The Single Life

Some Christians struggle with the single life; some Christians do not struggle and are content being single. I, Trenton, am currently single and I have been single pretty much my entire life. I am able to teach about the single life because I actually live it out.

First and foremost, if you’re single, you struggle with the temptation of lust, and you believe that being single is the worst scenario you could ever be in, then perhaps you need to take the advice from Paul:

(1Corinthians 7:9) -NASB
“But if they do not have self-control, let them marry; for it is better to marry than to burn with passion.”

If you’re single, you burn with passion, and you can’t seem to control yourself or find contentment in being single, then perhaps you should go out of your way to actively seek your husband/wife. There are many dating sites/apps available. However, marriage is to be taken seriously because GOD hates divorce.

So, if you’re single, you burn with passion, you cannot control yourself, and you cannot find contentment in being single, then you should marry. However, if you marry, you must remain faithful to your husband/wife. But if you feel, like some disciples did, that because of the seriousness of marriage and the consequence of divorce, it would be better not to marry, you must also know that you do not have a free reign to have sexual intercourse with whomever you please. Not only is purity important for righteousness, but sexual immorality is a terrible sin. The truth is that sex matters.

(1Corinthians 6: 12-20) -NASB
12 All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything. 13 Food is for the stomach and the stomach is for food, but God will do away with both of them. Yet the body is not for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body. 14 Now God has not only raised the Lord, but will also raise us up through His power. 15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ [Ephesians 5:22-32]? Shall I then take away the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? May it never be! 16 Or do you not know that the one who joins himself to a prostitute is one body with her? For He says, “The two shall become one flesh.” 17 But the one who joins himself to the Lord is one spirit with Him. 18 Flee immorality. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the immoral man sins against his own body. 19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? 20 For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.”

Sadly, many people who claim to be Christians hold the naturalistic view that sex is merely the fulfillment of a natural, primal desire that we have inherited from our evolutionary ancestors. According to this view, sex exists merely to pass on one’s genes to the next generation for the “survival of the species.” But if that were true, then rape would be a mere act of fulfilling a natural desire; further, rape would also need to be praised for ensuring the survival of the species. But we know that rape is wrong because morality is absolute and rape is absolutely wrong. According to GOD – the Creator of sex – there are three primary purposes for sex:

  1. Procreation (Genesis 1:28)
  2. Unity & faithfulness (Genesis 2:24)
  3. Pleasure (Proverbs 5:18-19)

However, our sinful society is backwards and upside-down. People nowadays pursue pleasure, are faithless and disregard marriage, and desire to prevent procreation

Therefore, if you’re single and you struggle with being single, then make an effort to find your husband/wife and get married. However, do not get married if you’re going to desecrate marriage with divorce. But you’re also not to have sexual intercourse outside of marriage. This means you need to either control yourself and remain single or get married and remain faithful in that marriage.

Now, if you are single and you are content being single, the remainder of this message is to strengthen you and encourage you. We must realize and understand that people do possess an identity apart from marriage. This is not to say that marriage is not good—it is good so long as it is in alignment with the original design of marriage (1 male + 1 female = 1 unity for 1 lifetime). And this brings us to the number one. Understand this: one is a whole number, not a half of a number. In fact, singleness can be a gift. The fact that such notable and influential leaders as Jeremiah, Ezekiel, John the Baptist, Paul, and Jesus were all single speaks highly of the single status, and that singleness should be seen as a viable, credible option in society — especially in Christianity!

Singleness is a gift to use for the Kingdom of GOD, not a curse that prevents us from becoming complete. We are complete in Christ alone (Colossians 2:10). So, if you are currently single, find joy in knowing that you are capable of achieving a lot for the Kingdom. But don’t take my word for it—read GOD’s Word on the matter (Matthew 19:12; 1Corinthians 7:7–8, 24, 32–35, 38; Philippians 4:11–13). In fact, we will all end up being single on the New Earth under the new heavens (Matthew 22:30; Mark 12:24–25; Luke 20:34–36). There is no marriage in Heaven; marriage is a gift for us on this earth for this specific time. However, two becoming one (Genesis 2:24; Matthew 19:5) isn’t a prerequisite for salvation. In fact, the mystery of two becoming one is Christ and the church (Ephesians 5:22-32).

Conclusion:

If you’re single and content in being single, your attention is not divided — that’s a good thing! You are able to solely focus on the Kingdom of GOD (Matthew 6:33). So, use your time well! Singleness is a gift to accomplish as much as possible for the Kingdom of GOD! The single life is not a wasted life! If it were, people such as Jeremiah and Paul wasted their lives. But we know they did not waste their lives; in fact, they stored up treasure for themselves in Heaven because they were willing to let go of the things of this world in order to pursue the Kingdom of Heaven.

(Matthew 6:19-20) -NASB
19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; 21 for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

(Mark 10:29-30) -NASB
29 Jesus said, ‘Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or farms, for My sake and for the gospel’s sake, 30 but that he will receive a hundred times as much now in the present age, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and farms, along with persecutions; and in the age to come, eternal life.’ “

The single life is not a wasted life. Use your time wisely. What are you doing with what you’ve been given?

Superhero: Armor of GOD: Shoes of Readiness

If you would rather read this message, the words are provided below…

This is Part 17 of my Superhero series. In the introduction of this series, I provided the argument that heroes are real and then I distinguished between heroes and superheroes. I also provided a list of what defines a superhero. In Part 1, we learned that superheroes recognize the absolute standard of Good and realize that evil is a mere privation of what is good. In Part 2, we learned that superheroes recognize the absolute moral standard and realize that what is wrong can only be known by the standard of what is right. In Part 3, I defined and expounded upon love because all superheroes are full of love and are compelled to act out from love. In Part 4, I explained that superheroes desire to save people from all forms of danger and/or death and this desire comes from love. In Part 5, we learned that superheroes are solution seekers. In Part 6, we saw that solution seekers are willing to sacrifice if necessary. In Part 7, we saw that sacrificial love steps forward and offers service. In Part 8, we saw that superheroes go above and beyond the call of duty. In Part 9, we saw that superheroes never give up! In Part 10, we saw that superheroes don’t need recognition – they are motivated only by love! In Part 11, we saw that relationships matter and teamwork works! In Part 12, we saw that the struggle is real; however, Jesus is the real solution to our real problems. In Part 13, we saw that despite problems, superheroes are more than conquerors! In Part 14, we saw that true superheroes do not have identity crises – they know who they are even if others don’t! In Part 15, we saw that superheroes are always ready to fight evil with the belt of Truth. In Part 16, we saw that superheroes are always ready to resist evil by putting on the breastplate of righteousness.

In this message (Part 17), we will see that superheroes are always ready to walk with purpose.

Continuing the examination of the whole armor of GOD, we are now instructed to put on the shoes of readiness (Ephesians 6:15).

Marvel’s superhero, Daredevil, is a great example of having feet of readiness. In his true civilian identity, Matthew Michael Murdock is a skilled and respected New York attorney, detective, tracker, and interrogation expert, as well as being an expert marksman. But the amazing thing about this superhero is that he is blind! However, Daredevil – though he is blind – is always alert and ready to respond appropriately to any situation and is prepared to dodge danger and evade evil. But not only is Daredevil ready to avoid the attacks of his adversaries, he is also ready to effectively combat evil and accomplish good.

Many people might believe Daredevil to be far-fetched fairytale nonsense, but there are numerous accounts of people being amazing despite being blind – click on the examples to see their inspirational stories:

So, what are the shoes of readiness? What purpose did shoes serve for a Roman soldier? What purpose do these spiritual shoes serve for us? The shoes were primarily composed of two parts: the greave and the shoe itself. The greave was a fitted piece of bronze or brass that began at the top of the knee and extended down past the lower leg, finally resting on the upper portion of the foot. The shoes were equipped with spikes on the bottom. How does this apply to our lives as superheroes for the Savior? Well, imagine a solider being completely covered with protective armor yet having bare and exposed feet. Just one rock, glass shard, or nail could bring a soldier down to his knees, trip him up and cause him to be overcome in battle. Because the feet carry the soldier and direct him to the battle and through the battle, protection for the feet are necessary.

