Genesis 1:1 – 3:24

GOD Created

Referring to the invisible GOD Almighty, Genesis 1:1 says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

But if that was the beginning, then how could a GOD exist to create? How can GOD exist before the beginning? Or did GOD come into existence at the same time “in the beginning”? And if a Creator created everything, then who created this Creator? To answer that, we need only to know if The Creator (GOD) would exist contingently because only contingent beings need a cause. The answer is that GOD must exist necessarily because GOD exists by necessity of GOD’s own nature. Things that exist necessarily exist by necessity of their own nature. An example could be abstract objects such as numbers. Many mathematicians would concur that numbers exist by necessity of their own nature. Some, however, would argue that numbers simply cannot exist if nothing exists; numbers can only come into existence once the first something comes into existence. Things that exist contingently are caused to exist by something else. For example, a painting exists because an artist created it. A globe that many teachers use in classrooms only exists because it was created. Earth is the same – it exists contingently. How do we know this? Almost all physicists and cosmologists agree that at some point in the finite past the universe began to exist. In other words, there was nothing — no time, space, matter or energy — and then there was something. It is logically possible that the entire universe did not have to exist. But it does exist. Why? The universe doesn’t exist necessarily; rather, it exists contingently. The universe didn’t create itself because nothing cannot become something unless a certain Something (or Someone) creates that something. Therefore, creation comes from either GOD or abstract objects; however, abstract objects do not create anything; therefore, GOD is The Creator. It is argued that GOD created the entire universe and all life – specifically humankind. The only adequate explanation of a contingent universe existing is that it was created by a non-contingent and supernatural Being. GOD exists necessarily. Who made GOD? That question is like asking “Who caused the ‘uncaused first cause’?” A “created GOD” is not even a coherent concept. However, supposing that the universe has always existed and energy is eternal and uncreated, of course no one created it. But if it is meaningless to ask, “Who created energy or the universe?” since it has always existed, then it is equally meaningless to ask “Who made GOD?” since GOD has always existed. If, however, energy and the universe is not eternal, it needs a Cause. On the other hand, if it has no beginning, it does not need a cause of its beginning. Likewise, if GOD had no beginning, it is absurd to ask, “Who made GOD?” It is simply a category mistake to ask, “Who made the Unmade?” or “Who created the Uncreated?” However, the vast majority of physicists and cosmologists agree that at some point in the finite past, the universe did have a beginning. If the universe had a beginning, the universe exists contingently; therefore, the universe was created; GOD is the Creator and GOD exists necessarily. In conclusion, GOD was not created, GOD simply is. GOD is the uncaused, beginningless, changeless, immaterial, timeless, spaceless, enormously powerful cause of the universe and is also a free agent who is not a mere abstract object. All minds can only come from a Mind. Life can only come from life. Creation comes from a Creator. Therefore, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

Was GOD Lonely?

Genesis 1:1 says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

But what was GOD doing before He created? Did He merely exist in boredom, surrounded by void? Was He isolated and lonely?

In John 17:24, Jesus says in a prayer for His disciples, “Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.”

The Trinity of the Father, Son, and Spirit have always had relationship and union. 1John 4:8,16 informs us that “GOD is love.” And because love requires a beloved and a Spirit of love between the One who loves and the One who receives love, GOD is unable to be lonely. This illustration has the advantage of being personal, since it involves love, a characteristic that flows only from persons. And this three-in-one is even depicted and praised in the act of marriage. In marriage, the two become one with the spirit of love (Genesis 2:24; Matthew 19:5; 1Corinthians 6:16; Ephesians 5:31). So, 1 male + 1 female + 1 spirit of love = 1 marriage, which is 1 unity. [see Genesis 2:22-24]

Referring to Jesus Christ (the Son), Colossians 1:16-17 says, “16 For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. 17 He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”
But if Genesis 1:1 states that GOD created the heavens and the earth, then Jesus is GOD even though Jesus is the Son. Therefore, the very first verse of the Bible contains Christ even though Christ has not yet been revealed in the Biblical story.

Genesis 1:2 says, “The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.”

Genesis 1:3-5 says, “Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light. God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light day, and the darkness He called night.”

John 1:1-5 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.”

The phrase “in the beginning” brings us back to Genesis 1:1 and the “Word” is what is written in Genesis 1:3 when “God said” and then creation was formed through the Word. John makes it clear that the “Word” and “God” are distinct from each other yet at the same time the “Word was God.” The “Word” is Jesus (the Son) and “God” is the Father. The Son and the Father are distinct yet they are One.

John 3:19-21 says, “19 This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. 20 For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God.”

In John 14:6, Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.”

John 8:12 says, “Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.’ ”

John 9:5 says, “While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world.”

John 11:9-10 says, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. 10 But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.”

John 12:35-36 says, “35 So Jesus said to them, ‘For a little while longer the Light is among you. Walk while you have the Light, so that darkness will not overtake you; he who walks in the darkness does not know where he goes. 36 While you have the Light, believe in the Light, so that you may become sons of Light.’ ”

John 12:46 says, “I have come as Light into the world, so that everyone who believes in Me will not remain in darkness.”

Colossians 1:13-14 says, “13 For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”

So, Jesus was the Light of the world while He was in the world, but because Jesus ascended to Heaven after His resurrection, He gave authority to His children. Matthew 5:14-16 says, “14 You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; 15 nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”

Revelation 21:23-25 says, “23 And the city has no need of the sun or of the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God has illumined it, and its lamp is the Lamb. 24 The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it. 25 In the daytime (for there will be no night there) its gates will never be closed;”

Genesis 1:14 says, “Then God said, ‘Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years”

Genesis 15:5-6 says, “And [GOD] took [Abraham] outside and said, ‘Now look toward the heavens, and count the stars, if you are able to count them.’ And He said to him, ‘So shall your descendants be.’ Then he believed in the Lord; and He reckoned it to him as righteousness.”

In Matthew 2:2, the magi from the east said, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him.”

Matthew 2:9-11 says, “After hearing the king, they went their way; and the star, which they had seen in the east, went on before them until it came and stood over the place where the Child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 After coming into the house they saw the Child with Mary His mother; and they fell to the ground and worshiped Him.”

Matthew 24:29-30 says, “29 “But immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30 And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky…” [see also, Joel 3:15; Isaiah 13:10; Revelation 6:12-17]

Therefore, Genesis informs us that GOD made stars and they would serve as signs. The stars also represented the seed of Abraham being fruitful, from which Jesus eventually came. A specific cosmic sighting expressed as being a star led the wise men to Jesus. And in the end, the stars will again serve as a sign of Christ’s second coming when they fall from the sky and shine no more. And so yet again, Christ is in the beginning, which is Genesis.

What have you noticed about creation that calls attention to GOD’s design? Is there anything specific that has the signature of GOD?

Image of GOD

Genesis 1:26-28 says, “26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 God blessed them; and God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.’ ”

Us? Our image? Our likeness? Why the plural form? The plural pronoun “us” is simply required by the plural Hebrew noun אֱלֹהִים [H430] ‘ĕlōhîm (el-o-heem’), which is translated “God.” The plural nature of the Hebrew word is designed to give a fuller, more majestic sense to GOD’s name. “Us” portrays GOD deliberating in the midst of His court just as a king might have a court and discuss his plans among them (2Kings 22; Job1-2; Psalm 82; Isaiah 6). But “Our” cannot be so easily explained in the context of the ancient world. No evidence exists for the creation of people in both the image of GOD and the image of His angels. So, is it a coincidence that the plural Hebrew noun translates to “us” and “our”? It seems more likely that this implies a greater complexity to GOD’s nature and is a reference to the Trinity (Father, Son, Spirit). But should it truly surprise us that GOD’s greatness cannot be fathomed? It is written in Isaiah 55:8-9, “‘For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,’ declares the Lord. ‘For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways And My thoughts than your thoughts.’ ” And though the special divine revelation of the Trinity is not fully developed in the Old Testament, it is definitely foreshadowed (Psalm 110:1; Proverbs 30:4; Isaiah 63:7-10). Now examine: Genesis 1:1 describes the Father, Genesis 1:2 describes the Spirit, and Genesis 1:3 describes the Word (who is the Son). That’s the Trinity in the first three verses of the Bible. Yet we are created in “His” image? Whose image? In the image of the invisible GOD? No, but yes. We were created in the image of Jesus (the Son). From the beginning, humans were designed according to the design of Jesus’s body. We were modeled after Jesus. Daniel 3:1 describes the statue of Nebuchadnezzar with the same Hebrew term for image. Thus, “image” and “likeness” and synonymous. But even the use of Elohim is an incomplete picture of GOD. In Hebrew thought, a name was not just a way of identifying a person; it was a way of revealing his/her very identity and essence. It is the same with the names of GOD, but in Scripture, GOD’s identity is expressed not just in one name but in multiple different names, each one describing something new we need to learn and know about GOD. Each name of GOD is like a curtain covering a window. When the curtain is drawn back, the name becomes more fully known and glimpses of GOD can be seen. Elohim is the most common of the names used within Scripture, but there are many names associated with GOD because GOD’s greatness cannot be described by only one name.

Colossians 1:15 says, “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.”

Jesus (the Son) is the image of the invisible Father, and humans were created in His image. The word “firstborn” is an English translation of the Greek word πρωτότοκος [G4416] prōtotokos (pro-tot’-ahk-ahs), which references Jesus’s preeminence over all and superiority in position. Even Israel had been referred to as GOD’s firstborn (Exodus 4:22; Deuteronomy 21:16-17). Paul depicts Christ in terms similar to the presentation of the person of “Wisdom” in Proverbs 8:25-31 in that when everything was established, “I was there.” Wisdom was always present; likewise, Jesus was always present. In later Jewish wisdom literature, personified divine wisdom is described as the image of GOD. So, it would be a grave mistake to think in purely physical terms here, as if Paul were asserting that the Father existed before the Son and that the Son had a physical origin or was somehow created (the classic Arian heresy) rather than existing eternally as the Son, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, in the Godhead. What Paul had in mind was the rights and privileges of a firstborn son— especially the son of a monarch who would inherit ruling sovereignty. This is how the expression is used of David in Psalm 89:27: “I also shall make him My firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth.” So, not only are we created in Jesus’s image by physical appearance of the human body GOD designed, but we are also created in His image because we are supposed to be a reflection of GOD’s glory and character in our capacity for reason, creativity, humor, joy, speech, and free will for love and all its characteristics. As the image and likeness of GOD, humans were granted authority over earth, but that rulership only equates to stewardship because as it is written in Psalm 24:1, “The earth is the Lord’s, and all it contains, The world, and those who dwell in it.” But even though we were supposed to be children of GOD who reigned over creation as fruitful males and females (Genesis 1:28), Paul would later write in Romans 1:22-32 that the opposite happened due to the Fall:
22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures. 24 Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. 25 For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. 26 For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, 27 and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error. 28 And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful; 32 and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.”

But how did that happen? It happened due to the Fall (which will soon be discussed). Before the Fall, however, in Genesis 1:31, “God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good.” The creation is good because GOD the Creator is good (Psalms 34:8; 100:5; Jeremiah 33:11; Nahum 1:7; 1Peter 2:3). And because we were created in His image and likeness, we were designed for the very purpose of being good and doing good.

How many attributes of GOD can you think of that are good? How many of those good attributes do you accurately reflect for all mankind to see so that they might see your goodness and glorify GOD who is in Heaven?
If every human being is created in the image of GOD, how should you treat every human being you encounter? Do you meet that requirement? If not, what can you do to meet that requirement?

Breath of Life; Living Being

Genesis 2:7 says, “Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.”

The Hebrew אָדָם [H120] ‘āḏām (aw-dahm’) for “man” sounds like the Hebrew אֲדָמָה [H127] ‘ăḏāmâ (ad-aw-maw’) for “ground” in order to highlight the fact that human beings truly are nothing special without GOD’s breath of life. GOD spoke everything else into existence (Genesis 1:3,6,9,11,14,20,24), but He was intimate and personal when He created us in His image (1:26-27)! We were shaped and formed! Though the most common English translation of the Hebrew עָפָר [H6083] ʿāp̄hār (aw-fawr’) is “dust”, it may also be translated as dry earth, loose earth, ground, or even clay. And this would make sense because the Lord is the Potter and we are the clay (Isaiah 29:16; 64:8; Jeremiah 18:6; Lamentations 4:2; Zechariah 11:13; Romans 9:20-21). And then we received the Breath of Life! When it is written that man became a “living being”, that is the Hebrew נֶפֶשׁ [H5315] nep̄hešh (neh’-fesh), which means soul, self, life, that which breathes, that which possesses the breath, the inner being of a person, mind, living being, creature, desire, emotion, passion, or activity of the mind, will, or character. This is the same word used in Genesis 1:20,21,24,30 which describes all sea, land, and air animals that possess breath. And so the breath of GOD is what gives the creature its value. Humans have value; however, what is the value of the chemical elements that make up our bodies? If humans are without souls, what would the body be worth based on the material value? We were formed from the ground. Without the Breath of Life, the body is a mere shell. Scripture calls our bodies vessels and holy temples (John 2:21; Romans 9:21; 1Corinthians 6:19-20; 2Corinthians 4:7; 1Thessalonians 4:4; 2Timothy 2:20-21; Revelation 2:27). The substance is dependent upon its Source. GOD spoke to the source to create the substance. Without the source, the substance dies. Water is the source of fish; if you take a fish out of water, it will die. If you pull the vegetation out of the ground, it will die. If you separate a human body from the Breath of Life, the body will die. Is death an instantaneous response to the separation? No. The death happens slowly. Does a flower automatically die once you pluck it from the ground? No, it slowly withers to nothing. A human without GOD is like a fish out of water or a flower plucked from the ground. GOD spoke to the source to create the substance! But GOD spoke to Himself when He created humans! Nothing else was created by GOD speaking to Himself. Only humans. But GOD is The Source of everything (Deuteronomy 8:3; Psalm 42:1-3; Matthew 4:4; 5:6; Luke 4:4; John 4:10-14; 6:35,41,48,51; 7:37-38; Revelation 7:17)!

So, are you seeking the Source? David – a man after GOD’s own heart (1Samuel 13:14; Acts 13:22) – would later seek the Source while writing Psalm 8:3-9, declaring, “When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained; What is man that You take thought of him, And the son of man that You care for him? Yet You have made him a little lower than God, And You crown him with glory and majesty! You make him to rule over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet, All sheep and oxen, And also the beasts of the field, The birds of the heavens and the fish of the sea, Whatever passes through the paths of the seas. O Lord, our Lord, How majestic is Your name in all the earth!”

Genesis 2:15 says, “Then the Lord God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it.”

This is the rulership that becomes stewardship. GOD appointed Adam to be over the garden. Similar verbs describe the later role of the priests and Levites in the tabernacle and temple (Numbers 3:7-8; 8:26). These verbs, however, can also be translated as “serve” and “guard”. So, the man (Adam) was appointed a priestly role to protect the garden sanctuary.

You are a living being because you possess GOD’s breath of life within you. How long can you hold your breath? How long can you claim you don’t need GOD? After holding your breath for as long as you can, what adjectives can you use to describe the gift of breathing?

How does Adam’s priestly role over the Garden of Eden relate to your life? What has GOD allowed you to rule over? Are you being a good steward of what GOD has allowed you to rule over? If so, what are the ways you believe you are a good steward? If not, what do you need to start doing to be a better steward of all that GOD has given you?

The Woman

Genesis 2:18-20 says, “18 Then the Lord God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.” 19 Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the sky, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all the cattle, and to the birds of the sky, and to every beast of the field, but for Adam there was not found a helper suitable for him.”

This is the first occurrence we see of GOD’s great gift of free will granted to man. Whatever Adam chose to call the animals, GOD permitted Adam’s freedom of choice. Why? Because GOD was setting Adam up for an even greater decision he would soon need to make regarding his compatibility with the animals. GOD first showed all the animals to Adam so that he could realize on his own that animals are not suitable for being a sexual partner and life helper. That’s simply not the design. Animals are not equal to humans in value.

Leviticus 18:22-23 says, “22 You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination. 23 Also you shall not have intercourse with any animal to be defiled with it, nor shall any woman stand before an animal to mate with it; it is a perversion.” [see also, Exodus 22:19; Leviticus 20:10-22; Deuteronomy 27:21]

Genesis 2:22-24 says, “22 The Lord God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man. 23 The man said, ‘This is now bone of my bones, And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.’ 24 For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.”

Therefore, one male and one female for one lifetime is GOD’s design because GOD made female for male and presented her to him as a gift. Marriage was GOD’s idea. For this reason, no relationship other than what GOD designed and approved of can ever be called a marriage. GOD used Adam’s “rib” to form Eve in order to show that they were actually the same created being, two halves of a whole — two become one (Matthew 19:5; Mark 10:8; 1Corinthians 6:16; Ephesians 5:31). The female was not created as a separate being, second to the male. She was formed as part of the initial man, as the continuation of the creation, in order to be a suitable helper for the male, being compatible, complementary, and complete just as the North Pole and South Pole are both necessary for the whole earth to be complete as one. And because the two are one, if a man hates, hits, or hurts the woman, he hates, hits, and hurts himself. In fact, man was incomplete without woman; likewise, woman is incomplete without man. Relationship is essential to purpose. Adam lost a “rib”, but what he gained was more valuable than what he lost. Everything of value is worth the sacrifice that is required to obtain that something of value. But why did GOD use Adam’s “rib”? The Hebrew word for “rib” is צֵלָע [H6763] tṣēlāʿ (tsay-law) and always means “side” where it occurs elsewhere in Scripture. Marriage, therefore, is a natural relationship of the side reuniting with the man missing his side. The puzzle is not complete without the missing piece. Eve came from Adam’s side. In other words, Eve is the other half of Adam. This would explain why Adam exclaimed that Eve was bone from his bone and flesh from his flesh. This also explains why he calls her woman — she was taken from man. And because bone refers to strength and flesh refers to weakness, Adam’s declaration of his delight of the woman would be equivalent to a modern marriage vow: “In strength and weakness, whether good or bad, health or sickness, we are one!” When GOD created Eve from Adam’s side, He accomplished the act in such a way that showed the woman was to complement and complete man in the integral union of marriage. Woman was created to be “beside” man, not beneath him nor above him. Side by side. Equal. And this would explain why there is neither male nor female, that all are one in Christ Jesus (Galatians 3:28). Adam sacrificed some of himself in order to have Eve as a partner in life. Ponder on that. Some people won’t donate any part of their bodies – not even to save a life – but Adam made the sacrifice of his side just to have Eve by his side and abolish loneliness from his life. He was thankful that he was able to make a sacrifice in order to abolish loneliness. What sacrifices are you willing to make in order to abolish loneliness from your life? Talk to people? Actually give someone a chance? Decide not to be judgmental about the way they look and instead make a decision to get to know that person’s character and personality? You may not need to have your side surgically removed, but you will have to give up something spiritually in order to gain something spiritual. If you think about it, all that you’re really giving up is the loneliness itself and trading it in for the joy of fellowship or relationship. And though Eve became the female human “helper” for Adam, all females are only capable of help according to the limits of being a finite and fallible human. Scripture informs us that ultimately, the Lord is our Helper (Psalm 33:20; 70:5; 115:11; 121:2) and He will help us return to the original design of relationship with Him while having joy, peace, security, and fulfillment of purpose on the New Earth under the new heavens (Revelation 21-22).

If you are a male, do you have a wife? If you are a female, do you have a husband? If so, when was the last time you thanked GOD for your helper?
When was the last time you thanked your spouse for being your helper?
What sacrifices are you willing to make for your marriage?
When was the last time you both prayed, praised, and/or worshiped GOD together as one?

The Serpent’s Slippery Slope

Genesis 3:1 [a] says, “Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made.”

Is Satan the serpent? Yes; he is also known as the dragon and the devil.

2Corinthians 11:3 says, “But I am afraid that, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, your minds will be led astray from the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ.”

2Corinthians 11:14 says, “No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.”

Revelation 12:9; says, “And the great dragon was thrown down, the serpent of old who is called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.”

Revelation 20:2. says, “And he laid hold of the dragon, the serpent of old, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years;”

Satan is described as being crafty, cunning, calculating, and indirectly deceiving. The word “crafty” is an English translation of the Hebrew word עָרוּם [H6175] ʿārûm (aw-room’), which means shrewd, crafty, wise, sensible, or prudent. Now, it’s important to realize that this is a good quality to possess. In fact, the same word is used in Proverbs 14:15, saying, “The naive believes everything, But the sensible man considers his steps.” Unfortunately, neither Eve nor Adam would be sensible enough to consider their steps and would soon be naïve enough to believe the serpent who would use a good quality in order to do evil and achieve an evil end.

Genesis 3:1 [b] continues, “And he said to the woman, ‘Indeed, has God said, “You shall not eat from any tree of the garden”?’ ”

Satan didn’t approach Adam directly; the serpent’s tactic was to slither in from the side in Adam’s blind spot. If Satan can’t get to you directly, he’ll go after all you love (see the book of Job). Just as Satan went after the wife (Eve) because he wasn’t able to get to the husband (Adam), Satan is after “the wife”/Bride of Christ/Church because he wasn’t able to get to “the husband”/Bridegroom/Jesus (Ephesians 5:22-33; 2Corinthians 11:2; Matthew 9:15; Mark 2:19-20; Luke 5:34-35; John 3:29; Revelation 19:7-9; 21:1-2; 22:17). Why did the serpent target Eve rather than Adam? Is it because females are inferior to males? No. Genesis 2:15-17 informs us that GOD had personally commanded and warned Adam about the forbidden fruit and then put him in charge of cultivating, keeping, and guarding the garden. It seems the serpent was confident that he would be able to trick Eve directly, but only be able to trick Adam indirectly through Eve because Adam already trusted Eve.

Genesis 3:2-6 says, “The woman said to the serpent, ‘From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.’” The serpent said to the woman, “You surely will not die! For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate.”

At first, Eve responded by repeating what GOD had said. Whether she heard the command and warning directly from GOD, we do not know, but she did possess knowledge of what GOD had said. If it had been Adam’s responsibility to tell Eve, then it is possible that she only knew because Adam told her. Noteworthy is the fact that Eve omitted the name of the tree (the knowledge of good and evil), which contains the rationale for not eating from it. So, did she know its name or had Adam simply told her about the tree in the center? Eve also added in a command that they shouldn’t even touch the fruit, which was not recorded in chapter 2. So, did GOD command not to even touch it or is that what Adam had told her? Regardless, the serpent’s first approach was to put GOD’s Word into question, but when the serpent realized she knew what GOD had said, his next tactic was to attack the true meaning of GOD’s words. This is what happens when we have GOD’s Word as head knowledge only without it being deeply rooted in our hearts. The serpent built off the foundation of what Eve knew and then used what she did not know in order to reinterpret GOD’s words to mean what GOD had never meant to say. Satan denied the consequence of sin and glorified its reward. If you’re going to lean on GOD’s Word, then Satan will try to use any area of ignorance about GOD’s Word in order to fill in the gaps with lies so that he can redirect you away from the straight path (Proverbs 4:20-27). Later on, Satan attempts to use this same tactic with Jesus while He is fasting in the wilderness, but Satan fails miserably because he tries to argue the Word with the One who is the Word (Matthew 4:1-11; John 1:1). And with the twisting of GOD’s words, the serpent presented to Eve a temptation to become her own god. All the serpent had to do was convince Eve that what she believed to be bad was not actually bad, but good that was being withheld from her by a deceiving dictator who wanted to prevent her from reaching her full potential. Have you ever heard a child say to a parent, “You just don’t want me to be happy!” or, “You never let me have any fun!”?

The serpent convinced Eve that she deserved better and that he wanted what was best for her. Sadly, even though we have GOD’s Word we can study, in 2024, there are deceived people who are claiming that Satan is actually the “good guy” and that GOD is the true villain because GOD wants to enslave us and withhold pleasure from us while Satan is trying to set us free so we can be happy without unjust restrictions. Ironically, both Adam and Eve were created in the image of GOD and were created to be like GOD, yet the serpent convinced Eve that she didn’t need GOD but needed to become her own god. Consequently, the tree became a “delight” to her eyes. That word translated as “delight” is the Hebrew תַּאֲוָה [H8378] ta’ăvâ (tah-ah-vaw’), which is a strong desire, a longing for something, or even a lustful appetite. This same word is used in Numbers 11:4 to describe the “greedy desires” of the Israelites who complained to GOD that they wanted what they did not have. When it says that “the tree was desirable”, the word translated as “desirable” is the Hebrew חָמַד [H2530] ḥāmaḏ (khaw-mad’), which means to covet. The same form appears in the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:17; Deuteronomy 5:21) where GOD forbids the Israelites from lusting after what does not belong to them. Eve desired to possess what was not hers to possess.

