were broke, busted, and disgusted. They owed people money, they were filled with stress, anxiety, and worry, felt like they didn’t fit in or belong anywhere, and people always talked about them behind their backs. These were people who experienced loss and weren’t happy about the way life was going. And If we’re all honest with ourselves, we will be able to admit that maybe we’re kinda like David and all the outcasts who joined him in the cave. Because it’s human nature that when life doesn’t go our way, we often run to the cave. We run to whatever feels good. We hide because we don’t want to face our problems.

Hide and seek is the worst when someone hides with you in your spot. David was trying to hide, and hundreds of people hide with them. And of course you’ll have that one dodo brain who will have half his body sticking out, yet he thinks he’s hidden because he covered his head. Meanwhile, his body that’s sticking out is basically shouting, “Hey Saul! We’re over here! You can come kill us! Me and every single person hiding in this same spot!” (You’re blowing my cover! Get your own spot!) But that’s not what David thought. David welcomed them.

In 1Samuel 22:5, Gad the prophet delivered a word from GOD to David and told him to leave that cave and go into the land of Judah. David was obedient to GOD, acting on what he heard, which showed him to be faithful. Though David was surrounded by evildoers who served Saul and Satan, he had complete confidence in the Lord’s love and faithfulness. Though David mentions his problems, his focus is on his relationship with GOD. David basically says, “I’m too blessed to be stressed! Ain’t nobody got time for stress and worry! Ain’t nobody want to live in this dank dark depressing cave anyway! So why not leave?! It’s time to get up on out of here! I will leave this cave!”

That’s obedience! When you say, “Yes, Lord! Yes!” and you actually act on what you hear. David was obedient and left the cave. Had David stayed in the cave of Adullam, GOD would not have been with him and he would have died in his darkness because Saul was on the way.

“I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness.”
(John 12:46) -ESV

We may find ourselves in darkness — it happens sometimes. But we must walk with the Lord if we are to live in the light! GOD is on the move! We need to go on the move with Him!

That’s why it says in Psalm 23, “Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death…”  — No, this ain’t gangsta’s paradise. We don’t take a look at life and realize there’s none left.

“Even in the unending shadows of death’s darkness, I am not overcome by fear. Because You are with me in those dark moments, near with Your protection and guidance, I am comforted.
(Psalm 23:4)-Voice

We are to look at life and realize that GOD has so much more in store! But the key is that you have to be traveling with the Lord. The sheep travel with the Shepherd! And David left the cave to walk with GOD. And guess what happened — everyone else followed David. Why? They saw something in David they wanted. David wrote psalms while in the cave, praised GOD while in the cave, and kept his focus on his relationship with the Lord. David had been speaking life into those outcasts the entire time they were in the cave. Those who were lost found everything they needed through David and in the Lord. And guess what — David’s ragtag motley crew bunch of nobodies eventually forms the core of his military leadership after he becomes king of Israel (2Samuel 23:8~)!

Linda, listen!

Pay attention! Just for clarification: the cave is not the final destination; it’s not where we find ultimate salvation. The cave is a rest stop location during migration. How many people experience frustration because they give into the temptation to lay foundation in the depths of darkness where death destroys creation? Dwell in the darkness? That’s abomination! Don’t accept that invitation! Satan will lie and say it’s acceptable to stay; it’s your home, your life, you don’t need authorization. But after the presentation, if you sign on the dotted line, Satan the salesman becomes your boss and affiliation because you never took into consideration the contradiction of the special stipulations that states your soul is now available for confiscation and condemnation. The decision for sinful cohabitation is a deadly combination. Without hesitation, the boss becomes abuser and you live under constant accusation, intimidation, manipulation, and dehumanization. But it was your negotiation created the situation for suffocation and termination. But GOD’s Word is full of truthful information; some can be difficult to understand and requires further explanation. I’ll save you some aggravation; I’ll provide the translation: (And yeah — go ahead and write down the quotation, unless you’re good at memorization.) Are you ready for the translation? The cave ain’t yo crib, casa, cabin, or cottage! The cave is not the central campground! We should never make the hideout our home!

David’s army grew from a few wimps and knuckleheads to 400 in number, and then to 600, and then David was eventually crowned king of Judah and then all of Israel. But in 2Samuel 23, we find out that David had 37 best of the best warriors, but considered three of them the greatest. (You can be the greatest, you can be the best — these guys were king kongs banging on their chests!)

And the three had been with David since the cave of Adullam! These are the same guys who had once been on the run and now they’re running people out! They went from wimps to warriors! These guys are what legends are made of! These were the guys who were once broke, busted, and disgusted! Everywhere they went, people told them, “You dusty, you musty, you crusty! Ew!) And now they’re taking territory, getting paid! (Standing in the hall of fame! And the world’s gonna know your name!) “Go ahead and talk about me in the Bible because I’m living right. It’s every day bro!” Bu why? the change? Imagine Dragons:
(First things first, I’ma say all the words inside my head, I’m fired up and tired of the way that things have been – oh – the way that things have been – oh)

Josheb-basshebeth took out 800 men in a single battle setting using only a spear. This guy had once been on the run, and now he’s immovable. He said, “C’mon, I will cut you foo!” He went from running and hiding to hunting and gathering! He went from hiding behind David in the cave (“Yo, where they at?”) to standing in front of David on the battlefield (“Yo, where they at?!”)

Eleazar got stranded when other soldiers ran away during battle. But he stood his ground and struck the enemies down one after another until his hand was weary and locked onto his sword handle. He gripped that mug so tight that his hand just locked in place and refused to let go. He said, “I ain’t scurred! I’ve been running away from my problems for too long! I’m done running! I’m done caving in to evil! I’m never going back to the cave of darkness! I’d rather die living in the light than merely existing in the darkness! David showed me that our GOD is greater! And I’m experiencing that for myself! That’s the truth!”

Shaman — Like Eleazar, he also stood his ground when other soldiers ran away during battle and he defended an area by himself.

So why the change? Why not?! Some people have been hiding in the cave of darkness for too long! GOD is on the move! It’s time to come out of the darkness and into the light.

Austin Riesen, professor of psychology, did research into how early visual experience, or the lack of it, affects vision. He raised infant chimpanzees in complete darkness. After about two years, the animals were tested in light conditions and were found to be visually blind though not organically blind. In other words, they could see but could not comprehend. They had lived in the darkness for too long and didn’t know what to do in real life where the light exists. It was only after living in the light-filled condition for a while that they were finally able to distinguish between harmful or not harmful, friend or foe. Likewise, David’s men didn’t automatically become warriors and righteous men after coming out of the darkness and into the light. They had to adjust to the light, change the way they lived, let go of old harmful habits, pick up and learn new good and healthy habits.

In this study, the younger the animal, the greater the loss of vision altogether. The visual cortex in the brain fails to develop properly in the absence of a visual input or stimulation. What does that mean? The longer you live in the darkness, the more you become accustomed to living a life of darkness. And then you won’t be able to function in the real world where the lights exists.

When you come out of a movie theater in the middle of the day, the light is uncomfortable and you can’t see at first. It takes time to adjust. And that’s not even two hours watching a movie — that’s not even in complete darkness.