For example, in Greek mythology, the most enduring story of the death of Achilles describes how one single arrow shot from a man named Paris landed in the one spot Achilles happened to be vulnerable – his heel. The one area of exposed weakness was enough to bring the great warrior down in defeat. Another example can be found in the comedic 1990 movie, Home Alone. In a hilarious scene of boobytraps and mishaps, the criminal, Marv, steps on a nail with his bare foot and then falls down stairs:

“Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil.”
(Ephesians 5:15-16) -NASB

May you also understand that it’s not necessary to have physical feet in order to put on the shoes of readiness. This is a spiritual war and the spiritual armor still applies to those who don’t have physical legs. There have been many people who have either lost their legs or were born without legs yet they accomplished good deeds in life. Consider the following examples:

Stand Your Ground:

The spikes on the bottom of the Roman soldier’s shoes helped him to have firm footing and prevent him from being pushed back or slip and fall down. Scripture tells us that we are to stand in the confidence of knowing that we have on the shoes of readiness given by the gospel of peace. The word “peace” is taken from the Greek word eirene, an old word that conveys the idea of a peace that prevails or a conquering peace. When you have strapped on that peace and you have peace on the bottom of your feet, you are immovable. This peace helps us stand our ground and hold you in place when the enemy tries to drive you back. The person who has the footing in peace is like a tree with deep roots that won’t get knocked down during a storm. In Ephesians 6:14, 1Corinthians 16:13, and 2Corinthians 1:24, for example, we are instructed to “stand.” It’s interesting to note that the majority of verses in the New Testament that have to do with standing also have to do with faith. It’s time to take a stand. Stand your ground! Don’t allow the enemy to push you back!

Dodging Danger; Evading Evil:

Due to fallen humanity’s inclination toward evil and war, it is estimated that there are about 110 million land mines throughout the world that are still in the ground right now. That’s what we created! Think: What are we creating? An estimated equal amount of mines are in stockpiles waiting to be used or destroyed. If de-mining efforts remain at about the same rate as they are now, and no new mines are planted, it is estimated to take over 1,000 years to get rid of all the world’s active land mines. Research declares that about every 20 seconds, someone in the world gets injured or dies due to mines. And that’s merely the danger of human physical warfare. Now imagine how many ‘mines’ have been strategically placed in the spiritual war that is waging all around us.

[Recommend Reading: Is Religion the Cause of Most Wars?]

Even after war is over, the remnants of war remains; wounds still must heal – both physically and mentally. The full extent of war’s destruction is evident in the aftermath through the process of rebuilding. The spiritual war was won when Christ sacrificed Himself on the cross and then rose again on the third day; however, there are still traps for those who refuse GOD’s gift of grace and mercy. There are traps for those of us who have accepted GOD’s gift of grace! Even though the enemy has been defeated, the spiritual mines still remain active. Until Christ returns and takes us to the New Earth under the New Heavens (Isaiah 65:17-25; 2Peter 3:13; Revelation 21-22), this current life is still Operation Relentless Rescue.

Observe. Think! Analyze. Be aware. Do you truly believe that the temptations which come your way are merely coincidental? Is it possible that Satan knows your selfish desires? Do they seem too subtle to be certain? The physical enemy plants physical mines where there is a likelihood for people to travel; likewise, spiritual mines are also planted in places where people frequently travel through life.

Like the birds in the 2003 movie, Finding Nemo, many people scream, “Mine! Mine! Mine!” Many people are so accustomed to saying, “mine” for selfish reasons that when the word is heard, they believe the word to be a proclamation of possession. Like many people, I am also screaming, “Mine!”; however, I am screaming for your sake, not mine. Consider this message of mine to be yet another warning. This is just one of many warnings I will preach.

Our culture that is contaminated by corruption of the Counterfeiter has planted millions of mines within our advertisement and entertainment industries (see my article, “Reflection and Direction“). Be careful: these mines look like your desires. All mines are strategically placed around sex, money, title/position, stimulants, and material possessions. Why do you think this would be so? Well, Jesus told us the answer:

“Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
(Matthew 26:41) -ESV

Those who work in the entertainment and advertisement industries know that the flesh is weak – that’s why they promote their products in the appealing ways that they do! We must put on the shoes of readiness and watch our steps or we will find that we won’t even have a leg to stand on. We better watch our steps or we will lose our way. If we’re not careful, we’ll not only lose a limb or life, but we can also lose our purpose and then our eternal joy in Heaven will instead be eternal sorrow and anguish in Hell. Consider the wisdom of what is written:

“For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?”
(Matthew 16:26) -ESV

“There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.”
(Proverbs 14:12) -NASB

  • It may be tempting to allow the anger within to explode outward, but do not sin in your anger (Genesis 4:5-7; Ephesians 4:26-27). #Mine 💣💥
  • It may be tempting to puff up with pride, but don’t walk into anger, step into that argument, and allow poisonous words to spill out from your mouth (Ephesians 4:29-31). #Mine 💣💥
  • It may be tempting to see if the grass is greener on the other side, but don’t walk over boundaries and step into another person’s romantic relationship (Exodus 20:17; Deuteronomy 5:21). #Mine 💣💥
  • It may be tempting to get credit and receive praise for something you didn’t do, but don’t walk into dishonesty and dishonor by stepping into another person’s place of honor (Proverbs 3:27; Romans 12:10; Philippians 2:3). #Mine 💣💥
  • It may be tempting to immerse yourself in the entrancement of technology, but don’t walk into a dead end by stepping into isolation (Genesis 2:18; Ecclesiastes 4:9-12; Proverbs 18:1; 1Corinthians 12:14). #Mine 💣💥
  • It may be tempting to exchange personal information for the sake of friendship, but don’t walk down Disrespectful Drive or Slander Street by stepping into the realm of gossip (Exodus 23:1; Leviticus 19:16; Proverbs 11:12-13; 20:19; James 4:11). #Mine 💣💥
  • It may be tempting to compromise an area of Truth to experience ‘fun’ or receive pleasure, but do not walk into disobedience to seek temporary desires that never fulfill. Never make a permanent decision based on a temporary emotion. Don’t trade away GOD’s lifelong gift to satisfy a short-term appetite (Genesis 25:29-34; Hebrews 12:16-17; 2Samuel 11-13). #Mine 💣💥
  • It may be tempting to escape suffering and sorrow, but do not walk down Evil Lane and step into the entrapment of drugs. Don’t walk into that store and step your way into becoming a drunken fool. #Mine 💣💥
  • It may be temping to risk everything you currently have in order to attain everything you desire, but don’t step away from responsibility by stepping into unrealistic odds that are not in your favor#Mine 💣💥
  • It may be tempting to escape the pain in life by ending your life, but do not walk into the possibility of Hell by stepping your way into suicide#Mine 💣💥

Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”
(1Corinthians 10:12-13) -ESV

Advance Forward:

The spikes on the bottom of the shoes isn’t only for standing your ground and refusing to be pushed back, it’s also for traction in order to gain ground and advance forward. Are you taking ground or losing ground? In Joshua 1:3, GOD told Joshua that he would possess all the land he walked on. GOD freely gave the children of Israel the Promised Land; however, in order for them to possess that land and enjoy it, they had to advance forward while overcoming opposition. It is written in Romans 16:20 that “The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.” The word “crush” is taken from the Greek word suntribo, and it was historically used to denote the act of smashing and utterly crushing grapes into wine. But it was also used to denote the act of snapping, breaking, and crushing bones. Because of Jesus, Satan is under our feet. Alone, we are no match for Satan. But because we have partnership with the Lord, we can overcome. Jesus completely destroyed Satan’s power over you through His sacrificial death and resurrection. Standing in faith is a defensive move and a refusal to go back; walking with the Lord is an offensive move and a decision to advance forward. And because we walk in the confidence and peace of knowing this, it’s time to advance forward and walk with purpose.