The devil is the deceiver and original liar (John 8:44; 2Corinthians 11:14; Revelation 12:9). We know that’s what GOD’s Word says. But do we truly believe it? To know what is written is mere intellectual assent, but to trust in GOD’s Word is the faith GOD desires. To question GOD’s commands is to question His love for us. To question GOD is to put GOD on trial and accuse him of wrongdoing; in fact, the adversary is the accuser who desires to put GOD on trial (see the book of Job).

Satan told a “white lie” (half truth) when he told Adam and Eve they would not die. There is a difference between the physical death and spiritual death. Adam and Eve immediately died spiritually; however, their physical deaths didn’t come until much later. Just as a flower slowly withers and dies after being plucked out from the ground, Adam and Eve were plucked out from the Garden and so began to slowly wither and die. And because of this spiritual death, Satan is known as the father of all lies and a murderer from the beginning. When the conniving counterfeiter conjured up his plan to ruin a blissful and content life for Adam and Eve, he did it with intentions of ruining life for their children as well. Satan knew what he was doing — he is crafty, remember? Never underestimate the enemy. Satan will use the truth against us, but embellishing the truth, building his clever lies on the foundation of truth in order to persuade us to do or not do something. Think of the classic fairy tale, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The evil Queen convinced Snow White to eat the poisonous apple in order to kill her. Snow White only saw the outer truth which was the apple, but she did not see the inner truth of the poison. And so she died. Eventually, Snow White had a prince come to her rescue and save her through true love, taking her out of death’s hands. We also had a Prince that saved us and took us out of death’s hands because He saved us through true love – Christ Jesus (Isaiah 9:6; John 3:16-17; 1Corinthians 15:51-58).

Another example to consider is the seaweed decorator crab — it places objects on itself in order to disguise itself. Like the crab, the conniving counterfeiter also disguises himself (2Corinthians 11:14). The seaweed decorator crab is the truth – it is what it is. But then it places different sets of truths on itself so that you only see those particular truths and can no longer see the truth of the crab. When the crab disguises itself in this manner, it makes it easier to catch prey. Likewise, Satan is the same. For this reason, it is written in 1Peter 5:8 that “Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” Satan distracts us with surface truth sometimes so that we may be easier prey. I call Satan “The Salesman” because he always tries to sell us on different sets of surface truths by highlighting the good about them without mentioning the bad in order to persuade us to take him up on his offer. You have a choice to make: Deal or no deal. But in the skillful art of negotiation, the key is knowing when to walk away. In fact, GOD will always provide for us an escape or way out if we are seeking Him and His will. For this reason, Paul wrote in 1Corinthians 10:13, “No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.” For this reason, 1Peter 5:9 continues with a solution to the problem: “But resist him, firm in your faith.” If Satan is the Salesman, then you must be the negotiator who seeks his/her Consultant (Holy Spirit) prior to making a damning deal. It’s important to realize that the Salesman will often present two options as if they are your only two choices. This is the fallacy of false dilemma. Satan essentially presented Eve’s situation to her in this way: “Well, you could either not eat that fruit and forever be devoid of complete joy and never know your full potential or you could eat that fruit and be like GOD, know your full potential, and possess complete joy. Listen, GOD simply doesn’t want you to be like Him. But you don’t have to be like Him. You can be you, but the best version of yourself, living out your full potential.” However convincing that false dilemma may sound, there is definitely a third choice that could have been made! Eve could have responded by saying, “Or I can trust in GOD’s goodness, believe He wants what is best for me, and be content with all that I have already been given. Why do I need more when I’m already happy? GOD has given me a great variety of fruit to eat from this entire garden. So, if He says I should stay away from that one, then I’ll trust Him.”

Satan’s reasoning was as if he presented a prize to Eve. The goal was to get Eve to doubt GOD’s goodness and then convince Eve that she no longer needed GOD because she could become her own god. This is an attack on identity. This is the original sin – pride. Satan also got Eve to redirect her focus from what she did have to what she did not have. And then the tree in the center became her center focus. Eve then harped on what she believed was being withheld from her and she became self-entitled, believing she deserved what was forbidden [even though it was forbidden for her own protection]. Genesis 3:6 informs us that Eve was convinced — she had been convinced that she could not be content with what she had and that she needed more. The battle was lost in the mind. The best use of free will is not in doing everything we want to do but in the discipline of choosing to act in faithful obedience because we know what not to do. For this reason, Paul said that all things were lawful for him, but but not all things were profitable or edifying, and so he refused to be mastered by anything (1Corinthians 6:12; 10:23). When GOD told Adam and Eve what not to do, it was for their own good. Whenever GOD tells us not to do something, it’s not because GOD loves controlling us and enjoys withholding something good from us. No, it’s because GOD loves us and is giving us inside information, or helpful hints. When GOD gives us a list of what not to do (like the Ten Commandments in Exodus 20:1-17), He is essentially giving us a cheat sheet of correct answers so we can pass the test easier. That is an act of love! But take notice of Eve’s process: she listened to Satan, received his words, allowed Satan’s words to have more authenticity and authority than GOD’s Word, she looked where Satan instructed her to look, desired what Satan promised, justified wrongdoing, took action, and then passed the sin along because she didn’t feel any immediate consequences. The battle is often lost as soon as a person concedes to the process of the slippery slope. Perhaps that is why Jesus told us that even a lustful look equates to adultery in the heart (Matthew 5:28) and the heart is where evil starts (Matthew 15:19). Sin is contagious and spreads like a virus (Matthew 13:24-30,36-43). Therefore, we need discernment to recognize Satan’s snares so that we will not even allow the process of the slippery slope to begin.

Sin gets accepted when it arrives in disguise under the notion of it either being able to bring us happiness or it being “progress.” But is it all truly progress? For what ultimate goal is this progress made? We are always making progress; we are always getting closer to a goal. But in which direction are we traveling? It is possible to travel with good intentions and still end up going in the wrong direction. Are we getting closer to praise or discipline? Every single step we take brings us closer to either Heaven or Hell. Humans have a long history of justifying their wrongdoings. Do any of the following sound familiar to you?
“It’s just a little bit…”;
“It’s only…”;
“Just for a little while…”;
“It’s not like I’m doing…”;
“At least I’m not doing…”;
“It’s not like it’s going to kill me.”;
“Well, it makes me happy, so…”;
“It feels good, so…”;
“Everyone does it.”;
“If it doesn’t hurt anybody else, it’s all right.”;
“If it feels okay, it must be.”;
“It’s not that bad.”;
“I’m just going to do it one more time…”;
“I deserve to be happy.”;
“My will be done.”
These subtle entreaties make Satan to be the salesman, the cunning counterfeiter, the master manipulator, the devil who deceives. For this reason, it is written in John 10:10 that “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.”

How well do you know GOD’s Word?
Where do the gaps exist in your knowledge of GOD’s Word where Satan could fill in those gaps with surface truths that will ultimately lead to living out a deadly lie?
Where are you at in the process of the slippery slope?
If you have a spouse, is there anything your spouse does and/or wants you to do that is leading you away from GOD’s will? If so, how can you address this with your spouse in order to come back into alignment with GOD’s will?
How many counterfeits has Satan the salesman sold to you? What were they? Why were you fooled by them? What can you do to ensure it won’t happen again?
If you’re focusing on what you do not have, what can you do to shift your focus so that you can be grateful and content for all that you do have?
How many excuses are you making while trying to justify wrongdoing?
If you have justified your sin, have you passed the sin along to others? If so, who? And what can you say to that person now that you realize the wrong you’ve done?

The Fall

Genesis 3:7-13 says, ‘Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings. They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. Then the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, ‘Where are you?10 He said, ‘I heard the sound of You in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself.’ 11 And He said, ‘Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?’ 12 The man said, ‘The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me from the tree, and I ate.’ 13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, ‘What is this you have done?’ And the woman said, ‘The serpent deceived me, and I ate.’ ”

This section showcases GOD as the Good Father who is patient and loving. GOD is the One who sought them out; it was the Lord who came looking for them. So, are we all truly so different from Adam and Eve? Ultimately, Jesus seeks every single one of us out, leaving the 99 just to come get the one (Luke 15:3-6; 19:10). While it’s true that GOD sought them out in order to discipline and correct them, He also sought them out for the purpose of restoring their relationship with each other and their relationship with Him. The first disconnect and loss was when Adam and Eve felt shame at their nakedness. Why would they cover themselves simply because they discovered they were naked? Why would that matter? Adam and Eve already knew each other and had previously seen each other naked on many occasions. So, why would the fact that they were naked disturb them now? Apparently, out of their innocence, they had been ignorant of the concept of being naked because GOD asked them how they knew they were naked, implying that they should not have known they were naked. Like young innocent toddlers who don’t yet realize the concept of nakedness, Adam and Eve had not realized the concept of nakedness because they had been without the knowledge of evil. I personally believe they had not had sexual relations prior to the Fall. Not only is their sexual relation not documented until Genesis 4:1 (after the fall), but in Matthew 22:30, Jesus said, “For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.” But if our future resurrection and life on the New Earth is the restoration of the original Garden design, why did GOD design for Adam and Eve to be married if there will not be marriage in the future? Because from His omniscience, He knew they were going to sin, that He would have to banish them from the Garden of Eden, that they would need to be fruitful and multiply, and that a future Seed would bring eternal restoration. This would explain why they both covered their reproductive parts immediately after their eyes had been opened. Most likely, it was the first time they felt the power of the lust of the flesh. It might have even been the first time Eve witnessed Adam with an erection. The concept of clothing had not yet been invented — clothing didn’t exist until GOD created it from animal skins (Genesis 3:21) — but Adam and Eve attempted to create covering from leaves. By covering themselves, they uncovered their sin and also revealed that they no longer believed they were good enough. And that is exactly what Satan desired to accomplish; Satan wanted them to disobey GOD and believe they weren’t good enough for GOD’s love. But what caused Adam and Eve to believe they weren’t good enough? This is the second disconnect and loss. Sin has a domino effect. Did Adam and Eve suddenly become self-conscious and perceive each other’s glances as negative spotlights that highlighted insecurities? A newfound awareness of nakedness would create many questions. What was the cause of this insecurity they felt? Perhaps the sudden rushing wave of emotions created confusion and uncertainty. It was all so new to them and they most likely felt overwhelmed and simply didn’t know how to respond. But the one thing that is certain is that both Adam and Eve suddenly felt as if they needed to hide themselves from each other. Satan created a divide between Adam and Eve. In addition, they both felt as if they weren’t good enough for GOD’s love and that they needed to cover up their guilt, confusion, and insecurities. They hid themselves from each other and then they attempted to hide from GOD.

The dominoes keep falling. The third disconnect and loss was when they experienced fear and attempted to hide from the Lord when they heard Him walking. But how could they hear Him walking if GOD is Spirit and invisible? Again, the Son is the physical exact representation of the Father. For this reason, Jesus said in John 14:9, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father.”

But why would Adam and Eve have experienced fear? Again, guilt was a new concept to them and it probably created confusion. Due to the uncertainty and new insecurities, they panicked and also desired to hide from GOD. Prior to this moment, they only knew GOD to be perfect, Holy, and just. How would a Holy GOD respond to their disobedience and the consequences that came from their choices? It’s easy for us to look back in time and look down on them in their situation and wonder how they could have been so ridiculous as to believe they could hide from GOD, but everything was new to them. Think about it: both Adam and Eve had to learn how to be human by themselves. We have had others to teach us and show us by example, but they were without that benefit. The entire concept of evil was new to them. Plus, we have all attempted to hide our sins in one way or another, haven’t we? If you’re honest, you’ll confess that you have. How many sins have you hoped to get away with in your lifetime? How many sins have you committed in “secret”? But are your sins truly veiled in secrecy? Isn’t GOD omniscient?

If GOD is omniscient, why did He inquire of Adam’s location? Well, when GOD asks us questions, it is not because He does not know the answer, it is for our benefit so that we may seek the answer (Mark 10:18). And even though Adam and Eve desired to hide from GOD, these verses reveal GOD’s desire to have a relationship with us — He made the effort to seek them even when they were making an effort to hide. Hide and Seek is a popular game children play. Think about this: it’s not fun to go hide unless you are eventually found. If you remain in hiding for too long, you will soon feel forgotten and/or get tired of hiding and come out of your hiding place. If the seeker decides not to seek, then how could the one hiding ever be found? Some people are hiding in their shame; however, some people are lost and don’t even realize they’re in danger and need to be found. But GOD is the loving Father and Seeker of souls who actively looks out for the lost (Luke 15:20,24; 19:10).

Everyone who has a guilty conscience is without excuse (Romans 1:19-20; James 4:17). A guilty conscience is a warning signal GOD installed within us to let us know when we have violated the absolute moral standard. The “no regrets” lifestyle will be the biggest regret of your life. We are designed to learn from our mistakes. Some regrets are good to have because they keep us humble and help us grow. And this is why Adam confessed to GOD that he was somewhere he wasn’t supposed to be (hiding in fear among the trees). But we all need to answer the question GOD asked Adam: “Where are you?” So, are you in hiding? Are you lost? Where are you? Are you where you are supposed to be? If not, why are you there? GOD does not launch a monologue-missile toward you with intentions of destroying His target; rather, He asks questions and listens carefully, hoping for a dialogue that will lead to genuine relationship. He wants to hear you confess your wrongdoings and then learn from your mistakes so that you can become the person He designed and purposed you to be. For this reason, Paul wrote in 1Thessalonians 4:3, “For this is the will of God, your sanctification.” Therefore, it is GOD’s will that we go through a purification process so that we will end up being Holy vessels fit for the Kingdom (Proverbs 17:3; 25:4; 2Timothy 2:20-21; 1Peter 1:6-7). In Romans 6:19, Paul explains that we must die to our flesh and sin, continue practicing righteousness, and that practicing righteousness will result in our sanctification.

Examine closely the questions GOD asked Adam. Where are you at in life right now? How did you get there? Whose words were you listening to? Did you act on those words or My words? When confronted with sin, how do you respond? At first, Adam refused to take responsibility for his action and he blamed Eve. After blaming Eve, he even blamed GOD for giving Eve to him. However, after blaming Eve and GOD, he confessed that he did eat the forbidden fruit. How do you think that made Eve feel toward Adam? How did that affect their relationship? How would you feel if your spouse shifted the blame onto you in front of GOD – even if it was your fault? Would you feel betrayed and hurt? And even though Eve confessed to eating the forbidden fruit, she also refused to take responsibility for her action and she blamed the serpent. And though it’s not written in the passage, the serpent (Satan) refused to look inward; instead, he tried to blame humans while putting GOD on trial for creating the humans (see the book of Job). But was Adam guilty or was Eve the only one who was guilty? Yes – Adam was also guilty. Eve certainly did give the forbidden fruit to Adam, but it was his decision to receive it from her. Certainly, the serpent was guilty for convincing Eve to eat the forbidden fruit, but Eve possessed free will and did not have to choose to eat of the fruit. The victim mentality refuses to look inward and/or accept responsibility. What about you? Do you take responsibility for your actions or do you try to shift the blame onto others? Is it truly your parents’ fault? Does the blame truly fall on that person or people you have in mind? Are you completely blameless? Are you sinless? Certainly not (Psalm 51:5; Romans 3:23). Is it possible that you have avoided looking inward and have refused to accept responsibility for what you have chosen to do? Sometimes people truly are victims and are not guilty in certain situations such as rape or death due to a vehicle accident, but most people reap what they sow (Job 4:8; Proverbs 14:14; 22:8; Jeremiah 17:10; Hosea 10:12-13; Luke 6:37-38; 2Corinthians 9:6; Galatians 6:7-8). However, we must have the mentality that we are not victims; rather, we are conquerors in Christ (Romans 8:37-39)! And what do conquerors do? They take responsibility for their own actions and they overcome evil by doing good (Romans 12:21)!

Genesis 3:14-15 says, “14 The Lord God said to the serpent, ‘Because you have done this, Cursed are you more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you will go, And dust you will eat All the days of your life; 15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel.”

Satan wanted GOD to blame and curse the humans, but GOD – as the Holy Judge – pronounced a guilty verdict on Satan and sentenced him with a curse. Not only does dust symbolize humiliation (Genesis 18:27; Job 30:19; 42:6; Psalm 72:9; Isaiah 49:23; 65:25; Micah 7:17), but man was created from the dust of the earth and so Satan will be forced to eat dust as a daily reminder that the humans he wanted to corrupt and destroy will forever be a bad taste in his mouth as he will forever be beneath them, never to be elevated above them. And then GOD promised that through the woman the Son of Man will “bruise” his head and he will only “bruise” His heel (Romans 16:20; Galatians 4:4; 1John 3:8). This, of course, is prophecy concerning Jesus finally cutting the head off the serpent and putting an end to his venomous bite that brings death. This prophecy concerning the Seed becomes the seed of all future prophecies. That word “bruise” is an English translation of the Hebrew word שׁוּף [H7779] šhûp̄h (shoof), which means to snap at, to lie in wait for something/someone, to fall upon, or to overwhelm. Therefore, the depth beyond the surface of this promise is all about GOD’s perfect and precise timing. When the time is right, the Lord will crush the serpent’s head while the serpent believes his timing in striking will be most effective. In other words, GOD essentially said, “I already know what you will plan to do and it won’t work. I’m going to allow you to strike and then I’m going to use your own plan against you and strike you down.” Interestingly, David used this same Hebrew word in Psalm 139:11 while describing GOD’s omniscience and omnipresence, stating that even if he were to be overwhelmed by the darkness of night, darkness is not dark to GOD because both darkness and light are alike to the Lord who can see everything.

Genesis 3:16-19 says, “16 To the woman He said, ‘I will greatly multiply Your pain in childbirth, In pain you will bring forth children; Yet your desire will be for your husband, And he will rule over you.’ 17 Then to Adam He said, ‘Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat from it’; Cursed is the ground because of you; In toil you will eat of it All the days of your life. 18 “Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you; And you will eat the plants of the field; 19 By the sweat of your face You will eat bread, Till you return to the ground, Because from it you were taken; For you are dust, And to dust you shall return.”

GOD didn’t threaten Eve with greater pain, He merely promised her what was going to happen as consequences of her choices. If she wanted to be like GOD, then she would have to bring children into the world via creation and experience the pain they will bring her. Eve had never given birth before, but GOD warned her in advance to expect it to be painful. Just as GOD’s children brought (and will bring) Him pain, she will also understand what it will feel like for a child of her own to bring her pain. May we understand GOD’s words not as prescriptive but descriptive. Ponder on this: Adam and Eve got exactly what they desired. Eve desired to be like GOD, to know good and evil, and to be the one to make all of her own decisions. Adam was with her and also desired the same. However, getting what we want doesn’t necessarily mean that it will be what is best. How many times have you gone out of your way to get what you want only to later find out that it was not what was best or what you needed? All of GOD’s commands are for our own good. Just as a child trusts the parent(s) to give him/her what is best and right, we need to trust GOD that He wants the best for us and will give to us what is good (Proverbs 3:5-7; Matthew 6:26; 7:11; Luke 11:13; 12:24,28). Satan’s ultimate goal is for you to freely choose disobedience and rebellion. Doubt, discouragement, diversion, division, delay, and defeat will all amount to disobedience. Satan desires for you to question GOD’s goodness, focus on your problems rather than possibilities, keep your attention on attractive lures that will derail you, procrastinate and keep projects incomplete, and make you feel like a failure so that you will give up. Be careful about pursuing pleasantries. We can’t always get what we want — and that’s a good thing! The pursuit of pleasure can often lead us to pain. In fact, GOD tells Eve that her disobedience will bring pain in childbirth. Given the fact that Eve’s first son will later murder her second son (Genesis 4:8), perhaps the promised pain is less about the physical pain of giving birth and more about the emotional pain she will experience in seeing the violence and brokenness in her family due to everyone being born into sin (Romans 3:9-18; 5:12).

Genesis 3:20 says, “Now the man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all the living.”

Up to this point, Adam’s wife had only been referred to as “the woman”, but now Adam gives her a name. Following GOD’s judgment, it is interesting that Adam gives his female partner in life the name “Eve” because the name Eve sounds like a Hebrew term that means, “to give life.” Both Adam and Eve were promised death because of their sins, yet Adam desired to restore his relationship with his wife and proclaims that even through death, life will come through her! There is hope in the midst of judgment! Life will conquer death! In fact, GOD even promised victory in Genesis 3:15 that her Seed will crush the serpent’s head (Romans 16:20; 1Corinthians 15:25; Revelation 12:9-10). And so Eve’s name proclaims the Gospel message: through death, life will come through her because the future Seed will be Jesus who will conquer death once and for all (1Corinthians 15:53-57).

Genesis 3:21 says, “The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them.”

The theological importance of this needs to be understood. GOD covered them. This is a divine covering. Throughout the Old Testament, one of the meanings of “to atone” is “to cover.” It’s no wonder that GOD’s righteousness is compared to clothing (Ecclesiastes 9:8; Luke 9:29; Revelation 3:5), as is unrighteousness being represented by “filthy garments” (Isaiah 64:6; Zechariah 3:3-4). Consider the father in Luke 15:22 who clothed his wayward son with the “best robe” upon the son’s return. It is also important to note that GOD covers Adam and Eve before they were expelled from the Garden. Grace always covers the Law. However, at least one animal that GOD called “good” (Genesis 1:25) had to die in order for Adam and Eve to be covered. This is truly where the sacrificial system begins: at the fall of mankind. Why? Because the promised spiritual death began in Genesis 3:6 with Eve’s covetousness. And as Paul would later write in Romans 6:23, “the wages of sin is death.”

Genesis 3:22-24 says, “22 Then the Lord God said, ‘Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil; and now, he might stretch out his hand, and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever’— 23 therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden of Eden, to cultivate the ground from which he was taken. 24 So He drove the man out; and at the east of the garden of Eden He stationed the cherubim and the flaming sword which turned every direction to guard the way to the tree of life.”

Why would a loving GOD banish Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden? Did the punishment match the crime? GOD is Holy and sin simply cannot coexist with holiness (1Corinthians 10:21). GOD still loved them, but sin must be dealt with and evil must be purged. The difficult part to grasp in all of this is that GOD driving them out of the Garden and protecting the tree of life was a good thing and was for humanity’s best interest. Why? GOD had a plan to bring restoration. GOD is both justice and mercy. Even though Adam and Eve had to be punished for their sins, GOD had already made up His mind to love them, redeem humanity, and restore relationship through Christ Jesus. The big picture provides proper prospective and helps us understand GOD’s sacrificial love. GOD loves us so much that He allowed us to use our free will to make mistakes so that we can learn to love like Him. GOD only desired to prevent Adam and Eve (all of us) from living forever at that time because they (and all of us) were simply not yet ready to live eternally with a Holy GOD. Being able to rightly use free will to live in holiness requires not only a lifetime of training and practice, but because we are simply incapable of doing so without the help from the Holy Spirit, GOD needed to enact His plan for the relentless rescue operation of Jesus to atone for all of our sins. In the big eternal picture, the banishment is only temporary. Revelation 21-22 reveals that humanity will not be banished forever; in fact, we will live in His presence once again, but this time with glorified bodies (1Corinthians 15:35-58). GOD knew Adam and Eve were going to partake of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. He didn’t prevent them from doing so (as He did with the tree of life) because the Fall was absolutely necessary in order for us to go through the process of purification, learning how to be righteous and understanding why being righteous is good. The Fall serves the purposes of teaching us humility and gratitude. This life on this earth is mere training for the real life on the New Earth. All of us — in one way or another — had to partake of the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil before we could ever partake of the fruit of the tree of life. For this reason, Jesus said in Revelation 2:7, “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will grant to eat of the tree of life which is in the Paradise of God.” And then Revelation 22 reveals that the children of GOD will finally partake of the tree of life on the New Earth under the new heavens. And it is there we will realize that the process of purification, though painful, was worth it in the end. And our humility and gratitude will prevent us from ever having another Fall again.