All studies have confirmed that the early experience of the environment contributes to perceptual competence in adulthood. What that means is that your adult life is being determined by the decisions you’re making right now. Everything you do or do not do is extremely important. Your childhood and teenage years is your development stage. If you grow up in the darkness, it is likely that you will be blind as an adult. And please understand I’m talking about your spiritual health. It is possible to see but not comprehend. As an adult, you’ll be a darkness dweller, creeping and crawling around in the dark like cave creatures do, simply living out the ways of the world because that’s what society will tell you to do.

I’m not here to condemn you if you happen to be in a cave right now. But I am here to tell you — like the prophet told David — do not remain in the cave. The only reason why David went into the cave was to seek the Lord. Do you know what that’s called when you go into a cave to seek the Lord? A prayer closest! A prayer room! You need to turn that cave of darkness into a prayer room full of Light. David went into the cave seeking the Lord and then came out of the cave walking with the Lord.

Bruce Wayne ran into a cave, but it was so that he could become Batman, leave the cave, and go out and help people, rescue them, and save them. Likewise, Jesus calls us out of the darkness and into the light so we can go out and help, love, and serve people, and lead them to the One who can actually save them! Jesus is the Light that casts out the darkness of the cave so that it may be our prayer room full of light!

There was about 400 outcasts and David became commander over them. He was a leader of losers! The rejects! Sound familiar? That’s what Jesus did in His ministry (blind, lame, poor, sinners, etc.). And BTW, Jesus went into a cave too; some call it a tomb. But guess what — He came out of the cave! There’s only darkness and death in the cave, but death couldn’t hold Jesus down because He had the crown! He conquered the cave; He conquered the grave!

Romans 8:35-39 says that nothing can separate us from the love of Christ. We are more than conquerors in Christ!

  • What is your cave? Where do you run to when problems come your way?
  • Are you currently in the darkness of the cave and want to come out?
  • Do you want to know how to make your cave of darkness into a prayer room full of light, love and laughter?
  • Do you know someone who is in the darkness you need to help out?

May the church be the cave you run into to seek the Lord. And every time you leave church you walk with the Lord. Now, some of you may feel like you don’t need church. By all means, if you’re perfect I suppose you don’t need church. Because the church is not a holier-than-thou social club for super spiritual saints; rather, it’s a hospital for sinners and place where imperfect people can seek a better life and improvement. We’re all growing together here! This is the cave we come to so that we can be challenged and so we can grow.

Look around you. How many wimps do you see? Some of you might see some wimps; some of you might even feel like wimps. But when I look at you, all I see are future warriors in Christ. I’m going to speak life into you and show you that GOD is greater. And when you go out into the spiritual battlefield we call life, your hand is going to lock onto the handle of that double-edged Sword, which is the Word of GOD, and you won’t let go!

First, I want to speak to those of you who are already believers. Maybe you’re already a believer and you’ve been hiding out in the darkness of the cave. But there’s only two types of believers who hide in the darkness of the cave. Either you’re the believer seeking the Lord and you’re at a rest stop location or you’re the believer trying to hide certain sinful actions from GOD because it’s what you want to do. And you’ve somehow convinced yourself that if you do it in the secrecy of the dark that it’s somehow acceptable.

“ ‘Can anyone hide from me in a secret place? Am I not everywhere in all the heavens and earth?’ says the Lord.”
(Jeremiah 23:24) -NLT

“For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.”
(Ecclesiastes 12:14) -NIV

(1) If you’re the believer who is in the darkness because you’ve been trying to hide certain sinful actions, I’m not trying to beat you up — I want to encourage you to come back to Christ. May this be your moment to repent and come out of that cave and join the rest of your committed comrades in the light and come together in the fight.

(2) If you’re the seeker, I just want to encourage you and let you know that you came to the right place — because this is a prayer room full of Light! Keep doing what you’re doing! Keep seeking the Lord so that we may continue to walk with the Lord!

(3) Maybe you’re not a follower of Christ — you’re not a believer — but you happen to be here right now. Do you think it’s a coincidence that I traveled through different states to come here and give you the message that you should not remain in the cave anymore? Maybe the Holy Spirit spoke into your heart and you feel like you finally see some light in the darkness of your cave. If that’s you, I want to invite you into a personal relationship with Jesus. This is not some self-help seminar or inspirational feel-good-about-yourself pep talk. Jesus is is real; He is there; He is aware; He does care. He sacrificed Himself for us on our behalf to save us from ourselves. That’s how much He loves you! And I promise you that in seeking the Lord, you will walk out of the darkness and into the light and you will be more than a conquerer in Christ!

(All eyes on me…)

Your eyes were closed for a little while and then you opened them and you saw. Let that be symbolic for your spiritual walk with Christ.

Whether this is your first time making a commitment to Christ, or you’re repenting and coming back to Christ, or you’re simply making a declaration to advance forward with Christ, I want to invite every single one of you to participate in something if you raised a hand. Even if you didn’t raise your hand but you know in your heart you should have. I want you all to stand to your feet. (Not yet!) And I’m asking you to do this for two reasons: [1] It takes effort to leave your old ways behind and to walk with Christ. The physical action of standing up takes effort. This is more so that you can show yourself that you’re not only willing to do this, but that you’re able. You can rise up! You can take a stand! [2] I want you to see just how many people around you are on your team. (Okay, now!) On the count of three, if you had raised your hand or knew you should have, stand up. 1,2,3!

Now look around at each other. You’re looking at warriors in Christ. You might want to get to know every single one of them because they are the ones who are going to have your back in the spiritual battle. But also look around and be sure to take notice of anyone not standing up.

Extra: If you see someone sitting down, I want you to love them, encourage them, motivate them, and inspire them! They are not outcasts because they’re not standing up with you! You better invite them in just like David did. And how many people not in this room are out there in the world who feel isolated, alone, and rejected? How many can you love and invite in? How many people feel dead inside yet are very much alive? YOU could be the one to unzip the body bag so someone can come out of the darkness and into the light!

FOLLOW-UP QUESTIONS:

But why am I a Christian? To find out, read my other article: “Why I Am A Christian

My Testimony: from Agnosticism, to Atheism, to Christianity

If you would rather read this message, the words are provided below…

Who am I? Does it matter who I am? Why should you care who I am? Who I am is irrelevant, but I do believe the message I have to share with you is important and is relevant for you and your life. But in order for me to effectively convey that message to you, I need to tell you who I am.

I had once been an angry atheist actor in the entertainment industry who was essentially seeking fame and fortune. I became a Christian in 2004 at the age of 21. By the time I left Hollywood, I had been in 27 different television shows and movies and had also been in a few television commercials as well. However, I was essentially pushed out of the ‘biz’ due to my new-found Christian faith. I eventually came to a crossroad of Christ or compromise. I chose Christ.

But how did I get from being an atheist to becoming a Christian? Though a lot happened in my early life that led up to my being in California at the age of 15, my journey essentially began after I graduated high school early at the age of 16. I grew up agnostic, which is to say that I didn’t know what to believe. All I knew is that the world around me filled me with sadness, confusion, and anger. And that anger caused me to do many things that I now regret. I had done some horrible things in my life prior to being saved. I had lied, cheated, stolen things, destroyed property, hurt people — both emotionally and physically, and I had even murdered animals for ‘fun.’ For the most part, I had lived a selfish life. I had not lived the way GOD had intended me to live. But why would I? I didn’t know GOD existed; further, the culture around me convinced me that the only thing that was important in life is pleasure or happiness.