Walking With Purpose:

It is good to be able to dodge danger and evade evil, but that does not mean that we should avoid the adversary or stay away from sinners. Superheroes do not run away from problems; rather, they embrace their callings and seek solutions.

And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. Whoever says ‘I know him’ but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.”
(1John 2:3-6) -ESV

Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’ ”
(Matthew 28:16-20) -ESV

Wherever Jesus had directed the disciples to go, they went there. The shoes of readiness help us to dodge danger and evade evil; however, the shoes of readiness also guide us to walk with purpose. Our purpose for walking by faith is to share the Gospel (good news). If your feet don’t take you out of your comfort zone and into the battlefield, then you’re not wearing the shoes of readiness. The Couch Potato Christians might as well wear ankle monitors and consider themselves prisoners of their own probations.

When Saul of Tarsus became Paul, Jesus helped him to realize that he had been blind to the Truth all along (Acts 9:3-19). From this, we can learn that without Jesus, we are all dead in our own sins (Ephesians 2:1-3). The Lord is the Light (John 8:12) and the only reason we have sight (Isaiah 42:16; Ephesians 2:4-9). Without Jesus to give us vision, we would all be blind darkness dwellers. Without GOD as the Light that guides our steps (Psalm 119:105), we would all be the blind leading the blind (Matthew 15:14; Luke 6:39). But because Jesus called us out of the darkness and into the Light (Colossians 1:13), we became the light-bearers (John 9:5; Matthew 5:14-16; Ephesians 5:8; 1Thessalonians 5:5; 1Peter 2:9) who act as travel guides. Just as tourists typically follow tour guides until they reach their destinations, the “lost” only follow Christians until they come to Jesus. People ultimately follow Christ, not Christians. But as light-bearing guides, we must put on the shoes of readiness if we are to lead those in the dark to the Light. Don’t walk in the darkness without your shoes on; don’t go into the battlefield with bare feet. Are your shoes on? Are you ready?

How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!’ ”
(Romans 10:14-15; see also Isaiah 52:7) -ESV

Prayer:

GOD, thank You for the shoes of readiness You gave to us. Please open our eyes and help us to see what You truly want us to see. Expose the lies and reveal the Truth! Please open our ears and help us to hear what You truly want us to hear. Help us to recognize the ‘mines’ for what they truly are. Help us to walk the straight and narrow path of righteousness (Proverbs 4:25-27; Isaiah 30:21; Deuteronomy 5:32-33; Matthew 7:13-14) and keep us from deviating from the path of Truth. And when we encounter the ‘mines,’ please help us recognize the path of escape that you promised to provide (1Corinthians 10:13). Please lead righteous people our way and surround us with good and righteous influences who will keep us accountable and inspire us to rise to new and higher levels in our lives of faith. Please use us to guide others away from the destructive ‘mines’ of the adversary’s mind. Please help us to guide the lost to the One who can save. I humbly recognize that if You had not given me vision, I would still be blind. Help me lead others to You so that You may heal them of their blindness, open their eyes and help them to see — truly see! Help me to be a bright light in the darkness of this world. Help me to provide my light to those without sight so they may find their way Home. Help me to give light to those without light so they can also go shine their lights and help others acquire light. A candle was designed to provide light. A candle can either refuse to be lit and remain a mere candle all its inactive days or it can accept the fire of the Holy Spirit and provide light as it was designed to do! I understand that as I provide light, my life will dwindle down to nothing, but in doing so I will truly live (John 11:25-26). And truly, I’d rather live than merely exist. It is better to sink while sailing for the Savior than to forever float in Hinder Harbor, tied to the devil’s dock.

GOD, I am only another mere candle creation, but please help me light as many other candles as possible before my time ends. Please guide our steps to be in step with Your perfect will. Amen.

Superhero: The Struggle Is Real

If you would rather read this message, the words are provided below…

This is Part 12 of my Superhero series.

In this message (Part 12), we will see that the struggle is real; however, Jesus is the real solution to our real problems.

We all have real problems because we are real people and all people are finite and fallible beings who falter, flounder, and even fail at times. No one is perfect. In fact, GOD’s Word tells us that we are born into sin; we are sinners and have fallen short of the glory of GOD (Genesis 6:5; Psalm 51:5; Ecclesiastes 7:20; Romans 3:9-18,23; 5:12; Ephesians 2:3; 1John 1:8,10). Superheroes do not allow pride to puff themselves up and fill their minds with a false proclamation of perfection. Not even Superman was perfect and superior in character quality. He had a mental weakness in that he needed his parents to help teach him work ethics and the absolute moral standard. But Superman also had a weakness to his physical abilities: kryptonite. In fact, all superheroes have problems because all superheroes have weaknesses. Iron Man battled against pride due to his intellect, but he also battled depression and had heart complications. Both Batman and Spider-Man suffered through the loss of a loved one and they get mentally drained and physically fatigued after a period of time. Wolverine has to watch others grow old as he remains relatively the same, Rogue just wants to be able to cuddle or kiss someone without sucking the life out of him, and Professor Xavier can’t use his legs. In fact, most or all of the X-Men felt like they didn’t fit in with society. But aside from personal problems, superheroes must also face temptations just like anyone else.

Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away. These desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death.”
(James 1:14-15) -NLT

Real Problems:

“Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows.”
(John 16:33) -NLT

Remember this Scripture because we are going to return to this passage at the end of this message. Now, if fictional superheroes with superpowers are not impervious to evil’s attacks, why would humans be impervious to the enticements of Satan’s snares? The Bible records real people with real problems:

  • Adam and Eve were unable to resist temptation to be like GOD (Genesis 3:5-6);
  • Cain was unable to control his jealousy and anger and then murdered his brother Abel (Genesis 4:5-8);
  • Noah got drunk (Genesis 9:20-23);
  • Abraham and Sarah considered themselves to be too old (Genesis 17:17; 18:11-12);
  • Rebekah played favorites with her children (Genesis 25:28; 27:5-10);
  • Jacob was a liar and wrestled against GOD (Genesis 27:19-24; 32:24-32);
  • Leah was considered to be ugly (Genesis 29:17);
  • Dinah was raped (Genesis 34:2);
  • Joseph was sold into slavery by his own brothers (Genesis 37:18-36);
  • Moses murdered someone and also had a speech impediment (Exodus 2:11-12; 4:10);
  • Rahab was a prostitute (Joshua 2:1);
  • Gideon was afraid (Judges 6:15,22-23,27);
  • Samson was a cocky sinful womanizer (Judges 14-16);
  • Naomi was a widow (Ruth 1:3-5);
  • David was an adulterer and murderer (2Samuel 11);
  • David’s son (Amnon) raped David’s daughter (Tamar) and then David’s other son (Absalom) murdered Amnon (2Samuel 13);
  • Solomon was a sex-addict who allowed his body to be contaminated by sexual immorality and his heart to be corrupted by idolatry (1Kings 11);
  • Elijah was suicidal (1Kings 19:4);
  • Job lost his possessions and family (Job 1:13-19);
  • Jeremiah and Timothy were considered to be too young (Jeremiah 1:6-7; 1Timothy 4:12);
  • Hosea married an unfaithful prostitute (Hosea);
  • Jonah ran from GOD (Jonah 1:3);
  • John the Baptist wrestled with doubt (Matthew 11:2-3);
  • Martha worried about the nonessentials (Luke 10:41);
  • Zacchaeus was considered to be too short (Luke 19:3);
  • The Samaritan woman at the well had experienced divorce five times (John 4:16-17);
  • Saul (Paul) was too religious (Acts 7:54-58; 9:1-2; 23:6);
  • Peter denied Christ three times (John 18:15-18,25-27);
  • Thomas doubted Christ’s resurrection (John 20:24-25).