In summary, Genesis means “beginning.” This is the beginning of space, time, matter, and all life. This is the telling of the Creator and His creation. GOD showcased His mastery as He created order in the cosmos and as He brought order to His relationship with people. GOD created everything perfect; one aspect of GOD’s perfection is revealed in His loving gift of free will, which was represented by the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (2:17). Adam and Eve had to make a choice: will they trust GOD’s definition of good and evil and live by His absolute standard or will they choose autonomy and define good and evil for themselves? This is where the adversary, Satan — depicted here as the serpent (3:1) — comes into the picture as an image of rebellion against GOD’s absolute standard. The serpent tells Adam and Eve that they will be like GOD if they possess all knowledge (3:5). This is the introduction to the origin of sin — pride. Through free will, the humans chose to sin and then sin separated us from GOD’s presence and Holy standard. Human relationships are a constant downward spiral due to the original sin and consequences continue to fall like dominoes. As a result of the separation (the Fall), people no longer had an accurate idea of who GOD is and what GOD is like; consequently, humans started to lose their identity. GOD’s love brought about a covenant with His chosen people so that sin would not win; GOD’s love will prevail. Even after the original sin, GOD makes a promise of victory through prophecy regarding the Son of Man (3:15) and a picture of redemption through sacrifice (3:21) from the animals GOD had called good (1:25) – all of which foreshadows what will follow throughout the entire Bible — GOD has a plan for restoration. However, the promise does not erase the consequences of sin; humanity will still need to persistently plow through the painful process of purification until the promise arrives. In the fallen world, evil accumulates and sin piles up. Obstacles are overcome one by one as GOD demonstrates His love and supremacy; however, the decision to be like GOD (3:6) causes widespread evil on Earth (6:5), which begins with Adam and Eve’s son, Cain (4:8)…

Has Satan led you to believe that you aren’t good enough for GOD’s love because of the mistakes you’ve made in your life? But what has GOD said about this?
The Lord is constantly pursuing you. Will you attempt to hide from the Lord? Or will you accept correction so He can make things right again?
Where are you at in life right now? How did you get there? Are you where you’re supposed to be? If not, why not? Whose words were you listening to? Whose words did you receive and act upon?
When confronted with sin, how do you respond? Do you take responsibility for your actions or do you try to shift the blame onto others? Is it truly someone else’s fault? Does the blame truly fall on that person or people you have in mind? Are you completely blameless? Are you sinless?
The Fall came about due to a disconnect of head knowledge of GOD’s Word and a deep trust in the Lord within the heart. Are there any areas in your life right now where you lack trust in the Lord even though you know what GOD’s Word says about that topic? If so, what are those areas and why do you think it is so?
As a serious consideration, when you arrive on the New Earth under the new heavens, what do you think you will want to say to Adam and Eve when you see them there? I think I will say, “If I’m honest, I think I would have done the same thing you did. But praise the Lord that He allowed us the opportunity to temporarily taste the bitterness of evil so that we will be eternally grateful for the sweetness of the tree of life. Amen.”

What Is Love?

The following article is Lesson 3 from my book, Superhero University: The Ultimate Superhero Training Manual:

Superheroes, having the correct understanding of what is good and right, are full of love, and they are compelled to act out from love. This is the only reason we can distinguish the hero from the villain. Spider-Man doesn’t save a falling person from splatting on the ground because he hates the person he saves, right? The superhero saves someone from danger/death because he/she has love for the person he/she is saving. In stark contrast, the villain performs acts of evil, not love. Again, evil is merely a privation of what is good; hatred is a privation or lack of love. It is written in James 2:8 that we are doing right by living a life of love toward others. But what is love?

Love is not something we can have or hold like materialists would like us to believe. Not everything in life can be boiled down to materialism. Think about it: Can you describe the physical features of love or even the thought about love? How much does love weigh? Of what is the love molecule comprised? There is no infinity stone of love we can possess that can be contained in a gauntlet. In fact, of all the infinity stones Thanos (from the Avengers) had been able to collect that provided him with seemingly unlimited power and ability, it is evident that he lacked love, and that is why he had no qualms about murdering half of the created creatures in the universe—including his own daughter! In fact, Thanos had to sacrifice love in order to be able to obtain one of the infinity stones. Ultimately, Thanos traded love for power because he could not possess both.

But what is love? And why do humans possess the capability to love? If love is not a material that can be weighed, or measured, how are humans able to possess love? How do we even know that love exists? Does love exist? We know that love exists—not because humans have defined the term—but because the Creator provided the definition of love and humans live by that defined divine design.

Think about this: Oxygen—the air we breathe—exists whether humanity believes in it or not. In fact, oxygen exists even if humans call it something else. Humanity never created or invented oxygen; we merely discovered it. Likewise, love exists whether humanity believes love exists or not. Love exists even if humans call it something else. In fact, the definition of love is so confused by many humans because they believe it to be something it is not. Many people misuse the word love when they are actually referring to something else that love is not. And this is why it is important that the word love be clearly defined.

(1 John 4:7–8, NLT)
“Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God. But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love.”

(1 John 4:19, ESV)
“We love because he first loved us.”

Scripture makes sense. If GOD is love, then we would love because GOD first loved us because GOD created us. We are able to love because GOD is love and we are from GOD. If love is GOD, then we must know who GOD is so we can better understand what love is. So who is GOD? We will examine that in detail in Lesson 32, but for now suffice it to say that GOD is love and the absolute moral standard and therefore provides the definition of love (which we will soon examine and define). But we can also better understand love by examining what love is not.

Love Is Not An Emotion

Many people in the world claim that love is an emotion, but that simply isn’t true. Love affects our emotions and even causes us to produce emotions within us, but love is not an emotion in and of itself. You may claim that you can feel as if someone loves you, but love is not a feeling.

Love Is Not Sexual Intercourse

It is unwise to confuse sex for love and love for sex. Sex needs love to be relevant and meaningful; however, love does not need sex to be relevant and meaningful. A person can have sex with another person simply for the pleasure all while possessing no love for that individual. Examples of this, of course, is prostitution or rape. Such acts of sexual intercourse are meaningless because there is no love in the act of sex. That kind of sex serves a selfish purpose, but has no ultimate meaning. And of course, sex isn’t necessary for love to exist, to be relevant and be meaningful (I will expound upon this later when I define love). Now sex may be found in one of the definitions of love (Eros—I’ll get to this soon), but Eros is within the definition of love; love is ultimately selfless, sacrificial, and unconditional. A distorted desire is often misconstrued, mistaken as love. It is unwise to confuse lust for love.

Even if love is not an emotion, a feeling, or even the act of sexual intercourse, does it matter if love can be clearly defined? If so, why does it matter? Consider what is written:

(1 Corin. 13:1–3, NLT)
“If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I understood all of God’s secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn’t love others, I would be nothing. If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing.”

The definition of love matters because GOD is love and GOD created us in His image (Gen. 1:27). For without GOD, love would not matter because life would ultimately be meaningless and purposeless. And if we are to be loving beings, it is important that we understand the definition of love.

What Is Love?

(1 Corin. 13:4–8, NLT)
“Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. Prophecy and speaking in unknown languages and special knowledge will become useless. But love will last forever!”

Love Is an Action

Though it is not specifically and solely the act of sexual intercourse, love is definitely an action; it is something we do. Read verses 4–7 again and take notice of the fourteen different active descriptions the Holy Spirit (via Paul) uses to define love (patience, kindness, etc.). It’s important to note that this is not Paul’s definition of love, but the definition of love written by Paul while he was inspired by the Holy Spirit.

Love Is a Choice

The fourteen active descriptions are actions that we choose to do or not to do. There’s a nonsensical saying that states, “You can’t help who you love.” But yes—you can! We get to decide if we love and who we will love if we decide to love. And this is because we have free will (discussed in Lesson 41).

Also, there’s a saying that states, “I fell in love.” It sounds so romantic, but this is also nonsense. Love is not a hole or trapdoor we can fall in. You don’t fall in love any more than you fall out of love. Love is a choice. You choose to love. You choose not to love. People do not fall in love; people decide to love. People do, however, fall into the trapdoor of lust. When people talk about love at first sight, what they really mean is lust at first sight. Now is it possible to possess love for someone at first sight? General love? Yes. Complete love? No. Love in the sense that you want the best for someone? Yes. Love in the sense that you desire the best for someone despite all his/her flaws and mistakes? No. It’s not possible to love someone so deeply at first sight because you wouldn’t know the flaws and mistakes associated with the person. And how is it possible to truly love someone unless you love despite the flaws and mistakes?

Love, in a nutshell, is the good you will show toward someone and/or others. It’s treating someone else with the qualities described in 1 Corinthians 13:4–7. Take the Supreme Superhero (Jesus) as an example (after all, the Savior is the definition of love and the ultimate example of love):

(John 15:12–13, NLT)
“This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

However, the Supreme Superhero goes even further by commanding us to love our enemies (Matt. 5:43–48). And then the Savior did exactly that—Jesus went out and laid down His life for us by dying on the cross as our atoning sacrifice while being mocked, spat on, beaten, lacerated, and murdered by those who hated Him for no good reason. Love is caring more for others than for self because love is selfless. Love is sacrificial. Love is unconditional.

Love Defined

Unlike the English language, which uses the one word of love ambiguously, the ancient Greek language used different words to define the one word of love so that people wouldn’t be confused as to which definition of love should be inferred. Examine the four following words and their associated definitions:

• Storge/stergo—This is a familial love such as the love of a parent toward offspring and vice versa. Devotion can be a key word associated with this type of love.

• Phileo—This love is companionable and relational. It means brotherly/sisterly love or friendship. It carries the idea of two or more people who feel compatible with each other.

• Eros—This is the word for sexual or romantic love. In fact, this is where we get the word erotic. This word implies a sexual demand. And because it is unwise to confuse lust for love, it is imperative that we not confuse lust for Eros. The passion and intimacy of Eros is to be confined within the covenant bond between husband and wife, as was designed by the Designer. Lust is only about the pelvic thrust, to seek pleasure and fulfill a selfish desire. Lust is committed only to fulfilling a distorted desire whereas love (eros) is committed to fulfilling the needs of the partner within the covenant union. Therefore, be wise: pursue love and reject thoughts produced from the lustful lair of the Liar—they are lies created in the cave of the contemptible con artist and Counterfeiter, the Salesman that is Satan. Don’t buy the lies. Even a lustful look is adultery in the heart (Matt. 5:28). Money can’t buy you love. And no—that’s actually not from the Beatles—it’s from the Song of Solomon 8:7.

• Agape—This is the highest and deepest level of love. This is the ultimate love and is selfless, sacrificial, and unconditional. This is the love of GOD. This is the type of love all superheroes should possess.

(1 Pet. 4:8, NLT)
“Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins.”

Love covers a multitude of sins? Is that true? Yes! In fact, that is exactly what Jesus did for us:

(Rom. 5:6–8, NLT)
“When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.”

For love, compassion is the key and empathy is everything:

(Luke 23:34, NLT)
“Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.”

Jesus is able to see us as His precious people, not a pervasive problem such as a plague. The Savior sees us as eternal beings, not mortal enemies. The Supreme Superhero sees us as family who belong in His heavenly home, not failures to be flung in the fiery furnace. Hell is where evil belongs and will ultimately be quarantined, but GOD doesn’t desire for us to go to that awful place. In fact, the Lord desires for everyone to be saved and doesn’t take any delight in the destruction of the wicked (Ezek. 18:21–23; 33:11; 1 Tim. 2:4; 2 Pet. 3:9).

Jesus is our awesome, ardent advocate who absorbed for us the penalty of sin. Apostle Paul assists us by providing an important reminder that helps us put people into proper perspective:

(Eph. 6:12, NLT)
“For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.”

It is of the utmost importance that all superheroes remember this: we are to hate evil/sin, but we are to love people.

Conclusion

1. Love never fails.

(Song of Sol. 8:7, NLT)
“Many waters cannot quench love, nor can rivers drown it. If a man tried to buy love with all his wealth, his offer would be utterly scorned.”

2. Love perfects us.

(1 John 4:12–18, NLT)
“No one has ever seen God. But if we love each other, God lives in us, and his love is brought to full expression in us. And God has given us his Spirit as proof that we live in him and he in us. Furthermore, we have seen with our own eyes and now testify that the Father sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. All who declare that Jesus is the Son of God have God living in them, and they live in God. We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love. God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them. And as we live in God, our love grows more perfect. So we will not be afraid on the day of judgment, but we can face him with confidence because we live like Jesus here in this world. Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love.”

3. Love is supreme.

(1 Corin. 13:13, NLT)
“Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love.”

Reflection

If you want to be a superhero, you must possess love and choose to love others. A superhero can only be a superhero if the hero first and foremost possesses love for others. Do you possess love for others? If not, you resemble a villain. But wait—is that a fair statement? Consider the words of the Supreme Superhero:

(Matt. 12:30, ESV)
“Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.”

The late and great Martin Luther King Jr. once posed a powerful question to the clergymen of Alabama in his renowned letter, “Letter from Birmingham Jail.” He asked, “So the question is not whether we will be extremists, but what kind of extremists we will be. Will we be extremists for hate or for love?”

And that’s not a fallacy of false dilemma—if we’re not loving others, then…we’re not loving people. Therefore, I implore everyone to examine the motives and intentions of each and every choice/decision you make. Are you able to recognize good from bad? Right from wrong? Are you living a life of love or hate? For if you’re not living a life of love, what are you doing and what is your life? I choose to live an extreme life of love (not lust), and I urge you to do the same. Don’t scatter. Be a gatherer. Ironically, the best way to be a gatherer of people is to scatter seeds of love. How many seeds of love can you sow today?

So ask yourself, do you love others? From where did you get this desire to love? Do you feel compelled to act out from love? If so, why do you think that is? All superheroes possess love for people. If you love people, then you possess one of the qualities of a superhero and you just might be one someday!

Can Christians Lose Their Salvation?

If you would rather read this message, the words are provided below:

On May 07, 2019, The Christian Post published an article which begins by stating that “Dave Gass, a former pastor who most recently led Grace Family Fellowship in Pleasant Hill, Missouri, has renounced his Christian faith as a system rife with abuse that caused him ‘mental and emotional breaks.’ ”

Dave Gass walking away from Christianity (and thus Jesus) is important to examine and discuss for three reasons:

  1. This incident will create confusion and doubt for those who proclaim to be Christians.
  2. Atheists are already using this as ammunition to launch attacks on those who claim to be Christians in order to cause others to abandon the faith.
  3. This incident brings to light an important question: “Can a believer lose his/her salvation?”

Dave’s Explanation:

So, what were Dave’s reasons for walking away from Christianity? Though Dave’s social media accounts have either been changed, are now private, or deleted, he had posted his reasons on Instagram, which got copied and shared all over the Internet. I will post five screenshot images down at the bottom of this article that you can refer to, and I’ll be quoting from them in this article. Here’s a summarized list of reasons why Dave abandoned Christianity:

  • Dave said he had doubts since childhood regarding Greek mythology being so similar to the Bible.
  • He doesn’t like the way the Bible became canonized; consequently, he questions the inerrancy of the Bible.
  • Christianity didn’t provide him solutions to his problems; he doesn’t like suffering; he wants to be happy.
  • Prayers weren’t answered to his satisfaction.
  • He didn’t witness supernatural miracles; therefore, he believes Christianity is false.
  • His Christian parents were abusive.
  • He doesn’t like church politics and organized religion.
  • He said his marriage was a sham and never became what he was promised it would be.
  • Church people were “shitty” and hurt him yet non-Christians often showed him love and acceptance.
  • The church burdens people with fear, shame, and guilt in order to maintain control.
  • Christianity is an impossible standard and a system that doesn’t work.

Trenton’s Examination:

Ancient Mythology:
Dave spoke about having doubts since he was a child. But why did he carry his doubts into adulthood? Why did he carry his doubts to the pulpit before he preached? He never should have preached one message until he believed what he was preaching and he was confident enough to lead others in Truth. Also, his doubts regarding ancient mythology are easy enough to research. In fact, I published an article about the topic of ancient mythology: “Is Christianity A Copycat Religion?” I believe this reason Dave gave is either a cop-out or he was lazy in his research. Either way, this excuse isn’t a good enough reason to walk away from Christianity — especially when there is so much other evidence in favor of Christianity, such as the origin of the universe, a fine-tuned universe, the origin of life, intelligent design, consciousness, morality, free will, and the historical reliability and accuracy of the texts.

Canonization:
Is there reason to doubt Scripture due to the way the Bible became Canonized? No. From the writings of the apostles, disciples, and early church fathers, the texts considered authentic and sacred remained consistent. See my other article, “How Did We Get The Bible?” In addition, the canonized Bible we now have has withstood all attacks on it since the beginning. Further, if Dave rejects the Bible because of the way it came to be the Bible, he must also live consistent with this rejection by rejecting the vast majority of all history taught in schools. Why? Because the historical reliability of the Bible has been tested by the same criteria by which all historical documents are tested. There are specific tests that scholars, researchers, and archaeologists use to determine the authenticity of a historical document. These are the bibliographical test, the internal evidence test, and the external evidence test. And there’s more evidence for the Bible than almost any other historical document in the world with over 66,000 total biblical manuscript evidences, not to mention citations from other sources who quoted the texts. To live consistently, Dave would need to doubt almost all of what has been taught about history.

Problems, Suffering, and Happiness:
Are problems a problem for Christianity? Should we expect a life free from problems in this life on this Earth? Should the pursuit of happiness be our purpose? Jesus was honest and clear in that we will have problems in this world (John 16:33); Apostle Paul told us the same (2Corinthians 4:8-10). Jesus also gave us fair warning in advance that a life of sacrificial love will be required of us (Matthew 16:24-26; Mark 8:34-36); and again, Paul told us the same (1Corinthians 10:24; 2Corinthians 12:15; 2Timothy 2:10). Apostle Peter also told us the same (1Peter 2:21). Jesus never told us that this life would be without pain and suffering. In fact, logic and reasoning reveals that there is a reason for evil and there is a reason for pain and suffering. However, Jesus did tell us that our new lives on the New Earth under the new heavens will be complete with joy (Isaiah 25:8; Revelation 7:17; 21:4). Clearly, Dave had some unrealistic expectations regarding what his life would be like as a Christian. Dave claims to have read and memorized the Bible yet he expected what was never to be expected according to what is written. So, why did he expect such a problem-free life?

Unanswered Prayers?:
If Dave was upset about his prayers not being answered, it is only because he believed his expected outcomes are what is best and right. But if Dave knew what was best and right in all situations, then he would be GOD. He was angry because he didn’t receive what he wanted. The problem here isn’t unanswered prayers, but an unrealistic expectation regarding prayer. Therefore, we need to rightly understand prayer. While it is true that we should pray for others (Ephesians 6:18-19), it is important that we seek GOD’s will, not our own (Matthew 6:33; 26:39,42; Mark 14:35-36,39; Luke 22:42). Prayer is not a means of merely asking for what we want. GOD is not a magic genie and prayer is not the magic lamp by which to summon GOD. In the connection of prayer, the goal is to come into alignment with GOD’s will. Regarding prayer, it is important to remember that GOD always answers our prayers in one of three possible ways: yes, no, or not yet. And it is important to thank GOD for all the “no” answers. All the “no” answers eventually lead to the “yes” moment. When we pray, we must pray for the right reasons. Motive matters. For a detailed explanation regarding prayer, see my other article, “Superhero: Armor of GOD: Powerful Prayer (2/2)“.

No Miracles?:
Is the existence of GOD determined by a miraculous experience? No. It is written in Matthew 13:57-58 that Jesus didn’t perform many miracles in His hometown due to their unbelief. It is important to understand that people are often their own problems. Truly, we don’t know why GOD didn’t produce specific signs and wonders that Dave expected. Now, it is possible that Dave never witnessed a miracle. However, it’s also possible that Dave did witness miracles yet he never recognized them as being such. In fact, two of the greatest miracles of all time often get overlooked: the creation of the universe and the origin of life. But it simply doesn’t make sense to give up on GOD because GOD doesn’t do what we want Him to do. Consider what is written:

32 Two others, both criminals, were led out to be executed with him. 33 When they came to a place called The Skull,[a] they nailed him to the cross. And the criminals were also crucified—one on his right and one on his left. 34 Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.”[b] And the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice.[c35 The crowd watched and the leaders scoffed. “He saved others,” they said, “let him save himself if he is really God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.” 36 The soldiers mocked him, too, by offering him a drink of sour wine. 37 They called out to him, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” 38 A sign was fastened above him with these words: “This is the King of the Jews.” 39 One of the criminals hanging beside him scoffed, “So you’re the Messiah, are you? Prove it by saving yourself—and us, too, while you’re at it!” 40 But the other criminal protested, “Don’t you fear God even when you have been sentenced to die? 41 We deserve to die for our crimes, but this man hasn’t done anything wrong.”42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.” 43 And Jesus replied, “I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
(Luke 23:32-43) -NLT

Everyone had expectations regarding who the Messiah was supposed to be and what the Messiah was supposed to do. The ones who expected the Messiah thought that He would overthrow the Roman Empire by force and become King of the land in order to establish His Law with righteous living. Instead, the Messiah came as a suffering servant willing to be the sacrifice on our behalf. The people had accurate expectations, but those expectations were for the wrong time period. Jesus will come again, and when He does, He will come as the King who conquers. Likewise, Dave Gass had an accurate expectation of GOD as a miracle worker; however, Dave obviously held his unrealistic expectation for the wrong time period. GOD most certainly can and will heal people and restore us all, but His timing is precise and right. Some people will never know complete restoration until they dwell with the Lord on the New Earth under the new heavens. Consider also that the Roman soldiers and one of the criminals held an expectation of Jesus: “If you’re the Messiah, save yourself! And save us while you’re at it!” The critical criminal held an accurate expectation; however, it was for the wrong time period. Jesus did defy death, but it was days later when He rose from the grave. Jesus was able to save the criminal on the cross, and by Jesus sacrificing Himself on the cross, that criminal could have been saved if only he accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior like the other criminal on the cross had done. And this why the other criminal was saved and was promised eternal salvation. Thus, Luke 23:32-43 reveals that what we think to be best and right isn’t always so. Jesus could have dominated and conquered according to everyone’s expectations; however, according to GOD’s perfect plan and perfect timing, GOD doesn’t always meet our unrealistic expectations. It is written in Matthew 26:53-56 that Jesus could have called upon thousands of angels in order to defeat the Roman soldiers with ease and thus prevent Himself from being arrested. However, the Lord had a perfect plan for a perfect sacrifice and so Jesus allowed the Roman soldiers to arrest Him. Obviously, this did not meet His disciples’ expectations. We know this because it was at that moment they decided to leave Jesus and flee. Clearly, we cannot impose our expectations upon the Lord’s perfect plan. Understand this: people often desire a change in circumstance when GOD desires a change of heart, mind, attitude and character.

Dave Gass is upset because GOD didn’t perform the miracles he believed should have happened. I empathize with Dave’s desire to witness a miracle. In fact, it was one of my demands that needed to be met in order for me to become a believer when I had been an atheist. I refused to believe in GOD unless I witnessed a miracle. GOD didn’t have to show me a miracle (Luke 11:29), but He did — and not just one, but five miracles! I don’t know why GOD deemed me worthy to experience and witness His miracles; I know I didn’t deserve to experience GOD’s miracles. But perhaps GOD allowed me to experience miracles because He knew I would faithfully deliver the Gospel to as many people as possible. Only GOD knows. But I understand that the miracles I experienced were not only for me so that I could believe, but for others when they hear my testimony so that they might believe. To read or see my story, see my other article, “My Testimony: From Agnosticism, To Atheism, To Christianity“. However, the major issue here is the possibility of miracles. Are miracles possible? Dave claims he never experienced a miracle, therefore, Christianity isn’t true. And so he abandoned the Lord. But even without ever experiencing a miracle, logic and reasoning help us understand that miracles are most certainly possible. See my other article, “Miracles or Myths?“.

Abusive Parents?:
Dave listed his Christian abusive parents as one of the reasons for abandoning GOD. First and foremost, we need to determine what he believes to be the definition of abuse. But Dave didn’t provide that definition. We will give Dave the benefit of the doubt and assume that he had been abused. But even if he had been abused, how does that warrant a conclusion that Christianity is false? It doesn’t. Many people who have been abused have become overcomers and still believe in GOD. In fact, the very argument that abuse is wrong is an appeal to an absolute moral standard, which simply could not exist if GOD did not exist. What is wrong can only be known by the standard of what is right. We simply cannot know what is crooked unless we first know what is straight. But this issue simply cannot be addressed properly without knowing what Dave’s definition of abuse entails. After all, what if his definition of abuse meant that his parents were strict and set boundaries he believed to be oppressive (ex: you can’t drink any alcohol ever)? This excuse is simply that — an excuse. But it’s not a good one.