After I graduated high school early at the age of 16, I didn’t do anything with my life except occasionally film some projects for acting. Oh yeah, and party and get drunk. All that free time provided me with too much time and I spent much of that time thinking about all the evil I saw in the world and all the pain and suffering that came with it. Because I was 16 and knew everything (ha!), I decided I was an atheist. Truly though, I didn’t put much of my own thought into that decision. As I said earlier, the culture that surrounded me more or less indoctrinated me and fed me the belief that the only one who is in charge of my life is myself and the only thing that’s important is that I’m happy. I never heard from GOD. I never saw GOD. I considered that to be case-closed conclusive evidence (or lack thereof) that GOD didn’t exist to me and for me; therefore, GOD didn’t exist anywhere at all. If GOD did exist, why would GOD not make Himself known? After all, I would. And certainly, I know how to be GOD… right?

At one point, I was an atheist who even mocked Christians. Sad, but true. And I felt that other religions were even more ridiculous, but for some reason I targeted Christians. I felt as if Christians believed a lie and they only did so because they were weak and unable to face reality. I always told them that Christ was their crutch. I was full of pride — I believed that everything good that happened in my life was simply because of how awesome I was. I remember that whenever someone complimented me and asked me how I accomplished something, I told them, “Because I’m Trent.” After all, I had played baseball and had a batting average of .538, I played defensive end in football for both my school and a league and both of my teams were undefeated and won the championships. Not only that, but I had the most sacks for both the school and the league. I had also been an all-state wrestler and placed in state. And by the time I was 17, I had become a real actor in Hollywood and had received a lot of praise because of it. Oh, yes — I was awesome… wasn’t I?

However, my confidence was a facade — it was all for show. (Can you believe it? An actor putting on a performance? No way!) I was prideful and believed that I was awesome — true — but at the same time I had extremely low self-esteem and I didn’t believe others liked me — especially females. I had always felt less than adequate. All the females seemed to like the other guys around me because they were bigger, taller, and stronger. I was a small guy. As a freshman in high school, I weighed 85 pounds. That should give you a pretty good idea about how small I was. In fact, I remember being a freshman in high school and looking at all the other neanderthals in the gym locker room with their caveman beards and Austin Powers chest hair and wondering what was wrong with my undeveloped body. But that’s why I wanted to show people that I was awesome. I just wanted other people to tell me that I was awesome. I wanted others to tell me what I already knew was true about myself. I lived for the approval of others yet put on a performance as if I didn’t care what others thought.

Though I had done some bad things in my life, my heart was typically soft and not calloused and I did have a lot of love for people in general. Even as an atheist, I went out of my way to help people. As a side note, that is something that religious people often misunderstand: they tend to think that atheists are bad people who do bad things. But the truth is that a lot of atheists strive to do good in life. Not always, of course, but typically more often than not. I was one of those atheists who tried to do some good. Sometimes I only helped people because I felt obligated to do so, but most of the time I helped people because I genuinely wanted to make their lives better. I started my atheistic journey as a secular humanist, which is to say that I believed that the existence of GOD wasn’t necessary for good to exist in the world.

However, the little sliver of hope for humanity that I had possessed eventually dissipated and I slipped into nihilism. The burdens of life became too much for me and they broke me down. I had a longing to be loved and to find true love, yet I could not obtain what I desired. All of my achievements meant nothing because I didn’t have love. In fact, I felt completely unlovable. At the age of 17, I lost interest in everything and experienced what I thought was the darkest of depression. One night, I spent the late hours crying and I wrote out a suicide letter. (You can read my suicide letter in my book, Last Request, which is the longer and more detailed version of my testimony.)

And I didn’t know it then, but when I got to the end of my suicide letter, GOD flooded my mind with thoughts of all the people in my life whom I respected and loved. I ended up not going through with my suicide because I was too sad to even try. I was going to jump to my death from the top of a California cliff. But instead, I sat there and couldn’t even muster up enough energy to get up to jump off. Can you imagine being that sad? I was so sad that I wanted to kill myself yet I was so sad that I didn’t have enough energy to even attempt my own suicide. I didn’t realize it then, but that was GOD announcing “recalculating” and I actually listened to His direction. Just as a GPS navigation system patiently recalculates with every wrong turn we make, GOD does the same. At that time when I had considered suicide, I didn’t know that it was GOD who had flooded my mind with thoughts of loved ones in order to redirect me away from suicide. GOD used the very thing I longed for the most to prevent me from suicide. And that thing was love. The love for others made me realize that I couldn’t do what I wanted to do because I would be just like the ones who had hurt me. And because GOD works in such awesome and amazing ways, GOD would later use my longing for true love to reveal Himself to me (I’ll get to that soon enough).

A lot of people have failed attempts at suicide, but I had a failed attempt of a failed attempt. I thought to myself, “Am I that much of a loser that I failed at failing? I can’t even fail right!” — After my failed attempt of a failed attempt at suicide, I remember thinking to myself that if I just found true love in the form a gorgeous female, I could be happy. It’s funny to think about now, but it wasn’t funny then. And a lot of us feel that way, don’t we? We say, “If I just had this, then I could be happy. If I only had that, then I could be happy.” For me, that thing was a fairytale romance. I believed that if I only had a relationship with that one special female who could complete me, my troubles would go away. (I’m not certain why I thought that inviting a woman and her complications into my already-complicated life would make life less complicated, but that’s what I thought.) But I also remember telling myself that I would never have a Christian girl as my girlfriend because I would never be able to tolerate her fairytale nonsense. I wanted a fairytale romance yet refused to accept a Christian girl because of her fairytale nonsense? Can you see where this is going? Can you guess what happened? …I ended up falling in love with a Christian girl. How did that happen? It happened because everyone knew that I would go out of my way to help someone. And that’s how I met her.

Her name was Sarina. I met her because she was hanging out with a girl I knew. That girl and Sarina had somehow managed to get stranded somewhere and that girl knew that I would come pick them up and bring them home. And I did. And that’s how I met Sarina. Sarina was unlike any other Christian that I had ever known before — she didn’t judge me and her love for me was genuine. Sarina didn’t try to change me; she only loved me. She had extremely high standards and morals that she applied to herself, but she never tried to change me. It was a little odd because I didn’t quite meet those high standards, yet she somehow saw something in me that I never even saw in myself. And she decided to give me a chance. And we became a couple.

After I already had my heart attached to her, Sarina told me one day that she had a terminal illness known as Cystic Fibrosis (a progressive, genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections, limits the ability to breathe over time, and eventually leads to respiratory failure and causes the victim to suffocate to death). I remember the day she told me as if it were yesterday. Sarina told me that she had a terminal illness and she has had it since she was born. She then told me that she wasn’t going to be alive for a long time and because of that she would understand if I decided not to be with her any longer. But I couldn’t walk away from her — I loved her. You should never walk away from the person you love just because the situation isn’t the way you hoped it would be. True, her condition wasn’t convenient to the lifestyle I had wanted to live, but that didn’t matter. Love should conquer all. She was everything that I had been longing for. How could I walk away from her? I could not and so I did not. I decided to fight the fight with her. And that decision is what ended up changing my life forever.

Despite the challenges of Sarina’s terminal illness, being in the relationship with Sarina was like being on a Disney cruise ship dream vacation. It was an amazing relationship. She truly was the fairytale romance I had always longed for. But her health quickly declined and I ended up living with her in the hospital for a while and spending my time helping her do her treatments. I won’t get into all the details of the treatments, but it wasn’t easy to deal with.