Real people have real problems. Whether it’s pride, laziness, anger, gossip, coping with change or conflict, doubt, fear, depression, suicide, personal addictions of gambling, drugs, alcoholpornographysexual immorality outside the bond of marriage, losing loved ones and dealing with death, or having specific doubts regarding the Bible, one thing is true for all: the struggle is real!

In a pluralistic, polytheistic, and relativistic society, Truth often gets painted over with a layer of lies to make for a convincing counterfeit. Personal problems plus a corrupt culture equals more problems. It is stressful for spiritual saints trying to survive within a secular and sinful society. If a sinful society becomes the standard of living, many Christians often compromise character and get contaminated in their desire to fit in with everyone else or appease the appetite of their desires.

Thus, real people have real problems; the struggle is real. But as we have already learned, superheroes are solution seekers. And where there is a struggle against sin or evil, there should also be a superhero striving to seek solutions that lead to salvation. So, what is the solution to our problems?

Real Solutions:

Remember, dear brothers and sisters, that few of you were wise in the world’s eyes or powerful or wealthy when God called you. Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful. God chose things despised by the world, things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important. As a result, no one can ever boast in the presence of God. God has united you with Christ Jesus. For our benefit God made him to be wisdom itself. Christ made us right with God; he made us pure and holy, and he freed us from sin. Therefore, as the Scriptures say, ‘If you want to boast, boast only about the Lord’ [Jeremiah 9:24].
(1Corinthians 1:26-31) -NLT

Rather than calling the qualified, GOD typically qualifies whom He calls. People have problems; people are not perfect. GOD knows this. But GOD is more than capable of helping us overcome our problems. How? The short answer is that the Solution is Jesus. The longer answer is that Jesus is the Word (John 1:1,14) and the Word provides us with all the necessary information we need to deal with our problems.

Superhero-Struggle-02

The perceived problem isn’t often the real problem we believe it to be. Often times, the problem is that Christians do not know the Word of GOD and are unable to access the emergency numbers of the Bible that will provide us with solutions. Remember: when Satan temped Jesus (Matthew/Luke 4), Jesus responded with, “It is written.” So, we need to know what is written. If you need a concordance or topical Bible to help you with specific concerns, then get those helpful tools. Seek out your solution! The goal is to absorb GOD’s Word. Once GOD’s Word is within you, the Holy Spirit can help you call to mind specific passages that would help with specific areas of concern. An example of an area of concern [that’s not listed on the above image] would be temptation. Is there ever a time when someone will not be able to overcome temptation? GOD’s Word provides us with answers:

“Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
(Matthew 26:41) -ESV

Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”
(1Corinthians 10:12-13) -ESV

When it comes to temptation, GOD always provides us with a way out so that we can escape. GOD never promised us a temptation-free life; rather, He promised us an escape so long as we seek Him. The way of escape is to know GOD’s Word, remain in GOD’s Word, and to live out GOD’s Word. If you want an escape, ask two questions:

  1. What does GOD say?
  2. What would Jesus do?

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”
(Romans 12:2) -ESV

Christians have problems, but we are not to allow those problems to define who we are or determine our direction. Superheroes have problems. Having problems doesn’t make you any less of a superhero; in fact, superheroes would not even be considered to be superheroes unless they were battling problems. We should thank GOD in advance for providing us with the opportunity to be an overcomer; we cannot develop into overcomers without having problems to overcome. But it’s important to remember that in our battles against evil, we need to run away from our temptations yet face our problems. Don’t get those two confused with each other. It’s important, so I’ll reiterate: run away from temptations but face problems.

We need to seek solutions rather than a scapegoat and join together as a team rather than feeling overwhelmed dealing with problems alone. And most importantly, we need to believe that GOD can help us with our problems. And if we use the Biblical emergency numbers, we can discover the specific solutions to our specific problems. It’s easy to complain about our problems, but we need to consider what GOD has said regarding those problems. Are we refusing to act, change, and do what GOD requires? Do we even take the advice He has already given to us? What has GOD told us to do? What would Jesus do? You may not receive new guidance from GOD until you have acted on His previous directions. And GOD has spoken:

And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me—everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.”
(Philippians 4:8-9) -NLT

GOD has already told us this. But are we listening? Are we obeying? People often desire for GOD to change their situations when GOD desires to change our hearts, minds, attitudes, and character qualities. Perhaps we need to change and grow in our attitude toward our problems.

“And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.”
(Romans 8:28) -NLT

GOD works in “everything” – not just isolated incidents – for our good. This does not mean that all that happens to us is good. Evil is prevalent in our fallen world and many people experience pain and suffering; however, GOD is able to turn every circumstance around for our good in the long run. This is the Great Reversal. Note that GOD is not working to make us happy but to fulfill purpose. Note also that this promise is not for everyone. It can be claimed only by those who love GOD and are called by Him. Such people have a new perspective, a new state of mind. They trust in GOD and their treasure is in Heaven and not on Earth (Matthew 6:19-21). Their faith in GOD does not waver in pain and persecution because they know GOD is with them and GOD is for them. And if GOD is for us, who can be against us (Romans 8:31)?

Trials may be a part of GOD’s plan for believers. I believe they are. Experiencing problems and persecutions can build character (James 1:2-4), perseverance (Romans 5:3-5), and sensitivity toward others who also face trouble (2Corinthians 1:3-7). Problems are unavoidable for GOD’s people. Consider this: your troubles may be a sign of effective Christian living. That’s a good thing. If you’re not targeted by the enemy, he doesn’t consider you much of a threat. If you’re comfortable, you might want to ask yourself why you’re so comfortable. If the Adversary is leaving you alone, there’s probably a reason for that. Consider this: the problems you encounter just might be because you are a superhero and the enemy wants to take you out. Therefore, consider it all joy and endure until the end.

This message began with John 16:33 informing us that we will have problems in this life; however, the passage was taken out of its context. Now examine the Scripture in its proper context:

“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”
(John 16:33) -NLT

Yes – we will have problems, but Jesus has also told us to take heart. Understand this: we already know the ending of this story: Jesus returns, and all evildoers will come under judgment and go into eternal separation and all believers will dwell with Him for eternity in eternal joy (Revelation 21-22). Superheroes have problems, but they also have a Savior who quarantines the problems. Take heart! Jesus saved the world! Heaven awaits the arrival of the righteous. We are the Righteous League! Sure – the struggle is real, but our Savior is real and salvation is real.

When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished, saying, ‘Who then can be saved?’ But Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.’ ”
(Matthew 19:25-26) -ESV

After all, Jesus is the Savior. Jesus is the Solution. Superheroes have problems. And that’s okay. Because superheroes are solution seekers and more than conquerors in Christ

Is Gambling A Sin?

Someone wrote to me and asked, “Do you think gambling is lawlessness? Playing poker at a casino, etc.”

Well, before we determine whether gambling is or is not lawlessness or a sin, we must first define our terms. What is lawlessness? What is sin? What is gambling? Only after our terms are defined will we know if gambling is lawlessness or a sin.

What is lawlessness?:

As I discuss in my article, “I Never Knew You,” the word “lawlessness” is the Greek word [458] anomia (an-om-ee’-ah), which is a compounded word of the alpha [1] a (ah), which means “no,” “not,” or “without,” and [3551] nomos (nom’-os), which means the commandments, the Mosaic Law, and the Old Testament scriptures in general. And so anomia means a person of iniquity, a person who possesses no fixed moral standard. It is the wickedness of living contrary to the knowledge of the Law. And according to Matthew 13:41, these are the unrighteous and evil tares who will get gathered and thrown into the fire.