Church Politics & Organized Religion?:
Dave doesn’t like the religious rules and/or structure of what the church has become. Truth be told, I also despise church politics and man-made traditions. But Jesus did too (Matthew 15:1-9). I despise the rigmarole of religious rituals, pious performances, superficial celebrations, and pseudo-sacrifices. Truly, I don’t believe that our organized structure of what we call “church” is the way it’s supposed to be. Far too much money goes into operating a church building and programs instead of using that money to actually do the great commission. So, for once, Dave seems to have a valid argument. I’ve witnessed many churches who place their focus on the wrong areas in order to please people rather than GOD. I’ve witnessed fruitless arguments about curb appeal or marketing material. When I had been a youth pastor, I was even once told by my senior pastor not to wear my Goonies t-shirt because the skull and crossbones on the shirt would give the church a bad image. All of this is superficial nonsense misses the point of Christians living out authentic relationships with GOD and other people. Even the popular pastor, Francis Chan, left his megachurch because he believed the politics and religious structure watered down the true meaning of being a Christian. But Francis left his church in order to grow closer to GOD, not to escape. Regardless, I completely understand why Dave would feel this way toward the church in general. However, we must view the church as GOD intends us to view the church. And this means we must examine GOD’s Word to discover what GOD says about the church and how we should live according to His Word regarding the church. So, what does GOD say about the church and religion?

The church can either be seen as an individual Christian congregation or the total body of Christian believers. There is one universal church, consisting of all Christian believers, which takes the form of individual local churches in any given region. The many different individual churches are like the many different branches from the one tree. Of course, some rogue branches will go beyond the boundaries of what is biblically accurate and acceptable; GOD will cut those rogue branches off like a gardener trimming his hedges. The unity of the kath’ holou (the whole) or catholicus (universal) church is in Christ. Jesus is the head and the church is the body (Ephesians 5:29-33; Colossians 1:18). The body consists of all believers. We are all like individual jigsaw puzzle pieces that come together to form one picture. The unity of the church must not be understood sociologically or organizationally, but theologically. The church is one. One body. Just as the body itself has different parts (foot, leg, hand, or arm) yet makes up the whole body, the many different individual churches make up the one body of the universal church (1Corinthians 12:12-31).

The church ought to be pure because GOD’s Word tells us to distinguish ourselves between the holy and the common, the sinner and the saint (Leviticus 20:7-8; Ezekiel 44:23; 2Corinthians 6:14-16); righteousness is the goal. Though righteousness is the goal, the church is stained with sin and will never be able to achieve that pure status in this life; however, our inability to attain holiness does not provide reason for sin nor excuse the sin (Romans 6). So long as the church is striving to be righteous, the unintentional sins can be overlooked and forgiven. In fact, one cannot receive forgiveness unless that person forgives. Forgiveness is fruitful and intercession is important (Psalm 130:3-4; Jeremiah 31:31-34; Matthew 6:14-15; 18:21-35; Mark 11:25; Luke 23:34; Deuteronomy 9:18-20; Job 42:10; 1Timothy 2:1). The church will not become holy until the body is connected to the head at the end of age; consequently, the church must expect to find itself including both saints and sinners. To attempt a separation in this life is premature, improper, and unloving. The individual churches are hospitals for sinners, not a supercilious society of saints. For the saints, however, the individual churches act as recharging stations and help the saints to acquire what they need so they can go back out into the world. For the sinner, it is comforting to see that the saints are also in need and are not perfect. For the saints, it is comforting to see sinners who desire to become saints. The universal church is made up of sinners who will one day become saints, new saints, and older and experienced saints. But if the church is not defined by holiness, what is its distinguishing feature?

To believe in the church is not to trust in the institution of the church, but to affirm that the church is ultimately called into being by GOD, with a mission and authorization which derives from GOD. What truly matters is the great commission. The distinguishing feature of the church should be both the preaching of the gospel and the fruit that becomes evident from the seeds of love planted. The church is not an extension of Christ, but is united with Christ, and called and commissioned by Him to serve the world. The church is thus seen as an event, not an institution. A building does not make the church; rather, the people make the church and then buildings just happen to be built in order to accomplish the great commission. Jesus made disciples and then those disciples became the church. The disciples made more disciples and then those disciples did the same. Every believer is called to be equipped, enabled, empowered, enhanced and emboldened in order to accomplish the great commission. Individual churches are made up of those who are teaching and those who are learning; however, those who are learning are never to stay as the learner. We are all called to grow the church and advance GOD’s Kingdom. Every learner should eventually become a teacher and preacher. They are called in a special way to make the church present and operative where only through them can the church become the salt of the Earth. The church is made up of parts who should act as a whole. The distinguishing feature of the church is the message of the Gospel while performing acts of love.

Marriage?:
Dave listed his “sham” of a marriage as one of the reasons he abandoned Christ. Dave said it was not what he was promised it would be. However, Dave did not clarify what he was promised. What was he promised? I’m certain that what he committed to was for better or for worse. But sadly, he didn’t desire to stay true to his own promise of “or worse.” We simply don’t know if Dave put forth the effort to be faithful to his wife; however, the deacon of his church, Justin Tuttle, tweeted that Dave committed adultery and was unfaithful to his wife (image at bottom of article). This makes sense now as to why Dave would want to walk away from the Lord; GOD’s standard is now at odds with Dave’s desires. GOD’s Word clearly tells us that male and female become one in marriage (Genesis 2:24) and that divorce covers a person with injustice (Malachi 2:16). Except in a case of sexual immorality, divorce is adultery. And whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery (Matthew 5:31-32; Luke 16:18). Two become one in marriage. What GOD joins together, no one should separate. Moses only permitted divorce due to hardness of hearts, but that was never the design (Matthew 19:3-12; Mark 10:2-12). Adultery is abhorrent. Everyone who looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. Discern the difference between lust and love. Marriage must be respected by all, and the marriage bed kept undefiled, because GOD will judge immoral people and adulterers (Genesis 2:24; Exodus 20:14; Leviticus 20:10; Deuteronomy 5:18; Proverbs 5; 6:20-35; 7; Matthew 5:27-28; 1Thessalonians 4:3-8; Hebrews 13:4). The Bible affirms that we must defend marriage. See my other article, “Defending Marriage“.

Christians Are Bad; Non-Christians Accept Him?:
Dave Gass said church people are “shitty” people. But what he failed to mention is that it’s not “church people” who are the problem. It’s all people. GOD’s Word clearly tells us that no one is without sin and we all need Jesus (Romans 3:23). The church is not an elite club for saints. It’s a hospital for sinners. Of course you’re going to encounter people with problems! But as a pastor, you should be filled with love for people and not hatred. Like Jesus when he looked upon the crowd with compassion (Matthew 9:36), a pastor should also look at his congregation and staff with that same compassion and understanding. Dave, upon making his claim of Christians being crappy people, became the very hypocrite he despises. Dave is now the person who doesn’t accept people. Also, it’s worth pondering on why the non-Christians accept him. Do they accept him because they validate his adultery? They would like to call it freedom. After all, many non-Christians don’t live by the absolute moral standard.

The Church Is Controlling?:
Dave says the church only tries to maintain control via fear, shame, and guilt. But is that true? There is a big difference between conviction and condemnation. I don’t know what Dave was doing as a pastor, but a pastor’s duty is to preach the Word of GOD and to teach what it means to the congregation. Teaching Truth can lead to conviction, but a true teacher of the Word does not use manipulation and does not bring judgment of condemnation. There is one Judge and that is the Lord. Teaching Truth is not a method of maintaining control over anyone’s life; on the contrary, the Truth sets people free (John 8:32). A relationship with GOD is out of love, not fear. Examine what is written:

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. 10 In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us. 13 By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. 15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.16 So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. 17 By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. 19 We love because he first loved us. 20 If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot[a] love God whom he has not seen.21 And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.”
(1John 4:7-21) -ESV

13 For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. 14 For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another.”
(Galatians 5:13-15) -ESV

Dave claims the church is controlling. But the truth is that sin is controlling and those who practice sin are slaves to sin (John 8:34). I believe that Dave allowed himself to get tangled into the snare of sin and started calling evil good and good evil. If that is the case, woe to him (Isaiah 5:20).

Christianity Is An Impossible Standard & System That Doesn’t Work?:
Does the absolute moral standard set an impossible standard? Yes. But that should be expected if you believe the Bible to be true. That’s the point GOD made when Jesus had to do what we were incapable of doing in order to save us from ourselves. In this sinful and fallen state we all live in, we are incapable of living perfect holy lives. But does that mean that Christianity is a system that doesn’t work? To answer that, we need to know what Dave believed Christianity was supposed to do for him. From the reasons he listed, it seems evident he believed Christianity was supposed to be a cure-all for this present life on this Earth. Christianity doesn’t work if you desire to escape pain and suffering in this life on this Earth. Christianity doesn’t work if you want to be your own god and fulfill your every desire in order to pursue pleasure and feel happy. But Christianity most certainly does work if you desire to grow closer to GOD every day, become a better person every day, and eventually escape pain and suffering by living in eternal joy with the Lord on the New Earth under the new heavens. It all depends on what you believe Christianity is supposed to do for you. What are your expectations? Are they realistic? Are they in alignment with what GOD’s Word says?

Conclusion of Examinations of Explanations:

Dave Gass forced religion (not true relationship) upon himself when he didn’t truly believe. He said so himself — he faked it. He also filled his mind with unrealistic expectations and then got upset because his desires and/or fantasies weren’t fulfilled. I completely understand why he crashed and burned. Did Dave make the right choice by stepping down from being pastor? Yes. He never should have been a pastor. But did he make the right choice by abandoning Christianity (and thus Jesus)? No.

I don’t believe Dave is a devil in disguise. I don’t believe he had malicious intent. In fact, I believe he started with good intentions. However, good intentions can travel in the wrong direction. I do believe he was selfish and pursued his own pleasure and happiness over purpose. I believe he was unwilling to sacrifice in order to live the life that a pastor must live. He was not content with placing others before himself, and this is why he became miserable. In fact, his deacon stated that he had an affair and became an adulterer. And Dave did ramble on about his marriage causing him misery, so it’s plausible. But until Dave Gass admits that himself, he’s innocent until proven guilty.

Because of this incident (and many others like it), it’s important to remember what is written:

“Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness.”
(James 3:1) -ESV

“Jesus said to him, ‘No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.’ ”
(Luke 9:62) -ESV

Here are some important things to consider from this incident of a pastor falling away:

  1. Do you have doubts? Do you have questions? Ask questions! But if you ask questions, you should also be willing to pursue the answers with complete commitment.
  2. Identify unrealistic expectations and deal with them! Don’t try to push them down and cover them up. Write out all expectations you have and examine each one to see if any are unrealistic and/or unbiblical.
  3. Examine your motives. See my other article, “Superhero: Motive matters“. Why do you believe what you believe? Why do you do what you do? What’s your ultimate end goal? What do you hope to achieve or accomplish? Is your motive loving? Is your motive selfish or selfless?
  4. Do you have accountability or do you try to do conquer all your battles by yourself? The lion seeking to steal, kill, and destroy (1Peter 5:8; John 10:10) desires to find isolated victims. Don’t go into battle by yourself.
  5. Head knowledge is not enough! It is not enough to know the Bible. Satan knows GOD’s Word yet never took it to heart. Satan even used Scripture to try to tempt Jesus (Matthew 4:6). Knowing what the Bible says doesn’t mean you understand what it says. And even if you understand what it says, you must be willing to live in obedience to GOD’s Word. Are you willing?
  6. Are you being controlled? Are you a slave? Many people don’t believe they’re slaves, but they are. See my other article, “Break Every Chain“.
  7. We need to pray for Dave Gass (in a loving way). May he realize where he went wrong, repent, and return to the Lord with all his heart. Let’s not condemn him to Hell. It’s not our place to do that. Until his set time, he still has time to come into a right relationship with the Lord.
  8. We need to pray for all the people who will inevitably be shaken by this incident. May this only help people to realize the seriousness of what is to come and how we need to be prepared (Matthew 24:24). It is written that many people will be led astray due to false teachers and false doctrines. But may the Holy Spirit guide people in wisdom and Truth so they won’t be led astray due to the decision of Dave Gass.
  9. We need to pray that truly righteous leaders will rise up and lead for the right reasons.

Can A Believer Ever Lose His/Her Salvation?

Well, we possess free will, right? At any time a person decides to leave, GOD will not keep that person captive and force him/her to stay. Of course, GOD will continue to send reminders their way and pursue them with love. GOD will always continue to watch to see if they desire to return. The ones who leave the beautiful knowledge and relationship of the Father will end up wallowing in mud and muck. But if they ever decide to repent and return to the Father, GOD will see them coming and run toward them in order to accept them once again (read Luke 15:11-32). But I am convinced that a true believer would never abandon this gift of grace. The humbling knowledge of my sin when compared to the greatest gift of grace leaves me awestruck and full of joy to know of GOD’s love for me. Why would I ever leave that? The ones who leave Christ after having come to Him never truly knew Him. People leave Christianity because of their offense to other people or the way people have chosen to operate a religious institute. A person would never leave Christianity because he/she knew Christ unless that person despised being loved. Therefore, because truly knowing Christ will ultimately prevent someone from walking away, I would say that once someone is truly saved, that person will always be saved. I believe the act of being saved is what needs to be put into question, not the act of losing salvation. Was the person ever truly saved? Did the person truly say “yes” to Christ and a complete life transformation? Or did the person say “yes” to a mere moment in order to feel better? When uncommitted followers experience difficulties and no longer possess good feelings, I believe they are walking away from their perceived notion that Christianity is a cure-all concoction. When people walk away, I find that it’s usually because they had desired GOD to be a genie in a magic lamp who exists to grant their wishes. When people don’t get what they want, they tend to go somewhere else to fulfill their desires. I don’t believe a true follower of Christ can lose his/her salvation. I do believe, however, that people claim to be saved when they never were. Did they truly let go and let GOD lead? Did they truly submit their lives and allow Jesus to take the lead? Did they truly allow the Holy Spirit to fill them with conviction and guide them? I’ve never met one fully devoted follower of Christ who ever walked away. Why? Because to truly know Jesus is to truly know the greatest gift we could ever receive. Having knowledge of this, where would one go? And why? Certainly, it’s not because the person knew Christ. Even in Apostle Peter’s case where he abandoned Jesus prior to the crucifixion, Peter only abandoned Jesus out of fear because Jesus wouldn’t allow them to fight (Matthew 26:52-56). If a person can’t fight, they will choose flight. But even when Peter abandoned Jesus, he followed Him out of love and concern (Matthew 26:58). This is not the case with Dave Gass. Dave chose to walk away because he wasn’t happy. But I’m not happy in every occasion, but I would never abandon the One and only Source of Life and Light just because I’m not getting my way. Now that I know Jesus and understand what He taught, my decision to follow Christ is not based upon what I get from Christianity. Just as the Lord had said, “it is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35).

It all boils down to relationship. Do you truly know Jesus? Do you truly trust in the Lord with all your heart?

Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’ ”
(Matthew 7:21-23) -ESV

Greater than hearing or knowing GOD’s Word is actually living it out (Romans 2:13; James 1:22-25). Obedience is better than sacrifice (1Samuel 15:22). However, relationship is greater than religious acts (Deuteronomy 6:5-6; Matthew 6:1; 22:36-40). Here’s the crucial question: do you only know of Jesus or do you truly know the Lord (John 8:19; Matthew 16:13-17)?

When a person believes and accepts Jesus as Lord and Savior, that person is sealed by the Holy Spirit, who guarantees our salvation. Revelation 6:17 asks an important question: Who is able to stand at the End of Days? Of course, everyone will stand — they will stand in front of the great white throne of judgment (Revelation 20:12-14). But GOD marks His children to be saved (Revelation 7:3; 9:4). This seal of GOD is confirmation that we have been examined and inspected. Once inspected, we are approved and then sealed for security purposes, protected from tampering, and authorized by the King (Ephesians 1:13-14; 4:30; 2Corinthians 1:21-22). A seal can represent a finished transaction (Jeremiah 32:9-10; John 17:4; 19:30); it can represent ownership (Jeremiah 32:11-12; 2Timothy 2:19); it showcases security (Esther 8:8; Daniel 6:17). The Lord knows who is sealed for protection; the Lord knows His children (Exodus 12:1-13; Ezekiel 9:4).

GOD may allow someone to wander knowing that he/she will repent and return (as was the case in the Prodigal Son of Luke 15:11-32), but no one who is truly saved can ever be taken away by Satan or the world. Remember what is written:

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.”
(John 10:27-30) -ESV

Never Give Up!

The main theme throughout the Bible that runs parallel to the Good News of salvation is the need for endurance. We must endure until the very end, remaining faithful and obedient (Matthew 10:28; 1Corinthians 9:24-27; Philippians 3:14-16; 1Timothy 6:11-16; 2Timothy 4:3-5; Hebrews 10:35-39; 2Peter 1:5-11; Revelation 3:16).

The Frog In Your Jar

If you prefer to read this message, I have provided the words below:

This is a message about forgiveness. And as stated in the hilarious 2005 movie, Just Friends, “forgiveness is more than saying sorry.”

But why is forgiveness more than saying sorry? Let’s investigate…

“The ways of right-living people glow with light; the longer they live, the brighter they shine.”
(Proverbs 4:18) -MSG

The longer we live, the more we experience and the longer we practice living; therefore, the longer we live, the better at life we should be. GOD provides new and different ways for us to collect wisdom as we travel through our journey in life. Here’s some wisdom I have for you: you poop. (I know — insightful, right?) And you poop because your body has a filtering system: your body keeps the nutrients from the food you consume and it discards the rest. Your body rejects and tosses out what you don’t need; therefore, you poop. Just as our bodies have a filtering system for the food we eat, we are meant to live our lives with a filtering system for our minds that keeps the good and discards the bad. After many years of living and filtering, we will become as a safe with stored treasures within our minds. If we travel through life only keeping what is good and ridding of what is bad, we will be a collection of what is good at the end of our lives. Sadly, many people collect the bad and refuse to let go of it and end up as a jar full of poop.

Have you ever caught fireflies (lightning bugs) and put them in a jar? If you catch enough of them, that jar will turn into a lantern. We are like a jar that can either be filled with fireflies or poop. The jar is the Christian; the firefly is the good in life. The longer we live, the more fireflies (good) we collect and put in our jar, the brighter the light will shine! We then become a lantern of light that shines into the darkness of this world – we will then attract those who are lost in the darkness!  The more we filter and the more good we store within us, the brighter we will shine!

Frog-in-jar-2

However, we must never put the frog (the bad) in the jar with our good (the fireflies) – the frog will devour the light-bearing fireflies! The negative thoughts you keep inside of you will destroy the good; the bad corrupts, contaminates, and eliminates the good you desire to keep. Peace will not be possible so long as the frog is in the jar with the fireflies.

We must filter and discard the bad! A refusal to forgive someone will rot you from the inside-out and rob you of your peace and  blessings. Do you have bitterness? Resentment? A desire for revenge? Anger? Those emotions are connected with a refusal to forgive. If you truly forgave someone, you wouldn’t harbor that bitterness or resentment within you. If you truly forgave someone, you wouldn’t possess a desire for revenge or wish for bad things to happen to that person. If you truly forgave someone, you wouldn’t celebrate due to that person’s downfall. If you truly forgave someone, your anger would have transformed into peace. If you truly forgave someone, your forgiveness would be revealed by your willingness to love that person. Is there anyone in your life whom you believe does not deserve forgiveness? You need to examine why you believe that person doesn’t deserve forgiveness.

Forgiveness. What’s it all about anyway? Well, forgive me, but it is my intention to take you out of your comfort zone…

Frog-in-jar-3

Do you remember the rock star, Alice Cooper? The master of Shock Rock who was considered by many to be the ultimate showman? The Rolling Stone Album Guide once called Alice Cooper the world’s most “beloved heavy metal entertainer.” Well, the master of Shock Rock shocked many when he opened up in an interview in March of 2006:

“I used to celebrate moral decay, the decadence of it. I can look back on what I did then and what I’m doing now and they’re two different things. But at the time I was the poster boy for moral decay, you know. So yeah, I’ve got a lot to be forgiven for… Out of ignorance, I thought I was doing the right thing. I was totally in agreement that every guy should sleep with every girl and drink as much as they can. I don’t believe that now. I don’t believe in it, because I see how destructive it is.”
(Interview – KNAC.com)

Frog-in-jar-4

Alice Cooper admitted that he needed to be forgiven. But who doesn’t need to be forgiven? Don’t we all need to be forgiven?

“There is not a righteous person on earth who always does good and never sins.”
(Ecclesiastes 7:20) -Voice
[see also: 1Kings 8: 46-50; Psalms 143:2; Proverbs 20:9; Romans 3:10]

What have you done and why do you need to be forgiven? I can think of many things I’ve done in my past that were evil. And by the way, if your actions aren’t done out of love, then they’re evil. Have you ever made a selfish decision? To be selfish is to be evil because GOD commanded us to be selfless and to love others. And to love others, we must place them above ourselves. Read the following Scriptures and ask yourself if you are in alignment with GOD’s Word: Matthew 16:24-26; 23:11-12; Mark 8:34-36; Luke 9:23-25; Romans 9:1-3; 1Corinthians 10:24; 2Corinthians 6:3; 12:15; 2Timothy 2:10.

Are you in alignment with what is written in GOD’s Word? How often do you place yourself before others and make decisions to serve yourself? The story in Matthew 18:21-35 should help us all to understand the importance of forgiveness:

“Then Peter came to him and asked, ‘Lord, how often should I forgive someone who sins against me? Seven times?’
‘No, not seven times,’ Jesus replied, ‘but seventy times seven!’
‘Therefore, the Kingdom of Heaven can be compared to a king who decided to bring his accounts up to date with servants who had borrowed money from him. In the process, one of his debtors was brought in who owed him millions of dollars. [10,000 talents: a single talent was worth about 20 years worth of labor; about 2,000 lifespans.]
He couldn’t pay, so his master ordered that he be sold—along with his wife, his children, and everything he owned—to pay the debt. But the man fell down before his master and begged him, “Please, be patient with me, and I will pay it all.”
Then his master was filled with pity for him, and he released him and forgave his debt. But when the man left the king, he went to a fellow servant who owed him a few thousand dollars. [100 denarii. A denarius was equivalent to a laborer’s full day’s wage. So, about 100 days of labor.]
He grabbed him by the throat and demanded instant payment. His fellow servant fell down before him and begged for a little more time. “Be patient with me, and I will pay it,” he pleaded. But his creditor wouldn’t wait. He had the man arrested and put in prison until the debt could be paid in full. When some of the other servants saw this, they were very upset. They went to the king and told him everything that had happened. Then the king called in the man he had forgiven and said, “You evil servant! I forgave you that tremendous debt because you pleaded with me. Shouldn’t you have mercy on your fellow servant, just as I had mercy on you?”
Then the angry king sent the man to prison to be tortured until he had paid his entire debt. That’s what my heavenly Father will do to you if you refuse to forgive your brothers and sisters from your heart.’ ”
(Matthew 18: 21-35) -NLT

When Jesus told us to forgive someone seventy times seven times, He did not instruct us to forgive someone 490 times but not on the 491st offense. If you were to count how many times you forgave someone — especially up to a number so high as 490 — one would almost certainly only be counting with intentions of being able to counter attack or walk away once incident #491 came about. Plus, why would we count how many times we have forgiven someone if we have truly forgiven that person? Would we allow that frog in our jar? Would we allow ourselves to be consumed with the details of our forgiveness and hang onto the heavy burden of weighty numbers?

The point Jesus was making is the same point He made when He instructed us to turn the other cheek, give someone our clothes, walk the second mile, give freely, and love our enemies (see Matthew 5:38-48). We are not to condemn someone for their sin(s) because we are not the Judge (see Luke 6:37-38). [Of course, that doesn’t mean we can’t point out sin in someone’s life, it just means that we are not the ultimate Judge who should make the judgment as to whether someone is sentenced to Heaven or Hell.] The point of forgiving someone is to clean the slate, not to keep tallying up numbers on the slate. We are to go above and beyond in our love. Forgiveness isn’t a trade defined by special stipulations that would bring the act of forgiveness to be null and void if someone stumbled. Forgiveness is not quid pro quo; we do not forgive a person in order to receive what we perceive to be a right response that would please us. We are not to forgive someone in order to make that person act a certain way that pleases us.