Sarina eventually succumbed to her illness. Her eventual death sank my cruise ship and I was brought down to rock bottom. I thought I had been at rock bottom before when I wrote my suicide letter, but this was truly rock bottom. After all, Sarina was supposed to have been the cure for my depression. She was supposed to be the solution that caused my problems to go away. But she was gone. And what made matters worse was that she died on the very day of our anniversary. I arrived in Ohio with anniversary gifts in hand at the hospital when I found out she died while I was on my way there. I didn’t make it in time. I was with her for exactly one year to the day.

Sarina’s mother — knowing I wasn’t a believer — gave me a Bible at Sarina’s memorial service, which was held in Ohio where she came from and where she died. It was actually The Message translation of the Bible, which is a paraphrased version of the Bible. Had she been anyone else, I probably would have punched that person in the face. Truly, that’s how angry I was that she gave me a Bible. But because it was her mom and I knew she was suffering more than me, I took that Bible. I did not thank her for that Bible, but I did take it.

When I eventually got back home in California, I tossed that Bible in the corner of my bedroom. But every time I ended up walking in and out of that room, that Bible caught the corner of my eye and was like a thorn in my side. It made me angry. It was there at rock bottom that I waged war against GOD and I set out on a mission to find Truth. I went from being in a cruise ship that sank to being on a crusade in a battleship.

The first thing I decided I needed to do was to read the Bible for myself — from cover to cover! I believed that I was going to systematically point out every flaw and contradiction in the Bible. I believed that I was going to prove once and for all that the Bible isn’t true and that GOD did not exist. Toward the beginning of my reading — that being Genesis — I had written many notes of negative thoughts, criticisms, critical questions, and obvious objections. But by the time I had finished reading the entire Bible, I realized that I only had more questions than I had answers. What made matters much more challenging for me was that much of my research had pointed toward Truth being in favor of the Bible. Well, how could that be?! But more than that, my heart began to stir and formulate some belief. Who was this Jesus? Why did I like Him so much? I was confused. It was like Jim Carrey’s Grinch when he felt his heart beat and grow: “Max! Help me! I’m feeling!…. What is happening to me?!”

I then made a decision that I would put forth genuine effort to talk to the GOD of the Bible and ask for GOD to reveal Himself to me. I decided that it was only fair that if GOD did exist, that I must be open to possibility and not start from a point of  automatic rejection. So, like René Descartes, I decided it was best to empty myself of all preconceived notions and presuppositions and to start with a blank slate. At that point, I knew I existed but I didn’t know why. That’s how I began my Quest For Truth. It was just as much philosophical as it was spiritual. I started by praying to a GOD I wasn’t sure existed. I asked for signs and miracles. I wanted undeniable proof. What I received was little signs here and there — sprinkles of possibilities and maybes — but I wrote all of them off as being coincidences. They just weren’t convincing.

But then in April of 2004 (about six months after Sarina had passed away), I experienced the first major miracle that would end up changing my life forever. Now, stop and ponder on that for a moment. It took six months of dedicated investigation for me to receive my first miracle. That was six months of silence during six months of searching. Ponder on that. What does that mean to you?

Back when Sarina and I had been together, we had used a specific walking path as part of her treatment process so she could try to breathe better. On that night in April of 2004, I decided to walk on that same path to try to clear my mind and organize my thoughts. While walking along that path, specific Scriptures popped into my mind. The first was Matthew 17:20, which stated that with a mustard seed of faith a mountain could be moved. As soon as that Scripture popped into my mind, I got filled with rage. Oh, I was angry! The idea that a mountain could be moved by faith was so absurd that it made me [figuratively] catch on fire with fury. I felt like Human Torch from the Fantastic Four, except I didn’t feel fantastic and I probably would have just set everything on fire and destroyed stuff.

And while I was angry at the thought of a mountain moving, Matthew 21:19 popped into my mind and then I got angry at the thought of Jesus making a fig tree wither. I stopped walking and started yelling at GOD. Essentially, what I said was that the time was now or never and I was making my decision that night as to whether or not I would believe in the GOD of the Bible. I demanded that if GOD was real, that He show Himself to me. If GOD can show Himself to Moses in a burning bush, then GOD can show Himself to me in a bush! I debated if I wanted to feel dumb, but then I decided that knowing the Truth was more important than the possibility of feeling dumb. And so I pointed at a bush and commanded the life out of it in the name of Jesus by the power of GOD. But immediately, I changed my mind about which bush I wanted to specifically target. The bush that was next to the one I originally chose was much thicker and fuller of life. So I then pointed to the bigger bush and commanded the life out of that one. And then I waited. I stared at those two bushes for what seemed like eternity. Eventually, I realized that nothing was going to happen and so I left, yelling and angry. I felt so stupid! If anyone happened to be watching me, they would have thought I went insane! I talked to bushes!

The next day, I felt completely deflated and defeated. I knew that it was merely a matter of time before I fell back into that dark depression and would consider suicide again. But I was afraid that I wouldn’t be able to convince myself not to go through with it next time. By nightfall, I went walking again. My purpose for walking was to try to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. I ended up walking on that same path yet again. But when I came to those bushes on that very next night, I saw that those two bushes and only those two bushes had been cut down to stubs. They looked as if someone from the park came in and trimmed them to nothing. All the leaves and limbs were on the ground next to them. I received an answer! It was a miracle! …Wait! Or was it?! <BOOM!> A bomb of doubt immediately exploded in my mind with shrapnel that shredded my moment of belief. Those bushes had been altered by cutting utensils. That means that a human had done it. Not GOD! So had someone witnessed my meltdown moment the night before? Was someone now messing with me? It’s true that only those two bushes had been cut to nothing, but it had obviously been done by a human. Therefore, I had to eliminate it as a miracle! I was filled with rage yet again! I was Human Torch again — flame on! I yelled out at GOD that if He wanted those bushes to be lifeless, He should have done it by His power alone and leave me without any doubt! At best, I could only label it as a coincidence. Yet again.

About a month later, on May 07, 2004, multiple events led up to one horrible night. I had been involved in Hollywood, yet by this time I had completely lost interest in everything associated with that lifestyle. It all just felt so worthless and meaningless. By the end of that horrible night, after leaving a red carpet event, somehow finding myself in Sarina’s ex-boyfriend’s apartment with my friends buying drugs from his roommate, I eventually made it home and felt completely empty and at the end of myself. I didn’t want to live the Hollywood party lifestyle anymore. In fact, I didn’t want to live at all anymore. Again. I was tired of everything and there seemed to be no hope for a fulfilling life. And there seemed to be no answers, only coincidences. Coincidences that I couldn’t count on.

That night, I felt connected to the book of Ecclesiastes and its wisdom that all this life has to offer is smoke that dissipates. You can’t grasp it. It all amounts to nothing. But of course, that’s only if you place your focus on the worldly life. And that’s where it seemed I was at that time. And there it was again, my old familiar friend — darkness. I felt like Simon and Garfunkel had been singing in the background. (Go away Simon and Garfunkel!) I kept thinking about all the collective coincidences I had experienced over the seven months since Sarina’s death. Why had there been so many? Why haven’t any of them given me concrete proof? Why was my entire quest for Truth only leaving me more confused than I had ever been before? I broke down and decided to give the GOD of the Bible one last chance in a desperate attempt to discover Truth. I asked GOD for something. Something! Anything! But something of significance! Something real! Something that I wouldn’t be able to doubt or deny!