What is sin?:

The Hebrew word for “sin” is [2403] chatta’ah (khat-taw-aw’), which is an offense or wrongdoing, something that demands a penalty. The Greek word for “sin” is [266] hamartia (ham-ar-tee’-ah), which is a compounded word of the alpha [1] a (ah), which means “no,” “not,” or “without,” and [3313] meros (mer’-os), which means a part, portion, or share. And so as a verb, this word literally means “to miss the mark”; consequently, so as to not share in the prize or get a section, allotment, or portion. And so both the Hebrew and Greek’s basic nuance of this word means missing the road or missing the mark. It is for this reason that sin is described in the Bible as transgression of the Law of GOD (1John 3:4) and rebellion against GOD (Deuteronomy 9:7; Joshua 1:18). And this is why sin can be described as departing from the “the way” in that the person misses the mark and travels down the wrong road. It is for this reason Proverbs 3:5-7 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and turn away from evil.” And Proverbs 4:27 says, “Do not turn to the right nor to the left; turn your foot from evil.” And it is for this reason Jesus said in Matthew 7:13-14, “Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.” Therefore, sin is the overall the failure to conform to GOD’s Law in thought, feeling, attitude, word, action, orientation, or nature.

And so we need to investigate what gambling entails so we will be able to discern if it is living contrary to the knowledge of the Law, missing the mark, and going down the wrong road.

What is gambling?:

According to Dictionary.com, “gambling” is “the act or practice of risking the loss of something important by taking a chance or acting recklessly.” And “gamble” is “staking or risking money, or anything of value, on the outcome of something involving chance.”

Is gambling lawlessness and/or sin?:

If gambling is viewed as entertainment and is kept in moderation, is it really any different from other activities that waste our money? Isn’t “responsible gambling” the same as spending a bit too much money on video games, seeing a movie at the theater, eating unnecessarily expensive meals, or purchasing unnecessary items that tend to clutter our homes? Well, gambling can definitely be viewed as another avenue of wasting money; however, it is different than most unnecessary purchases and entertainment choices for a few reasons.

As I described in an article I published a long time ago, casinos are rigged; they use a variety of marketing schemes to entice gamblers to risk as much money as possible. They often offer inexpensive or even free alcohol, which encourages drunkenness, and thereby a decreased ability to make wise decisions. Everything in a casino is perfectly rigged for receiving money in large sums and giving almost nothing in return, except for fleeting and empty pleasures. An examination of any random state’s department of revenue for casinos is quite revealing – billions of dollars comes in and not much money goes out. Gambling expenditures is around $500+ billion per year – that’s more money than Americans spend per year on films, books, amusements, and music entertainment combined!

Lotteries attempt to portray themselves as a way to fund education and/or social programs. However, studies show that lottery participants are usually those who can least afford to be spending money on lottery tickets. The allure of “getting rich quick” is often too great a temptation to resist for those who are desperate. Unfortunately, the chances of winning are infinitesimal and almost impossible. The end result is that people ultimately lose their money that they could have otherwise saved or invested into another purpose.

However, many people claim that they gamble or play the lottery so that they can give the money to the church or to some other good cause. So, can gambling proceeds please GOD? While this may be a good motive, the reality is that few people actually use gambling winnings for righteous purposes. Studies reveal that the vast majority of lottery winners are in an even worse financial situation a few years after winning a jackpot than they had been before they won all the money. But why is that? Let’s face it – money doesn’t change a person’s character; rather, money ultimately amplifies a person’s character. If a person isn’t a good steward with a little amount, the person won’t be a good steward with a large amount.

In Luke 16:10-13 (NLT), it is written, “If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities. And if you are untrustworthy about worldly wealth, who will trust you with the true riches of heaven? And if you are not faithful with other people’s things, why should you be trusted with things of your own? No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.”

We are all called to be good stewards with all that has been given to us. According to Dictionary.com, a steward is “a person who manages another’s property or financial affairs; one who administers anything as the agent of another or others.”

As Christians, we are merely managing what GOD has allowed to be in our care. A prominent principle that permeates the Bible is stewardship. The Bible repeatedly and consistently paints the picture that GOD is the ultimate owner of everything and we are merely stewards for the time being (Job 1:21; Psalm 24:1; 49:17; 89:11; Ecclesiastes 5:15; Luke 12:42; 1Corinthians 4:1-2; 1Timothy 6:7). We are all called to be stewards of the Gospel that Jesus has entrusted to us through the command of the great commission (Matthew 28:16-20). But in addition to that, we are all to be good stewards of everything the Lord has given to us or provided for us. We are all called to live a disciplined life (Romans 8:9; 1Corinthians 9:27; Galatians 5:22-23; 2Timothy 1:7; Titus 1:7-8; Hebrews 12:11). One of the fruits of the Spirit is that we will live with self-control. And while living a disciplined life, we are to live a life of love toward others.

What is right?:

If we are to find out if gambling is wrong, we need to know what is right; we will know what is wrong if we know what is right. Out of all the supposed 613 commandments, Jesus gave us the greatest commandment (and a second that is like it):

It is written in Matthew 22:37-40: “And He said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the great and foremost commandment. The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.”

So, are we loving GOD when we gamble?:

Christians are not to allow their minds or bodies to be mastered by anything other than the Holy Spirit (1Corinthians 6:12) – anything else leads to idolatry. It is for this reason it is written in Romans 12:1-2, “present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.” And if you don’t believe you are mastered by anything, I challenge you to ponder on what thoughts determine your actions. In John 8:34, Jesus said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin.” That which you cannot walk away from has ownership over you. If you are unable to release your hatred toward others, you are a slave to sin. Even if you are unable to walk away from something seemingly insignificant such as a cigarette, you are a slave to the desire. Truly, people are slaves to anger, pride, jealousy, pornography, greed, promiscuity, alcohol, drugs, and many other things. Therefore, motive most certainly matters. If you find yourself in a casino, why are you there?

If we are to love GOD, then we should have faith that GOD will provide what we need, not necessarily what we want.

Hebrews 11:6 says, “without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.” Further, Matthew 6:24-34 teaches us that our trust should be in GOD as our Provider and we should not worry about our provision because GOD will provide.

GOD rewards those who seek Him. We are to be seeking the Lord, not money. Money is not the solution to all of our problems; our Savior is the Source and the solution. Many people might raise an objection to this and say, “People gotta eat and you need money to eat!” But don’t forget what is written: we do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord (Deuteronomy 8:3; Matthew 4:4). GOD’s Word alone is the sustenance for the soul. Do you trust GOD? After all, faith entails trust and we should trust in the Lord with all our hearts (Proverbs 3:5-7). If we trust in the Lord, we can be content in all circumstances, whether we have a little or a lot (Philippians 4:11-13). But gambling feeds covetousness, which is the opposite of GOD’s call to be content.

The Voice translation paraphrases 2Thessalonians 3:10-12 this way: “This is exactly why, while with you, we commanded you: ‘Anyone not willing to work shouldn’t get to eat!’ You see, we are hearing that some folks in the community are out of step with our teaching; they are idle, not working, but really busy doing nothing—and yet still expect to be fed! If this is you or someone else in the community, we insist and urge you in the Lord Jesus the Anointed that you go to work quietly, earn your keep, put food on your own table, and supply your own necessities.”

In short, we’ve got work to do. There are no shortcuts to success in life. Gambling is risking losing your money on a chance to receive everyone else’s money without working for the money. In essence, the gambler wants something for nothing. But there’s one major problem with this scenario: luck does not exist. Humans — in alignment with an evil agenda — have unfairly rigged the casinos and it is in favor of the house, not the gambler. Lotteries are designed to collect money. Chance without GOD is the personification of anarchy and nihilism. Everything not controlled by humankind is controlled by GOD. But GOD has allowed humans to have control in many areas of life due to our gift of free will. Sadly, gambling is one area of life where humans have control; those in control have set up the odds in their favor and they are only taking advantage of those who gamble.

Are we loving others when we gamble?:

You can choose to believe this or not, but we don’t need a fortune to be able to love people.