Christ Jesus died on the cross for our sins. Jesus forgave us even though He knew of the evil we would commit. With all the wrong that we have done in our lives, we have built up a debt that we can never repay; however, Jesus forgave us and cleared our entire debt!

Forgiveness is only possible with love. Is there someone in your life you believe does not deserve forgiveness? …If someone came to mind when I asked you that question, you need to let go and finally forgive. It’s time. From a spiritual standpoint, you are withholding GOD’s blessings for yourself because of your inability to forgive someone whom Jesus has already died for and forgiven. It’s wasted energy. Even if the person you’re thinking of is completely evil in your sight — perhaps a murderer? — your unwillingness to forgive is only placing a frog in your jar, devouring your peace and light, and causing you more pain.

Ponder on the person you have trouble forgiving. Why does this person desire to hurt you? Or does this person desire to hurt you at all? Is it possible that he/she does not have intentions to harm you, but that you get hurt because of miscommunication? But if this person does have malicious intent towards you, perhaps that person sees in you what he/she wishes that person could be. Perhaps that person is so wrecked and pained within that he/she lashes out. Some people have never learned the proper way to express emotions in a healthy manner. Whatever the case, it is easy to forgive someone when you place yourself in his/her shoes and realize that he/she hurts others because that person is hurt and broken inside his/herself.

As a believer and a follower of Christ Jesus, I find it easier to forgive someone once I realize he/she is lost and needs to be saved. Compassion overwhelms me and I understand that he/she needs love. I used to be an atheist and full of anger, sadness, and confusion. I used to mock Christians. I can tell you from experience that I had lashed out at others because I was broken and hurt inside. But I got saved at the beginning of 2004. Because I used to be the person who was capable of [intentionally] hurting others, I can relate and understand. I now find it somewhat easy to place myself in others’ shoes. Because I once needed forgiveness (even more than I do now), I understand the need to forgive others. And I’m not saying that I never need forgiveness now that I’ve been saved and am a Christian. I still need to be forgiven by others. I still make mistakes and I still have potential to hurt others; however, if I do hurt others, it is never intentional. But I still have moments where I need to be forgiven — especially for my thoughts. And when I have those moments, I make sure that I confess, I repent, ask for forgiveness, and then make a conscious effort to once again live my life aligned with GOD’s will.

But what if the person you have trouble forgiving isn’t an unbeliever and lost but is a fellow Christian who proclaims to be righteous? It is not your duty to change a person. If you love the person and forgive that person, you have done your part.

The person who hurts you needs an example of Christ in his/her life. The people who hurt you need love. But you can only be that example to that person if you forgive him/her. Unfortunately, it’s rather difficult to express love to someone whom you harbor bitterness or resentment towards. Through Christ who strengthens you, you can forgive that person. You can release yourself from that prison. Pray to GOD and ask for strength to forgive. Pray to GOD and ask for patience. Pray to GOD and ask for endurance so that you may forgive for as long as it takes. Praise GOD! All things are possible through Him who strengthens us! Release that anger/resentment/bitterness and allow GOD’s blessings to flood your life. A refusal to forgive is like a dam that holds back water, but the water is our blessings. Don’t hold back the blessings of GOD any longer! It’s time for forgiveness.

“Forgive other people when they sin against you. If you do, your Father who is in heaven will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive the sins of other people, your Father will not forgive your sins.”
(Matthew 6: 14-15) -NIRV

“In prayer there is a connection between what God does and what you do. You can’t get forgiveness from God, for instance, without also forgiving others. If you refuse to do your part, you cut yourself off from God’s part.”
(Matthew 6: 14-15) -MSG

Do you have a frog in your jar? A frog in your jar will devour your light. Without the light, there is only darkness. With darkness comes pain, suffering, sadness, confusion, frustration, anxiety, stress, worry, doubt, fear, and hatred. And with all that, peace is simply not possible.

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
~ Martin Luther King, Jr.

“This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all. So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth. But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin. If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that his word has no place in our hearts.”
(1John 1:5-10) -NLT

Refusing to forgive is like drinking poison and hoping someone else will die. Forgiveness is unlocking a door and expecting to allow someone in only to discover that you are letting yourself out. Forgiveness is freedom; forgiveness produces life; forgiveness provides peace.

Out of all your past sins, which ones has GOD forgiven? The answer: all your sins have been forgiven. Jesus paid the price for you when He allowed Himself to be crucified on your behalf. Christians are the most forgiven people in the world; therefore, Christians should be the most forgiving people in the world. As Christians, we should forgive others’ transgressions more readily than the world would avenge them.

“Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.”
(Colossians 3:13) -NLT

“Forgive us for our sins, just as we have forgiven those who sinned against us.”
(Matthew 6:12) -NCV

What would happen if GOD forgave you in exactly the same way you are forgiving others at this time?

Forgiveness is undeserved and cannot be earned. Forgiveness is not a feeling; it is an act of the will. Forgiveness is not forgetting. Forgiving is an active process; it involves a conscious choice and a deliberate course of action. Forgiveness is not excusing the sin, accepting sin, or condoning sin in any way. Forgiveness says, “We both know that what you did was wrong and without excuse; however, I’m choosing to forgive you as GOD forgave me.”

Forgiveness may be described as a decision to make four promises:

  1. I will not dwell on this incident.
  2. I will not bring up in this incident again and use it against you.
  3. I will not talk to others about this incident.
  4. I will not let this incident stand between us or hinder our personal relationship from growing healthier.

When forgiving someone, do not merely say, “I forgive you.” Go on to describe the four promises that are packed into those three special words.

Remember: Forgiveness does not automatically release a wrongdoer from all the consequences of sin. Even Newton’s Third Law declares that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Choices create consequences. The ramifications of sin sometimes goes beyond the targeted person and affects others around the targeted person. If the sin is severe enough, it may cause a reaction from those who enforce the law. An example of this was seen in 2015 when the relatives of the Charleston Church shooting victims told the shooter, Dylann Roof, that they had forgiven him. Though the relatives had forgiven Dylann, it didn’t release him of the consequence of his sin. However, like the those family members of the shooting victims, you must do your part. In fact, Jesus commanded us to love our enemies (Matthew 5:43-48; Luke 6:27-36). To forgive someone means to release him/her from liability to suffer punishment or penalty within your own heart. To forgive someone, we choose to absorb as much cost as possible. Forgiveness provides opportunity for growth and refuses to allow evil to win.

To forgive, we must renounce sinful attitudes and unrealistic expectations. Either consciously or unconsciously, many of us withhold forgiveness because we believe the offender must earn or deserve our forgiveness or because we want to punish the offender or make him/her suffer. We may also withhold forgiveness because we want a guarantee that such an offense will never occur again. These attitudes and expectations are utterly inconsistent with the command to forgive as GOD forgave us. Just as GOD demands no guarantee from us regarding our future conduct, we have no right to make such a demand of others. We have no right to let our fears of the future delay the forgiveness of today.

Consider the fact that the apostle Paul had once been addressed by the name of Saul and he lived his life persecuting Christians (Acts 8:1-3). In fact, he had been present while Stephen had been stoned to death and he approved of the execution (Acts 7:58; 8:1). But even Paul was forgiven and provided a new life through Christ Jesus (Acts 9:1-22). And Paul acknowledged the fact that he might have been the least deserving (1Corinthians 15:8-10). Is there someone you believe doesn’t deserve forgiveness? The truth is that none of us deserved to be forgiven; however, Jesus was so loving that He forgave us and died for us even while we were still sinners (Romans 5:8).

Assess your own contributions to the problem. Again, do your part. In some situations, your sins may have contributed to a conflict. Even if you did not start the dispute, your lack of understanding, careless words, impatience, or failure to respond in a loving manner may have aggravated the situation. We often take GOD’s forgiveness for granted while we stubbornly withhold our forgiveness from others. If you’re struggling with unforgiveness, take another look at the enormous debt for which GOD has forgiven you. Or do you not realize that your sins killed Christ?

Now, we are commanded to forgive, but how is one able to forgive? Put forgiveness into practice. Forgiveness requires reconciliation and replacement. Forgiveness is an event that knocks down a wall that stands between you and a person who has wronged you. Forgiveness is a process. After you demolish an obstruction, you usually have to clear away debris and do repair work. It takes time and requires effort. Reconciliation requires that you give a repentant person an opportunity to demonstrate repentance and regain your trust. Setbacks and disappointments are likely to occur, but mistakes are acceptable so long as continuous effort is put forth to rebuild. But keep in mind that if you are coasting, you’re probably going downhill. In other words, unless a deliberate effort is made to restore and strengthen a relationship, it will generally deteriorate.

We should pursue reconciliation on three different levels: our thoughts, our words, and our deeds. We need to replace negative thoughts and memories with positive ones. Instead of dwelling on the negatives, pray about the positives. Pray the positives for the person you need to forgive. And when you pray the positives, speak them out loud so you say it with your lips and hear the positive words come out.

“And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me—everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.”
(Philippians 4:8-9) -NLT

And when talking to others about the person who offended you, make it a point to speak well of the person. As you verbally reaffirm your relationship and sincerely build up the other person, both of you should experience improved attitudes and feelings. And finally, put your actions where your words are. Loving actions can do much more than change your feelings; they can also communicate in unmistakable terms the reality of your forgiveness and your commitment to reconciliation. Be quick to demonstrate forgiveness with concrete actions.

“And Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.’ ”
(Luke 23:34) -ESV

Jesus prayed forgiveness for the very people who were murdering Him and ridiculing Him. Why? Because that’s love. Jesus said that those people didn’t know what they were doing. How is that possible? Obviously, they knew that they were crucifying Jesus. However, they believed they were accomplishing justice when they were actually acting out of sin and doing wrong. Is there anyone in your life who has ‘crucified’ you that you should be forgiving? What has GOD forgiven you for in the past? How serious are your opponent’s sins against you when compared with your sins against GOD? Read Matthew 18: 21-35 again. How does it apply to you?

“Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.”
(1Peter 4:8) -ESV

What does love look like? Love looks like a man wiping away your tears and forgiving you even after you left Him hanging on a cross for your sins.

There are two types of people I want to pray for and exhort to action:

  1. Do you want to be forgiven? If you are full of guilt, regret, sorrow, or shame and want to be forgiven, I want to pray for you, pray with you, and commit myself to encourage you from now on. I also want to challenge you: If you desire forgiveness from someone, I urge you to meet with that individual in person (or via phone if over a great distance), confess your feelings and desire to be forgiven, and then ask the person to forgive you. And remember: your ultimate forgiveness isn’t based upon the person’s choice to forgive you — Christ has already forgiven the repentant person. Your duty is complete upon asking for forgiveness. The Holy Spirit will do the work of change in the other person.
  2. Do you need to forgive someone? If you have a frog in your jar and you need the strength to open the lid and the courage to grab the frog and remove it from your jar, I want to pray for you, pray with you, and commit myself to walk this journey with you. I also want to challenge you: if you need to forgive someone, I urge you to meet up with that individual in person (or via phone if over a great distance) and confess the reasons why you desire to forgive that person. To do this, all you need to do is explain what happened and why you got hurt. The conversation is not to pile guilt on the other person, but to explain your pain. It’s as simple as that. And remember: the person you need to forgive does not need to accept your forgiveness for you to be able to release your frog. The person you need to forgive might not believe he/she needs to be forgiven and might reject your forgiveness. That’s not your problem. The Holy Spirit will deal with that person. You need only to release your frog. But keep in mind that forgiveness is only possible through love.

Please pray this prayer with sincerity: “Jesus, thank you for sacrificing Yourself on the cross and forgiving me. Your forgiveness covers all I have ever done and all I will ever do. You died for me; therefore, I will live for you and I will live for all others whom You died for as well. I repent of the evil ways that are not aligned with love and I commit myself to live a life of love from now on. For myself and others, I pray for the powerful miraculous healing of the heart as seen in Ezekiel 36:26-27. I forgive everyone who has ever hurt me and I give all of my bad burdens to You. For I know that if I hold a grudge, it will be I who will face The Judge. Thank you GOD for setting me free! I proclaim to live a life of love and righteousness from now on. Thank you, GOD, for all that You have done, all that You are now doing, and all that You are going to do. In the name of Jesus, by the power of GOD, I cast out any and all frogs of darkness that are currently in my lantern of light! I proclaim freedom from all bondage of past pain and declare a life of love, light, and peace! I will no longer allow negativity, pain, suffering, sadness, confusion, frustration, anxiety, stress, worry, doubt, fear, and hatred to control my thoughts and direct my actions! I will no longer allow the heavy burden of unforgiveness to weigh me down! I am free from the burden of unforgiveness! Amen.”

Understanding Revelation

Before reading this article, I highly recommend that you first read my other article: Should The Bible Be Taken Literally?

Also, before you begin reading this [lengthy] article, you should do two important things:
(1) Pray to GOD that the Holy Spirit would fill you with wisdom so that you may understand all that is written in His Word and this article.
(2) Commit yourself to investigating every Scripture that I quote. They are easy to skip over while reading this article, but don’t allow yourself to do that. The Scriptures I quote are necessary to understanding what is written.

Now that you have [hopefully] prayed and made a commitment to dedicating yourself to discovery, there are three important things that must be taken into consideration prior to discussing the contents of the book of Revelation.

The first and most important thing to consider is that no one completely comprehends the book of Revelation in its entirety. If anyone should tell you that he/she has decoded it and figured it all out, that person is unaware of his/her blind spots and is ignorant of his/her ignorance. Revelation is riddled with echoes of the Old Testament — especially the books of Daniel, Ezekiel, Zechariah, and Isaiah. Daniel had even admitted that he didn’t completely comprehend what he had seen and heard (Daniel 8:27; 12:8). Furthermore, GOD has not revealed everything to us because there will be things that will only be revealed at the end of days (Deuteronomy 29:29; Daniel 12:4,9; Matthew 24:36; Mark 13:32; Revelation 10:4). But having clarified that concern, may it be understood that a lot can be known about the book of Revelation simply because Revelation is a recap of the entire Bible. One cannot attain a good understanding of Revelation without first knowing the rest of the Bible. Revelation is last in the Bible and it is so for good reason.

A second important thing to consider in light of the first is that there are a few different ways to interpret the book of Revelation and the position depends upon the perspective of the reader. Over centuries, four main approaches of interpretation have developed: Preterist, Futurist, Historicist, and Idealist. Each approach has had capable supporters, but none has proved itself to be the only way to read the book. Regardless of what position the reader holds, we need to interpret with caution and care. We must remind ourselves that most biblical prophecy has both an immediate and a future application. We should never assume that we have “figured out” the future, and we should be careful before labeling current events or leaders as fulfillments of the book of Revelation. In addition to the interpretive approaches, there exists three major positions on the issue of the 1,000 years mentioned in chapter 20: Postmillennialism, Premillennialism, and Amillennialism. These different views about the Millennium need not cause division and controversy in the church because each view acknowledges what is most crucial to Christianity: Christ will return, defeat Satan, and reign forever! Whatever and whenever the Millennium is, Jesus will unite all believers; therefore, we should not let this issue cause division amongst us.

The third important thing to consider is the fact that Revelation, in common with other apocalyptic writings, makes frequent use of numbers. These numbers have special significance:

4: Usually refers to the earth or a place
6: Falls short of perfection
7: Perfection or completeness
12: speaks of GOD’s people
1,000: stands for ‘a great number’

It is also important to remember that John wrote Revelation around AD 95 from the island of Patmos while in exile (1:9). Emperor Domitian had John sent to an isolated place where his spirit may be broken and his words could not be heard. With that in mind, read Romans 8:31-39 and allow the truth of those words to fill you with courage. Though the Roman empire desired to squelch the spread of the Gospel, GOD’s plans always prevail. Through the book of Revelation, it was almost as if GOD had said to the Roman empire, “Your phalanx can never be tight enough nor big enough to push back the army of GOD. Your armor will never be strong enough nor thick enough to prevent the penetration of My Word. For every disciple you kill, more messengers will multiply. Though you imprison or isolate My messengers, My Holy Spirit can never be contained. I will transform stagnation into Revelation and in the depth and darkness in the soil of your dirty deeds of death I have planted seeds of life that will emerge and come to Light. Though you believe your empire to possess power, you will see My power come through you and ultimately consume you.” (See Isaiah 40:8; 1Peter 1:23-25)

“The more often we are mown down by you, the more in number we grow; the blood of Christians is seed [for the church].”
(~Tertullian from Apology, around AD 197)

The book of Revelation is a letter to seven churches in the province of Asia: Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea (1:11). This unusual letter is a revelation — an unveiling, uncovering, or revealing — of past, present, and future (1:19). Do not continue reading this until you allow what I just wrote to sink in. Find 1:19 in your Bible and highlight it. To understand Revelation, you must understand that the entire book is about the past, the present, and the future. After highlighting 1:19, find 1:8 and highlight that as well. And somewhere next to 1:8, write “Hebrews 13:8” and then go find that and highlight that as well. Was, is, and will be. Past, present, and future. This is the key to understanding Revelation [apart from knowing the rest of the Bible].

The fact that John was directed to write to seven churches is important because numbers are important in Revelation. Numbers are important in Revelation because numbers are often symbolic; symbolism is prominent within prophecies; Revelation is a prophetic book (1:3; 22:18-19); consequently, many of the numbers found within Revelation are symbolic. John was instructed to write to seven churches. The seven churches were real churches; however, the number seven represents completion. Because GOD has a message for seven churches, GOD also wants all churches to learn from the letters to the real churches (see 2:7,11,17,29; 3:6,13,22). And as we will discover, the message GOD wants all churches to know will be needed in order to digest the prophetic words that are to come in later chapters. So what message does GOD want all churches to know? To discover this, we must examine the seven letters to the seven churches.

Ephesus:
GOD states that they do the right works, but they have lost the love that should motivate the works. In other words, GOD’s message is that they need to get back to the basics of love being the core and that everything else will come from that love (see Matthew 22:36-40; 1Corinthians 10:12). Keep the passion burning! Keep the fire flickering flames of love! Don’t let the fire burn out! Keep the main thing the main thing! If you don’t have love, you have nothing (see 1Corinthians 13). A promise to the victor is the right to eat from the tree of life in GOD’s paradise, which is the great reversal and restoration of Genesis 3:22-24.

Smyrna:
They are persecuted and in poverty, yet GOD declares them to be rich (2:9; see also Matthew 5:10; 6:19-21). This church receives no rebuke because they are faithful. In fact, the main message to this church is this: when it comes time to either compromise or Christ, be faithful and do not fear (see Matthew 24:13; Philippians 1:21; James 1:12). We must endure until the end even unto death. Life is found only through Jesus. And that is perhaps why a promise to the victor here is that he/she will never be harmed by the second death (see 20:14-15).

Pergamum:
Though they reside at the location of “Satan’s Throne” — which is a difficult place to live — they held on to His name and did not deny their faith (2:13). However, GOD has some things against them. GOD’s main message: Cooperate with those around you, but do not compromise (see Leviticus 18:3-4)! Don’t be a stumbling block to others (see Numbers 31:16; Micah 6:5; Romans 14:13,21; 1Corinthians 8:9; 1John 2:10)! Essentially, you are either gathering or scattering, which means you are either helping Christ or helping Satan (see Matthew 12:30). So choose whom you will serve (see Joshua 24:15)! Jesus concludes by telling them that the victor will receive some hidden manna and a white stone with a new name on it. The hidden manna is Jesus Himself, the Sustainer, the Source of energy and the Bread of Life (see John 4:32; 6:47-51). Scholars are not certain about the meaning of the white stone, but among the most-likely interpretations that may fit the context is a suggestion that the white stones, with names of the recipients inscribed, were given to contest winners of the Roman sport races. This would explain why Jesus said the “victor” will receive it. The white stone inscribed with a personal name presumably served as a pass to a prestigious banquet only attended by the winners (see 19:9). This stone would have been received upon completion of the race. While this is not a particularly Jewish cultural reference, we do know of many biblical examples of the use of Greco-Roman cultural references as illustrations for and by the Jews (see Philippians 3:12-14; 1Corinthians 9:24-27; 2Timothy 4:6-8; Hebrews 12:1). The victor is the one who endures to the end and is granted access to the marriage feast of the Lamb (see “Marriage of the Lamb” for details).

Thyatira:
They have love, faithfulness, service, and endurance; however, they tolerate ‘Jezebel’ and commit sexual immorality. GOD gave ‘Jezebel’ time to repent, but ‘she’ does not want to repent. In 1Kings 16:30-32, we see that Ahab married Jezebel, who worshipped Baal, which caused Ahab to accept, condone, and even promote Baal. This is what I call sleeping with Satan because the one who worships idols and commits sexual immorality is having sex with sin itself. Be careful — the person who sleeps with the enemy and becomes pregnant from sin will give birth to death (see James 1:14-15). Because Ahab was unequally yoked (see 2Corinthians 6:14), Jezebel had contaminated and corrupted the people of Israel and even murdered many of them. You must flee from sexual immorality (see 1Kings 21:23-25; 1Corinthians 6:12-20; 10:8) and stay yoked only to a partner of righteousness who will travel in the same direction as you. Truly, the One we should be yoked to is Jesus (see Matthew 11:28-30). This letter concludes with a promise to the victor that he/she will receive authority over the nations (see 1Corinthians 6:2-3) and the morning star (compare 2:28 and 22:16). Again, Jesus is the prize.

Sardis:
GOD has harsh words for this church: Though there remain a few people who have not defiled themselves (3:4), the church at large is dead (3:1). They have a reputation for being alive yet they are dead inside (see Matthew 23:27-28). They are superficial saints with pious performances, only going through the meaningless motions of redundant rituals of the rigmarole of religion. They were admonished to be alert and strengthen what remains because He has not found their works complete (3:2). They were also warned that He will come like a thief in the night at an unexpected time (3:3; see also Matthew 24:43; Luke 12:39; 1Thessalonians 5:2; 2Peter 3:10). The letter concludes with a promise that the victor will be clothed in white and will walk with Jesus (compare 3:4-5 to 16:15; 19:8; 22:14 or see “Sixth Bowl” for details).

Philadelphia:
Though they have limited strength, they have kept His Word and didn’t deny His name (3:8). And GOD will work within their weakness (see 2Corinthians 12:9).  We must be faithful with what we have; we must be good stewards (see Matthew 25:14-30; Luke 12:48; 1Corinthians 4:2). This church receives no rebuke because they were faithful and kept His command to endure (3:10). This letter concludes with a promise to the victor that he/she will receive His name, which represents the loving gesture of claiming us as His children. The victor will also be made a pillar of the sanctuary. A pillar is used as support to strengthen a structure and make it more complete. Though we will not be the foundation, we will all be a part of what makes Heaven so great. And because we are a part of the structure, this implies our permanency in the place of paradise.

Laodicea:
This church receives no praise. GOD states that because they are neither hot nor cold and merely lukewarm, GOD is going to spit them out of His mouth (3:15-16). The people claimed that they need nothing because they are wealthy, but GOD called them wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, naked, and shameful (3:17-18). GOD proclaims His love, advises they accept His discipline, and admonishes them to repent. The insipid are intolerable; their indecisiveness leads to indigestion. Indifference leads to idleness. Fence-sitting, couch-potato, comfort-Christianity receives no praise! (See Hebrews 10:38; 12:4-13; Proverbs 3:11-12) In 3:20, Jesus tells us that He stands at the door and knocks, simply waiting for someone to respond and allow Him in. And when that person allows Jesus within, He will have dinner with that person. Why is this important? In Mark 2: 15-17, we see that this is how Levi — a tax collector — became Matthew, the disciple. Once we allow Jesus within and we fellowship with Him, hearing His Word in itself would be the meal we would be eating; consequently, being filled with the Bread of Life, life would exude out of our very pores and we would be on fire for Christ, thus incapable of being lukewarm. This letter concludes with a promise to the victor that he/she will have the right to sit with Him on His throne. This promise is to say that we will be part of the family and will share in His glory.

Summary of the seven church letters:
Each of the seven letters contained a promise to the “victor.” In order to receive the promises, you must be a victor. How do we become a victor? Stay in alignment with GOD’s Word and His absolute moral standard! Keep the faith and endure until the end! The only way to be a victor is to fight the good fight, endure it until the end, and finish the race. Everyone who finishes the race will be exhausted, but they will also come into rest. Just as GOD rested from His work on the seventh day (Genesis 2:2), we too will come into rest on our ‘seventh day.’ We can picture this life here on Earth as our six days of work and Heaven will be our seventh day of rest. Everything we accomplish in life here on this Earth within our ‘six days’ falls short of perfection. It is only in our ‘seventh day’ that we will come into perfection and receive rest.