That very night, I experienced what I can only call a vision. It was more than just a dream. In my vision, I was at a party, hanging out with celebrities in a casual occurrence. Suddenly, all the clocks began to go crazy and malfunction. I went to the rooftop of the building, with many others also coming out onto the roof. The sky started filling with stars, the stars appearing out of nowhere, getting bigger and brighter as if coming closer. Suddenly, all the stars started falling from the sky. The stars that fell transformed into hail and a massive hailstorm commenced, growing more violent as time went on. I started yelling to the people that we should run, but then some man came up to me and told me that there was no point in running. At that moment, I got hit in the head with a chunk of ice. It hurt! I then held a thick book over my head, but the hail went through the book and hit me in the head again. After that, I decided that the man was wrong and running was a good idea. I ran inside the building and everyone followed after me. While watching the hailstorm from inside, we saw that it became so violent that it started tearing everything down and smashing things. It felt like it even caused the building we were in to collapse in on us. I then woke up and something instructed me to write a message down (which I did — it’s in my book, Last Request).

GOD eventually led me to the interpretation of that dream. The meaning of the dream was that there will come a time when all things, as to the things that pertain to our understanding, will eventually come to an end. It means, when that time comes, time doesn’t exist because there won’t be anymore time left. It’s as if saying, “You had all the time you ever needed to change your life, but now time is up and it’s time to face Judgement.” When the stars fell from the sky, that was to say that even celebrities — the people who are looked up to as people of importance — can and will fall. Status on this Earth means nothing for what is to come. The thick book that I held over my head was the Bible. The hail went through and hit me even with me holding it over my head for protection. That means that religion cannot save you. Knowing GOD’s Word simply isn’t enough. We must also live out GOD’s Word. This is an issue of the heart. The Bible isn’t meant to stay in your head, but to live in your heart and to reside in the whole being of who you are. A changed life will be evident. We can’t hide behind the Bible or Christianity. It is not enough to simply call yourself a Christian. It is not enough to simply be a Christian only on Sundays. Because it was a celebrity event in my vision, that means that people who are led up to be important in this world actually don’t mean a thing when judgment is based upon accepting Christ and loving others.

The interpretation of my vision wasn’t available to me right away. So, that vision without interpretation didn’t bring me to complete confidence in Christ. It made me question my life and the possibility of GOD yet again, but I still could not bring myself to committing my life to Christ. I still was not convinced that GOD absolutely existed. That vision felt so real! I was more open to the possibility of there being a supernatural realm. But I was still confused and full of doubts. I was so frustrated! I asked for something that would remove all doubt. Sure — I actually received something, but that something left me confused! I kept experiencing all these different things, yet nothing seemed absolutely convincing! There was always room for doubt! Everything I ever experienced up to this point, I had been able to write off as being coincidences. Or could I? Were coincidences real? Could I even say that? And especially so many of them?

Later on, the interpretation of the vision also revealed to me that having the Bible, knowing the Bible, and even using the Bible does not exempt me from experiencing a sinful fallen world of pain and suffering. That’s just a part of this fallen world. And that was one of the main issues that kept me from GOD. I simply couldn’t fathom how there could be a loving GOD with so much pain and suffering in this world. And I am convinced that that issue is the main problem for most unbelievers. I eventually (years later) came to understand the big picture and how it all fits together. I wrote articles about the perceived problem of evil and also an article about suffering. But at that time, pain and suffering was a huge hurdle that kept me from belief.

I would eventually receive yet another miracle, but it didn’t come until two months later. So again, it was just another two months of silence while searching. Now, I used to perform for children’s birthday parties. I dressed up as a clown or costume characters. I wore costumes that were worn down, stained, tattered and torn, smelled awful, and should have been replaced years before by newer and cleaner costumes. I did horrible magic tricks, made mediocre balloon animals, gave out cheap and tasteless candy, and entertained children for an hour at a time. (Did I sell it? Do you want to hire me for your child’s next birthday party? Ha!)

Toward the end of July of 2004, my boss called me and told me that someone had called out sick and he desperately needed someone to fill in for a birthday party for one of his important clients. He told me that the location of the party was much farther than I had ever gone before, but that he would pay me a little more if I went. I agreed to go. On July 30th, I picked up the costumes that I would be using for the parties over the weekend (July 31st and August 1st). That very night, I received yet another vision.

In my vision, I was at some unknown location, looking at a lighthouse that was overlooking a cliff. While I was looking at the lighthouse, I saw someone in my peripheral vision standing beside me to my right, but I couldn’t tell who this person was. Every time I looked to my right, there was no one there. But as soon as I looked back at the lighthouse, that person was there again in my peripheral vision. As a whole, the vision was serene. It was a beautiful scenic location. But that was it. I woke up. It felt real — just like the other visions! I felt as if I had actually been there. But so what? What did it mean? At the time, it meant absolutely nothing. And so I wrote it off.

After I woke up and got ready, I pulled out my maps so I could write out the directions to the location of the birthday party. While doing that, I noticed that there was a lighthouse notated on the map, probably about 20 minutes away from the party location. I had never once been to a lighthouse in my life at that time. All I could think about was the vision I had just experienced. But how could I have placed myself at a lighthouse before I knew that I would even be near one? All I could think about the entire time I performed at that birthday party was the lighthouse I saw in my vision and the lighthouse I saw on the map. I messed up everything at that party; I didn’t do anything right. I wasn’t focused. After the party, I drove to the lighthouse that was notated on the map. I drove to the Point Vicente Lighthouse in Rancho Palos Verdes in Southern California.

When I got to the lighthouse, I was filled with both excitement and fear — it was the exact same place I had seen in my vision! Down to the very details of the picnic tables that were there! But what did it all mean?! After soaking in the breathtaking scenery for a long time, it dawned on me that someone had been standing next to me in my vision. What did that mean? Was I supposed to wait there at that location until meeting this mysterious person? Fine! I felt stupid waiting for someone just because of my vision, but— fine! And so, I waited at that lighthouse until the sun set and it was dark. Only one person ever showed up, but it was a girl at a distance and she didn’t even stay long. No one else came. I spent hours at that location and ended up leaving that night more confused than ever. I couldn’t explain why I had seen this lighthouse in a vision before I ever went there in person. And I didn’t know why only half my vision came true. No one stood next to me while I had been there.

I later found out that the person standing beside me in my vision was Jesus. Just like in my vision, Jesus has always been with me yet I never saw Him. And of course, I later found out the significance of the lighthouse and how Jesus is the Light that saves those traveling in the darkness. But at that time, without interpretation, it still wasn’t enough to convince me to completely commit myself to belief in GOD or Christ or Christianity. Somehow, I managed to write it off yet again as just another coincidence.

So far, I had experienced three miracles. It would take five different miracles to finally convince me. So what were the fourth and fifth miracles? For sake of space, I’m not going to explain all the details of the fourth miracle (you can read them in my book), but it arrived three months later in October of 2004 after I had run into an old friend. I had known this girl when I was 16 and ended up running into her again at the age of 21. To make a long story short, this girl ended up confiding in me, telling me that she was a medium and was able to communicate with “the other side.” She ended up giving me messages from “Sarina.” She had been able to tell me intimate details about Sarina and I’s relationship that she should never have known. She ended up convincing me that one of three possibilities was happening: (1) she was either communicating with Sarina; (2) she had communicated with something else that knew intimate details about Sarina and myself; or, (3) she somehow managed to find my hidden journal in my home, read it, and was using the information for some unknown purpose against me. I didn’t like any of those possibilities.