Acts 3:1-10 is a fitting and powerful example of this! It is written, “Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the ninth hour, the hour of prayer. And a man who had been lame from his mother’s womb was being carried along, whom they used to set down every day at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, in order to beg alms of those who were entering the temple. When he saw Peter and John about to go into the temple, he began asking to receive alms. But Peter, along with John, fixed his gaze on him and said, ‘Look at us!’ And he began to give them his attention, expecting to receive something from them. But Peter said, ‘I do not possess silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you: In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene—walk!’ And seizing him by the right hand, he raised him up; and immediately his feet and his ankles were strengthened. With a leap he stood upright and began to walk; and he entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God. And all the people saw him walking and praising God; and they were taking note of him as being the one who used to sit at the Beautiful Gate of the temple to beg alms, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.”

Peter didn’t have money, but he gave the man what he had – the gift of Christ Jesus! We may not have a lot of money, but we are all capable of giving what we do have – the Good News (Gospel)! All miracles come from GOD! Are miracles possible? Absolutely! Yes! If GOD exists, miracles are possible. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). But winning money from the lottery or casinos is not a miracle. It’s odds. Amazing? Yes. Exciting? Yes. Miracle? No. It’s a numbers game and the odds are set up for you to lose.

As previously mentioned, expenditures on gambling are around $500+ billion every year. What could that amount of money do to help the poor, widows, orphans, or those who are sick? Imagine the good, wholesome projects that could be supported by such an enormous amount of money for an annual budget. How many people could be fed? How many shelters could be built? How many water wells could be provided? How many missions could be funded to preach the Gospel? How many churches could be planted? How many Bibles could be printed and given out? Instead of such worthwhile projects, however, these billions of dollars are dumped into a system that leads to addiction and abuse. While casinos collect billions of dollars, preying on people for greedy profit, I can’t even convince people to sow $20 into the ministry so I can continue to share the good news of the Gospel! Therefore, it would be difficult, indeed, to conclude that gambling is good stewardship of the money with which GOD has entrusted a person. In reality, to pour one’s money into a system that mathematically and statistically has been proven, time and time again, to benefit the “house,” and take from the gambler, certainly would fall into the category of unfaithful stewardship.

While the Bible doesn’t specifically condemn gambling, it does warn us to stay away from the love of money (Matthew 6:24; 1Timothy 6:10; Hebrews 13:5) and to avoid “get rich quick” schemes (Proverbs 13:11; 23:5; Ecclesiastes 5:10). Furthermore, we are encouraged to use our financial resources to minister to people in need and to advance the Kingdom of GOD, not store up treasure for ourselves here on this earth (Matthew 6:19-21; Luke 12:15-21).

Ponder on the widow who gave her last coins in faith to GOD as her Provider (Mark 12:41-44), and the early Christians who donated their money and goods to the church (Acts 4:32-37). As it turns out, I wrote an article on this: “Everything.” Since gambling glorifies the love of money, tempts us with dreams of getting rich quickly, sets up odds that heavily favor the house and not the gambler, and tempts us to direct our money toward frivolous earthly hopes instead of causes that help people in need and whatever advances the Gospel, gambling is clearly an activity Christians should avoid. Think about this: gambling is a celebration of receiving all that others have lost. But life isn’t about what we can receive. Jesus told us that it is better to give than receive (Acts 20:35). But who are we giving to if we are using our money for gambling?

Proverbs 28:20 says, “A faithful man will abound with blessings, but he who makes haste to be rich will not go unpunished.”

But… but… but what about the casting of lots, which is described several times in the Bible? Isn’t that a form of gambling? Well, the Bible does not describe the specific method of casting lots, but it seems to have been similar to drawing straws or throwing dice. Interestingly, GOD sometimes used this ancient practice as a means of showing His will. Aaron was instructed to choose between the sacrificial goat and the scapegoat by casting lots (Leviticus 16). Joshua cast lots to divide land among seven tribes (Joshua 18). The Israelites returning from Babylon cast lots to determine who got to live within the walls of rebuilt Jerusalem (Nehemiah 11). Even the apostles of Christ cast lots to determine who would replace Judas as the twelfth apostle (Acts 1). How can this sort of activity identify GOD’s will if it is based on chance outcomes? That’s a fair question. However, the Bible says the outcomes were not left to chance: Proverbs 16:33 says, “The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord.”

First, casting lots is not staking or risking money or anything of great value on the uncertain outcome. And the desired outcome is not a celebration of gaining what everyone has lost.  Therefore, casting lots was not the same thing as gambling. Rather, it was an acceptable way to discern GOD’s will in the era before the Holy Spirit was given to believers. Casting lots never occurred again after the Holy Spirit was given to believers. And this is why casting lots should not be regarded as an acceptable means of discovering GOD’s will in this present day – we have the whole Bible plus the Holy Spirit to guide us.

Summary:

Casinos, lotteries, and gambling websites all aim to take your money – that is the goal and they are obviously achieving that goal. After all, they are businesses whose aim is to make money, and thus they scheme to get you to risk as much as possible so that you may lose as much as possible and they can gain as much as possible. If that weren’t the ultimate end goal, they wouldn’t rake in billions of dollars like they do. I urge you to resist the temptation to chase “get rich quick” schemes. At the very least, gambling will lead to loss; however, gambling possesses the potential to ruin lives. GOD gives people time, talent, and treasure with an expectation of accountability (“Burying The Talent”). So, what are you doing with all that GOD has given you?

Conclusion:

Gambling is first and foremost a moral issue. There was a time in American society when the majority of people revered GOD’s absolute moral standard and considered such things as promiscuity, abortion, homosexuality, drunkenness, cursing, pornography, and gambling to be wrong. Obviously, times, circumstances, and culture have changed, but they have not changed for the better. GOD and His Word is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). A genuine Christian is the one who eliminates from daily life the vice and immorality that is characteristic of a corrupt and contaminated culture that continually desires to abandon GOD’s will in favor of the standards of a sick and sinful society. Instead of joining a sinful society, we need to study GOD’s Word in order to learn how GOD desires us to live. We should not be followers of the faithless; instead, we need to be leaders of love.

Rather than asking if gambling is wrong, we need to seek the Lord and know what is right. Just as it is written in Micah 6:8, GOD has already told us what is right. We need to keep our focus on what is right. We are to love GOD and to love others. We need to earn our money and then be good stewards of what we do have by using it wisely to love GOD and to love others. If we are not good stewards with what GOD has given us, we’re not loving GOD as we should. If we’re throwing away money to businesses whose aim is to take advantage of people, then we’re not using that money to love others. The bottom line is that lotteries, casinos, and other ways of gambling are merely clever ways of stealing from the general population.

Gambling is a spiritual and financial timebomb in a pretty package, and no demographic group is immune to the social pathologies associated with it. Gambling associates itself with a number of problems, including alcohol and drug abuse, prostitution, sex trafficking, violent crime, embezzlement and bankruptcy, theft, spouse and child abuse, and even pornography and obscenity. This is why gambling is not a “victimless crime.” What appears to be harmless entertainment with the investment of one’s own money becomes a destructive and costly influence on the person and the community as a whole (Proverbs 14:12-13). The gambling industry is by nature parasitical and predatory.

Mark Twain once shrewdly observed that “the best throw at dice is to throw them away.” But don’t take Mark Twain’s word as the final authority on the matter. In fact, it doesn’t even matter what I say about this matter. What matters is GOD’s Word. But clearly, GOD’s Word tells us that gambling is wrong because it is not in alignment with GOD’s absolute moral standard of what is right. I believe GOD’s Word makes it evident that gambling is living contrary to the knowledge of the Law, missing the mark, and going down the wrong road. I challenge you to be a good steward with what GOD has given you and to use it to love GOD and to love others.

Are you gambling more than you intend to risk? A person choosing to live a life out of alignment with GOD’s absolute moral standard is a person gambling with his/her eternity. I challenge you to consider all that you gamble with every choice you make. I also challenge you to read another other article I published, “Subtle,” and examine the subtlety of sin. I bet you’re gambling more than you intend to risk.

Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

In John 14:15, Jesus says, “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.” So, what are His commandments? What is Christ telling us to do? As it turns out, I wrote an article on that: “My Commandments

The Heart Is The Start

When meeting someone for the first time, one of the first (if not the first) questions people usually ask is, “What do you do for a living?”

Many people try to identify others by the things they do or the way they look instead of seeing them for who they truly are, what they care about, and who they are striving to become. I believe it is more important to know who a person is striving to become than to know what it is that person currently does. Truly, the heart should be the start because what’s important is hidden within and often remains unseen.

And so, we are going to play a game. I am going to describe to you seven different people. As I am describing these people to you, I want you to try to imagine what each person looks like. First, imagine whether the person is male or female. After you assume the gender of the person, I want you to imagine the age, height, and weight of the person. I want you to also imagine if the person has a lot of facial hair or if the person is clean shaven. Imagine the person’s skin tone, hair color and even the eye color. Does the person have freckles? Does the person have scars? What clothing would the person be wearing? After I describe all seven individuals, I will reveal the identity of each person.

Take out a piece of paper, a writing utensil, and write the numbers one through seven going down. Write your guess after reading each description. The answers will follow. (Let me know if you guessed any correctly, and if so, how many.)

The Descriptions:

(1) This person had a sister and a brother who both died at an early age. Not too much longer after the death of both siblings, this person’s mother also died. This person eventually became a part-owner of a store, but the business failed. This person studied law. This person eventually fell in love; however, this person’s love interest also eventually died. With only two saddlebags to hold all of this person’s possessions, this person moved to a new city to live in at the age of 28. This person eventually got into politics. This person ran for president year after year and got rejected year after year; however, this person finally got elected as the president of the United States at the age of 52.

(2) This person was born in 1929. This person lived in a confined space with many other people and felt as if the atmosphere was suffocating at times. At the age of only 15, this person got arrested. At the young age of 16, this person died from typhoid fever; in addition, all family members with the exception of the father ended up dying.

(3) This person was born in Australia. As a child, this person struggled mentally, emotionally, and even physically. At one point, this person considered suicide. At the age of 21, this person graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce and with a double major in accountancy and financial planning. This person is now a Christian evangelist and motivational speaker.

(4) This person was one of eight siblings and was also the runt of the litter. Being the smallest, this person was sent to watch over sheep rather than being in war or hunting. On one occasion, a special visitor came to the father and desired to choose one of the siblings for a special task and rare position. But on this occasion, this person was excluded from the other siblings and wasn’t even presented as a choice to the special visitor. Neither the father nor the siblings thought very much of this person.

(5) This person dressed with clothing that proclaims importance and that is because this person possesses an important title or position. This person was one of the few who comprised the ruling class in the area. This person was a successful person by human standards. However, this person eventually caused an innocent and much loved man to receive a death sentence and was later despised because of it.

(6) This person grew up agnostic and eventually became a performer in Hollywood for the entertainment industry and had been in dozens of television shows. This person became a nihilistic atheist whose only concern was experiencing fun. Sadly, this person’s nihilism brought this person to write out a suicide letter, considering everything in life to be worthless and meaningless — even life itself. After failing to commit suicide, this person eventually left the entertainment industry and ended  up receiving unemployment checks until working such jobs as a janitor for an elementary school and as a groundskeeper for an apartment community. By the world’s standards, this person became a failure and an insignificant and invisible nobody.

(7) As a baby, this person was born in a dirty place where animals typically go to eat. There never seemed to be anything remarkable about this person; in fact, this person worked an ordinary job as a typical carpenter. When this person was around 30 years of age, this person went above and beyond to love people. And yet despite of this person’s great love, this person was condemned to a death sentence on false accusations and died a horrible death. People mocked this person as this person died.

The Revealing:

(1) It was only after years of rejection and ‘failure’ that this man succeeded. That man was Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln signed the first of the Homestead acts, allowing poor people to own land. He also established the United States Department of Agriculture, he signed the Morrill Land-Grant Act which led to creation of numerous universities, and he also issued the Emancipation Proclamation which led to abolishing slavery in US.

(2) The young girl named Anne Frank eventually went on to inspire millions of people despite the fact that she wasn’t even alive here on Earth. Her father (only remaining family member) found Anne’s diary, was amazed by her maturity and character and then got it published. Anne provided wonderful insight into a dark moment of history inundated with Nazis and also showed the world that maturity can be found in youth and a hero can look like a female.

(3) This person is Nick Vujicic; he was born with tetra-amelia syndrome, a rare disorder characterized by the absence of all four limbs. Nick has encouraged, motivated and inspired millions of people simply because he overcame and never quit. Though he lives a life without limbs, his heart propels him in the direction he needs to go.

(4) This person is the great David of the Bible. Though no one else thought much of David because of his appearance, GOD saw David’s heart and it looked like a lampstand ready to shine GOD’s light. Before Samuel anointed David as the king who would replace Saul, Samuel saw David’s brother and thought he would be king because of his appearance. But examine GOD’s response:

“When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, ‘Surely the Lord’s anointed is before him.’ But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.’ ”
(1Samuel 16:6-7) -ESV

(5) This person is one of the many Pharisees whom Jesus opposed and often rebuked. These are the people who seemed like they had it all together and were doing everything right! Though the Pharisees had the appearance of importance and right character, they lacked heart. Examine the words of Jesus regarding the Pharisees:

“Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, ‘The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat, so do and observe whatever they tell you, but not the works they do. For they preach, but do not practice. They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger. They do all their deeds to be seen by others…. Woe to you, blind guides…. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness. So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness…. You serpents, you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to hell?”
(Matthew 23:1-5, 16, 27-28, 33) -ESV

(6) This person is me, Trenton Gill. Worthless and meaningless is how I saw myself. Yet somehow, GOD saw in me the goodness I never saw in myself. Jesus knew my good heart and He saved me from myself and helped me to repent (turn around) and start living a righteous life of servitude that gives praise to GOD rather than the superficial life that would receive praise from people.

(7) This person is Christ Jesus. Jesus — fully GOD — became fully human in order to save us from ourselves. By His great sacrificial love, our bloodstained sinful selves have been whitewashed and cleansed and we will be able to live in His presence for all eternity.

When I described each person, did the physical appearance ever make a difference as to who they ended up becoming? Did age or gender make a difference? Did all of their ‘current’ jobs, tasks, labels or titles ever define who they would end up becoming? Did their history of whatever they lacked ever define who they would eventually become? No. Who you are right now can change so long as you possess the desire to change and put forth the effort and never quit.

Therefore, if you’re reading this and we don’t know each other, I will not risk shaming you by asking you what you do for a living. What you currently do is sometimes irrelevant to who you are and who you will become. After all, the famous rocker, Jon Bon Jovi, was a janitor before he became famous and eventually helped out with different charities. There’s something more important I want to ask you than what you do for a living: “Who are you and who are you striving to become?”

Share with me the following:

  • What are your short-term and long-term goals?
  • What are your dreams?
  • What do you care about most in life?
  • Where do you want to end up in the near future and distant future?
  • Who do you want to become?
  • After you leave Earth and go into eternity, what do you want to leave behind for everyone else still living on Earth?

You can be the person you desire to be; you can be the person you dream to be. Do you know your identity? Dare to dream! Vision and belief that are united with wisdom leads to possibility; possibility harbors potential; therefore, full potential is only possible with vision and belief. Do you believe? How is your faith?

“Jesus told them. ‘I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, “Move from here to there,” and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.’ ”
(Matthew 17:20) -NLT

“The Lord answered, ‘If you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, “May you be uprooted and thrown into the sea,” and it would obey you!’ ”
(Luke 17:6) -NLT

“I can do everything through Christ who strengthens me.”
(Philippians 4:13) -GW

“Jesus looked at them intently and said, ‘Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But with God everything is possible.’ ”
(Matthew 19:26) -NLT

Through Christ, you can accomplish anything so long as it is in alignment with GOD’s will. Again, I want to ask you a very important question: who are you and who are you striving to become? You need to know your identity.