Every church leader and congregation member will need to keep their faith and stay in alignment with the Truth of GOD’s Word and absolute moral standard for two important reasons:

  1. A lot will happen in the final days that will test our faith. Without knowing what to expect, you may be deceived and fall away.
  2. No one knows the day nor hour when Jesus will return.

Chapter 4:
John, “in the Spirit,” is invited into Heaven and sees GOD seated on the throne with 24 thrones around His throne and in those thrones are the 24 elders. Because 12 represents GOD’s people, and since “elders” refers to leaders in both Israel (Numbers 11:16) and the church (1Timothy 1:5), 12 of the 24 represent the tribes of Israel and 12 represent the apostles of Christ, mirroring the reference in the new Jerusalem (Revelation 21:12,14). The 12 from the Old Testament and 12 from the New Testament equal 24, which represent all of GOD’s people over time, whether under the Law of Moses or grace of Christ. The seven torches are the seven spirits, which represent the perfection of the Holy Spirit (see Isaiah 11:2). The sea of glass like crystal represents the purity and holiness of GOD. John also sees “four living creatures” (4:6) covered with eyes in front and back, which represents GOD’s ability to see all. They each have six wings (4:8). Four creatures; six wings. 4 x 6 = 24. There are 24 wings and 24 elders. Everyone is covered by the grace of GOD!

Chapter 5:
This chapter introduces the scroll with the seven seals. The scroll has writing on the inside and on the back. There is no wasted space and no room for words from anyone else. GOD’s Word is the only Word and the final Word (see 22:18-19). John discovers that no one is worthy and able to open the seals on the scroll — no one except the Lion from the tribe of Judah (Genesis 49:9; Micah 5:2), the Root of David (Isaiah 11:1), the Slaughtered Lamb (Isaiah 53:7) with the seven horns (omnipotent) and seven eyes (omniscient), which are the seven spirits (Holy Spirit) of GOD sent into all the earth (omnipresent). Of course, the One who is worthy is Jesus! And why is Jesus the One who is worthy? Because Jesus is the One on the throne; Jesus is GOD, the second person in the Trinity. (compare 4:10-11 with 5:12; see also John 10:30)

Introduction to the Seven Seals:
The first four seals reveal the four horsemen (see Zechariah 1:8-11; 6:1-8). There is debate as to whether any or all of what is pictured has already taken place or if it will happen sometime in the future. While conquest (6:2), widespread warfare (6:4), and devastating effects from famine on economies (6:5-6) have occurred throughout history since the first century AD, no catastrophe has devastated a full fourth of the earth, as is described in the fourth seal (6:8), at least not all at once. It is possible, however, that war, famine, plague, and the animals have killed a fourth of the earth’s population over a span of time. For a few reasons that will be explained later in greater detail, I hold the position that the book (or letter) of Revelation was written to help the first century AD Christians stay faithful; however, the depth of GOD’s wisdom in this letter is also for future events. It was first first century Christians, but it is also for us in this present time, and everyone in the future until Christ returns. Some parts of Revelation concern the past, some speak to us in the present, and some are for future events. I can make this claim confidently from the simple fact that the other prophets (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Micah, Malachi, Zechariah, etc.) spoke to the current situations of their time while also prophesying of the future. To say that the book of Revelation concerns only the past is [in my opinion] rather nearsighted and almost irresponsible. Many predictions from the Bible were made between 500—1,200 years in advance. An exhaustive study of the Bible reveals around 1,800 predictions: about 70% of the predictions are found in the Old Testament and about 30% in the New Testament. Different scholars have counted around 190 prophecies concerning the anticipated Jewish Messiah and Savior, around 50% of which were fulfilled at Christ’s first coming. A lot from Revelation must concern future events (see the section “The Angel and the Smaller Scroll” below). The “birth pains” spoken of in Matthew 24:5-8 and Mark 13:5-8 are the signs of the end of age and they match the descriptions of much of the first four seals.

First Seal:
Jesus opens the first seal and we see a horseman on a white horse, holding a bow (no arrows mentioned) and with a crown on his head. This horseman represents military, empire, or even political dominance. For reasons that will be explained later in greater detail, I don’t believe this horseman represents Jesus like the white horseman of 19:11-16 clearly does. One reason is that John saw Jesus open the seal and then saw the horseman immediately after. I believe this specific horseman to be the one from Daniel 9:27 (see Matthew 24:15-20) who brings in pseudo-peace that will lead to the abomination of desolation. It is that abomination that initiates GOD’s wrath and causes the great tribulation. This horseman is a demonic mockery of Jesus, who is the true white horseman.

Second Seal:
This seal pictures the release of a horseman on a red horse, which represents  violence, warfare and bloodshed. This horseman is empowered to remove peace (that was present for a short time in the first seal) from the earth and people will slaughter one another. This horseman serves as a mirror-image of one truth seen in two different time periods: in the first century with the Roman empire, but also in the future as well. Ponder on the greatness of GOD and you will realize that GOD explained the end times in a way that first century Christians would understand yet future Christians would also understand. (see Jeremiah 32:27; Matthew 19:26; Mark 10:27; Luke 18:27) Because it is written that a large sword was given to this rider, it seems to be a critique of the pax Romana (Latin for “Roman peace”). The Roman peace was both policy and ideology. Augustus Caesar had boasted that the Roman military machine had established a peaceful order to disparate lands and united the civilized world. But empires rise and empires fall. And peace enforced by the sword is not true peace at all (see Matthew 26:52). Just as the Romans used their swords for authority and judgment, Jesus’ sharp two-edged sword represents ultimate authority and judgment. GOD will have the last word. (see Hebrews 4:12; Revelation 1:16; 2:16; 19:15,21) In whom will you place your trust? (see Psalm 118:8-9) Sadly, humanity is going to place their trust in the empire (see “First Seal”), peace will be removed, and people will eventually fall apart and slaughter one another.

Third Seal:
This seal pictures the release of a horseman on a black horse, which represents famine. The horseman holds a set of scales, which represents unbalanced and unfair inflated prices in the market place. The economic crisis produces injustice and most likely chaos.

Fourth Seal:
This seal pictures the release of a horseman on a pale-green horse, which represents death; in fact, this is the only rider with a name and that name is Death. It is written that Hades followed after him. Hades is the greek version of the Hebrew sheol, which is the realm of the dead. Death passes with Hades (sheol) as a net behind him, gathering the dead. This rider comes because of the first three: wherever there is empire, warfare, and famine, death is sure to follow.

Summary of the Four Horsemen:
GOD uses what humans consider as their refuge to reveal His ultimate power and authority. What had once been humanity’s security blankets that gave them a false sense of security have now been turned upside down. The government they relied upon for their pleasure and benefits became the evil master who put them into hardship, the peace they enjoyed turned into war, prosperity and plenty turned into famine and misfortune, and the good life turned into death, which was no life at all. The four horsemen expose the corrupt and fragile idols for what they truly are.

Fifth Seal:
This seal reveals martyred people of the great tribulation (see 7:13-14). (See “Sixth Seal” for explanation regarding the great tribulation.) The people cried out and wanted to know how much longer it would be until GOD delivers His justice and avenges their blood. GOD tells them to rest a little longer because more must first be killed just as they had been. This reveals GOD’s patience and His desire to see more people come to Him (see 2Peter 3:9). It is written in 2Thessalonians 2:3-4 that rebellion and the man of lawlessness precede the Day of the Lord.

Sixth Seal:
There’s a lot of information and happenings packed into this one seal. To better understand this seal, see Isaiah 2:6-22; 13:10,13; Joel 2:10,31; 3:15-16, Zephaniah 1. When this seal is opened, a violent earthquake occurs, the sun turns black, the moon turns red, the stars fall to the earth like figs dropping from its tree, the sky rolls up like a scroll, and every mountain and island move from their places. Matthew 24:29 and Mark 13:24 tell us that the 6th seal events happen after the great tribulation. Therefore, the tribulation most likely occurred in the fourth or fifth seal. As for the stars falling to earth like figs, we know that this is the sign that Jesus is about to return (see Isaiah 34:4; Matthew 24:32-33; Mark 13:28-29). When the events take place, everyone will hide in caves and among the rocks out of fear from the wrath of the Lamb. Jesus’ first coming was love and Truth; His second coming will be Truth and justice. His second coming to us will bring us coming to Him for the final judgment. This section concludes by asking a very important question: Who is able to stand?

Are We In The Last Days?
According to some scholars, the “last days” began with the resurrection of Christ (see Acts 2:17; Hebrews 1:2). Two possible options to consider: the abomination of desolation must have occurred prior to or during the breaking of the first seal. So either the first seal was broken back when the Roman emperors demanded to be worshipped as gods or we are still awaiting for Jerusalem to have a Temple again and the abomination of desolation has not yet happened. Either the great tribulation already occurred when Christians were persecuted by the Roman empire or the great tribulation has not yet happened. Either way, I believe we are definitely in the last days because Christ already came once before and the next time He comes again it will be to bring everything to an end. Therefore, the question should not be as to whether we are in the last days or not, but the question we should be asking is, “Where are we in the timeline of the last days?” And that of course, is the great debate. I’ll provide my answer (opinion) to that question at the end of this article.

Those Who Are Sealed:
Chapter 6 ended with an important question: Who is able to stand? Of course, everyone will stand — they will stand in front of the great white throne of judgment (see 20:12-14). But GOD marks His children to be saved (7:3; 9:4). This seal of GOD is confirmation that we have been examined and inspected. Once inspected, we are approved and then sealed for security purposes, protected from tampering, and authorized by the King (see Exodus 12:1-13; Ezekiel 9:4; Ephesians 1:13-14; 4:30; 2Corinthians 1:21-22). A seal can represent a finished transaction (Jeremiah 32:9-10; John 17:4; 19:30); it can represent ownership (Jeremiah 32:11-12; 2Timothy 2:19); it showcases security (Esther 8:8; Daniel 6:17).

Who Are The 144,000?:
In 7:4, it is written: “And I heard the number of those who were sealed: 144,000 sealed from every tribe of the Israelites.” It goes on to list 12,000 from each of the 12 tribes; however, the 12 tribes are not the usual listed tribes (see Numbers 1:5-15; 1Chronicles 2:1-2). Judah is listed first because Jesus is the Lion of Judah. Dan is missing because Dan had a history and reputation for apostasy (1Kings 12:28-30). It most likely serves as a warning that only those who persevere to the end will be saved. Sadly, not everyone who starts the Christian race will finish the race. Regardless, we know that Israel is GOD’s chosen people and Israel will be redeemed and restored. (See Genesis 13:15; Matthew 19:28; Romans 11:23-26.) The number 12 represents GOD’s people; 1,000 represents a great number. 12 x 1,000 = 12,000 (a great number from each tribe). And 12,000 x 12 = 144,000 (a great number of all tribes of all GOD’s people). Regardless of who the 144,000 are, the important thing to know is that the seal of GOD is given to all believers (3:12; 7:3-5; 14:1; 22:4). We also know that the Jews are not the only ones who are to be saved — the gentiles will be grafted in (Romans 11:11-24; Ephesians 2:11-22; Galatians 3:26-29). We also know that Heaven constitutes a vast multitude of every tribe, nation, and language (Genesis 17:4; Revelation 5:9,11; 7:9). We should not allow the debate of the 144,000 to derail us from the main point: GOD’s people are sealed and protected from GOD’s wrath. Though our earthly bodies may perish, GOD’s people are promised a new spiritual body (1Corinthians 15:40-55).

Seventh Seal:
In 8:1, the opening of the seventh seal brings a long moment of silence as everyone becomes still in revenant awe (see Exodus 14:14; Zephaniah 1:7; Psalm 46:10). We can also say that this is the calm before the storm. The Day of the Lord begins with trumpets. Smoke, incense, and prayers go up and then justice comes down. In 6:10, the martyrs asked how long it would take for justice to come. The answer to their prayers now arrives (see more in “First Trumpet”). In 8:5-6, it is written: “The angel took the incense burner, filled it with fire from the altar, and hurled it to the earth; there were rumblings of thunder, flashes of lightning, and an earthquake. And the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared to blow them.”

The Connection:
The thunder, lightning, and earthquake together is an important sign. The three occur together for the first time at the conclusion of the seventh seal (8:5) and beginning of the first trumpet. The seven trumpets are actually contained within the seventh seal. The opening of the seventh seal reveals the seven trumpets. The sign is next seen together in 11:19 at the conclusion of the seventh trumpet and beginning of the first bowl. The seven bowls are actually contained within the seventh trumpet. So the bowls come out of the seventh trumpet just like the trumpets come out of the seventh seal. This can be compared to perhaps a set of Matryoshka dolls (Russian nesting dolls; stacking dolls) or even a telescoping ladder. Out of one comes another until the plan is fully unraveled and unveiled or revealed. The thunder, lightning, and earthquake sign is next seen together in 16:17-21 at the conclusion of the seventh bowl and beginning of the fall of Babylon and the coming of Jesus.

First Trumpet:
The seventh seal caused an angel to hurl fire to the earth. The first trumpet is the same action, delivered from the prayers of 6:10. The angel hurling down fire is doing this as the first trumpet blows; the events are tied together. If you recall, the martyrs of 6:10 asked, “how long until You judge and avenge our blood from those who live on the earth?” The first trumpet is the beginning of the judgment in order to avenge their blood. Once the trumpet sounds, hail and fire, mixed with blood, were hurled to the earth to burn up a third of the earth. Why was it mixed with blood? Because GOD is the avenger of blood because blood is life. (See Genesis 4:10; 9:4; Leviticus 17:11; Psalm 9:12; 72:14; 79:10; Isaiah 26:21; Ezekiel 36:18; Revelation 6:10; 19:2.) However, the real avenging of their blood doesn’t culminate until 16:3-6. The first six trumpets echo the plagues in Exodus 7-12.

Second Trumpet:
A huge rock like a mountain ablaze with fire was hurled into the sea and a third of the sea became blood and a third of the living creatures in the sea died. (see Jeremiah 51:25)

Third Trumpet:
A great star blazing like a torch fell from Heaven onto a third of the rivers and springs of water, turning the water bitter. People died from the water because it was bitter. This judgment seems to contrast the blessing and miracle at Marah (which means “bitter” in Hebrew), when Moses — because of the Israelites’ grumbling — threw a piece of wood into the region’s bitter waters and turned them sweet (see Exodus 15:23-25).

Fourth Trumpet:
A third of the sun, moon, and stars (see 12:4) were struck and were darkened. A third of the day and night was without light. (See Exodus 10:21-29; Amos 8:9; Mark 13:24.) This trumpet tells of an eagle crying out a “woe” to the ones living on earth because of what the final three trumpet blasts will bring. The next three trumpet blasts will each be a “woe.” The eagle symbolizes GOD’s imminent judgment swooping down on Israel’s enemies (see Jeremiah 48:40-42). The eagle is also meant to conjure up dread for the unrepentant — they might as well be called the walking dead — but also produce hope for GOD’s people — those who have been sealed (see Exodus 19:4; Isaiah 40:31).

Satan Wages War:
Between the fourth and fifth trumpets, there is a time period of Satan waging war against all of GOD’s children on Earth. In 8:13, we see the warning of the “woes” to “those who live on the earth” because of what will happen next. The next three trumpet blasts (fifth, sixth, and seventh) affect the people of the earth. If we compare 8:12 to 12:4, we can see that the third of the stars are affected because of Satan (dragon). In 12:1-6, we are shown that Satan desperately desired to prevent Jesus from ever being born and coming into the world. In Matthew 2:13-20, we see the events that took place. Satan used Herod in an attempt to kill Jesus and prevent Him from coming into the world. An angel warned Joseph and Mary and they fled to Egypt to escape Herod’s reach (thus fulfilling the prophecy of Hosea 11:1). Herod was so angry that he gave orders to massacre all the male children in and around Bethlehem who were two years old and under (which fulfilled the prophecy of Jeremiah 31:15 and coincides with Revelation 12:17). And this is why Satan was thrown from Heaven down to earth (12:7-9) and the reason for the ‘woes’ to those living on the earth (8:13). There is a ‘woe’ to those on Earth because Satan is now there, thrown down from Heaven, and he is furious. And for all of this, we know that Satan was thrown down after the fourth trumpet but before the fifth. Because in the fifth trumpet, Satan is bound and thrown into the abyss.

Fifth Trumpet:
The fifth trumpet is the first of three “woes.” A ‘star’ falls from Heaven to Earth. The key to the shaft of the abyss is given to him (star = him). Jesus had said He saw Satan fall from Heaven like a lightning flash (Luke 10:18); Satan was thrown out of Heaven down to Earth (12:9); however, this star is not Satan because Revelation always refers to Satan as the dragon or by name. In addition, it is written that the key to the shaft of the abyss was given to him. I believe the star is the angel who received the key from the Key Holder, Jesus. We know that an angel possesses the key to the abyss (20:1-3) and also opens the abyss after binding Satan and throwing him in. (Therefore, 9:1-2 is the same event as 20:1-3.) We also know that Michael was the angel who fought Satan and threw him down to Earth (12:7-9); therefore, this star is definitely an angel and most likely Michael. And this is why the abyss is opened (9:2) and the smoke and locusts came out. The abyss is a horrible place and that’s where Satan is imprisoned for ‘1,000 years’ (see 20:2,7). Here’s something to ponder: the abyss is so horrible that demons didn’t even want to go there (Luke 8:31)! The abyss is the bottomless pit or the depths (of the sea); it is the prison for Satan and the demons. Is it possible that the demons that begged not to go to the abyss didn’t want to go there because Satan was inside? Is it possible that Jesus didn’t send the demons to the abyss (Luke 8:32-33) because it wasn’t time for the abyss to be opened again? We don’t know. But what we do know is that once Michael unlocks the shaft of the abyss and it is opened, thick smoke comes out and the sun and air are darkened. Then locusts come out of the smoke (see Joel 1:1-2:11; Exodus 10:12-20) and are given power like that of scorpions to harm only the people without the seal of GOD (see 7:3). It would seem that having the “seal” is possessing the Holy Spirit (see Ephesians 1:13-14; 4:30; 2Corinthians 1:21-22). The main focus of the fifth trumpet is that unbelievers will be tormented. Perhaps only the unbelievers are tormented at this time because Satan is imprisoned in the abyss (see 20:3).

Sixth Trumpet:
This is the second “woe.” Four angels who had been bound at the great River Euphrates are released and kill a third of the human race by fire, smoke, and sulfur. John heard that the number of mounted troops was 200 million. It is written that the people who were still alive afterwards still did not repent from their evil ways. Like Pharaoh of Egypt (see Exodus 8:15,32), their hearts remained hardened.

The Angel and the Smaller Scroll:
The sixth and seventh seals are separated in the book of Revelation by two sections discussing a small scroll and two witnesses. In this first section, a “mighty” angel holds a smaller scroll and stands with his right foot on the sea and his left on land. Both land and sea are covered — GOD is in control. In 10:4, John is told not to write what the “seven thunders” had said. This (combined with Deuteronomy 29:29 and Daniel 8:27; 12:4,8-9) lets us know that we don’t have to understand every detail of Revelation; the point is made clear in 10:7 in that GOD’s hidden plan will eventually be revealed (after the seventh trumpet blast). It is at this point within this section that John is directed to take and eat the scroll (see Jeremiah 15:16; Ezekiel 3:1-3). Just as we have seen before, GOD’s Word is sweet as honey, but the truth is painful to digest. GOD’s love is sweet, but justice and judgment can seem rather bitter. Here’s the bitter truth: things will get worse before they get better. In the same way that Ezekiel received GOD’s Word with joy but also received an impossible mission to proclaim judgment to a hardened people, John, the seven churches, and all of us in the present day are called to preach a sweet yet bitter gospel that offers grace yet demands repentance.

The Two Witnesses:
John was given a measuring reed (see Zechariah 2; Ezekiel 40) and was told to measure GOD’s sanctuary but to exclude the courtyard outside the sanctuary because it will be given to the nations and will be trampled (see 22:15). Ponder on that for a moment. The temple had been destroyed in AD 70 and John wrote the letter of Revelation around AD 95. There was no temple when John wrote this letter, there is no temple right now, perhaps a new temple will be built in Jerusalem in the future(?); however, there won’t be a temple in the New Jerusalem because GOD is the sanctuary (21:22). We are to find everything we need in GOD. We ourselves will be the new temple because Christ dwells within us (1Corinthians 3:16; Hebrews 3:6; 1Peter 2:4-5). Two become one — that is what the marriage is all about (see 19:7-9 and Genesis 2:24; Ephesians 5:31-32). There is no courtyard outside the sanctuary because Christ is the sanctuary and you’re either in or you’re out (Matthew 12:30). If in Christ, you will find protection (you have been sealed); however, outside the safety of Christ, you are subject to the world and its ways, which is devoid of GOD’s love, mercy, and grace.

But it is written (11:2) that the holy city will be trampled for 42 months (3 and a half years of 30-day months). Some say this refers to the great tribulation that will happen for half of seven years. Truly, we don’t know. In 11:3-5, it is written that GOD will empower two witnesses to prophecy for 1,260 days (3 and a half years of 30-day months) and they are “the two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth. If anyone wants to harm them, fire comes from their mouths and consumes their enemies.” (See Jeremiah 5:14) Whether the 42 months / 1,260 days / 3.5 years are literal or not does not matter in the bigger picture. We must remember to keep the main thing the main thing. The timing of GOD’s plan is fixed and GOD will be in control, just as He has always been. The important thing for us to keep in mind are the signs (birth pains) that we should be looking for in order to recognize the coming of Christ.

The two olive trees and two lampstands are important symbols. In Zechariah 4:1-14, the two olive trees represent “the two anointed ones who stand by the Lord of the whole earth.” But who are these two witnesses? Some argue that they are Moses and Elijah because they had been the two standing next to Jesus in His transfiguration (Matthew 17:1-7). Some argue that they are two future prophets. I don’t care to get caught up in the details that could derail us from the main message. What is more important to know about these two witnesses is that they fulfill what is written (Deuteronomy 17:6; 19:15) that two witnesses are required for a valid testimony. (Also, contrast these two witnesses with the two beasts in 13:1,11 and it clearly depicts the Holy Trinity against an unholy trinity, which represents the bigger picture of Satan against GOD’s authority and His beloved creation. See “The Beast From The Earth” for details.) These two witnesses represent the entire prophetic tradition in the history of GOD’s people. In fact, it is written that these two will have the power to perform miracles and cause plagues — just as it had been in the days of Moses and Pharaoh. So what about the two lampstands? The two olive trees pour their [anointed] oil into the lampstands; the lampstands represent the churches. Thus, the witnesses and their valid testimonies shall empower the churches. Leon Morris once said that the churches are no more than lampstands. The Light is Christ, and they are to show Him forth (see Matthew 5:14-16; Mark 4:21-22; Luke 11:33-36).

It is written (11:7-10) that the two witnesses will finish their testimony and then the beast from the abyss will wage war against them and kill them. As it has been throughout history, GOD’s anointed usually receive persecution and sometimes get martyred (see Hebrews 11:32-40). So who is this beast? Though this beast will be revealed in chapter 13 (see “The Beast From The Sea” for details), we also know him from Daniel 7, 2Thessalonians 2:1-12, and 1John 2:18. This beast is commonly referred to as the antichrist. Once the two witnesses are killed, their bodies will remain out in the open for all to see in the same place where Jesus had been crucified. Their bodies will not be allowed to be put in a tomb and will remain there for three and a half days. The evil people will gloat over them and celebrate over them and even send gifts to one another. However, it is also written (11:11-14) that after the three and a half days, the two witnesses will be resurrected by the breath of GOD and will stand to their feet. A great fear will fall upon the people, the witnesses will ascend up into Heaven as everyone watches, and then a violent earthquake will cause a tenth of the city to fall and kill 7,000 people. A praiseworthy moment of repentance arrives in 11:3: “The survivors were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven.” So we know that some people will come into repentance; good does come out of the the bad. William Barclay said that the real victory is not to live in safety, to evade trouble, cautiously and prudently to preserve life; the real victory is to face the worst that evil can do, and if need be to be faithful unto death. This section ends with the second “woe” passing and with the third “woe” promised to come quickly.