I just wanted to know the truth. Was she a con-artist? Was she trying to get something from me? If so, what was she trying to get? How could she possibly benefit herself by using Sarina? How did she know all those details that she never should have known? I wanted to put pressure on her and essentially interrogate her until I found out the truth of what she was doing and why she was doing it.

What ended up finally convincing me that there was a ‘beyond natural’ (or, supernatural) was when certain things happened that I knew was beyond her control. While I had been with her in person, with our cell phones in plain sight on a table, our cell phones had sent text messages to each other’s phones. The content of the messages were old text messages that had been sent long ago. But each one of those text messages mentioned Sarina by name in the text. And this medium girl told me that “Sarina” communicated with her and told her that she was the cause of the text messages being sent. At one point, “Sarina” even told this girl when she would receive the next text to her phone from my phone and it happened exactly as prophesied. There was no way this medium girl could have predicted that she would receive that text message from my phone at a specific time — especially since I never sent the message yet she still received it from my phone. The prediction was that the final text message would arrive to her phone from my phone when I was with a friend of mine.

The medium girl and I eventually picked up my friend from her work (because she didn’t have a ride home) and we all went to go eat at Jack In The Box together. The medium girl and I had our phones on the table when she received the promised text message from my phone. And the content of the message mentioned Sarina by name yet again. But now I had a witness. And this friend who was the witness was the same girl who used to hang out with Sarina and I while we had been dating. What were the chances of that? It frightened my friend. And truthfully, it frightened me.

The text messages were not sent by either the medium girl or myself. The phones were in plain sight. We had different service providers. I was convinced at that point that something beyond natural caused this communication to occur. But who or what did I communicate with? Finally, I had reached a tipping point and believed that there was a ‘beyond natural.’ But did the existence of the supernatural mean that the GOD of the Bible was real and true? What about all the other religions? I still had a lot to learn and discover at that time.

Now, because the supernatural is a part of my testimony, I need to bring clarity to communication with the other side. Satan only has power if it is given to him, right? But did I give the devil any power? I had to think about that. Assuming that Satan existed, I had to admit that yes — I did give him power. The power that I allowed Satan to hold over me was the fact that I loved Sarina so much that I desperately wanted to believe that I had been communicating with her. But was it her? After much prayer and debate, I eventually decided that I was never going to communicate with the other side again. Not only does GOD’s Word instruct us not to do this (Leviticus 19:31; 20:6; Deuteronomy 18:10-12; Isaiah 8:19; Galatians 5:19-20), but I came to the conclusion that if it had truly been Sarina, then that’s all I needed and my focus should be placed on Jesus where it belongs from that point forward. That’s what Sarina would want anyway — she would have told me to place my focus on Jesus and not her, like she did so many times while we had been dating. However, if it wasn’t truly Sarina, then it was someone or something beyond natural that was pretending to be Sarina. But why pretend to be Sarina? If something was pretending to be Sarina, I shouldn’t be communicating with it anyway. So either way, I determined that I didn’t need to be communicating with the other side and would never do it again. The one good thing that ultimately came from all of it was that I had been forced to acknowledge that there is a beyond natural, or supernatural. And my fifth and final miracle was definitely supernatural.

Shortly after I had decided to commit myself to Christ and to call myself a Christian, I experienced something so scary and sobering that it would solidify my decision. On one particular night, I woke up suddenly and there at the foot of my bed, right in front of me and next to my feet, was blackness. It was in the shape of a human figure, but there were no details that defined this being. There was no face. I didn’t see any outlining of clothing. It was just a black figure. As soon as I saw it, fear overcame me and I panicked. My first reaction was to get my feet away from it, but I wasn’t able to move my feet. They were paralyzed. Then the black figure slowly moved its way toward my head. Once the blackness reached my waist, everything it covered seemed to be paralyzed. In one single moment during my panic, it was as if I heard a voice tell me, “Call upon the name of the Lord and you shall be saved.” Immediately responding to that call of action, I spoke to the blackness and commanded it to be gone in the name of Jesus Christ. As soon as I spoke those words, the blackness vanished and I had been able to move again. That was the straw that broke the camel’s back and the belief that cast out doubt. That led me to believe in Jesus with certainty. It was the name of Jesus that caused that black figure to vanish. It wasn’t the names of Vishnu, Allah, Muhammad, or Buddha. I didn’t spout off some fortune cookie Confucianism to cast it away. It was the name of Jesus.

Understand this: prior to 2004, I never had experiences like what I experienced that year. And I have never again had any experiences like them since then. The year 2004 was the year of miracles and the year I dedicated my life to Christ. However, it took a year from the time Sarina died to the time I committed myself to Christ. I still had unanswered questions. I was still confused about a lot of things. I still continued my investigation for my Quest For Truth. But I knew Jesus saved me and was ultimately guiding me to the Truth I desired to know.

And it all started with my heart’s desire to know and experience true love. That desire placed me on a cruise ship where I experienced my fairytale romance story with Sarina. But I was eventually forced off that cruise ship. Once off that cruise ship, I placed myself in a battleship against GOD. However, Jesus eventually sank my battleship. After my battleship sank, I sank to the bottom. While at the bottom, feeling as though I would drown, I saw that Jesus had put Himself down there on my behalf and He pushed me up to the surface. Once at the surface, I noticed that Christ left the lifeboat intact. The battleship had been destroyed, but the lifeboat was available for me.

In the Genesis 3:9, when Adam and Eve had sinned, they hid from GOD out of shame and GOD asked Adam, “Where are you?” Understand this: GOD didn’t ask Adam where he was because GOD didn’t know. GOD knew exactly where Adam was, but He wanted Adam to realize where he truly was at in life (which was the wrong place) and to confess it.

And after Jesus sank my battleship, while I floated in the sea of sin, Jesus asked me, “Where are you?” Like Adam in the garden, I admitted that I was in the wrong place. I repented, asked for GOD’s guidance, and then accepted His forgiveness. And then Christ essentially announced, “Recalculating…” — It was at that point that I made a decision to listen to GOD’s guidance and get into the lifeboat that He had waiting for me. How did I get saved? How did I receive the peace and joy I was never able to obtain through my own tireless efforts? I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior and I made a decision to align myself to GOD’s absolute moral standard and follow GOD’s directions. Jesus accomplished what we were never able to accomplish on our own. Jesus saved me from myself by doing what I could never do by my own efforts.

If you want to experience my journey in detail as I had experienced it, you can do that by reading my book, “Last Request” so that you may fully comprehend GOD’s love for me. And that’s just my story. Jesus saved me from myself, but Jesus can do the same for you and all of your loved ones as well. In fact, He already did! It is finished! We know it’s finished because it is written in John 19:30 and Mark 16:6! All you need to do is simply accept what Jesus did for you, repent, ask for GOD’s guidance, and accept His forgiveness. GOD’s mercy is the fact that GOD doesn’t give us what we do deserve, which is separation from Him due to our sins. GOD’s grace is the fact that GOD gives to us what we do not deserve, which is union with His Holy perfection and love despite our sins. Jesus already became the necessary sacrifice to atone for sins. All you need to do is confess Christ, live a life of obedience in a new life in Christ, and praise Him for what He did, what He is currently doing, and what He will do.