“But Amos stood up to Amaziah: ‘I never set up to be a preacher, never had plans to be a preacher. I raised cattle and I pruned trees. Then GOD took me off the farm and said, “Go preach to my people Israel.”’ ”
(Amos 7: 14-15) -MSG

Scripture states that Amaziah was a priest and Amos was a shepherd. Amaziah basically told Amos not to preach in Bethel because it offended him and others.

I can relate to Amos quite well because I have told many people the same message and many people have responded by telling me the same thing that Amos heard. I never set up to be a preacher; I never had plans of being a preacher. Amos was a shepherd. I was an atheist actor in the entertainment industry with aspirations of fame and fortune. I had my sights set on money. But my desires and my title changed after I found my identity. And many people often tell me not to preach because my words sometimes offends people. It saddens me that people would get offended by Truth, but I must rank truth as more important than feelings. And it’s not my Truth to change. I didn’t write the Book of Truth, I merely share the message. I’m a messenger.

Pastor, teacher, or messenger — titles are irrelevant to GOD’s calling and are obsolete in Heaven. Titles are created by humans to accommodate human agenda; moreover, titles are not indicative of the true calling and cannot change the character of any human. As of right now — November 15, 2017 — I do not possess a certified title of pastor or minister; however, the lack of an official title doesn’t take away from my calling. I will continue to fulfill my calling and eventually people will throw a title on me because of the way I’m living out my calling. Consider the following four examples:

(1) Albert Einstein failed an entrance examination for the school of ETH in Zurich, Switzerland. He didn’t have a title then, but GOD designed him to be a genius. Later in life, he was awarded a Ph.D., became a professor at Karl-Ferdinand University in Prague, became President of the German Physical Society, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics, and received the Copley Medal from the Royal Society. Einstein is proof that a ‘nobody’ can be a ‘somebody’ of great significance. Einstein’s wisdom would have helped the human race advance whether he acquired those titles or not. But he acquired those titles because he lived out his calling and then humans threw titles on him.

(2) Adolf Hitler was considered a great leader at one point, but his title didn’t alter the demonic demeanor within him. Hitler’s title labeled him to be a leader and respected ruler; however, his orders to his army brought about the deaths of millions of innocent people. Hitler’s earthly title amongst the nazis meant very little to the soldiers who opposed him; moreover, his title meant nothing in the big picture of eternity. The nazis called him Fuhrer, which meant, “leader.” But do you know what he is called in Heaven? Well, he isn’t called anything because he’s not in Heaven.

(3) Pastor Steve Fender from Livingway Church of San Antonio, Texas shared with me one of the most amazing testimonies I’ve ever heard. After an alter call at one of Steve’s services, a man by the name of Ernest had asked Steve to talk to him and pray with him. Eventually, Ernest confessed to being a Mexican mafia hitman and that he had killed a lot of people. Ernest asked if GOD would still accept him because of all the murders he had committed and Steve told Ernest that no one is too far gone to be saved. Pastor Steve asked Ernest to lift up his hands in surrender to GOD; Ernest told Steve that he would, but only if Steve would hold his shirt down so that no one would see his gun while his arms were up. Ernest — a hitman with a loaded gun in church service — gave his life to Christ that day and eventually led many other people to Christ. One day, Ernest was shot while walking the streets. When pastor Steve arrived at the scene, Ernest was face down on the ground, already dead. In Ernest’s hand appeared to be a gun; however, it was a copy of the New Testament. The world labeled Ernest as a murderer; Ernest proclaimed himself to be a murderer at one point; however, Ernest was made new in Christ and was called to be a preacher. Ernest’s title of ‘hitman’ wasn’t his true title. And once Ernest realized his real identity, he received his true calling and his true title. Repentance and faith bring salvation. Despite his past, Ernest was a preacher and that is how we should remember him.

(4) There are [far too] many people who earned the title of being a Priest, yet they were then later convicted and declared to be pedophiles.

There are some people who possess the title of ‘Priest’ (like Amaziah), yet their character proclaims them to be frauds and dirty — just like the Pharisees whom Jesus condemned. Amaziah was wrapped up in religion (rules, regulations, and rituals) and neglected to have a relationship with GOD.

Ponder on this: Jesus was wisdom in human form, yet He didn’t possess a Ph.D. Jesus didn’t need a P-H-D because he was with the title of G-O-D. His title was Messiah, or Christ, or Savior; however, He didn’t receive that title until after He already fulfilled the role. No one except His disciples gave Him the title of Messiah before His crucifixion. But the lack of the title didn’t take away from His calling.

Though the world tells us to take up titles, we are called to live the calling. Do not allow yourself to be beguiled by titles! Do not be fooled into believing you are who the world says you are! To fulfill your calling, you need only to look beyond the façade of worldly titles and possess zeal for the seal of GOD’s approval. The start is the heart!

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.”
(Psalm 51:10) -ESV

“And he called the people to him and said to them, ‘Hear and understand: it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.’…. But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander. These are what defile a person.’ ”
(Matthew 15:10-11, 18-20) -ESV

Amaziah was a Priest, yet GOD chose a shepherd (like David) named Amos to do the preaching of His Word. Amos made himself available to be used! If Amos was capable of caring for a herd and tending little details such as yard work [with honesty and integrity], then he could be trusted to do and say what was right – to preach. GOD basically said, “I don’t care that other humans label Amaziah as a Priest. Amos is my preacher.”

I challenge you to know your identity and pursue your calling rather than a title. Take action on what GOD has called you to do. If the world declares you to be nothing but a janitor yet GOD calls you to preach, then you’re a preacher! If the world declares you to be nothing but an old man (like Noah) yet GOD calls you to build an ark and protect the animals, then you’re a contractor, carpenter, soon-to-be sailor and captain, and wildlife preservationist! If the world declares you to be nothing but a tax collector yet GOD calls you to write a book, then you’re an author! Worldly titles mean nothing. Do not get so wrapped up in nothing that you end up missing out on everything GOD has for you. What is the true title you possess? Proclaim it in the name of Jesus Christ, by the power of GOD-Almighty! But know and understand that the heart is the start. In order to fulfill your calling, you need to purify and protect your heart. The reason David was chosen above all others was because he was a man after GOD’s own heart (1Samuel 13:14).

“But as for those whose heart goes after their detestable things and their abominations, I will bring their deeds upon their own heads, declares the Lord God.”
(Ezekiel 11:21) -ESV

But for those of us who desire to fulfill our true calling, all we need to do is ask Jesus to purify our hearts and align our thoughts with His will. By seeking first the Kingdom of GOD (GOD’s will), everything else will fall in place.

“And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.”
(Ezekiel 36:26-27) -ESV

“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you”
(Matthew 6:33) -ESV

Once purified, we must put on the breastplate of righteousness for protection (read Ephesians 6:10-20; see also Isaiah 59:17). Take note that the heart is protected by righteousness. A righteous life prevents the penetration of sin that desires to find its way in. Sin finding its way into the heart is like a sperm finding its way into an egg. We must protect the heart because the heart is the start.

“But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.”
(James 1:14-15) -ESV

I want to pray for three types of people:

  • If you have never accepted Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior yet you desire to do so, I want to pray with you and encourage you in your decision.
  • If you need to purify your heart and desire for GOD to remove your heart of stone and give you a new heart of flesh, let me know and I’ll pray with you and continue to pray for you. And I will also partner with you in a commitment to protecting your newly purified heart.
  • If the Holy Spirit has purified your heart throughout this message and you now desire to put on the breastplate of righteousness to protect your purified heart, I want to pray with you and continue to pray for you. And I will also partner with you in a commitment of fellowship to ensure accountability of a righteous life.