Seventh Trumpet:
As written in 10:7, the time has come for GOD to begin His reign, to judge, and destroy those who destroy the earth (15:17-18) and for His hidden plan to be revealed. Though the seventh trumpet and the first bowl are separated by many sections of explanation, they are connected. The seven bowls come out of the seventh trumpet and 11:19 continues again at 15:5. The sections of explanation between the seventh trumpet and the first bowl are placed between them to help us understand what was going on behind the scenes and why they are related. (See 1Corinthians 15:52-58)

The Woman, the Child, and the Dragon:
A pregnant woman clothed with the sun, the moon under her feet, and with a crown of 12 stars on her head gives birth to a Son. The 12 stars represent the 12 tribes of Israel; in fact, the woman is Israel (see Genesis 37:9; Isaiah 13:6,8; Jeremiah 6:24). The Son, of course, is Jesus. Jesus came from the chosen people of Israel, as was always prophesied. A dragon (Satan) stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth in order to devour the child (see Matthew 2:13-20), but the child was protected and is going to shepherd all nations with an iron scepter (see Psalm 2:9). The woman fled into the wilderness. The Israelites fled from Pharaoh into the wilderness; Jesus overcame the Tempter in the wilderness. The wilderness is a place to seek GOD.

The Dragon Thrown Out Of Heaven:
Ephesians 6:11-12 explains that there is a spiritual battle raging all around us. War broke out in Heaven, Michael (see Daniel 12:1) fought Satan, and Satan and his angels were thrown out of Heaven down to Earth (see 20:1-3; Isaiah 14:12-15; Ezekiel 28:11-19; Luke 10:18; Proverbs 16:18). In 12:11, it is written that believers “conquered [Satan] by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they did not love their lives in the face of death.” We conquer evil by remaining faithful, obedient, and by enduring until the end (see Philippians 1:21).

The Fallen Dragon And The Woman:
When the dragon (Satan) saw that he had been thrown to earth, he persecuted the woman (Israel) who gave birth to the male child (Jesus). In other words, Satan persecuted GOD’s chosen people, the original branches. However, the woman was saved from the dragon. The dragon, furious with the woman, left to wage war against the rest of her offspring (see Romans 11:11-24). Know this: If Satan cannot get to you, he will go for the ones you love.

The Beast From The Sea:
To better understand the beast from the sea, read Daniel 7-12. The beast from the sea with the blasphemous names on his heads is referred to as the antichrist, the one whom Satan gives power (13:2; see also Matthew 4:8-9; Luke 4:5-7). This creature with all his characteristics represents his pseudo-power and pseudo-perfection. Also, see Isaiah 27:1. Since Satan had been defeated by Jesus’ sacrificial death, resurrection, and ascension, and the beast had been embarrassed by the resurrection and ascension of the two witnesses, some people believe that 13:3 refers to a false resurrection in order to entice people to worship him. We don’t know. What we do know is what is described immediately after: the whole earth was amazed and followed the beast (antichrist) and worshipped the dragon (Satan) because the dragon was the one who gave the beast authority. We also know that a mouth was given to the beast (13:5), he was permitted to wage war against the saints and conquer them (13:7), and was given authority over every tribe, people, language, and nation (13:7-8). This beast will captivate everyone — everyone whose name is not in the Book of Life! And this is why 13:10 tells us that this will demand perseverance and faith. In fact, along with the good news of Christ’s return and ultimate victory, the main theme found in the book of Revelation running parallel to the good news is that we must endure until the very end, remaining faithful and obedient. (See Matthew 10:28; 1Corinthians 9:24-27; Philippians 3:14-16; 1Timothy 6:11-16; 2Timothy 4:3-5; Hebrews 10:35-39; 2Peter 1:5-11; Revelation 3:16)

The Beast From The Earth:
As if having the beast from the sea (antichrist) isn’t bad enough, another beast comes up out of the earth with two horns like a lamb yet sounded like a dragon. This is the false prophet who will end up helping the antichrist. He looks or performs like Jesus (the lamb), yet his motives are evil like that of Satan (the dragon). The dragon plus the two beasts equals an unholy trinity alliance that unites as a mockery of the Holy Trinity to stand in opposition of GOD’s authority. It is written that this beast will exercise the authority of the first beast on his behalf in order to compel everyone to worship the first. So the false prophet will compel everyone to worship the antichrist (see 2Thessalonians 2:7-12). This second beast performs great signs and deceives people because of these signs. An image of the first beast (antichrist) will be made and anyone who does not worship the image is to be killed (see Daniel 3:17-18). And everyone will be given a mark on his right hand or forehead; no one will be able to buy or sell unless they have the mark. I want to linger on this ‘mark’ for a moment. Before sailing on to the next subject matter, I want to dock here for a brief moment in order to think this one through. This subject matter is important because we will be brought to the crossroad of Christ or compromise and when that day comes, you need to be ready and know when to say no (see Acts 5:29).

The Mark:
Many people have argued that the two beasts and this ‘mark’ refers only to the past. These people argue that the first beast represents the Roman imperial rule and the second beast represents the wealthy social elite of Asian Minor, its magistrates, city officials, and trade guilds, who not only held political office but were also priests in the imperial cult. The argument is that they erected imperial temples, set up “the image” of the emperor on statues and other icons, and sponsored extravagant festivals. Since the success of the festivals guaranteed political favors from Rome, those who refused to participate in the imperial cult could not buy/sell since they were ostracized by the trade guilds. While it is true that the Christians in the past had to decide whether to Christ or compromise, is it wise to believe that the two beasts and this ‘mark’ refers only to the past? If we assume that they refer only to the past, does that mean it won’t happen in the future? I believe it is wise to consider the possibility that someone in the future could persuade nations to follow him and that it could happen to us just as Nero and Hitler happened to people in the past (see 1Corinthians 10:11-13).

On the other side of this coin, many have argued that the two beasts and the ‘mark’ refers to a time in the future and that it will be a literal mark upon the hand or forehead. It is not unthinkable that Christians will be unable to buy/sell in the marketplace due to their allegiance to Christ. It is easy to see how a future society could ‘force’ a literal mark upon someone’s hand or forehead. After all, cash has been slowly becoming obsolete; debit/credit cards became the new normal and accepted way of buying/selling. And now we have chips in debit/credit cards that came to be only because they were marketed as being more convenient and safer to use. It’s not absurd to believe that our government could sell the idea of chips implanted within our hands or foreheads. Ponder on it: So long as the ‘mark’ is marketed as being for our benefit due to its convenience and safety, I believe people would accept it. Over time, we have accepted and integrated into our lives the allowance of facial recognition and even using our fingerprints as our passwords on our phones. It has literally gotten to the point where everything is becoming digital and all accounts are starting to merge into one. Can you imagine the ad campaign for the ‘mark’? I believe it would be something like this: “With it being implanted inside of you, you will never lose it! You will never again have to worry about losing coins, bills, or cards! There is no longer a need for a wallet to weigh you down! It is the ultimate convenience! And you also don’t have to worry about about identity theft! What is yours belongs to you and only you! With facial recognition and/or the use of your fingerprint for confirmation, making purchases or confirming your identity will now be simple, easy, and quick!”

To some people that scenario might sound like something a conspiracy theorist or science fiction writer might conjure up, but it truly is quite possible. If you examine how far we have allowed ourselves to push the line that separates right from wrong, a future scenario such as that is not unbelievable. The ‘mark’ wouldn’t be something forced upon those who resist until the majority accepted it. Much like everything has become nowadays. Once the majority accepts something, the government can enforce that something without much of a struggle.

However, let us focus on the reality of this topic instead of the theories that come from it. Remember: past, present, and future! There had been churches in the past who had been unable to participate in the imperial cult due to their convictions in Christ as the only Lord. However, we must also keep in mind that Christ has not yet returned and life most certainly will get worse before He returns. Rather than allowing this topic to divide us, let us focus on what is definitely true. The ‘mark’ is in opposition to the seal of GOD (7:3; 14:1) and is the demonic mockery of the shema and the use of phylacteries on the foreheads of the Jews (Deuteronomy 6:8). Essentially, Satan is pridefully boasting to GOD something like this: “You’ve got your weak and pathetic people who have your seal, but I’ve managed to steal the loyalty of much of Your beloved creation and they’ve got my mark. If You’re all-powerful, why did a third of Your angels and much of your beloved people follow me? I can reign and rule just as well as You can, if not better!”

666:
And this, of course, leads us to 13:18, which is the most famous and argued text of Revelation. John writes that this is going to require wisdom, but if you calculate the number of the beast — which is a number of a man — his number is 666. Many have attempted to calculate not just the number (666) but also the exact identity of the man to whom it refers. Since 1John 2:18 states that “many antichrists have come” (i.e., as foreshadowing the ultimate Antichrist figure), there may be some marginal usefulness in noting that names such as Nero and Hitler can be shown to have a numerological value of 666 by assigning a numerical value to each letter of the alphabet (research: gematria). However, it is wise to realize that such a numerological calculation will be clear only as the actual events unfold. I believe that John had Nero in mind, but I am also aware that GOD’s depth goes beyond current circumstances and extends to the future. Instead of placing our focus on an exact identity of the Antichrist, let us focus on the fact that 666 is the number of the beast, which refers to the first beast (antichrist). And we already know that the first beast was given power by the dragon, which is Satan. Therefore, the number 666 ultimately represents a person who is anti-Christ. And who is the person who is anti-Christ except the person who denies Jesus (1John 2:22; 4:3; 2John 1:7)? Ultimately, everyone who follows the ways of Satan and possess such arrogant pride will fall (Proverbs 16:18). This is just another way for GOD to say that He knows the people who have His seal and those who don’t. The number 666 can be seen as the code of rejection. The person who is anti-Christ will always lead people astray and into an evil way. The best advice we can take away from the mark of the beast and the number 666 is this: If someone’s terrific words don’t match the Truth of GOD’s Word, that person’s words are glamorous lies; if someone’s call-to-action would cause us to step outside the sanctuary of GOD’s absolute moral standard, that person is against us, not for us. Stay awake and alert (1Peter 5:8).

The Lamb and the 144,000:
In 14:1-5, the 144,000 are mentioned again and they are seen having the Father’s name written on their foreheads. It is written that they sing a “new song” (see 5:8-14 and Psalm 96) and no one could learn the song except the 144,000 who had been redeemed from the earth. Who are the redeemed from the earth? Everyone who places their faith in Christ (see Ephesians 1:7-10; Romans 9:11-28). In 14:4, it is written that the redeemed are the undefiled virgins. Okay, so who are the undefiled virgins? Literal virgins? No. To discover the meaning of the virgins, we must know the entire book of Hosea. The impure, the adulteress prostitutes are those who are unfaithful to GOD. At one time, the entire nation of Israel was compared to a prostitute — that’s what the book of Hosea is about! Even though Israel was unfaithful, GOD decided to love them anyway and create a way to make sure they can be together. That way was Jesus. The faithful are the pure just as the Church is the Bride of Christ, and the Bride is undefiled; therefore, the faithful are also undefiled. How? By acceptance of the gracious gift of salvation through Jesus. Our sins were like scarlet before Jesus made them white as snow. The sacrificial Lamb made pure the Bride (see 19:7-8). In 2Corinthians 11:2-3, we see that the defiled are those who are led astray. In 14:4-5, it is written that the virgins are the ones who follow the Lamb wherever He goes. They were redeemed as firstfruits. So who are the ones who follow Christ wherever He goes? All His faithful followers. Because Jesus is the Shepherd and we are His flock. But what about the firstfruits? The firstfruits is that which is harvested first. John would not have known the “new song” because he had not yet passed from the first death into Heaven. He only received the revelation in spirit. It’s a “new song” because we will only know it in Heaven. Those who are in Heaven are the redeemed and they would know the “new song.” For everyone who is already in Heaven is the redeemed and firstfruits (see Exodus 23:19; James 1:18) — they’ve already been gathered or harvested. In 5:8-14, the “new song” is sung by the 24 elders. Again, we must go back and remember who the 24 elders are. The 24 elders represent the 12 tribes of Israel and the 12 apostles; thus, the 24 elders represent every believer whether under the Law of Moses or the grace of Christ. In addition, 5:11 states that the number of the 24 elders singing were “countless thousands, plus thousands of thousands.” Also, 5:10 tells us that the kingdom has people from every tribe and language and people and nation, which is in alignment with who the 144,000 represent. This is just another way of stating that GOD’s people will be separated from those who deny and reject Christ. Only those who are sealed and found in Christ will ever know and learn the “new song.” In Psalm 96, “all the earth” is told to sing and it is written that the singing precedes the coming of Christ for Him to judge. Appropriately placed, this section in Revelation (14:1-5) comes prior to what is next, where angels provide one last opportunity to repent (14:6-13) before the Harvest begins (14:14-20).

Proclamation of Three Angels:
John then saw a total of three angels proclaiming messages, one at a time, each with a different message. The first angel proclaimed the Gospel to every nation, tribe, language, and people. In other words, everyone was told the truth. The second angel proclaimed that the great Babylon has fallen (see 18:1-8). In other words, everyone was told that the worldly ways have crumbled and there is nothing left to stand on except for Christ. The third angel proclaimed that anyone found with the mark of the beast will drink the wine of GOD’s wrath (see Isaiah 51:17; Jeremiah 25:15-29; Psalm 75). The three messages come together to form one last chance of repentance. It will not be said that GOD didn’t give people a chance to repent. The third angel concludes his message by stating the recurring theme that salvation demands perseverance of the saints. Endurance requires trust and obedience (see Proverbs 3:5-7). This section concludes by saying that everyone from that point on who dies in the Lord will be blessed, but for those who have hardened hearts there will be no rest (see Psalm 95:8-9; Hebrews 3:7-19).

Harvest Time:
In 14:14, it is written that Jesus returns on a white cloud. The cloud represents GOD’s presence and protection (see Exodus 13:21; 14:19-20; 24:15-18; Numbers 9:16); GOD led the way before His people and even stood between them and their enemies. In Acts 1:9-11, we were told that Jesus, who was taken up into Heaven, will return in the same way as He was seen going to Heaven. In 14:14-20, the time for Jesus to return and claim what rightfully belongs to Him has come. The time to reap has come because the harvest of the earth is ripe. The best way to understand the Harvest is to read what is written in Scripture regarding the event (Isaiah 24:13; Micah 7:1-7; Matthew 3:12; 10:32-33; 13:29-30,37-43,47-50; 24:31; 25:41-46; Luke 3:17).

The fire mentioned [in the Scriptures regarding the Harvest] calls to mind two things: First, it is a great reversal of all prior so-called kings who would throw GOD’s people in the fire for not bowing to them (see Daniel 3:6) — there is only one King and He is Jesus! Second, only what is pure can withstand the fire and the wicked will be utterly consumed in their impurity and wickedness and will therefore be in anguish because they will realize that they are not in alignment with GOD’s absolute moral standard; they are unclean (see Psalm 12:6; Proverbs 25:4; Isaiah 48:10; Jeremiah 6:29; Daniel 3:25-30; 12:10; Zechariah 13:9; Malachi 3:2-3; Matthew 5:8; 2Timothy 2:21). Again, those who are pure are the ones redeemed through the blood of Christ (Isaiah 1:18). From the Harvest, some people will know and experience eternal joy; some people will experience the winepress of GOD’s wrath (Isaiah 18:5-7; 63:3-6; Jeremiah 25:30; 51:33; Lamentations 1:15; Joel 3:12-13) and know eternal anguish. On the Day of Judgment, blood will flow in about 1,600 stadia (4 x 4 x 1,000 = 1,600; or, the area of a place squared multiplied by a great number equals a large area). If we are to take the 1,600 stadia literally, it will be about 184 miles. The area of blood would cover all of Palestine (from Tyre in the north to Egypt in the south) and immerse a person as high as his/her chest. The image of the Harvest calls us all into question: After the swing of the sickle, will you be found to be one of the fickle unfaithful? This recalls to mind the challenge of Joshua 24:15: Choose whom you will serve! The Lamb or the Liar? Lion of Judah or the Beast of Babylon?

Preparation For The Bowl Judgments:
This section brings us right back again to the seventh trumpet. Compare 11:19 to 15:5 and you will see that they are the same event. In addition, we can see that this is the seventh trumpet by comparing 10:7 to 15:4, which makes known that the revealing comes at the seventh trumpet. The blast of the seventh trumpet, the Harvest, and the first bowl all occur simultaneously. All of the bowls are a part of the Harvest process in which the “weeds” are gathered first (see Matthew 13:29-30). Chapter 15 opens up with everyone who shares in victory over the beast singing the song of GOD’s servant Moses and the song of the Lamb while standing on a sea of glass. Because the victorious person is standing on the sea of glass, that image calls to mind Peter in his victorious [yet brief] moment of standing on the sea of doubt and fear (see Matthew 14:22-32). Those who remain faithful stand on a sea of glass just like Peter stood on the sea when he remained in faith. The song of the Lamb is essentially multiple ways of singing praise (see Deuteronomy 32:4; Psalm 98:1-2; 111:2-9; Jeremiah 10:7; 16:19; Amos 4:13). And because those victorious people were singing the song of Moses (see Exodus 15:1-18), the sea of glass they were standing on also calls to mind how the wicked are below, drowned in the depths of the sea. The victorious are above the drowning depths of demonic deeds and therefore stand victoriously on the sea [of glass]. Just as the evil Egyptians had been swallowed, the evil wicked people of the earth are now about to be swallowed in GOD’s wrath. And Pharaoh/Egypt had been likened to Leviathan/Rahab (see Isaiah 30:7; 51:9-10) and Satan likened to the dragon. GOD will defeat the ancient serpent; in addition, the sea (often a symbol of cosmic evil) will be no more (21:1). Whereas the depths of the ocean can hide or conceal, the sea of glass is transparent because nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known (see Matthew 10:26; Luke 12:2). Whereas the trumpets produced partial judgment, people were indirectly affected, and they were still able to repent, the bowls will be complete judgment that directly attacks those who are no longer able to repent (see Amos 8:2). They made their choice and now they will have to live with it. Or as the old saying goes, they made their bed and now they will lie in it. And truthfully, each one of us have the same decision to make (see Deuteronomy 11:26-28; 30:15-20).

First Bowl:
I believe the seven bowls are all poured either simultaneously or one immediately after another. The first bowl affects land and severely painful sores break out against the wicked.

Second and Third Bowls:
If you recall, the martyrs of 6:10 asked, “how long until You judge and avenge our blood from those who live on the earth?” The second and third bowls affect water: the second bowl turns the sea into blood and all life in the sea dies, the third bowl turns the rivers and springs of water into blood, leaving only blood for the wicked to drink (see Exodus 7:17-21; Psalm 78:44). It is here in the third bowl we see GOD avenging the blood of all the righteous martyrs.

Fourth Bowl:
Now affecting the sun, people are burned with fire and intense heat. Remarkably, these people blaspheme the name of GOD and still do not repent. And truly, that is why they suffer — the wicked refuse to align themselves with the absolute moral standard. GOD doesn’t punish those whom have been sealed. And GOD never desired for these people to experience any of these horrible events. The only reason why they suffer through them is because they have decided not to be with or around GOD. Like in Jeremiah 14:16, evil gets poured out on the wicked who do evil. James 1:12-15 tells us why judgment takes place: sin leads to death.

Fifth Bowl:
Affecting the throne of the beast, his kingdom is plunged into darkness and people gnaw their tongues because of their pain. This seems to be more of a spiritual affliction of darkness much like Saul felt when GOD’s Spirit left him (see 1Samuel 16:14). Without GOD’s Spirit (the Source of life), all that remains is torment and a desire for death (see Isaiah 24:11). Both the darkness and the gnawing of the tongues calls to mind the image of those apart from GOD with weeping and gnashing teeth (see Matthew 8:12; 13:42,50; 22:13; 24:51; 25:30). And just like Pharaoh who kept a hardened heart, these wicked people remain with hardened hearts as well; they refuse to repent. The wicked refuse to acknowledge GOD due to the pain they feel which they themselves cause (see Proverbs 19:3). Why are they the cause and not GOD? Simply put, sin cannot be with that which is Holy; darkness cannot exist in the Light (see Genesis 1:4; Leviticus 10:10; Ezekiel 44:23; Matthew 6:24; 1Corinthians 10:21; 2Corinthians 6:14-16). The wicked refuse to accept the love and gracious gift of salvation which turns scarlet into white (Isaiah 1:18). Without accepting Christ, there is no refuge. Without Jesus, there is no way into Light (see Isaiah 42:6; 50:10; John 8:12); all that remains is darkness, gnawing of tongues, and gnashing of teeth (see John 14:6).

Sixth Bowl:
Affecting the great Euphrates River, its water dries up, making a way for an easy invasion from the east. In Jeremiah 51:59-64, Jeremiah wrote a scroll regarding all the disaster that would come to Babylon. After having the scroll read, he had it thrown into the middle of the Euphrates River, stating, “In the same way, Babylon will sink and never rise again because of the disaster I am bringing on her.” Of course, that referred to the actual Babylon and the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC, but all the evidence seems to point to it being a double-entendre. Interestingly, those were the last words of Jeremiah and the next chapter (chapter 52) is the last chapter of the book of Jeremiah, which describes the fall of Jerusalem. Because Babylon destroyed Jerusalem and Babylon the Great (see “The Notorious Prostitute” for details) is destroyed before the New Jerusalem (see “The New Jerusalem” for details), the evidence seems to support a deeper meaning behind Jeremiah’s prophetic words. Keep in mind that the words Jeremiah shared came from GOD who knows the future. The sixth bowl dries up the Euphrates River, where Jeremiah’s words had been hidden. The drying of the river water is the unveiling of Jeremiah’s words that would allow them to be seen again. That is important because Jeremiah’s words return, activating yet again the promise that Babylon will sink and never rise again. Babylon is going down! But this time it’s a different Babylon. (This will all make more sense after reading the two sections previously mentioned.)

After the drying up of the Euphrates River, the sixth bowl reveals unclean spirits coming out from the mouths of the unholy trinity: the dragon (Satan), beast (antichrist), and false prophet (beast from the earth). It is written in 16:14,16 that these are spirits of demons performing signs, who travel to the kings of the whole world to assemble them for the battle of the great day of GOD, assembling them at the place called Armageddon (see 14:14-20; 19:17-21). Armageddon is traditionally known to be the hill of Megiddo, a great city that guarded the pass between the coast and the valley of Jezreel or Esdraelon (see Judges 5:19; 2Kings 9:27; 23:29), about 60 miles north of Jerusalem. In ancient times, the Megiddo valley was the site of many crucial battles that determined who possessed control of valuable trade routes connecting Egypt with Mesopotamia. Today, it is an expansive flat area which is home to rich farmland, livestock, and agriculture. In a great reversal, Jesus will use this location to prove His authority over all and showcase His power — He is the One who possesses control and there is no other king who can take His authority away! The spirits coming out of the mouths of the unholy trinity is Satan’s attempt to create his own environment using his words just as GOD created with His Word (see Genesis 1). GOD’s Word created; Satan endeavors to undo GOD’s “very good” work by his own words in order to show GOD that creation is not good as He said it was (see Genesis 1:31), which would prove GOD wrong. And this is the reason behind the entire final battle and Satan’s fall and eternal banishment: pride. The final battle will be a showdown to determine who is right, who is wiser, and who should possess all power and control. In the midst of this description is the third blessing statement of the book of Revelation, which keeps with the recurring theme of perseverance and endurance. It is written in 16:15 that the one who is alert and remains clothed is blessed. What is this clothing? I believe it to be none other than the full armor of GOD that we should be wearing at all times (see Ephesians 6:10-20), but also the “white clothes” of the victor (see 3:4-5,18), for once we graduate from this life to the next, we will no longer need the armor and can put on the white clothes of comfort. Until Christ comes, we must be clothed and ready (see Luke 12:35-40). This warning to be alert is also seen in 1Peter 5:8, but especially in 1Thessalonians 5:1-6. Only those who are ready will make it (see Matthew 25:1-13) into the Kingdom of GOD.