In all my investigative research throughout all other major world religions and beliefs, man attempts to earn his way to salvation. Christianity is unique, not only in historical accuracy, but also in the Truth that GOD came to man with salvation. Jesus pursued me with passion because He loves me. All my life, I desired to know and experience true love. When all was said and done, I finally learned what true love is all about. And the picture of true love looks like Jesus willingly sacrificing Himself to save me even though I never did anything to deserve His love. He died for us knowing full well that a lot of us would refuse to live for Him. Yet with his His arms spread out open on the cross, He told us, “I love you this much.”

When I finally heard His voice and was able to recognize it as GOD speaking to me, I opened up and let Him in. And when I finally allowed Jesus within, my entire life changed outwardly as if I were a lamp on a lampstand, presenting the Light to everyone still lost in the darkness of this world. The knowledge of this true love brought me to say, “Jesus, You died for me? Of course I will live for You!”

Let me as you a question: Isn’t it time for real change? Jesus is pursuing you right now. Do you think it’s a coincidence that you now know my testimony and that I’m pointing you to Jesus? Just because you know of Jesus, doesn’t necessarily mean that you know Jesus. I know my Savior. I know who pushed me up from the depths of despair when I was drowning. I know who pulled me up into the lifeboat and showed me the light of the lighthouse. I know who cast out the darkness in my life. I know Jesus. If you want to know Jesus in a real and powerful way that will completely change the way you see things and the way you live, invite Him into your heart right now and ask Him to align your thoughts to His will and to change you from the inside out!

“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.”
(Revelation 3:20) -ESV

Will you let Him in?

The Heart Is The Start

When meeting someone for the first time, one of the first (if not the first) questions people usually ask is, “What do you do for a living?”

Many people try to identify others by the things they do or the way they look instead of seeing them for who they truly are, what they care about, and who they are striving to become. I believe it is more important to know who a person is striving to become than to know what it is that person currently does. Truly, the heart should be the start because what’s important is hidden within and often remains unseen.

And so, we are going to play a game. I am going to describe to you seven different people. As I am describing these people to you, I want you to try to imagine what each person looks like. First, imagine whether the person is male or female. After you assume the gender of the person, I want you to imagine the age, height, and weight of the person. I want you to also imagine if the person has a lot of facial hair or if the person is clean shaven. Imagine the person’s skin tone, hair color and even the eye color. Does the person have freckles? Does the person have scars? What clothing would the person be wearing? After I describe all seven individuals, I will reveal the identity of each person.

Take out a piece of paper, a writing utensil, and write the numbers one through seven going down. Write your guess after reading each description. The answers will follow. (Let me know if you guessed any correctly, and if so, how many.)

The Descriptions:

(1) This person had a sister and a brother who both died at an early age.

(2) This person was born in 1929. This person lived in a confined space with many other people and felt as if the atmosphere was suffocating at times. At the age of only 15, this person got arrested. At the young age of 16, this person died from typhoid fever; in addition, all family members with the exception of the father ended up dying.

(3) This person was born in Australia. As a child, this person struggled mentally, emotionally, and even physically. At one point, this person considered suicide. At the age of 21, this person graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce and with a double major in accountancy and financial planning. This person is now a Christian evangelist and motivational speaker.

(4) This person was one of eight siblings and was also the runt of the litter.

(5) This person dressed with clothing that proclaims importance and that is because this person possesses an important title or position. This person was one of the few who comprised the ruling class in the area. This person was a successful person by human standards. However, this person eventually caused an innocent and much loved man to receive a death sentence and was later despised because of it.

(6) This person grew up agnostic and eventually became a performer in Hollywood for the entertainment industry and had been in dozens of television shows.

(7) As a baby, this person was born in a dirty place where animals typically go to eat.

The Revealing:

(1) It was only after years of rejection and ‘failure’ that this man succeeded. That man was Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln signed the first of the Homestead acts, allowing poor people to own land. He also established the United States Department of Agriculture, he signed the Morrill Land-Grant Act which led to creation of numerous universities, and he also issued the Emancipation Proclamation which led to abolishing slavery in US.

(2) The young girl named Anne Frank eventually went on to inspire millions of people despite the fact that she wasn’t even alive here on Earth. Her father (only remaining family member) found Anne’s diary, was amazed by her maturity and character and then got it published. Anne provided wonderful insight into a dark moment of history inundated with Nazis and also showed the world that maturity can be found in youth and a hero can look like a female.

(3) This person is Nick Vujicic; he was born with tetra-amelia syndrome, a rare disorder characterized by the absence of all four limbs. Nick has encouraged, motivated and inspired millions of people simply because he overcame and never quit. Though he lives a life without limbs, his heart propels him in the direction he needs to go.

(4) This person is the great David of the Bible. Though no one else thought much of David because of his appearance, GOD saw David’s heart and it looked like a lampstand ready to shine GOD’s light. Before Samuel anointed David as the king who would replace Saul, Samuel saw David’s brother and thought he would be king because of his appearance. But examine GOD’s response:

“When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, ‘Surely the Lord’s anointed is before him.’ But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.’ ”
(1Samuel 16:6-7) -ESV

(5) This person is one of the many Pharisees whom Jesus opposed and often rebuked.

(6) This person is me, Trenton Gill. Worthless and meaningless is how I saw myself. Yet somehow, GOD saw in me the goodness I never saw in myself. Jesus knew my good heart and He saved me from myself and helped me to repent (turn around) and start living a righteous life of servitude that gives praise to GOD rather than the superficial life that would receive praise from people.

(7) This person is Christ Jesus. Jesus — fully GOD — became fully human in order to save us from ourselves. By His great sacrificial love, our bloodstained sinful selves have been whitewashed and cleansed and we will be able to live in His presence for all eternity.

When I described each person, did the physical appearance ever make a difference as to who they ended up becoming? Did age or gender make a difference? Did all of their ‘current’ jobs, tasks, labels or titles ever define who they would end up becoming? Did their history of whatever they lacked ever define who they would eventually become? No. Who you are right now can change so long as you possess the desire to change and put forth the effort and never quit.

Therefore, if you’re reading this and we don’t know each other, I will not risk shaming you by asking you what you do for a living. What you currently do is sometimes irrelevant to who you are and who you will become. After all, the famous rocker, Jon Bon Jovi, was a janitor before he became famous and eventually helped out with different charities. There’s something more important I want to ask you than what you do for a living: “Who are you and who are you striving to become?”

Share with me the following:

  • What are your short-term and long-term goals?
  • What are your dreams?
  • What do you care about most in life?
  • Where do you want to end up in the near future and distant future?
  • Who do you want to become?
  • After you leave Earth and go into eternity, what do you want to leave behind for everyone else still living on Earth?

You can be the person you desire to be; you can be the person you dream to be. Do you know your identity? Dare to dream! Vision and belief that are united with wisdom leads to possibility; possibility harbors potential; therefore, full potential is only possible with vision and belief. Do you believe? How is your faith?

“Jesus told them. ‘I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, “Move from here to there,” and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.’ ”
(Matthew 17:20) -NLT

“The Lord answered, ‘If you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, “May you be uprooted and thrown into the sea,” and it would obey you!’ ”
(Luke 17:6) -NLT

“I can do everything through Christ who strengthens me.”
(Philippians 4:13) -GW

“Jesus looked at them intently and said, ‘Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But with God everything is possible.’ ”
(Matthew 19:26) -NLT

Through Christ, you can accomplish anything so long as it is in alignment with GOD’s will. Again, I want to ask you a very important question: who are you and who are you striving to become? You need to know your identity.

“But Amos stood up to Amaziah: ‘I never set up to be a preacher, never had plans to be a preacher. I raised cattle and I pruned trees. Then GOD took me off the farm and said, “Go preach to my people Israel.”’ ”
(Amos 7: 14-15) -MSG

Scripture states that Amaziah was a priest and Amos was a shepherd. Amaziah basically told Amos not to preach in Bethel because it offended him and others.

I can relate to Amos quite well because I have told many people the same message and many people have responded by telling me the same thing that Amos heard. I never set up to be a preacher; I never had plans of being a preacher. Amos was a shepherd. I was an atheist actor in the entertainment industry with aspirations of fame and fortune. I had my sights set on money. But my desires and my title changed after I found my identity. And many people often tell me not to preach because my words sometimes offends people. It saddens me that people would get offended by Truth, but I must rank truth as more important than feelings. And it’s not my Truth to change. I didn’t write the Book of Truth, I merely share the message. I’m a messenger.

Pastor, teacher, or messenger — titles are irrelevant to GOD’s calling and are obsolete in Heaven. Titles are created by humans to accommodate human agenda; moreover, titles are not indicative of the true calling and cannot change the character of any human. As of right now — November 15, 2017 — I do not possess a certified title of pastor or minister; however, the lack of an official title doesn’t take away from my calling. I will continue to fulfill my calling and eventually people will throw a title on me because of the way I’m living out my calling. Consider the following four examples:

(1) Albert Einstein failed an entrance examination for the school of ETH in Zurich, Switzerland. He didn’t have a title then, but GOD designed him to be a genius. Later in life, he was awarded a Ph.D., became a professor at Karl-Ferdinand University in Prague, became President of the German Physical Society, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics, and received the Copley Medal from the Royal Society. Einstein is proof that a ‘nobody’ can be a ‘somebody’ of great significance. Einstein’s wisdom would have helped the human race advance whether he acquired those titles or not. But he acquired those titles because he lived out his calling and then humans threw titles on him.

(2) Adolf Hitler was considered a great leader at one point, but his title didn’t alter the demonic demeanor within him. Hitler’s title labeled him to be a leader and respected ruler; however, his orders to his army brought about the deaths of millions of innocent people. Hitler’s earthly title amongst the nazis meant very little to the soldiers who opposed him; moreover, his title meant nothing in the big picture of eternity. The nazis called him Fuhrer, which meant, “leader.” But do you know what he is called in Heaven? Well, he isn’t called anything because he’s not in Heaven.

(3) Pastor Steve Fender from Livingway Church of San Antonio, Texas shared with me one of the most amazing testimonies I’ve ever heard. After an alter call at one of Steve’s services, a man by the name of Ernest had asked Steve to talk to him and pray with him. Eventually, Ernest confessed to being a Mexican mafia hitman and that he had killed a lot of people. Ernest asked if GOD would still accept him because of all the murders he had committed and Steve told Ernest that no one is too far gone to be saved. Ernest’s title of ‘hitman’ wasn’t his true title. And once Ernest realized his real identity, he received his true calling and his true title. Repentance and faith bring salvation. Despite his past, Ernest was a preacher and that is how we should remember him.

(4) There are [far too] many people who earned the title of being a Priest, yet they were then later convicted and declared to be pedophiles.

There are some people who possess the title of ‘Priest’ (like Amaziah), yet their character proclaims them to be frauds and dirty — just like the Pharisees whom Jesus condemned. Amaziah was wrapped up in religion (rules, regulations, and rituals) and neglected to have a relationship with GOD.

Ponder on this: Jesus was wisdom in human form, yet He didn’t possess a Ph.D. Jesus didn’t need a P-H-D because he was with the title of G-O-D. His title was Messiah, or Christ, or Savior; however, He didn’t receive that title until after He already fulfilled the role. No one except His disciples gave Him the title of Messiah before His crucifixion. But the lack of the title didn’t take away from His calling.

Though the world tells us to take up titles, we are called to live the calling. Do not allow yourself to be beguiled by titles! Do not be fooled into believing you are who the world says you are! To fulfill your calling, you need only to look beyond the façade of worldly titles and possess zeal for the seal of GOD’s approval. The start is the heart!

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.”
(Psalm 51:10) -ESV

“And he called the people to him and said to them, ‘Hear and understand: it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.’…. But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander. These are what defile a person.’ ”
(Matthew 15:10-11, 18-20) -ESV

Amaziah was a Priest, yet GOD chose a shepherd (like David) named Amos to do the preaching of His Word. Amos made himself available to be used! If Amos was capable of caring for a herd and tending little details such as yard work [with honesty and integrity], then he could be trusted to do and say what was right – to preach. GOD basically said, “I don’t care that other humans label Amaziah as a Priest. Amos is my preacher.”

I challenge you to know your identity and pursue your calling rather than a title. Take action on what GOD has called you to do. If the world declares you to be nothing but a janitor yet GOD calls you to preach, then you’re a preacher! If the world declares you to be nothing but an old man (like Noah) yet GOD calls you to build an ark and protect the animals, then you’re a contractor, carpenter, soon-to-be sailor and captain, and wildlife preservationist! If the world declares you to be nothing but a tax collector yet GOD calls you to write a book, then you’re an author! Worldly titles mean nothing. Do not get so wrapped up in nothing that you end up missing out on everything GOD has for you. What is the true title you possess? Proclaim it in the name of Jesus Christ, by the power of GOD-Almighty! But know and understand that the heart is the start. In order to fulfill your calling, you need to purify and protect your heart. The reason David was chosen above all others was because he was a man after GOD’s own heart (1Samuel 13:14).

“But as for those whose heart goes after their detestable things and their abominations, I will bring their deeds upon their own heads, declares the Lord God.”
(Ezekiel 11:21) -ESV

But for those of us who desire to fulfill our true calling, all we need to do is ask Jesus to purify our hearts and align our thoughts with His will. By seeking first the Kingdom of GOD (GOD’s will), everything else will fall in place.

“And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.”
(Ezekiel 36:26-27) -ESV

“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you”
(Matthew 6:33) -ESV

Once purified, we must put on the breastplate of righteousness for protection (read Ephesians 6:10-20; see also Isaiah 59:17). Take note that the heart is protected by righteousness. A righteous life prevents the penetration of sin that desires to find its way in. Sin finding its way into the heart is like a sperm finding its way into an egg. We must protect the heart because the heart is the start.

“But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.”
(James 1:14-15) -ESV

I want to pray for three types of people:

  • If you have never accepted Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior yet you desire to do so, I want to pray with you and encourage you in your decision.
  • If you need to purify your heart and desire for GOD to remove your heart of stone and give you a new heart of flesh, let me know and I’ll pray with you and continue to pray for you. And I will also partner with you in a commitment to protecting your newly purified heart.
  • If the Holy Spirit has purified your heart throughout this message and you now desire to put on the breastplate of righteousness to protect your purified heart, I want to pray with you and continue to pray for you. And I will also partner with you in a commitment of fellowship to ensure accountability of a righteous life.