Seventh Bowl:
The seals, trumpets, and bowls all conclude with final judgment in each set. The seventh [and final] bowl is poured into the air and a voice says, “It is done!” (see John 19:30; compare Revelation 16:17 with 21:6) As seen before (8:5; 11:19), the flashes of lightning, rumblings of thunder, and severe earthquake occur and signify a transitional change, but this time “it is done.” The seven bowls conclude with an earthquake so great that the ‘great city’ (see 17:18) splits into three parts (see Isaiah 24:19), islands moved, mountains disappeared, and enormous hailstones weighing 100 pounds fell from the sky onto people. What the conclusion means is as follows…

The Notorious Prostitute:
Then one of the seven angels showed John the judgment of the “notorious prostitute who sits on many waters.” The many waters are peoples, multitudes, nations, and languages (17:15). When the angel said that the kings of the earth committed sexual immorality with her, he meant that the powerful leaders and people of prominent positions all sleep with Satan under the covers with this sinful slut. (Contrast this notorious prostitute with the woman of 12:1-6 and also the pure Bride of Christ of 19:7-8.) The Notorious Prostitute is pictured as a woman sitting on a scarlet (saturated in sin) beast that was covered in blasphemous names (antichrist; see 13:1). The woman was dressed in purple (pseudo-royalty) and scarlet (sin), adorned with gold, precious stones, and pearls (representing status and importance). Despite her facade, in her gold cup was filled with everything vile, which represents her true nature. On her forehead a name was written: Babylon the Great; the mother of prostitutes and the vile things of the earth. The woman was drunk on the blood of the saints and on the blood of the witnesses to Jesus.

The Notorious Prostitute is Babylon the Great and also the “great city that has an empire over the kings of the earth,” which splits into three parts in the seventh bowl (see 16:19; 17:18). Basically, we can call her Sin City (not a reference to Las Vegas, but that sinful city too will one day fall). ‘Babylon’ has essentially the same relationship with the earth inhabitants as ‘Jezebel’ did with the sinners in the church at Thyatira (see 2:20), who was named after the real Jezebel who was evil and against GOD’s people (see 1Kings 21:23-25). Babylon also has a close relationship with the beast. Undoubtedly, the Babylon of John’s time was Rome; however, Rome was merely the most recent archetype of humanity’s rebellion against GOD (see 1Peter 5:13). Jezebel was a codename taken from the name of a real person just as Babylon is a code name taken from the name of a real place. Some people have argued that Babylon was a code name only for Rome in John’s time, but I believe that to be nearsighted. There does exist a Babylon the Great that will fall; if not, Jesus cannot return and announce that it has fallen (see 18:2). And if Babylon only meant Rome, it would be a little strange for Jesus to return about 2,000 years later in order to announce Rome’s fall. Moreover, the fall of Babylon the Great occurs after cataclysmic events such as the sea, rivers, and springs turning to blood (16:3-6), intense heat burning people with fire (16:8-9), the Euphrates River drying up (16:12), islands and mountains moving, and 100-pound hailstones falling from the sky (16:20-21). Because none of this has yet happened, I am certain that Rome was only a Babylon, but not the Babylon the Great. Because Babylon the Great is the mother of prostitutes (implying that all prostitutes come from her) and the mother of the vile things of the earth (implying the root of sin), I believe that Babylon the Great is none other than Satan’s domain of darkness, which has an empire over the ‘kings’ of the earth (see 18:2). Babylon the Great represents that which is demonic and evil; it represents humanity’s pride and opposition to GOD. While Babylon could include an actual city in the last times, it is more likely the lament in chapter 18 is modeled after Jeremiah 51, which speaks of the wider Babylonian Empire, represented by the city of Babylon.

In what should be an anticipated outcome, both the “10 kings” awaiting their day of power and the beast turn on the notorious prostitute, making her desolate and naked, devouring her flesh, and burning her up with fire (17:16). This is the image of evil and how Satan operates. Sin’s insatiable appetite devours even its own; evil causes its own destruction. There is no loyalty on Satan’s side. Can you picture it? The notorious prostitute sits on all the people (acting as their covering) while they whore around and she even rides on the beast (antichrist). The beast allows Babylon to be on its back until the beast desires to go elsewhere and then he will throw the great city Babylon off his back without care or concern for her or the people she covered. Like a decorator crab that will use almost anything to disguise itself, Satan’s counterfeit and camouflage ways operate in the same manner. And once Satan tires of his attire, he will shed it off like the serpent he is and decorate himself with something new. Empires rise; empires fall. There has always been a new empire to take the place of the old one, but those days will end. Think about it: if the beast destroys the prostitute (Babylon), evil would be casting out evil, which means it would be a house divided against itself and would therefore not be able to stand (see Mark 3:23-26; Luke 11:17-18). But that has always been GOD’s plan (see Isaiah 25:1). GOD is the GOD of the Great Reversal, using the devil’s own deeds to boomerang them back on him. Satan simply cannot stand (see 6:17) and his empire will come to an end (see Daniel 8:25).

The Fall of Babylon the Great:
Think about this: The notorious prostitute is Babylon the Great (17:5), which is the ‘great city’ (17:18). The ‘great city’ splits into three parts (16:19). I believe this represents what Jesus said regarding a divided house that will not stand (Mark 3:26). The dragon and the two beasts had formed an unholy trinity alliance, but now the ‘great city’ splits into three parts, showing that the unholy trinity — which mocks the Trinity and righteous fellowship/teamwork (see Ecclesiastes 4:12) — cannot overpower GOD and inevitably collapses in on itself. Why would the unholy trinity be unstable and collapse in on itself? A foundation not built on The Rock is unstable and will collapse (Matthew 7:24-27). In 18:2, an angel announces that Babylon the Great has fallen (see 14:8 and Isaiah 21:9). An important description of this ‘great city’ follows, stating she is the dwelling for demons, a place for everything unclean, and that all nations have drunk the wine of her sexual immorality. Certainly, this ‘great city’ is Satan’s domain where demons dwell in dedication to the darkest deeds. In the Old Testament, the city was often a false course of security for those who left the presence of GOD. In fact, after Cain murdered his brother, Abel, he formed his own city (Genesis 4:16-17) and it became a cesspool for sin. Cain’s Sin City eventually falls because it should never have been built — it had been built on a godless foundation. The ‘great city’ will fall because its inhabitants were deceived and believed that the best foundation to build on was sinful sand and not the saving Rock of the Cornerstone. And then a voice from Heaven says, “Come out of her, My people, so that you will not share in her sins or receive any of her plagues.” (See Jeremiah 51:45) The only way out of the ‘great city,’ the domain of darkness, is through Christ into Heaven. The only way out is through the Harvest when the weeds will be separated. But we can all make personal decisions on a daily basis to exit out of sin, align ourselves with GOD’s will, and live righteously (see 1Corinthians 10:13).

The World Mourns Babylon’s Fall:
All people who committed sexual immorality and lived luxuriously with Babylon the Great are the ones who indulged in a sinful lifestyle, who built on the wrong foundation; they will weep and mourn when they see the smoke of her burning. The merchants of the earth will also weep and mourn (see Isaiah 24:2) because no one buys their merchandise any longer — and that merchandise includes slaves and human lives. Evil will no longer win! Satan the salesman is no longer Kingpin; those who sell sin find themselves in tailspin. In 18:20, we are told to rejoice because GOD executed judgment!

The Finality of Babylon’s Fall:
In 18:21, a mighty angel picked up a stone like a large millstone and threw it into the sea, saying, “In this way, Babylon the great city will be thrown down violently and never be found again.” (See Jeremiah 51:63-64 and Isaiah 24:20) Once again, the same sign stands for the destruction of Babylon, except this time it’s a little different. In Jeremiah 51, Jeremiah had his scroll thrown into the Euphrates River. Here, an angel throws a large stone like a millstone (see Matthew 18:6) instead of a scroll. Also, the angel threw the stone into the sea (which should still be blood; see 16:3). The stone is to represent the finality of the judgment and it being thrown into the sea (blood) suggests that Babylon the Great will drown in the blood. In 18:22, it is written that no music shall ever be heard from Babylon again (see Isaiah 24:8-9). Never again will the sound of celebration come from Babylon. No work will be heard — evil works are no more! In 18:23, light will never shine there — only darkness! People will never get married there — marriage will be restored to its original design, but in the form of one bride (all believers; the church) and one groom (Jesus). Cain had sinned, murdered his brother, built his own city on a godless foundation, called the city Enoch after his son, and then Lamech eventually came from Enoch and defiled and destroyed the design of marriage by taking a second wife (Genesis 4:18-19). For this reason and many others, GOD is going to restore marriage (see 19:7-8). All of this will happen because all the nations were deceived by this Babylon and all the blood of prophets and saints, and of all those slaughtered on earth — all that blood was found in Babylon! Who else could be responsible for all people? Who else could have deceived all the nations? The same sinful serpent who caused the separation in the first place (see Genesis 3:13)! That serpent has a name and his name is Satan.

Celebration In Heaven:
If all of Heaven celebrates due to one single sinner who comes into repentance (see Luke 15:7), then Heaven has a reason to celebrate! A vast multitude shout, “hallelujah,” which means, “praise the Lord!” Judgment has come. GOD has avenged the blood of all faithful believers. Babylon has fallen and the Harvest has arrived. This is an important message to all Christians — especially those suffering for their faith. No matter how much Rome or any other power wants to stop the church’s witness, a church that sings out resistance to evil and absolute faith in Christ cannot be defeated! The faithful who can praise Him in the storm are the same ones who can dance in the rain (see Matthew 8:23-27; Acts 16:25-34; Romans 8:28). Keep this in proper perspective: While everything looks like a bloody war zone on Earth, Heaven is celebrating at this time because they know all the good that is happening and is about to happen. Our joy should be unstoppable and we should be unbreakable because we know there will be a Day when Jesus will return as the Bridegroom to claim His bride (the entire church; all believers). (See Isaiah 61:10)

Marriage of the Lamb:
The marriage of the Lamb has finally come and the Bride of Christ (see Ephesians 5:22-32) is given fine linen to wear, bright and pure, which represents the righteous acts of the saints. The bright and pure clothes are the same as the white clothes found in Revelation (see 3:4-5; 7:13; 16:15; 22:14) because those are the clothes of the victors, those who have been sealed by GOD. Those invited to the marriage feast of the Lamb are fortunate! (See Matthew 8:11; 22:2-9; 25:10; Luke 13:29; 14:15-17)

The Rider on a White Horse:
Heaven opens and Jesus appears on a white horse. Again, much like the white clothes the victors wear and the white stone the victors receive, this white horse represents the pureness of Jesus, and the many crowns on his head represent His holiness and authority. This is the great reversal of when Jesus humbled Himself as a suffering and sacrificial servant on a donkey (see Zechariah 9:9; Matthew 21:4-5; John 12:14-15). Now Jesus returns as the expected powerful Messiah King that the Jews had always expected. Yet He wears a robe stained with blood (see 5:6,12; Hebrews 9:20-28; 1Peter 1:19) before the battle even begins and His name is the Word of GOD (see John 1:1,14,18). A sharp sword came from His mouth (see Isaiah 11:4; 49:2; Hebrews 4:12). He is the Shepherd (see John 10:11-16). He is the King of kings and the Lord of lords. Much detail is provided about this rider and His white horse so that the rider of the white horse in 6:2 will not be mistaken as Jesus. Though the rider of 6:2 seems to be a close comparison, a closer investigation reveals the counterfeit. But by now, we shouldn’t be surprised to know this because we should already realize how the decorator crab operates (2Corinthians 11:14).

The Beast And His Armies Defeated:
An angel commands the birds to come gather to eat the bodies of the defeated armies (see Matthew 24:28?; Luke 17:37?). The beast (antichrist) and false prophet are captured and thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur. The rest are killed with the sword that came from Jesus’ mouth (see 1:16; 2:16; 19:15; Matthew 26:52).

Satan Bound:
An angel comes down from Heaven with the key to the abyss and a great chain in his hand. He seizes the dragon (Satan) and binds him for 1,000 years (see 9:1-2; 20:1-3). Satan gets thrown into the abyss, it gets closed and sealed until the 1,000 years are completed. After that, he will be released only for a short time. First, let’s examine the angel who binds Satan. In 12:7-9, Michael fights Satan in Heaven and throws Satan down to earth. Who else would be powerful enough to bind Satan if not Michael through the power of GOD? I believe that the angel who binds Satan is Michael. And what about the 1,000 years? Truly, we don’t know. I have read multiple opinions on this matter, but nothing sticks out as being certain. Because most of the numbers in Revelation are symbolic, I believe that this means Satan is bound for an indefinite length of time. But when in the timeline would this occur? Just like no one knows the Hour of Jesus’ return, this is most likely one of the great mysteries that will be revealed later on, but I believe Satan was imprisoned at the beginning of the fifth trumpet (see “Putting The Pieces Together” for details). Isaiah 14:12-15 and Ezekiel 28:11-19 prophesied about Satan’s fall, and the only other two places where the fall is mentioned is in Luke 10:18 and Revelation 12:7-18. From Revelation 12, we know that Satan was thrown down to earth (12:9). We also know that after Satan was thrown down, he was able to roam about in order to wage war against people (12:12,17). In Luke 10:18, Jesus told us that He saw Satan fall (past tense). The context of Luke 10:18 (because of Luke 9:46-48) indicates that the disciples were in danger of allowing the power and authority Jesus [temporarily] gave to them go to their heads. Satan’s fall was due to pride and Jesus was steering His disciples away from the same mistake. Jesus’ response in that context was to tell His disciples to be humble and just be thankful they will make it into Heaven. Altogether, all we know is that Satan was thrown out of Heaven sometime after the fourth trumpet and was imprisoned at the fifth trumpet. We don’t know when Satan was/is released (see 20:7) and that’s perfectly acceptable because it doesn’t take away from the main message.

The Saints Reign With The Messiah:
Those who have been martyred are there; they came to life and reigned with the Messiah for 1,000 years. The rest of the dead did not come to life until the 1,000 years were completed. This is the first resurrection. It seems that everyone up until the point of Satan being bound in the abyss reign with Jesus. Because it is written that the rest of the dead do not come to life until the 1,000 years are complete, it seems that the ‘1,000’ years is a time period without the full power of Satan (because he is imprisoned in the abyss). It is also written that those who share in the first resurrection are blessed and the second death (see 20:14-15) has no power over them. Because this section is connected with the section where Satan is bound and the section of Satan’s release, this section is uncertain. The understanding of this entire section is dependent upon what the “1,000 years” means.

Satanic Rebellion Consumed:
When the 1,000 years are completed, Satan will be released from his prison and will go out to deceive the nations and gather them for one last battle. (This entire section is best understood in light of Daniel 7 and Ezekiel 38-39.) The army’s number is like the sand of the sea and they surround the saints, the beloved city. So we know from this that when all the armies surround Jerusalem, fire comes down from Heaven and consumes them. Then Satan is thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur, to remain there forever. Why is Satan bound and imprisoned in the abyss only to be released again? We don’t know. To ask that question would be like asking why humans had to live through the painful process of suffering in the temporary old Earth in order to experience, enjoy, and appreciate the eternal joy within the everlasting new Earth. Sometimes, we must accept the truth found in Isaiah 55:8-9: “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

Great White Throne, Book of Life, Judgment:
There is a great white throne and Jesus is seated on it. All the dead stand in trial and books were opened. Another book was then opened — the book of life! The dead are judged according to their works by what was written in the books. Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire (death will no longer exist). Anyone not found in the book of life will be thrown into the lake of fire. (See 3:5; 13:8; 17:8; 21:27; John 5:19-30)

New Heaven And New Earth:
John then saw a new Heaven and a new Earth, but the sea no longer existed. The first Heaven and Earth had passed away (see Isaiah 65:17; 66:22). Then John saw the new Jerusalem, prepared like a bride. (see Ezekiel 37:21-28) GOD’s dwelling is with humanity and He will live with them. GOD will wipe away every tear from their eyes (see 7:17; Isaiah 25:8) because these things no longer exist: death, grief, crying, nor pain. The previous things have passed away. GOD makes everything new! This new Heaven and new Earth is the final promise to the victor. There will be a new Eden to replace the old (see Genesis 2; Ezekiel 47). And there will be a new Jerusalem (see Isaiah 2; Zephaniah 3).

New Jerusalem:
In 21:9-27, we see the Bride, the wife of the Lamb. There are 12 gates and the names of the 12 tribes of Israel’s sons are inscribed on the gates. This represents the fact that the 12 tribes of the Old Testament is the starting point. Before we can even enter the city, we must acknowledge that the Old Testament must first be encountered, entered into, and experienced. The city wall has 12 foundations and the 12 names of the Lamb’s 12 apostles are on the foundations. This represents the fact that the 12 disciples laid down the ground work and because of them and every faithful person who came after them, we can be secure in the knowledge of our faith just like a wall provides security for a city. In addition, we know that we will be surrounded by other believers just like the wall surrounds the city. Of course, we know that Jesus is the Cornerstone, the foundation of everything (see Isaiah 28:16; Deuteronomy 32:4; 2Samuel 22:2-3; Psalm 118:22; 1Corinthians 10:4; Ephesians 2:20; 1Peter 2:6-7). The measurement of the city is 12,000 stadia (12 x 1,000 = 12,000). The measurement of its wall is 144 cubits (12 x 12 = 144). This represents the perfect size for a whole host of GOD’s people. The foundations of the city wall are adorned with 12 precious stones, which represents the 12 tribes of Israel (see Exodus 28:15-21). The broad street of the city was like transparent glass, which represents the pureness and holiness that is to be found there. There is no sanctuary because GOD is the sanctuary. The city does not need the sun nor the moon because GOD illuminates His light (see Isaiah 24:23; John 8:12). The gates will never close, which represents the everlasting peace that will be found there. Everything is good because GOD is good and only the good will be allowed in (see Leviticus 11:45; 19:2; 20:7,26). This is the restoration of what GOD had originally intended; thus, GOD completes His great reversal of Genesis 1:26-27 and everyone is truly in His image and will dwell with Him as He intended from the beginning.

The Source of Life:
There is a river of living water that flows from the throne of GOD down the middle of the broad street and the tree of life is on both sides of the river, bearing 12 kinds of fruit. There are 12 because it’s sustenance for all of GOD’s people. The leaves of the tree are for healing the nations and there will no longer be any curse (see Ezekiel 47:12). This is the great reversal and restoration of the garden of Eden (see Genesis 2:8-14; 3:22-24; Zechariah 14:11). We will see His face [clearly] and His name will be on our foreheads (see 1Corinthians 13:12). We will reign forever (see Daniel 7:18).

The Time Is Near:
Then an angel told John that GOD has sent His angel to show everyone what must “quickly” take place. How could this message be for 1st century AD believers and only those believers if Christ was to come quickly thereafter? Because Christ has not yet returned and it has been around 1,922 years since Revelation was written. That’s because Revelation concerns the past, present, and future. John was instructed not to seal the prophetic words because “the time is near.” How could it be near at the time when John saw and heard the mysteries of GOD? The answer is found in 2Peter 3:8-9 and Isaiah 55:8-9. It’s all in GOD’s perfect timing, but GOD’s timing is not as we know timing to be. And so John (and all of us) is told that those who wash their robes are blessed (see 7:14); the blessed are the ones who come in through Christ. Those not allowed in, who will be kept outside are the darkness dwellers, the evil-doers (compare 11:2 to 22:15). The book of Revelation ends with an invitation for anyone to “come” (compare 3:20 to 22:17), but also a serious warning that if anyone adds to the words of this book, GOD will add to him/her the plagues that are written in the book and if anyone takes away from the words of this book, GOD will take away his/her share of the tree of life and the Holy City (see Deuteronomy 4:1-2). And yet again, the book concludes with another promise that He is coming quickly. But how soon? We don’t know.

Putting The Pieces Together:
I do not believe that all of Revelation is in chronological order; some things need to be pieced together. And that doesn’t seem to be out of character for GOD to do; after all, His prophecies were centuries in advance for people to understand later and even Jesus spoke in parables (see Matthew 13:10-16; Isaiah 6:9-10) with the purpose of eluding the ‘children of Satan’ (see John 8:39-47). Just like 13:18 calls us to seek wisdom to discern the meaning behind ‘666,’ the entire book of Revelation demands wisdom in order to be understood. Revelation can be understood by the children of GOD with the help of the Holy Spirit to interpret. Because wisdom comes from GOD (see Proverbs 2; Jeremiah 33:3; Daniel 2:20-22; Amos 3:7; Matthew 13:11; John 8:31-32; Colossians 2:2), we can ascertain the main message of this book.

In 19:11, Heaven opens and there is a Rider (Jesus) on a white horse. Heaven opening is important for determining the Revelation timeline. If we examine Isaiah 24:18-19, we see that Heaven opens and there is a great earthquake that splits the earth. If we examine 16:17-19, we see that during the seventh and final bowl, there is a great earthquake, the ‘great city’ splits into three, islands flee, mountains disappear, 100-pound hailstones are riddling the earth, and Jesus announces, “It is done!” If we examine 2Peter 3:10-13, we see that the coming of Christ brings about the destruction of the old Earth. If we examine 21:1-2, we see that there is a new Heaven and a new Earth. In 21:6, we see Jesus announcing, “It is done!” So it seems that the seventh bowl and the ‘great city’ splitting is the old Earth being destroyed as the Harvest (14:14-20) happens and everyone is being separated and finding themselves at their trial for judgment (1Thessalonians 4:17). The ‘great city’ is Babylon (17:5,18); Babylon is Satan’s domain; Earth was where Satan was thrown to, becoming his domain (12:17); Earth is the prostitute who acts as a covering for its inhabitants; Babylon is Earth because it is saturated in sin; hence, the rapture/Harvest and then a new Heaven and new Earth. It also makes sense that Babylon the Great is Earth because the beast and the kings turn on her. Earth’s destruction is because of the antichrists and all the ‘kings’ who have the mark of Satan. Because the only way to make things right is to start anew in the new Heaven and Earth, which is ready for GOD’s people. It makes sense that chapter 17 is giving us insight to Babylon the Great that is seen as already fallen in chapter 18 and that’s why Heaven celebrates in 19:1-5. And then 19:6-10 provides an introduction to Jesus who arrives in 19:11-16, who comes to defeat the beast and his army in 19:17-21. And the conquering of the beast and his armies happens before the seventh and final bowl. If we examine 16:14-16, we see that the armies have assembled and are ready for war, but then 16:17 states that “it is done” and Babylon has fallen; therefore, a lot happens between 16:16 and 16:17. In 16:19, it states that Babylon the Great was remembered, as if the descriptions are what happened (past tense) and how it came to be that it was done. The lightning, thunder, and earthquake together form the sign that indicates transition. The only transition left after Christ conquering the beast and his armies is our final judgment, which we see in 20:11-15. And after the final judgment, GOD’s people experience the new Heaven and new Earth, as is seen in chapter 21. And 22:1-5 seems to be an explanation about that new Heaven and Earth. And then John’s vision concludes in 22:6-21. However, 22:6-9 seems to be the same exact scene from 19:9 when John was in Heaven. This is most likely why both concern the new Heaven and new Earth. It is unlikely that John would have mistakenly worshipped the same angel twice. The only information that is uncertain as to how it fits in the timeline of events is the release of Satan and the ‘1,000’ years that is mentioned. Has Satan already been released? Is he currently gathering everyone for a final war? Will he be released at some point in the future? However, knowing the time of Satan’s release is not necessary for comprehending the main message of Revelation.

Summary and Conclusion:
The book of Revelation is the story of the great reversal and restoration of the Creator’s original good design. Revelation brings us back to Genesis. It is a message of hope filled with warnings. To have faith in the slaughtered Lamb is to share victory with the Lion of Judah; the victor only conquers under the covering of Christ. The conquering is completed by Christ and His angelic clean-up crew (see Deuteronomy 32:35-36; Romans 12:19). Though persecution may be imminent to believers, our greatest danger is actually complacency and compromise with the evil world system. The central message is GOD’s sovereignty over human history. Cataclysmic disaster is predicted for the world, yet through it all GOD is in control. GOD will deliver His people and create a new Heaven and a new Earth where His people will dwell with Him for all eternity. GOD is doing all the work; all He asks of us is three things: be faithful, be obedient (obedience produces fruit), and endure until the end (see Matthew 24:13; Revelation 13:10). The message of the book is clear and can be summed up in two words: “GOD wins” or “Love wins” — they are the same. Everything will eventually be unveiled; therefore, stay faithful, do not be afraid, and remember that you are loved (see Matthew 10:26-33). Revelation is the conclusion of the Bible, which is a long love letter. The ending reads something like this: “I love you and one day, we will be together again.” And for that reason, we need to live as if Jesus died yesterday, rose this morning, and is coming back tomorrow.
